NBA – TRENDS OF THE DAY

There are five games in the Association this Friday, February 1, 2019, and we’ll see a few interesting matchups including the Houston Rockets at the Denver Nuggets. Elsewhere, the Memphis Grizzlies visit the Charlotte Hornets while the Utah Jazz hosts the Atlanta Hawks, so here are all need-to-know betting trends and notes that will help you make the best wagers.

Featured game: Houston Rockets vs. Denver Nuggets

The Houston Rockets will meet the Denver Nuggets for the third time this season, leading the head-to-head series with a couple of comfortable victories over the Nuggets. Interestingly, the Rockets are 9-0 straight up and 7-2 ATS in their last nine meetings with the Nuggets, and are 4-0 straight up and ATS in the previous four H2H duels at Pepsi Center. The Nuggets opened as 4.5-point favorites on this one with the total at 227.0 points and the Rockets at +160 money line odds.

The Rockets (29-21; 23-26-1 ATS) are coming off a disappointing 121-116 home loss to the New Orleans Pelicans that put an end to their three-game winning streak. They are 5-3 straight up and 2-6 ATS in the last eight games overall, and are 3-4 straight up and 2-5 ATS in their previous seven outings away from home. James Harden continues with his unreal performance, averaging 45.4 points over his last ten apps. The Rockets will miss Clint Capela due to a thumb injury, and the big man was tallying 27.5 points on average in two meetings with the Nuggets this season.

The Nuggets (35-15; 27-23 ATS) are on a four-game winning streak following a 105-99 victory at New Orleans this past Wednesday, keeping the pace with the Warriors on the top of the Western Conference, while they are six games ahead of the Rockets at No. 5 seed. Denver is 7-3 straight up and 4-6 ATS in its last ten games overall, while the Nuggets are 16-1 straight up and 13-4 ATS in their previous 17 contests at Pepsi Center. Isaiah Thomas (hip) still hasn’t played this term, while Jamal Murray is listed as questionable for the matchup with Houston.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Charlotte Hornets

The Memphis Grizzlies (20-32; 22-30 ATS) and the Charlotte Hornets (24-26; 25-25 ATS) will lock horns for the second time in just ten days, as the Hornets overcame the Grizzlies 118-107 as 2-point underdogs in Tennessee on January 23, 2019. The Hornets opened as 4.5-point favorites on this one with the total at 206.5 points and the Grizzlies at +165 money line odds. Charlotte has beaten Memphis four times in a row and is 6-1 straight up and ATS in its last seven meetings with the Grizzlies, while the Hornets are 3-2 straight up and ATS in the previous five head-to-head duels in North Carolina.

The Grizzlies have dropped two games in a row including a 99-97 overtime loss at Minnesota last Wednesday. They are terrible 1-10 straight up and 4-7 ATS in the last 11 games overall and are 0-8 straight up and 2-6 ATS in their previous eight games on the road. Also, the Grizzlies are 2-6 straight up and 3-5 ATS in their last eight road encounters with the Eastern Conference. On the other side, the Hornets are 5-3 straight up and ATS in their last eight games overall, and are 7-1 straight up and 5-3 ATS in their previous eight games on the home court, while the Hornets are just 3-5 straight up and ATS in their last eight home meetings with the Western Conference.

Memphis is currently the No. 14 seed in the West 8.5 games behind the 8th-placed Clippers, so it seems like this season is over the Grizzlies who will miss Garrett Temple (shoulder) and Omri Casspi (knee) tonight. The Hornets are No. 8 seed in the East at the moment 2.5 games ahead of the Washington Wizards and the Detroit Pistons, while the Hornets are still playing without Cody Zeller (hand).

Atlanta Hawks vs. Utah Jazz

The Atlanta Hawks (16-34; 22-28 ATS) continue their journey with the clash against the Utah Jazz (29-23; 25-25-2 ATS), as these two foes will meet each other for the first time this season. The Hawks won both head-to-head duels last season including a 99-94 victory in Salt Lake City where they were listed as huge 14-point underdogs. The Hawks are 7-3 straight up and 5-5 ATS in their last ten meetings with the Jazz, and are 7-1 straight up and 6-2 ATS in the last eight H2H duels in Salt Lake City. However, the Jazz opened as an 11.5-point fave on this one with the total at 227.0 points and the Hawks at +550 money line odds.

The Hawks are coming off a heavy 135-113 defeat at Sacramento this past Wednesday, while they are 2-4 straight up and ATS in the last six games overall. The Hawks are 3-2 straight up and ATS in their last five games on the road, and are 2-5 straight up and 3-4 ATS in their previous seven road meetings with the Western Conference. Also, the Hawks are 1-6 straight up and 3-4 ATS in their previous seven road contests when listed as double-digit underdogs. Atlanta is currently the No. 12 seed in the East eight games behind the 8th-placed Charlotte Hornets.

On the other side, the Jazz is coming off an ugly 132-105 defeat at Portland last Wednesday to end up its three-game winning streak and is 9-2 straight up and 5-5-1 ATS in the last 11 games overall. Utah is 8-1 straight up and 4-4-1 ATS in its last nine games on the home court, and is 5-0 straight up and 2-2-1 ATS in the previous five home meetings with the Eastern Conference, while the Jazz is 6-1 straight up and just 1-5-1 ATS in its last seven contests when listed as a double-digit fave. Utah is currently the No. 7 seed in the West 2.5 games ahead of the 9th-placed Lakers and will miss Dante Exum (ankle) and Raul Neto (groin) tonight.

Allen Moody

A bit of a strange day in the NBA, where first half lines haven’t been posted on four of the five games, so we’ll jump over here first, where we have a decent game to end the night, and a fair game with the Thunder at Miami, but that’s about the best that can be said for the schedule.

Memphis at Charlotte: The Hornets opened -4 and the line is now up to 6 after Charlotte has received more than 70% of the early wagers in this one. I have Charlotte winning by nine, but not real thrilled with being on the same side as the public in this one, against a Memphis team that can pop up with a big effort when you least expect it.

Boston at New York: The Celtics opened -13 and the line is still holding steady with Boston getting more than three-quarters of the early wagers in this one. The Knicks are in a bit of turmoil right now and this is probably a game just to stay away from due to all of the player moves New York made on Thursday and it’s difficult to say who will be with them and who will not, as they’re all officially listed as questionable.

Oklahoma City at Miami: This could be a decent game if the Heat show up, something that doesn’t always happen and the Thunder have moved to -5 after opening -4 and getting 88% of the early wagers. I have Oklahoma City winning by seven, although another set of numbers has them winning by just two and this is one I’ll just stay away from.

Atlanta at Utah: The Jazz opened -12 here and the line is now Utah -11.5 even though the Jazz have gotten close to three-quarters of the early wagers. The Jazz do have the Rockets tomorrow in a classic lookahead situation and even though I have the Jazz covering the spread, winning by 13, this is another game I have no interest in getting involved with.

Houston at Denver: The Nuggets opened -4.5 and the line is holding steady with Denver getting 45% of the wagers, which is a little bit higher than it was earlier when the Rockets were getting 60% of the wagers. I have Denver winning this one by double-digits and will go ahead and take the Nuggets in this spot, as they look to avenge a pair of earlier season losses to Houston.
