Friday NBA Tip Sheet
By Josh Jacobs
Heading into the weekend, Friday’s docket includes a loaded 11 games on tap. Instead of tearing into the top contending teams, today’s tipper will shroud itself around teams that are sitting just outside the playoff bubble. While the Western Conference has drawn a line in the sand – Phoenix is 6 ½-games behind Dallas for the No. 8 seed – the East is where the action can be found. From Chicago to New York, a total of five clubs find themselves out of the No. 8 spot by no more then 1 ½-games.
Houston at Charlotte – 7:00 p.m. EST
-- The Bobcats (28-36 straight up, 38-26 against the spread) have been sprinting down the stretch. A 6-1 SU and ATS performance in the last seven has helped maintain a 1 ½-game gap behind the No. 8 placed, Bucks.
-- A six-game winning streak was snapped in San Antonio as Charlotte was smacked for a 100-86 loss (most books had closed Charlotte as a 5 ½-point underdog). This put the ‘Cats at 8-8 ATS on the road versus teams playing above the .500 mark. Overall, Charlotte is 18-14 ATS versus teams with a winning record. Remaining on their schedule are just five teams playing over .500 ball.
-- Coming off the defeat against the Spurs, the Bobcats are 9-4 ATS off two days of rest, scoring just 1.2 PPG more then their opponent but giving up a low, 90.9 PPG. In the totals department, Charlotte is 5-1 on the ‘over’.
-- Hanging onto the No. 3 spot, the Rockets (42-24 SU, 31-34-1 ATS) have been relatively solid with the exception of losing to Utah (101-94) and the Lakers (102-96) during the last five games. Houston is 5-5 ATS in the last 10 and 3-1 ATS in the last four road games.
-- Contributing to the ‘under’ going 4-1 in the Rockets’ last five games is a field goal percentage of 46.4 while opponents have found the rim for a 45 field goal percentage. In the same five, the total score of those games has exceeded 200 points just once, averaging a combined total of 197.8 PPG. Books have closed the total at 200 points or more in three of the five contests.
-- Houston has taken six games in a row versus Charlotte and is 4-2 ATS. The last meeting between the two was on Feb. 22 where the Rockets trumped the ‘Cats, 99-78. Houston easily covered the six-point spread. The ‘under’ hit for the sixth time in the last eight head-to-head meetings.
Chicago at Philadelphia – 7:00 p.m. EST
-- The 76ers (31-31 SU, 28-32-2 ATS) are in control of their own destiny as they look to ward off Chicago (29-36 SU, 32-32-1 ATS) on Friday. Both teams have been off and on of late as Philly is 1-3 SU and ATS in its last four home games.
-- Some more home trends to pour down your throat include a 14-16-2 ATS record this season and the ‘under’ reigning dominant at 18-11-2 (62.1%) thanks to a defense holding opponents to 93.8 PPG. In the short term, the ‘Sixers are just 1-4 ATS in the last five overall and 3-9 ATS in their last 12.
-- The early line released has the Bulls as seven-point visiting ‘dogs. In this point range as the underdog, Chicago is 3-1 ATS this season. As the road underdog, the Bulls are 7-21 SU, getting outscored by a margin of 7.1 PPG. Giving up 106.2 PPG in this spot, the ‘over’ has been money, going 16-11-1.
-- Chicago is looking to snap a two-game losing streak (4-1 ATS in the last five) for which the team is 19-16 ATS off a SU loss and 17-14 ATS off an ATS defeat. However, a 4-7 ATS (36.4%) versus Atlantic division opponents should be looked upon with skepticism (and how about an 8-22 ATS streak in the last 30 games versus the Atlantic).
-- The Bulls last defeat was against Orlando (107-79) as eight-point underdogs. Another fade alert comes on the heels of a 12-14 ATS record off one-day of rest (3-4 ATS the last seven times off one-day of rest). Chicago is 1-5 ATS in its last six road trips.
-- In head-to-head meetings, the ‘over’ is 4-0-1 in the last five. The Bulls are 2-5 ATS in their last seven duels against Philadelphia while the underdog is a near perfect 6-1 ATS in the last seven.
Indiana at Atlanta – 7:30 p.m. EST
-- The third of four meetings between these two teams is important based on the fact that Atlanta (37-28 SU, 35-30 ATS) is looking to remain the fourth placed team in the East while Indiana (28-38 SU, 36-28-2 ATS) is playing for the No. 8 seed (currently a game and a half out of that spot).
-- After dropping six of eight games, Atlanta decided to turn up the heat by taking three straight at home against Detroit (87-83), New Orleans (89-79) and Utah (100-93). A 7-2 ATS run in the last nine has been a great trend for those backers taking advantage and a 6-2 run on the ‘under’ gives bettors cashing in even more reason to celebrate.
-- A 7-3 SU record in the last 10 home games accompanied by a perfect 6-0 ATS streak in the last six inside their own building is even more firepower for wagering on Friday’s home game. The Hawks are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 versus the Central.
-- The Pacers enter center court on a 7-3 ATS rip in the last 10. The offense for Indiana during the ATS run has produced 106 PPG while the defense is nowhere to be found, allowing 104.9 PPG. Translation; the Pacers are 5-10 SU and 7-8 ATS in the last 15 games that’s witnessed the defense floundering around by giving up triple-digit points.
-- The home team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight head-to-head matchups. Atlanta is 6-3 ATS in the last nine meetings. The ‘over’ is 4-2-1 in the last seven.
New York at Minnesota – 8:00 p.m. EST
-- Doubting that New York (27-37 SU, 36-27-1 ATS) would have a successful game in Milwaukee (winning 120-112), let alone having a chance in Detroit the very next day, this club is now poised to strike in its fourth road game in a row.
-- The Knicks are coming off a 116-111 overtime victory against Pistons for which they hurled up an insane, 99 shot attempts while their opponent wasn’t far off with 96 attempts from the field. As defense has been a major problem, New York allowed triple-digit scoring figures for the 10th straight time. In the last 20 games, the Knickerbockers have allowed 113.3 PPG (5.1 PPG more then its seasonal average).
-- The result of an offense draining the ball for a league, fourth best 106.3 PPG, and the lack of defense has seen the ‘over’ drop money in the bank 17 times in the last 20 games (thanks to that ‘over’ going 10 straight from Jan. 28 to Feb. 20.
-- Minnesota has dropped 13 of the last 17 games and has struggled in the books with a lame, 2-15 ATS record through the same free fall. Some good news, if any, is a 6-1 record on the under.
-- As the home underdog, the Timberwolves are 5-16 ATS (23.8%), getting outscored by a point margin of 8.3. Overall, Minnesota is 9-23-1 ATS at home this season (allowing 104.3 PPG).
-- The Timberwolves are 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings. Minnesota has been able to rack in five straight ATS wins while going 4-1 on the ‘over’ in the last five head-to-head meetings. The underdog is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
