Saturday's Tip Sheet
By Josh Jacobs

There is no introduction necessary for a five-game card in the NBA on Saturday.

We’ll begin the tip sheet with an afternoon meeting between Philadelphia and Miami. The Heat are coming off a let down loss against Minnesota on Wednesday (111-104), dropping the ATS loss as a 9 ½-point favorite while they hitting the ‘over’ for the sixth time in the last nine games. Think about Miami’s 3-5-1 ATS stint this season when coming off two days of rest. The 76ers are in a two-game slide, getting outscored 100.5-90 PPG. Philly has dropped its last three games ATS and has collected on the ‘under’ in six straight. The ‘Sixers maybe 7-3 SU against teams in the Southeast division but are a mortal, 5-5 ATS. One thing to focus on is Philadelphia’s 7-2 ATS record in the last nine head-to-head games. And to add more firepower is the 7-1 record on the ‘under’ in the last eight clashes between the two teams.

San Antonio and Washington will begin the evening swing in hoops at 8:00 p.m. EST. While the Spurs bring with them an 18-10 away record, the Wizards are just hoping to keep this contest close as a 9-19 performance at home is an example of what’s transpired so far this season. Let’s also focus on Washington entering this game without a day of rest. Traveling back from New Jersey, the Wizards have disappointed backers (who have still remained on board) by going 5-6 ATS in back-to-back games. Since losing to Orlando and Toronto in back-to-back outings on Jan. 6 and 7, Washington has been on a 1-3 SU and ATS skid without rest in-between games. We might not think about Manu Ginobili (shin) playing in this contest, but without his presence on the court, the Spurs are 6-8 this season. The home team is 10-4-2 ATS in the last 16 head-to-head meetings. The ‘under’ is 7-3 in the last 10 gatherings.

Sacramento travels to Dallas after a quick trip to Memphis unfold on Friday. The Kings are another team in a back-to-back situation for which they’ve cut the cash evenly at 8-8 this season. Add the team’s six straight losses and a 1-14 record in the last 15 and we should expect a blowout in the making. The Mavericks are just 2-2 ATS in their last four but a 6-3 ATS run in the last nine (rolling back past the All-Star break) could be something to look at it before game time. Dallas is 8-2 SU but 5-4-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings against Sacramento. We’ll leave this breakdown by going against the grain and saying that the favorite is 10-4-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings against each other.

While New Orleans is looking to build on its success of a 4-2 performance in the last six, Utah is looking to throw down its 7th win in the last eight tip-offs. The Jazz have been a great home team since breaking the .500 mark during the ’05-06 season (the club was 18-23 in ’04-05). Since ’05-06, Utah is a combined 113-39 in its own building and just this season has added to home cooking by going 18-11 ATS and is 16-10 ATS as a home favorite. Not only have the Hornets struggled to add ‘Ws’ in the standings but a 5-1-1 ATS record against the Jazz in the last seven head-to-head meetings have been devastating for those backing this team. Mix in the favorite’s 5-1-1 ATS record in the last seven head-to-head contests, the home team going 4-1 ATS in the last five and forward, Tyson Chandlers’ absence from the court and reasons to support New Orleans are scarce at best.

Oklahoma City and Golden State will finish off the evening at 10:30 p.m. EST. The Warriors may be lackadaisical at best and a team to avoid at the window (25-27-3 ATS) but facing an opponent who’s 3-22 on the road could offset those wagering worries. Did you know that Golden State is 11-4-1 ATS as a home underdog, is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 home stands and is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six? Just be wary of the club’s 6-5 ATS record as the home favorite as most books have opened the Warriors as an early, eight-point home favorite. The Thunder are a staggering 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games overall and are 4-2 ATS in their last six despite dropping two of the last eight. Oklahoma is another group entering a contest with no rest for which they’ve accounted a 7-5 ATS record (off zero days of rest). Even more detailed is the Thunder’s minus-9.4 PPG scoring margin entering the second game of a back-to-back scenario in an away-to-away position (two straight road games). Off a straight up loss, Golden State is 5-14 ATS this season.

STARS

Friday

— LeBron James, Cavaliers, scored 55 points, one short of his career high, in Cleveland’s 111-103 win at Milwaukee.

— Leandro Barbosa, Suns, had a career-high 41 points as Phoenix routed Oklahoma City 140-118.

— Kobe Bryant, Lakers, scored 11 of his 39 points in overtime, leading Los Angeles past New Orleans 115-111.

— Ben Gordon, Bulls, scored a season-high 37 points to lead short-handed Chicago to a 116-99 win over Denver.

— Randy Foye, Timberwolves, scored a career-high 36 points in a losing cause as Minnesota fell to Indiana 112-105.

STREAKS

Sacramento snapped a six-game skid with a 115-106 victory over Memphis on Friday night. … Houston snapped a four-game home losing streak to Dallas with a 93-86 win. … New Orleans’ NBA-record streak of 13 consecutive overtime victories, dating to December 2005, ended with a 115-111 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. … Washington snapped a 13-game losing streak against Eastern Conference opponents with a 107-96 win at New Jersey. … Portland has won seven straight at the Rose Garden, where it improved to 22-5 overall with a 108-98 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

KING JAMES

LeBron James scored 16 points in less than 3 minutes to begin the third quarter, on his way to 55 for the night—one shy of his career high—in Cleveland’s 111-103 victory over Milwaukee on Friday. James scored his previous season high of 52 points at New York on Feb. 4. His career high of 56 came at Toronto on March 20, 2005.

BLAZING SUNS

Phoenix became the first team in 18 seasons to score at least 140 points in three consecutive games, beating Oklahoma City 140-118. The Portland Trail Blazers did it from Nov. 13-17 in 1990. The Suns did it for the first time in franchise history.

BIG WIN

Wilson Chandler scored a career-high 32 points and the New York Knicks matched their victory total from last season with a 127-97 rout of the Toronto Raptors. They can better last season’s 23-59 mark under Isiah Thomas with a victory Sunday afternoon in Toronto.

REVENGE

The Los Angeles Lakers improved the NBA’s best record to 45-10 with a 115-111 overtime win, and avenged a 116-105 loss to New Orleans on Jan. 6 that ended a 15-game home winning streak.

SHORT-HANDED

Ben Gordon scored a season-high 37 points to lead short-handed Chicago to a 116-99 win over Denver on Friday night. The Bulls, with eight players, had a short bench after making three trades before the deadline, and Lindsey Hunter didn’t get in until the last 1:07 of the game.

STEPPING IN

Rafer Alston, acquired by Orlando in a beat-the-trade-deadline deal with Houston on the same day Jameer Nelson scrapped his rehab and had surgery, arrived in Charlotte around noon Friday. He immediately took a physical, went through a crash course of the offense and was cleared to play about two hours before tipoff once the trade was finalized. He finished with three points, eight assists and just one turnover in the Magic’s 92-80 win.

SIDELINED

Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire, a starter for the West in Sunday’s All-Star game, had surgery Friday to repair a partially detached retina in his right eye and won’t be able to resume physical activity for about eight weeks—meaning he could be gone for the season.

FAREWELL

Larry H. Miller, the car sales mogul who turned the Utah Jazz into one of the NBA’s most stable teams, died Friday from complications of type 2 diabetes. He was 64. “Every citizen in our state feels a little empty today,” Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman said in a statement. “Larry was Utah and Utah was Larry.”

SPEAKING

“Everywhere I looked, I had a weapon to pass it to. I think point guards in this league would love to be in that situation. Everywhere you turn, you’ve got a guy who can flat-out shoot it or can drive it and finish.”—Orlando Rafer Alston, acquired Thursday from Houston, who had eight assists and helped his new team rout Charlotte 92-80 on Friday night.

Tips and Trends

New Orleans Hornets at Utah Jazz

Hornets: New Orleans has lost in its last five trips to Salt Lake City and is coming off a tough overtime loss against the Lakers on Friday. The Hornets got a season-high 31 points from Rasual Butler but saw point guard Chris Paul foul out in the extra session on a controversial foul against LA's Kobe Bryant. The Lakers also held a 32-15 advantage at the free-throw line, which helped negate a 32-19 surge by New Orleans in the fourth quarter that tied the game in an eventual 115-111 loss.

Hornets are 1-5-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
The OVER is 7-3 in New Orleans' last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Morris Peterson (foot) is doubtful.
F Tyson Chandler (toe) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 96

Jazz (-7, O/U 198.5): Utah owner Larry Miller passed away on Friday following a battle with diabetes, and the team should be extra motivated to win their fourth game in a row overall and seventh straight at home. “This is a sad day for me, our team, the fans of the Utah Jazz and the NBA,” Jazz point guard Deron Williams said. “Mr. Miller was a terrific man and friend. He changed the lives of thousands of people. We have all been blessed by his generosity and love for this community, and I am blessed to call him my friend. He gave us a lot of joy and we will miss him.”

Jazz are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games vs. Southwest Division.
The OVER is 13-5 in Utah's last 18 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 104

Saturday Research
By Indiancowboy

Philadelphia vs. Miami

These teams met earlier this year and Philly defeated Nevada by 14 at home. Prior to that these teams had met in Miami, and the Heat had won 106-83. Philly has dropped 3 straight covers including to Denver at home, Indiana on the road and Memphis (although they did win SU). So, you have a Miami teamt that has revenge, who comes off a SU loss after their trade to get othe poison known as Jermaine O'Neal (similar to the toxin known as Allen Iverson to team chemistry) and will look to bounce-back here. I don't see a line, but no lean b/c I'm not sure if Miami's chemistry is sound but they do have revenge once again, but Phillly definitely wants to hit the floor after the dissappointing loss to Denver. Miller, Wade and O'Neal and all questionable for this game.

San Antonio vs. Washington

No line here, but the Wiz definitely showed some heart winning at NJ with some revenge. They face the Spurs today and these two teams have not met this year. The Wiz have done decent in the second half so far as they did defeat the Twolves at home and now the Nets on the road. I'm interested in seeing a spread here but I assume it will be over 6 to 7 points and I think the Wiz might be able to be competitive here. Note, Ginobli is Out for this game and Butler is Questionable - if Butler does not play, this is a no lean, but if Butler does play, lean on the wiz.

Sacramento vs. Dallas

Another game that might be a surprise today is Sac facing Dallas. Sac actually beat this team outright early in the season only to see Dallas win big by 18 the next time around at home. Sac comes off a nice outright win despite being a 7 point dog at Memphis. Sac has covered 3 straight but face a Houston team that although was leading early, fell too the Houston Rockets on the road. Gooden and Nocioni are both questionable for Sacramento.

OKC vs. Golden State

The public favors GS slightly here at home over the Thunder. The Thunder come off a tough loss at Phoenix although they did put up 118 points. Just be wary though that the Thunder have only lost back to back covers once over the last 10 games as they are typically solid bounce-backs and frankly, they have been decent covers all year at 34-21 ATS. These two teams have met twice this year with the first time OKC winning at home by 7, and winning again in GS by 1 point on the road 122-121. Undoubtedlly, GS is not too fond of that and will be ready to play here. Lean on GS here as they come off a loss to the Lakers at home and of course, have revenge here as well.
