Friday's NBA Preview
By Josh Jacobs

If you haven’t acclimated to the switch from Wednesday to Friday’s ESPN double-header fear not. That’s what we’re here for.

Just to take a quick snap shot of what’s been unfolding in the NBA over the last few days, favorites hold a close edge, going 11-6 since Wednesday. But maybe more important was the shift in which way total plays moved. Monday witnessed a near perfect 6-1 on the ‘under’ while Tuesday had the ‘over’ hitting the board hard with a 4-1 record. Overall, the ‘under’ is now 14-9 for the week.

What’s in store on Friday when 11 games crowd the card?

Boston at Detroit on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. EST

The tale of two different teams will have Boston (38-9 straight up, 27-20 against the spread) attempting to take its 10th win in a row while Detroit (25-19 SU, 19-25 ATS) would love to keep things respectable on the hardwood.

It’s not luck of the Irish for the Celtics. This is a club who’s rebounded nicely from a 2-7 slide which began in L.A. (losing 92-83 against the Lakers) at the end of December. Since then, Boston has staged an amazing performance on both sides of the court. The offense has outscored the opposition 107.4 PPG to 90.9 PPG. But more importantly to bettors is that the Celtics have covered eight of the last nine, even as books have handed out spreads as high as 10 points in back-to-back games (10 point favorites against Toronto and New Jersey). It was on Wednesday that the Celts answered the call once again, covering the 17-point spread in a 119-100 blowout over Sacramento.

Just be wary of betting Boston on the road. While the beast of the East is 4-1 ATS in the last five road games, a 5-6 ATS stint in the last 11 road trips hasn’t been financially viable. Then again, these figures include the 2-7 slip and slide.

The Pistons are 3-7 SU and ATS in their last 10 in large part to scoring 89.4 PPG, registering under 90 points in five of those contests. Overall this season, Detroit is 6-11 when the offense has failed to produce 90 points or more. Coming off a 98-89 win in Minnesota on Wednesday, the Pistons will get one day of rest before Friday’s tip-off. The problem here is that the team is a money pit at 11-14 ATS when coming off the one day of inactivity.

Boston has been dominant in head-to-head action. In the last eight meetings in Detroit, the Celtics are a convincing 7-1 ATS while an 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS record in the last 10 clashes continues to be a backer’s best friend.

Since guard Richard 'Rip' Hamilton has returned to the lineup after recovering from a groin injury, the Pistons have gone 3-5 SU and ATS. Hamilton himself has averaged 14.7 PPG.

Golden State at New Orleans on ESPN at 9:30 p.m. EST

There’s no questioning Golden State’s (14-32 SU, 20-25-1 ATS) ability to score. Led by shooting guard Jamal Crawford (19.8 PPG) and forwards Corey Maggette (19.7 PPG) and Stephen Jackson (19.7 PPG), the Warriors file in as the second highest scoring team in the NBA (107 PPG). But even with all of this offense kicking, the ‘under’ is now 4-1 in the last five. And then there’s the 4-7 record in the last 11 which can be attributed to allowing 113.4 PPG. Straight up wins or loses, backers can still rejoice in the fact that Golden State has maintained a 7-4 ATS run in its last 11. Then again, you might just want to layoff on this one as the Warriors are just 5-15 ATS in their last 20 road games and are overall, 7-17-1 ATS when traveling this season.

After some ups and downs this season, New Orleans (28-14 SU, 19-21-2 ATS) has been able to put together a 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS run in the last six. Even with the Hornets shooting 48.7 percent from the field in the last five, coming off one day with an 8-9-1 ATS record should be taken into account. On totals talk, by New Orleans holding teams to scoring 88.8 PPG in the last 11 home stints, the ‘under’ has been money in the bank at 9-2. And the nine ‘under’ games that have hit in the last 11 have had books setting the total at an average score of 192.9. When the total has been installed between 180 and 194.5, New Orleans is 17-10 on the ‘under’ this season.

The Hornets have managed a 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS record since David West suffered back spasms last week. His status remains at ‘day-to-day’.

Golden State is 6-2 ATS in its last eight head-to-head meetings against New Orleans.

Charlotte at Denver – 9:00 p.m. EST

On a five-game, West Coast road trip, Charlotte looks to be suffering exhaustion after defeating the Lakers at Staples Centers (117-110). But books knew better then to lower the spread from 11 ½-points as the Bobcats were defeated by Portland, 88-74 on Wednesday night. However, we can’t take anything away from Charlotte after completing a 6-4 SU and 7-3 ATS run in the last 10. Denver will look to award backers some serious cash as a 17-7-1 ATS record after one-day of rest proves. Shooting 45 percent from the perimeter and 18.2 percent from three-point range could explain the Nuggets snapping a three-game winning streak in New Orleans (losing 94-81). But none-the-less, Denver’s defense, holding opponents to scoring 93.8 PPG in the last four games, has generated a solid 4-0 record on the ‘under’. Off an away loss this season, the Nuggets have been successful at 10-5 ATS and are a hot 6-2 SU and ATS in the last eight games versus the Bobcats.

Chicago at Sacramento – 10:00 p.m. EST

It doesn’t get much worse then this. Sacramento will prepare to keep itself above Washington as the worst performing team at home. The Kings are 7-15 SU but have cashed tickets inside ARCO Arena 14 out of 25 times this season. And seven straight defeats in a row combined with a 7-12 ATS record tops out Chicago’s recent five game slide. LVSC has cut Sacramento some slack in this contest, releasing an early line that put the home team at two-point favorites. As one to 2 ½-point favorites this season, the Kings have tanked at 0-5 ATS. The Bulls come to town in the midst of a seven-game road trip for which they’ve already spilt at one apiece. Above all, Chicago has covered those two games in Minnesota and L.A. (Clippers), improving to 3-1 ATS in the last four road games. But if we’re weighing Friday’s results on past meetings, then Sacramento’s 6-1 ATS record in the last seven head-to-head meetings must be noted (but just 2-2 ATS in the last four in Sacramento).
