NBA Today

SCOREBOARD

Friday, Nov. 21

Boston at Minnesota (8 p.m. EST). Former Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett and the NBA champions Celtics play their lone game in Minnesota this season. Minnesota beat Philadelphia on Wednesday night to snap an eight-game losing streak.

STARS

Thursday

— Rajon Rondo, Celtics, had 18 points and eight assists, outplaying new Pistons acquisition Allen Iverson, in Boston’s 98-80 victory over Detroit.

— Kobe Bryant and Vladimir Radmanovic, Lakers. Bryant scored 24 points and Radmanovic made all five of his 3-pointers and scored 15 points to help Los Angeles beat Phoenix 105-92.

LOTS OF LAKERS

Six players reached double figures as Los Angeles improved its record to a league-best 9-1 by beating Phoenix, 105-92. Kobe Bryant scored 24 points, Vladimir Radmanovic 15, Lamar Odom 13, Jordan Farmar 11, and Andrew Bynum and Trevor Ariza 10 apiece.

BOSTON’S BETTER

With their 98-80 victory Thursday night, the Celtics have beaten the Pistons in four consecutive regular-season games, plus a six-game playoff series en route to its unprecedented 17th NBA title. Detroit has been held under 90 points five straight times against Boston.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

With the Washington Wizards off to a dismal start while Gilbert Arenas recovers from knee surgery, he’s trying to find a silver lining. “I don’t want to see them struggle,” Arenas said at Madame Tussauds, where his wax figure was unveiled, “but if this is one of those years where we don’t make the playoffs or we finish in last place … that’s what happened to San Antonio and that’s how they got Tim Duncan and look at them now … and that’s for the better.”

SPEAKING

“They’re the best team. They’re 9-1. They’re playing good. Kobe’s playing team ball, keeping everybody involved. He’s got a lot of shooters around him. They’re a very dangerous team.”—Phoenix center Shaquille O’Neal after the Lakers’ 105-92 victory over the Suns on Thursday.

Utah (8-4, 6-6 ATS) at San Antonio (5-6, 4-7 ATS)

The Spurs will try to make it four wins in their last five games when they host the Jazz tonight in San Antonio.

Utah comes into this one riding a two-game SU and ATS winning streak after losing four of five on an East Coast road trip (1-4 ATS). On Wednesday, the Jazz scored a 105-94 home win over the Bucks, narrowly covering as 10½-point favorites. With point guard Deron Williams out all season with ankle issues, the Jazz have gotten outstanding play from reserve guard Ronnie Price, who had 16 points and six assists against Milwaukee.

The Spurs had a three-game SU and ATS losing streak stopped in Wednesday’s 91-81 loss to the Nuggets as a one-point home favorite. With guards Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker sidelined with injuries, San Antonio has had trouble scoring, failing to reach the 100-point mark in seven straight games and staying below 90 points in five of its last seven.

The home team has won nine of the last 10 meetings (SU and ATS) between these two, including the last five in a row, and the SU winner is 10-0 ATS in those 10 clashes. In the final meeting last year, San Antonio prevailed 109-80 as a 4½-point chalk. The favorite is 16-5 ATS in the last 21 matchups, and Utah has failed to win or cover in its last eight consecutive visits to San Antonio.

Utah is just 1-4 ATS in its last five road games, but the Jazz are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 against the Southwest Division and 4-1 ATS in their last five against Western Conference squads. The Spurs are in several ATS ruts, including 4-9 overall, 3-7 against the Western Conference, 2-5 at home, 3-10 against the Northwest Division and 2-5 when playing on a day’s rest.

The under is 13-5-1 in Utah’s last 19 against Southwest Division teams, but otherwise the team is on over streaks of 4-0 overall, 5-2 after a spread-cover and 4-1 on Friday. For San Antonio, the under is on runs of 19-7-1 overall, 7-0 over the last two weeks, 5-0 at home, 16-5-1 against Western Conference teams, 36-16 when playing with a day of rest and 8-2 on Fridays.

Finally, the over is 8-3 in the last 11 series meetings, including 6-0 in the last six in San Antonio.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Denver (8-4, 8-3-1 ATS) at L.A. Lakers (9-1, 7-3 ATS)

The Nuggets make a stop at the Staples Center in Los Angeles looking to extend their four-game winning streak and trying to halt an eight-game losing skid against the Lakers.

Denver has won seven of its last eight games, including Wednesday’s 91-81 victory in San Antonio as a one-point ‘dog. Since the addition of point guard Chauncey Billups, the Nuggets are playing better defense, holding the opposition to 92.5 points a game in its last seven after allowing 104 ppg in four contests without Billups.

The Lakers were in Phoenix on Thursday and dominated the Suns 105-92 as a 4½-point road chalk. Los Angeles has topped the 100-point mark seven times in its last nine games (6-3 ATS), they are outscoring the opposition by 14 ppg (105-91) and the defense is limiting opponents to 41.8 percent shooting from the field.

Denver hasn’t beaten Los Angeles since April 9, 2007, losing eight straight, including a four-game playoff sweep last spring as well as a 104-97 loss in Colorado on Nov. 1. However, the Nuggets cashed as 8½-point home underdogs in that contest, ending an 0-7 ATS slide against L.A.

Denver is 16-5 ATS in its last 21 Friday tip-offs, and the Nuggets are on further ATS streaks of 5-2 on the road and 6-2 against the Western Conference. Los Angeles is on a slew of ATS runs, including 12-5-1 after a spread-cover, 20-6-1 against Western Conference teams, 5-1 after a straight-up win, 9-2 after a double-digit victory and 4-1 on the second night of a back-to-back.

The over is 35-17 in Denver’s last 52 games on Friday, but the under is on runs of 15-6 overall, 13-4 against the Western Conference and 8-3 after a straight-up win. For the Lakers, the over is on stretches of 5-2 overall, 4-0 at home and 12-5 on Fridays, but they’ve stayed below the total in 10 of their last 13 against the Western Conference.

The under is 4-0 in the last four head-to-head meetings and 8-3 the last 11 matchups in Hollywood.

ATS ADVANTAGE: L.A. LAKERS

NBA RESEARCH REPORT
By Indiancowboy

Quick notes on yesterday: Figures that Boston would win big against Detroit as the public takes the dog and bets burned with a double-digit loss. The game goes under and it is apparent that the Suns are the Laker's Lap Dog consistently as once again they lose to them being held to 92 points at home and once again the game goes under.

Magic vs. Pacers

I leaned on the Pacers originally as they are solid at home, just take a look at the Hawks game, but having said that, the Magic are on a winning streak including wins on the road at Dallas and a big win at Charlotte. Hence, I stayed away.

New York vs. Milwaukee

I do have a play on the total in this game, which can be purchased in the link you see on the thread above. As per the side, look, there was just a big trade and there goes Crawford to the Warriors and in comes All Harrington who was great at Indiana but failry useless at Golden State. Mike D'Antoni thinks a new atmosphere will allow him to thrive in New York and maybe that's true. I actually leaned on Milwaukee as they return home from a tough Western Conference Road Trip and remember, the Bucks are much better this year as can be seen by their solid covers of late. I would have in fact, made a play on the Bucks if it wasn't for the fact they already beat the Knicks earlier this year which makes this a revenge game for the Knicks. no thanks. But, do have a play on the total, in fact, that is my POD today.

New Jersey vs. Toronto

Vince Carter usually looks forward to playing his old team on the road and remember, this is a BIG revenge game for the Nets. They should be fired up and the Raptors aren't necessarily coming off a loss. Devin Harris has added spike to this team as they beat the Hawks on back to back games and I can see the Nets staying competitive and who knows, maybe even winning this game outright. Hence, this will be my comp pick today.

Houston vs. Washington

Houston is the type of team you never know when they will lay down and I can see this game being closer than expected. Now, having said that, no thanks as I am not to one to trust Washington by any means.

Boston vs. Minny

Boston does seem dandy esp. after the big win over the Pistons. But, note, this is the biggest public play of the day as the Celtics are favored by 72% of the public. Just beware, as I wouldn't be surprised to see a Boston SU win but a Minny cover here.

New Orleans vs. Ok. City Thunder

Look, I'm all about the Hornets as they are a hard working team, but this year, they are just not the same and their record is indicative of it. This is a .500 team and frankly, they are a bit overrated at this point and now they are favored by 66% of the public at Oklahoma City. I can easily see the Thunder hanging tough as they return home against the Hornets here. Would I make a play on it? No. But, I would lean on the Thunder here to lose by single-digits at home, and who knows, if more shots fall than they are used to, I can see an outright win here for them.
