Friday Night Card
By Kevin Rogers

The Friday night NBA card is loaded with 11 games on the docket with several intriguing matchups. Three games involve both teams with .500 records or better, including a Finals rematch from 2006 in South Florida.

Mavs at Heat

The lone championship in Miami's franchise history came against Dallas four seasons ago, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win the series, 4-2. Since then, the Mavs are 3-0 at American Airlines Arena, while going for their ninth road victory of the season. The Heat has been off for four days following a 2-2 road trip out west that concluded with a victory at Sacramento on Sunday.

Dallas has struggled to cover the number recently, going 1-5 ATS with the lone pointspread win coming over the lowly Nets. The Mavs are 3-7 ATS since beating the Spurs in overtime on November 18, including a 2-6 ATS mark as a favorite. Rick Carlisle's team plays its best with two days of rest, owning a 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS record this season.

The Heat has been the ultimate 'fade' at home, compiling an 0-6 ATS mark the last six games at the AAA. When Erik Spoelstra's squad is off a victory, a low-scoring game is likely, as the Heat have finished 'under' the total in seven of the last ten off a win.

Blazers at Cavs

It's unusual to see the Cavs riding a losing streak, but Cleveland looks to snap a two-game skid returning home to host Portland. LeBron James and the Cavs stubbed their toe at Memphis and Houston this week, dropping to 15-7. The Blazers continue on a four-game road trip, splitting the first two games at New York and Indiana.

Portland has been decimated by injuries recently with Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez, and Travis Outlaw all out of the lineup. Even head coach Nate McMillan is sitting home with a ruptured Achilles' tendon suffered in practice. The Blazers have dropped six of seven ATS, with Portland's 102-91 win over Indiana snapping a six-game ATS skid.

Following a 1-6 ATS start at home, the Cavs have covered three straight at Quicken Loans Arena, including wins over the Mavs and Suns. In Cleveland's last two losses, the Cavs faced a pair of teams that were rested for three days. Portland comes into Cleveland with one day of rest, which plays into the Cavs' hands. Mike Brown's club is 6-2 ATS this season facing teams playing on one day of rest, including a 3-0 ATS mark when the Cavs are off a loss.

Magic at Suns

Orlando wraps up a four-game road trip in Phoenix, going for the season sweep of the Suns. The Magic knocked off the Suns, 122-100 on November 4 at Amway Arena, easily covering as 7 ½-point favorites.

Under Stan Van Gundy, the Magic are one of the top ATS teams on the road, covering eight of 12 games going into Thursday's action at Utah. Dating back to last season, Orlando is 24-12 ATS (67%) when receiving points on the road, including a 5-1 ATS mark with no rest as a road 'dog.

After starting the season 14-3, the Suns have dropped four of five both SU and ATS. A once automatic 'over' machine, the Suns are riding a streak of six consecutive 'unders.' Phoenix is 7-0 SU at home, but Alvin Gentry's team has not faced a team above .500 in the Valley this season.

What else to watch for:

The Sixers look to snap an 11-game losing skid, hosting the Rockets at the Wachovia Center. Philadelphia owns a putrid 1-9 ATS mark at home, including an 0-4 SU/ATS record as a home 'dog. The Rockets possess an 8-4 ATS ledger on the road, while finishing 'under' the total in six straight contests. The Sixers have averaged 84.5 ppg in the two games since Allen Iverson's return to Philadelphia, both losses to the Nuggets and Pistons.

Two teams riding three-game winning streaks hook up in the Big Easy with the Hornets entertaining the Knicks. New Orleans is 6-7 SU with Chris Paul in the lineup, but just 3-10 ATS, as the Hornets are 0-3 ATS since Paul returned from an ankle injury. The Knicks knocked off the Hornets at the Garden, 117-111 as three-point home 'dogs on November 2. New York is 5-2 ATS the last seven as road underdogs and 9-3 ATS the last 12 overall.

The Grizzlies and Thunder wouldn't be showcased in past years, but these two young squads are playing better recently. Memphis is coming off a pair of solid victories as home underdogs against Dallas and Cleveland, improving the Grizzlies record to 5-2 ATS the last seven at FedEx Forum. Oklahoma City has been great off a loss and terrible coming off a victory this season, with the Thunder beating the Warriors on Monday. OKC is 3-7 ATS off a SU win and 3-8 ATS off a pointspread cover.

Dallas (15-7, 12-10 ATS) at Miami (11-9, 10-10 ATS)

The Mavericks will try to make it seven straight wins over the Heat when these two square off inside the American Airlines Arena in Miami.

Dallas hasn’t lost to the Heat since their NBA Finals matchup in 2006, winning six straight but going just 2-3-1 ATS. The Mavericks went to Miami and scored a 111-96 win last season, easily cashing as two-point road favorites. They have won three straight in Miami (2-1 ATS) and gone 4-1-1 ATS in their last six trips to South Beach. Furthermore, Dallas is 11-5-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings and the road team is on a 7-0-1 ATS run in this rivalry.

Dallas edged the Suns on Tuesday, winning 102-101 but coming up short as a 4½-point home chalk. The Mavs have dropped two of their last three games (0-3 ATS). They are only managing 96 points a game in their last five contests, more than five points behind their overall average of 101.7.

Miami wrapped up a 2-2 road trip (3-1 ATS) with Sunday’s 115-102 drubbing of Sacramento as a 1½-point chalk. Miami has had trouble scoring at home this season, where they are just 4-7 ATS, averaging just 94.1 points a game and shooting just 31.3 percent from beyond the three-point line.

The Mavericks are just 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four against Southeast Division teams, but they are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games after getting two days off and 6-2 ATS in their last eight on the road. The Heat are on ATS slides of 4-9 overall, 0-6 at home, 2-7-1 against Southwest Division teams and 4-13 after getting three or more days off.

Dallas has stayed below the total in four straight against Southeast Division teams, but it is on “over” runs of 6-1 on the road, 4-1 on the road against teams with winning home records and 7-1 against Eastern Conference teams. Miami has topped the total in eight of 11 overall and five of six against Western Conference squads, but it is on “under” streaks of 10-4 at home, 16-5 after a straight-up win, 13-3 after a spread-cover and 11-3 against Southwest Division squads. Finally, the “under” has been the play in five of the last seven meetings between these two squads.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Portland (14-9, 11-12 ATS) at Cleveland (15-7, 11-11 ATS)

The Cavaliers are looking to snap a two-game losing streak when they welcome the Trail Blazers into Quicken Loans Arena.

Cleveland lost back-to-back games on the road Tuesday and Wednesday, falling in Memphis 111-109 in overtime as a 7½-point favorite on Tuesday and following it up with Wednesday’s 95-85 loss in Houston as a three-point chalk. The Cavs had won seven of eight overall and four straight before the brief road trip. They are on a six-game home winning streak.

Portland has alternated wins and losses over its last four games, including Wednesday’s 102-91 win in Indianapolis, cashing as a four-point road favorite. The victory snapped a six-game ATS losing streak for the Blazers, who had also dropped four of five SU.

The Cavaliers have won four straight (3-1 ATS) in this series and eight of the last 10 (7-3 ATS). They scored a 97-92 home win in overtime last season but came up short as a 10½-point favorite. Cleveland is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 series clashes, including 5-1 ATS in front of the home fans.

Portland is 5-1 ATS in its last six against Central Division teams and 8-2 ATS on Friday, but it is on pointspread slides of 1-6 overall, 1-4 on the road, 2-6 after a day off and 6-13 as a road ‘dog. The Cavaliers are on ATS runs of 19-7 on Fridays, 10-3 against Northwest Division foes, 36-17 after a straight-up loss and 8-1 against teams with winning records.

The Blazers are on a plethora of “under” streaks, including 12-5 on the road, 9-4 after a spread-cover, 4-1 on Fridays and 7-2 on the road against teams with winning home records. Cleveland has stayed below the total in four of five overall (all as a favorite), but it is on “over” runs of 4-1-1 after an ATS loss and 4-1 at home against teams with winning road records. In this series, the “under” is 4-2 in the last six matchups.

ATS ADVANTAGE: CLEVELAND

Orlando (17-5, 13-9 ATS) at Phoenix (15-7, 12-10 ATS)

The Suns will try to remain perfect at home this season as they take on the Magic at the US Airways Center.

Phoenix opened the season with seven straight home wins (3-3-1 ATS) but they’ve dropped four of their last five overall, including two in a row. So far this week, the Suns got crushed at the Lakers on Sunday, losing 108-88 and coming up well short as a 9½-point underdog, then fell 102-101 in Dallas on Tuesday, though they snapped a four-game ATS losing streak as they cashed as a 4½-point ‘dog.

Orlando had its six-game overall (4-2 ATS) and eight-game (6-2 ATS) road winning streaks snapped in Utah on Thursday, losing 120-111 to the Jazz as a 2½-point road favorite. The Magic tighten up the defense on the road, limiting the opposition to 93.6 points a game.

Orlando has already crushed Phoenix once this season, scoring a 122-100 home win back on Nov. 4, cashing as a 7½-point favorite. The Magic have won and covered two straight over the Suns after losing the previous six meetings (4-2 ATS), and they have cashed in each of the last four played in the desert. Additionally, the visitor is riding a 6-2 ATS streak in this series with the ‘dog cashing in 13 of the last 18 meetings.

Despite Thursday’s setback in Utah, the Magic continue to sport several ATS hot streaks, including 7-4 overall, 14-5 against Pacific Division teams, 40-17-1 as an underdog, 5-1 on Friday and 35-16-2 as road ‘dogs. Phoenix is just 1-4 ATS in its last five overall, but it is on positive pointspread runs of 11-5 at home, 16-7-1 as a home chalk, 6-2 after two days off and 7-1-1 on Friday.

The “over” is 5-1 in Orlando’s last six overall and 4-1 in its last five when playing the second night of a back-to-back, but the team is also on several “under” streaks, including 10-5 on the road, 4-0 as an underdog and 10-5 against the Western Conference. The Suns have gone over the posted number in five of eight Friday games, but they are on “under” streaks of 9-1-2 overall, 4-0-1 against the Eastern Conference and 9-2 against the Southeast Division. Finally, in this series, the over is 9-3 in the last 12 clashes, with the last five in a row in Arizona topping the posted total.

ATS ADVANTAGE: ORLANDO

Home-Again
By SportsPic

The Los Angeles Lakers taking Jazz behind the woodshed for a 101-77 spanking on Wednesday put a ten-game win streak on the line when they host T-Wolves. Playing sixteen of their first twenty games at Staples Center the Lakers enjoying home-cooking benefits enter the contest a league-best 14-2 (9-7 ATS) on home hardwood behind 104.7 points/game while allowing visitors a measly 94.0 PPG. Meanwhile T-wolves have opened 3-19 (11-11 ATS) including 1-9 (6-4 ATS) on the highway where they score 93.5 PPG while allowing a whopping 106.1 points per game. A mismatch to be sure, considering Lakers have won eight straight vs T-Wolves (5-2-1 ATS) and ten of eleven meetings (6-5-1 ATS). Yet, laying 16 to these bush dogs who are a profitable 13-7-1 ATS the past twenty-one on the road seems excessive. Take the points, knowing Lakers are 2-4 ATS last six laying 12 or more and that T-Wolves are 12-5-1 ATS as a road underdog of 11 or more, 23-6-1 ATS away vs. a team with a winning home record.

Two NBA Televised Betting Choices Friday
By Doug Upstone

The Cleveland Cavaliers suddenly find themselves on a two-game losing streak against Western Conference opponents after winning their previous 13, but both of those came away from Quicken Loans Arena. The Portland Trailblazers know rather well they're much tougher to beat at home.

LeBron James has had a triple-double the last two times the Cavaliers hosted Portland, and he'll try to help Cleveland avoid a rare three-game skid Friday night as it seeks a seventh straight home win both overall and against the Trail Blazers.

The Cavaliers (15-7, 11-11 ATS) won their final eight games against Western opponents in 2008-09 and their first five this season, but that streak was snapped Tuesday in a 111-109 overtime loss in Memphis.

Twenty-one turnovers plagued Cleveland against the Grizzlies, and they were a problem again Wednesday in Houston. The Cavaliers gave it away 20 times against the Rockets in a 95-85 loss.

"You have to take pride in avoiding them and we didn't. We just can't have unforced turnovers," said James, who had 27 points but committed five turnovers for the third straight game. "We needed to play with a sense of urgency earlier than we did."

Cleveland hasn't lost three straight since March 22-29, 2008 and is 17-3 ATS off a road loss over the last two seasons.

James is averaging a career-high 3.8 turnovers, though he's also dish out a career-best 8.2 assists per game, and Cleveland is at its best when he's getting his teammates involved. The Cavaliers are 9-2 when he has at least nine assists and 7-1 when he attempts 17 shots or fewer. Cleveland has covered 17 of their last 24 Friday night assignments.

The production of point guard Mo Williams, Cleveland's second-leading scorer at 16.8 points per game, has also been consequential to the Cavaliers' success. Cleveland is 11-2 if Williams hits 40 percent of his shots and 13-3 when he scores 12 points or more.

Williams averaged 22.5 points as the Cavaliers swept Portland (14-9, 11-12 ATS) last season - pouring in 33 in a 104-98 win at the Rose Garden on Jan. 21 - but James has been Cleveland's catalyst against the Blazers at home. The reigning MVP has averaged 27.7 points in leading the Cavaliers to a 6-0 record during his career when Portland visits, finishing with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 97-92 overtime victory March 19.

Three of James' 25 career triple-doubles have come against the Blazers. With Portland sporting a 6-5 road record (spread mark is the same), the Cavs are 14-4 ATS at home vs. a team with a positive visitors record.

Portland, meanwhile, has had to lean even more on its multitalented All-Star recently with its lineup depleted by injury. The Blazers lost Rudy Fernandez (sciatic pain), Greg Oden (knee) and even coach Nate McMillan to a ruptured Achilles' last week, and had lost four of five heading to Indiana on Wednesday.

Brandon Roy had averaged 25.0 points during that rough patch, but another big effort against the Pacers paid off. The 2007 rookie of the year had 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists in lifting Portland to a 102-91 win and they are 26-13 ATS off a double digit victory.

"I could almost fall asleep when (Roy's) got the ball," said assistant Dean Demopoulos, who's assuming head coaching duties while McMillan recovers. "That's how comfortable I feel with him. He always comes through."

Like the Cavaliers' success when James involves his teammates more, the Blazers don't typically thrive on Roy's big games - they're 3-5 when he scores 25 points or more.

Roy has averaged 19.4 points on 40.5 percent shooting in his career against Cleveland.

Portland's biggest advantage may be up front, where Shaquille O'Neal has been battling foul trouble lately and J.J. Hickson has averaged just 2.9 points in the Cavaliers' seven losses. Hickson and reserve Anderson Varejao will likely draw duty on Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge, whose averaged 23.0 points in his last two games against the Cavaliers.

Betonline.com has Cleveland as nine-point favorites with total of 184 and they are 23-12 ATS as a home favorite of 6.5 to 12 points since last season. Portland is 3-9 and 4-8 ATS in last 12 visits near the shores of Lake Erie and is 14-3 UNDER in road games on Friday nights over the last three seasons.

This ESPN game starts at 8:00 Eastern and is immediately followed by Orlando heading into the Arizona desert.

After a fruitless road trip, the Phoenix Suns probably can't wait for their next game at U.S. Airways Center. Awaiting the NBA's only unbeaten home team, however, is one of the league's best road squads. The Suns will attempt to keep their perfect record intact Friday night with their eighth consecutive home win against the Orlando Magic, who will try to put a second-half collapse behind them.

Following a 14-3 start, fatigue appears to have set in for Phoenix, who has played a league-high 15 road games. The Suns (15-7, 12-10 ATS) have gone from averaging 112.0 points during their hot start to 98.6 while losing four of five this month all away from home.

In the finale of a winless two-game swing Tuesday, they stayed close with Dallas before falling behind by 10 in the final period. Phoenix rallied to within a on Steve Nash's 3-pointer with seven seconds left, but couldn't catch the Mavericks in a 102-101 defeat.

"We've had 15 road games, so we're a little bit tired," Nash said. "We've got to fight through that. The legs are a little tired, but nobody cares. Nobody's going to feel sorry for us." That is particularly true when you have covered 11 of last 16 home games.

The Magic are definitely not one of those teams after seeing their six-game win streak and run of eight consecutive road victories end Thursday in Utah.

Orlando (17-5, 13-9 ATS) scored 60 in the first half and led by as many as 18, but saw its advantage cut to eight at halftime and allowed the Jazz to start the second half on a 14-3 run. "Once we gave them confidence, gave them an opportunity to really get rolling, it was tough to stop that machine," swingman Vince Carter said.

The Magic never recovered from there in a 120-111 defeat, their first away from home since Nov. 8. They had also previously won 23 straight dating back to last season when scoring at least 100, including a 122-100 home win over Phoenix on Nov. 4.

Despite playing without an injured Carter, Orlando had six players in double figures, led by Dwight Howard's 25 points. Ryan Anderson had his fourth career double-double - 20 points and 10 rebounds - to hand the Suns their first loss this season.

Carter, who scored a season-high 34 Thursday, has helped the defending Eastern Conference champions to a 10-3 (8-5 ATS) road record this season. Playing in 11 games away from home, Carter has averaged 21.7 points. Orlando is outstanding 18-5 ATS off a road loss over the last two seasons.

He leads the Magic with 20.1 points, just ahead of Howard (18.4). Carter also has scored an average of 25.6 points in 10 career games at U.S. Airways Center.

Amare Stoudemire, meanwhile, has led the Suns to a 7-0 (4-3 ATS) mark at home with 22.4 points on 61.7 percent shooting, but he also appears to be dealing with fatigue lately with one 20-point performance in his last seven contests overall.

Stoudemire led the Suns with 25 points and 14 rebounds earlier this season at Orlando. He missed last season's final meeting with the Magic, a 111-99 loss on March 3, with a partially detached retina in his right eye. The Suns big man and his teammates are superb 7-1-1 ATS in last Friday night contests.

Along with its third straight win in the series, Orlando is searching for its first victory in Phoenix since Nov. 14, 2001 (0-7 SU & 5-2 ATS) and they are 1.5-point road underdogs with total of 215.5. The Magic are 10-1 ATS after playing three consecutive road games 14-4 ATS after scoring 60 points or more in the first half last contest. The Suns haven't fared as well against quality road clubs with 2-6 ATS mark if they have win percentage of .600 or higher.

The total figures to be a dichotomy with these two teams and Orlando is 17-7 UNDER versus offensive teams scoring 103 or more points a game, while Phoenix is 21-4 OVER at home after playing consecutive road games. Yet it is interesting to find the Suns are 7-0 UNDER after allowing 100 points or more three straight games this season.
