STARS

Sunday

— Dwight Howard, Magic, had 32 points and 17 rebounds, and Orlando withstood a career-high 50 points by Dwyane Wade to rout Miami 122-99.

— Charlie Villanueva, Bucks, scored nine of his season-high 36 points in the fourth quarter to help Milwaukee beat Denver 120-117.

— Andrea Bargnani, Raptors, had 28 points and 10 rebounds to help Toronto beat New York 111-100.

— Troy Murphy, Pacers, had a season-high 27 points and Indiana beat Chicago 98-91.

— Lamar Odom, Lakers, had 25 points and 14 rebounds in Los Angeles’ 111-108 win at Minnesota.

MILESTONE MOMENT

Kobe Bryant scored 28 to move past Elgin Baylor into 20th place on the NBA’s career scoring list in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 111-108 victory at Minnesota on Sunday night. Bryant’s breakaway lay-in with 10:42 to play in the third quarter pushed him past the former Lakers great into third in franchise history, behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jerry West.

DISHIN’

Portland’s Steve Blake tied the NBA record for assists in a quarter when he handed out 14 during the first period in the Blazers’ 116-87 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. San Antonio’s John Lucas set the record of 14 assists during the second quarter against Denver on April 15, 1984. Blake finished with 17 assists, one shy of his career high.

STREAKS & SLUMPS

New York has lost nine straight in Toronto and 11 of 12 overall against the Raptors after falling 111-100 on Sunday. The Knicks’ last win in Toronto was a 109-103 victory on March 5, 2004. … Portland won its eighth consecutive home game, beating the Los Angeles Clippers 116-87. The Trail Blazers also moved within 1 1/2 games of first-place Denver in the Northwest Division. … Detroit’s 99-78 loss at Cleveland was its sixth straight, the first time the Pistons lost that many since February 2004.

MOVING FORWARD

Indiana beat Chicago 98-91 on Sunday to improve to 5-1 without Danny Granger, a first-time All-Star this season, and 4-1 without both Granger and Mike Dunleavy. Granger is expected to be out up to another two weeks with a foot injury, while Dunleavy is out indefinitely with a knee injury.

BACK IN BUSINESS

Delonte West scored 25 points in his first game since mid-January and led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 99-78 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. West, sidelined since Jan. 15 because of a fractured right wrist, was 8-of-11 from the field and made all five of his 3-point attempts.

NOT MISSING McGRADY

Ron Artest scored 26 points, Yao Ming added 19 points and seven rebounds and the Rockets continued to win without Tracy McGrady, beating the Charlotte Bobcats 99-78 on Sunday. Luis Scola had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Shane Battier sank three 3-pointers for the Rockets, who’ve won four straight games and eight of the last nine McGrady has missed with a sore left knee. McGrady announced Wednesday that he’ll have season-ending surgery, but Houston is 15-6 without him this season.

SCORING

Indiana beat Chicago 98-91 on Sunday despite a second-half stretch of 11 minutes without a field goal. The Pacers led 69-55 midway through the third quarter but didn’t hit another shot until a 3-pointer by Troy Murphy with 6:43 left in the final period.

FREE THROWS

Boston’s Ray Allen made his first five free throws in the Celtics’ 128-108 win at Milwaukee on Sunday night to run his streak to 72, breaking Larry Bird’s franchise record of 71. Allen missed his next attempt.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

Carmelo Anthony scored 33 points and Chauncey Billups added 21 for Denver, which ended a season-high eight-game road trip with a 5-3 mark after losing 120-117 at Milwaukee. Denver plays its first game at home since Feb. 3 on Monday against Boston.

SIDELINED

Golden State guard Monta Ellis will rest his surgically repaired left ankle for at least one week after experiencing occasional stiffness since his season debut for the Warriors last month.

SPEAKING

“My concern is when Dwyane goes into the Hall of Fame and they start putting off his top career games, it’s going to be like 50 versus Orlando. We’re going to fill up the entire screen. So, I don’t know what to tell you. When I coached Dwyane I really liked him, but I’m not so sure anymore. Our relationship is strained.”—A joking Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy, whose team beat Miami 122-99 on Sunday night despite a career-high 50-point performance by the Heat’s Dwyane Wade.

Monday Research
By Indiancowboy

Philadelphia vs. New Jersey

NJ defeated this team 85-83 on the road back in January. In fact, NJ defeated this team 95-84 prior to that as well. Hence, the Nets look to win 3 straight in one season from the Sixers which is tough to do on any team, nevertheless, a decent team like Philly. Philly comes off 3 straight losses inclduing the Heat at home. Philly has also missed its last 4 covers. Nj has lost 5 straight contests including 5 straight covers. In fact, Jersey has lost by double-digits in their last 5 contests to the Wizards at home, Dallas and Houston on the road, Spurs at home and the Magic on the road. I just don't know if I trust either of these teams, a small lean on Philly.

Indiana vs. New York

These teams have traded wins thus far. First, the Pacers came into NY and won 105-103 as an outright 2.5 dog on the road. Then, the Knicks came into Indiana, and won 122-113 outright as a 3.5 dog on the road. The Knicks had won back to back games and covered 3 straight prior to losing a home and home to the Raptors who had revenge. I know the Pacers have no Granger and Dunleavy, but that didn't stop them from winning outright at Minnesota or beating the Bulls at home. The Pacers also have a bit of revenge. No lean on the side or the total here as I can see it either way. Although if the Pacers are competitive, it is likel to be an over.

Boston vs. Denver

If you remember, the last time these two teams played, Denver beat Boston on the road Outright as a 10 point dog - and that was with Garnett. Boston comes off an impressive win over an Amare-less Phoenix team. Denver comes off a 17 point spanking to the Bulls as they return home. There is no line here overnight, but I am curious to see if Boston's revenge will outweigh Denver's ugly loss and meltdown in the second half of Chicago.

Atlanta vs. Utah

It's never a good idea to bet against Utah, in Utah (heck, I was guilty of it when the Hornets visited the Jazz last week). These teams have not met this year, but Atlanta gets 7 points and roughly 70% favor Utah here. Granted, I expect it to go down to 66% by gametime, but still, the public roughly is 2:1 in favor of the hometown Jazz. Atlanta comes off a tough loss at Portland and a failed cover as they have failed to cover their last 3 contests - all on the road. Utah has covered their last 4 and last 8 of 10 overall. Tough to go against the Jazz at home, this team beat a healthy Boston team with no Boozer, beat the Lakers - but I hate going with 70% or so of the public on a game.

New Orleans vs. Sacramento

NO really disappointed with their lack of show at Utah as at one point they were tied 76 all only to collapse late. These two have met twice with Sac winning the first contest Outright on the road as a 13.5 dog by a score of 105-96. Then, NO got revenge SU but Sac covered again when they were in New Orleans again losing 90-99 as the spread at that point was even larger at 15.5. Now, the spread is 7.5 with the Kings at home. Sac is only 2-8 SU of late, but does have revenge in this game, comes off a bad loss against Dallas and faces a banged up NO team a bit, who does get favored by the public by 66% - but who comes off a bad loss themselves at Utah.

Golden State vs. L.A. Clippers

These teams have met twice this year. On 11/15, GS won 121-103 on the road as a 3.5 dog ad then defeated this team 107-92 as a -10.5 favorite in late January. GS comes off a nice 13 point win over OKC winning 133-120. GS is 6-2-2 over their last 10 contests. The Clippers have lost back to back contests to Phoenix by scores of 119-142 and 100-140. They have lost their last 5 covers as well as they come off a terrible loss at the hands of the Blazers who crushed them by nearly 30 in Portland. There is no line in this game, but one would have to think the Clippers show some heart like they did against the Knicks by beating them in OT at home.

Tips and Trends

Boston Celtics at Denver Nuggets

Celtics (-2, O/U 203): While Kevin Garnett surely turned Boston into an NBA title contender, it's the youngest member of the team's starting five who has had the biggest impact when he performs well. That would be point guard Rajon Rondo, who scored a career-high 32 points and dished out 10 assists in a 128-108 win at Phoenix on Sunday. The Celtics improved to 13-2 when playing without Garnett, including 4-0 this season. They are a perfect 10-0 when Rondo scores at least 18 points. “As Rondo goes, this team goes,” Boston's Paul Pierce said. “If he plays as well as he’s playing, then there’s no way we can lose.”

Celtics are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games.
The OVER is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Kevin Garnett (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 105 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Nuggets: Denver will be playing its first home game in almost three weeks and returns to the Pepsi Center following a 5-3 road trip. The Nuggets struggled a bit defensively as they closed out the trip, giving up an average of 118 points in losses at Chicago and Milwaukee. They have won 11 of their last 13 home games and have beaten the Celtics four straight times there. Denver was also the first team to deal Boston a home loss earlier this season, beating the Celtics 94-85 back on November 14th.

Home team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 18-8-1 in Denver's last 27 games vs. Atlantic Division.

Key Injuries - F Nene Hilario (knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 103
