Friday's NBA Tip Sheet
By Brad Young

Both of Friday’s ESPN games are ‘off the board’ due to injuries, but there is still plenty of value concerning a couple of contests. In fact, seven of Friday’s 13 games will not see an overnight line because of injuries. Now let’s break down three key matchups heading into the weekend.

**Sixers at Knicks**

-Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed New York as a two-point home ‘chalk’ over Philadelphia, with the total set at 213. This Atlantic Division contest is slated to start at 7:35 p.m. ET.

-Philadelphia (28-28 straight up, 26-29 against the spread) had dropped four games in a row SU and five consecutive contests ATS before upending Washington Wednesday as a 4 ½-point road favorite, 106-98. The combined 204 points eclipsed the 195 ½-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ cash the second consecutive contest.

-The Sixers had a slight advantage in rebounding, 40-38, while shooting a solid 50 percent (39-of-78) from the field and 46 percent (6-of-13) from behind the arc. Four starters reached double digits in scoring, led by Andre Iguodala’s 22 points and 11 assists.

-Philadelphia is 11-16 SU and 13-14 ATS away from home, with the ‘over’ going 14-12. The Sixers have been dropping those affairs by an average score of 99-95. Philadelphia concludes a four-game road trip with this matchup.

-New York (24-33 SU, 32-25 ATS) has alternated SU wins and losses the previous four outings after falling to Orlando Wednesday as a 2 ½-point home underdog, 114-109. That marked the third consecutive contest that the Knicks failed to cover. The combined 223 points toppled the 218 ½-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ improve to 4-1 the past five games.

-New York was outrebounded by the Magic, 46-42, while shooting 41 percent (41-of-99) from the field. Guard Nate Robinson stepped up with 32 points off the bench, while Wilson Chandler added 27 in the setback.

-The Knicks sport a 17-13 SU and ATS home ledger, with the ‘over’ going 18-12. The Knicks follow this matchup with Saturday’s road game at Miami.

-Philadelphia is 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS the previous 11 meetings with New York after winning the latest encounter January 24 as a 7 ½-point home ‘chalk,’ 116-110. The combined 226 points soared ‘over’ the 206 ½-point closing total.

**Blazers at Timberwolves**

-LVSC opened Portland as a six-point road favorite over Minnesota, with the total listed at 205. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.

-Portland (35-22 SU, 29-28 ATS) is currently mired in a two-game losing skid after Wednesday’s setback to San Antonio as a 1 ½-point road underdog, 99-84. The combined 183 points eclipsed the 179 ½-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ improve to 3-0-1 the past four outings. The Blazers had covered three games in a row before falling to the Spurs.

-Portland won the rebounding battle, 43-41, but lost after allowing San Antonio to shoot 54 percent (42-of-78) from the field. The Blazers shot 38 percent (32-of-85) from the field, and 29 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point land. Channing Frye paced the offense with 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Joel Przybilla added eight and 10.

-Portland has struggled to a 12-17 SU and 11-18 ATS road record, dropping those games by an average score of 97-95.

-Minnesota (18-39 SU, 26-30 ATS) has dropped four games in a row SU and back-to-back outings ATS heading into this matchup. The Timberwolves were roughed up by Utah Wednesday as a 7 ½-point home underdog, 120-103. The combined 223 points toppled the 212-point closing total, enabling the ‘over’ to improve to 4-0-1 the past five games.

-Minnesota won the battle on the boards, 40-36, while shooting 46 percent (38-of-82) from the field and 17 percent (3-of-18) from behind the arc. All five starters reached double digits in scoring, led by Kevin Love’s 24 points and 15 rebounds along with Ryan Gomes 24 and eight.

-The Timberwolves are a dismal 8-20 SU and ATS on their home court, with the ‘over’ going 16-11. Minnesota has been dropping its home outings by an average score of 105-100.

-Portland is 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS the last six meetings with Minnesota after winning the last encounter November 15 as a 1 ½-point road ‘chalk,’ 88-83. The combined 171 points never seriously threatened the 193-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ cash the second consecutive contest in this series.

-Portland center Greg Oden (knee) is ‘doubtful’ versus the Timberwolves.

**Lakers at Nuggets**

-LVSC currently lists Los Angeles as a 3 ½-point road ‘chalk’ over Denver, with the total set at 218. This contest is scheduled to start at 9:05 p.m. ET.

-Los Angeles (47-10 SU, 30-27 ATS) has won five games in a row heading into Thursday’s home matchup with Phoenix.

-The Lakers are a solid 21-6 SU and 16-11 ATS on the road, with the ‘over’ going 15-11. Los Angeles has been winning those games by an average score of 109-102.

-Denver (38-20 SU, 32-25 ATS) was mired in a three-game SU losing skid before slipping past Atlanta Wednesday as a 10-point home favorite, 110-109. The Nuggets have failed to cover their previous four matchups. The combined 219 points eclipsed the 203-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ improve to 3-1 the past four games.

-Denver dominated the Hawks on the boards, 43-34, while shooting 51 percent (39-of-77) from the field and 56 percent (10-of-18) from 3-point land. Point guard Chauncey Billups paved the way with 33 points and seven assists, while Carmelo Anthony added 23 and 10 rebounds.

-The Nuggets maintain a 21-7 SU and 16-11 ATS home ledger, with the ‘over’ going 15-12. Denver has been winning its home games by an average score of 106-101.

-Los Angeles has dominated this series with Denver recently by going 9-0 SU and 8-1 ATS the past nine meetings, while the ‘under’ has gone 7-1 the previous eight outings. The Lakers continued their dominance by winning the last matchup Nov. 21 as an 8 ½-point home favorite, 104-90, while the combined 194 points went ‘under’ the 205 ½-point closing total.

-Denver center Nene Hilario (knee) is ‘questionable’ against the Lakers.

Warriors playing for next season; Nelson to play kids more
By VIC TAFUR

The Warriors have been hard to figure for some time now. They let Baron Davis walk, threw a desperation contract to Corey Maggette, extended Stephen Jackson's contract and traded Al Harrington for another shooting guard, Jamal Crawford. There's also been behind-the-scenes front office drama and the mysterious Monta Ellis scooter injury.

Coach Don Nelson will clear things up for you starting Friday. Golden State (20-37 overall, 25-28-3 against the spread) is playing for next year. He is going to sit Crawford Friday and clear the bench.

“I'm going to give Jamal a day off against Charlotte so I can play some of the younger guys," Nelson said. “I'll do that periodically because I have a logjam at the '2,' and it's probably better not to try to play everybody.”

That's great news for second-year guards Marco Belinelli and C.J. Watson and not so great for Crawford, the third-leading scorer on the team at 19 points a game. Rookie Anthony Morrow should also see more minutes come his way, especially with Ellis out for another week with lingering stiffness in his ankle.

Crawford scored 50 points the last time he faced the Bobcats on Dec. 20 but is not openly complaining.

“Coach Nelson's been around 30 years. He's won 1,300 games. I'm not going to question what he's doing. He wants to play young guys and I understand,” Crawford said. “They worked really hard this year and they should be rewarded for that. They play 3-on-3 every day. Everybody's in the weight room busting their butts. So I'm happy for them.”

Up front, the Warriors are a little gimpy, with Andris Biedrins and Ronny Turiaf on tender ankles, Corey Maggette's shooting hand flaring up again and Brandan Wright pretty much done for the last seven weeks with a dislocated shoulder.

Golden State didn't do anything at the trade deadline and it has itself to blame. By signing Jackson to that three-year contract extension at the beginning of the season, the Warriors erased his trade value. Dallas or San Antonio sorely needs a shooter and defender with championship experience whose contract would have expired at the end of next season.

The Warriors could have gotten younger instead of heading steadfast into the future with a high-priced nucleus of Jackson, Ellis, Maggette, Crawford and Biedrins. That fivesome doesn't have the Lakers, Spurs and Jazz exactly quaking in their boots.

Rocket fuel: Losing Tracy McGrady for the season was just what the doctor ordered for Houston, which tries to wrap up a 6-0 homestand against Cleveland tonight. The Rockets are 16-6 without the star guard, who this week had season-ending microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Ron Artest has averaged 20.2 points since replacing McGrady in the starting lineup. He also spearheads a fine defensive effort with Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes, and in a win over Portland this week he completely took Brandon Roy out of his game.

Trade deadline dead: So much for all the talk of big deals. Phoenix did approach Miami about the idea of dealing Shaquille O'Neal back to the Heat. But Miami had no interest in reacquiring Shaq and his $20 million salary in 2009-10 salary. … The Heat spoke with Portland about Jerryd Bayless and Channing Frye, but the Blazers wanted more than Shawn Marion. At which point Miami finally shrugged and did the Marion-Jermaine O'Neal trade that had been rumored for months. Suffice it to say, the Heat aren't doing cartwheels about getting O'Neal – but he is a lot better than the other O'Neal, in their minds.

Friday Research
By Indiancowboy

Detroit vs. Orlando

There is no line on this game but Detroit actually beat this Orlando team earlier this year by 6 and they were dogs by 3.5 points. Of course, Orlando comes off a nice win and cover over NY winning by 5. Detroit is dismal. They have now lost 8 straight games and it seems everyone is taking their turn at them like a $20 hooker. This team has lost to New Orleans, Miami, Cleveland, Chicago, all on the road, San Antonio, Miami, Atlanta and Phoenix at home. Lean on Orlando given the revenge but I assume the line will be fairly hefty.

Chicago vs. Washington

The majority is on Chicago and why not, they come off a loss at Jersey and will likely bounce-back here. I just hate laying the -5.5 line. Note, it opened up at -4.5 and it has slightly gone up and will likely go up to 6 by game time. Washington is dismal right now and they did beat the Pacers at home recently, but got drilled by the Spurs only to lose to the Sixers as well. Chicago has already beat this team by 12 and 7 earlier this year. Lean on the Bulls, but so will 70% of the public. I wouldn't be surprised given the consensus to see this game go over.

Indiana vs. Boston

Boston comes off a loss and sure they will look to bounce-back but they beat this team in OT earlier this year on the road. So, Indiana clearly has revenge and Indiana is one of those teams that is great at home ATS of late. Heck, they beat the Lakers, Cavs, Magic all at home, injured or not and beat Chicago and Philly at home as well.

Miami vs. Atlanta

Atlanta has revenge from a DD loss to Miami earlier this year. This seems like a nice spot here for Atlanta as they come off a tough road trip and once again have revenge. Miami comes off a big win at home over Detroit and although no Bibby and maybe no Smith, I still lean on Atlanta.

Philadelphia vs. New York

The only problem with this taking NY here on the bounce-back from Orlando, is that NY has lost to Philly trice this year. Maybe NY just has a matchup problem with the big bodies of Philly it seems. Philly comes off a nice win at Washington and the total has been steadily doing down which actually indicates a defensive game which clearly favors Philly.

Portland vs. Minnesota

The last two times these two teams have met, the final difference was by 5 and 4. So, the fact the line is 6 is not all that unsurprising. Minny was competitive against the Lakers at home although they lost their wheels against the Jazz. The total is going up which indicates that Minny might be an active dog here.

Milwaukee vs. New Orleans

This seems to be a spot that Milwaukee can step up here it seems. They come off an ugly loss to the Mavs by 20 on the road (revenge game for the Mavs for a 30 point loss that Milwaukee gave Dallas earlier this season). This will likely be a low scoring game and getting the 9 points is nice and it might even go up to 10 by game time. NO beat this team by 14 at home and 4 on the road earlier this year. The key to this team since the injury to Redd is Ramon Sessions. If he has a good game, Milwaukee likely stays inside the number with the help of Villanueva and Jefferson.

OKC vs. Dallas

OKC has a goot shot here to bounce-back after a tough loss at GS in a game they were actually competitive early on and come off a tough loss to the Lakers at home where they were not all that competitive. Dallas comes off a big game over Milwaukee with revenge. I hate the -10 line here but OKC did hang by 4 against Dallas at home and with Dallas coming off such a big win, I wouldn't be surprised to see OKC do well here today.

Tips and Trends

Detroit Pistons at Orlando Magic

Pistons: Detroit will try to avoid losing nine straight games for the first time in nearly 15 years when they visit the Magic. About the only thing positive for the Pistons right now is that forward Rasheed Wallace will apparently not be suspended after picking up his 15th and 16th technicals of the season on Wednesday in a 90-87 loss at New Orleans. “I tried to get him out before he got it,” Detroit head coach Michael Curry said. “He’s an emotional guy. We got unraveled a little bit.” However, two of Wallace's earlier technicals were rescinded by the NBA, so he will get to play against Orlando.

Pistons are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 Friday games.
The UNDER is 15-6 in Detroit's last 21 road games.

Key Injuries - G Allen Iverson (back) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 87

Magic (-9.5, O/U 187): While the Pistons have fallen on hard times lately, Orlando has emerged and taken their place as one of the league's elite teams. Still, the Magic have dropped seven of the last nine regular-season meetings and eight of the last nine playoff games between the teams. Detroit won the only meeting this season back on December 29th, as Allen Iverson and Rodney Stuckey combined for 34 points. It's possible that both Iverson (back) and Stuckey (5.4 points per game in the last five) could be out of the starting lineup for this game.

Magic are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 home games.
The OVER is 5-1 in Orlando's last 6 games overall.

Cleveland Cavaliers at San Antonio Spurs

Cavs (-3, O/U 176): Cleveland is coming off its worst offensive performance of the season in a 93-74 loss at Houston on Thursday. Cavs star LeBron James was held without an assist for the first time in his career and finished with 21 points on 7-of-21 shooting. “I’m not happy with that at all,” James said. “I can’t remember the last time I didn’t have an assist, but as a team, we didn’t move the ball at all. We’ll just move on to the next game.” The good news is that Cleveland is 9-2 in the second half of back-to-back games and 9-1 in games following a loss this year.

Cavs are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 Friday games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Delonte West (wrist) is probable.
F Sasha Pavlovic (ankle) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 87 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Spurs: San Antonio point guard Tony Parker has picked up the scoring load left behind by Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, who have both missed time lately due to injuries. In the last two games Duncan has missed, Parker has averaged 38 points in wins over Dallas and Portland. The Spurs have won seven straight at home and five in a row overall, proving they will again be dangerous come playoff time when everybody is back healthy. “Tony Parker was a super stud again, and generated the offense again,” San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich said after he totaled 39 points and nine assists against the Blazers. “His leadership on the floor was exceptional.”

Spurs are 4-0 SU & ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-1 in San Antonio's last 9 games vs. Central Division.

Key Injuries - F Fabricio Oberto (thumb) is probable.
F Tim Duncan (quad) is questionable.
G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 84
