Inside the Paint - Sunday
By Chris David

Gamblers looking to build their bankrolls for the pair of NFL Championships can do so with some early NBA afternoon matinees and then chase or press their bets with an evening showdown in Canada.

Let’s fill you in on all the details for each tilt and break ‘em down!

1:00 p.m. EST - L.A. Clippers (19-23 SU, 20-21 ATS) at Washington (14-28 SU, 15-24 ATS)

It’s not the prettiest matchup but gamblers still have the opportunity to make some cash when the Clippers and Wizards go head-to-head at the Verizon Center. The Clippers and Lakers were both kicked out of the Staples Center due to “Grammy Week” which ends on Sunday, Jan. 31.

Mike Dunleavy’s team started their eight-game road trip on Thursday with a 20-point (105-85) loss at Denver. The Clippers have struggled all year on the road (5-14 SU, 8-11 ATS) but they do have a chance to win here against Washington, who hasn’t been great at home (8-13 SU, 8-13 ATS).

Bettors looking at the total should note how the Clippers have watched the ‘under’ go 16-6 at Staples Center, but the ‘over’ has produced a 12-7 mark on the road. Prior to Thursday’s ‘under’ ticket in Denver, the Clips had watched the ‘over’ cash in six straight games. Make a note that the Wizards have seen the ‘under’ go 5-2 in their last seven.

Los Angeles defeated Washington 97-95 on Dec. 14 as a two-point home favorite in their first regular season meeting. The home team has won four straight in this series and the last two wins by the Wizards at home were by double digits. The ‘over’ is on a 3-1 run during this stretch.

1:05 p.m. EST – Dallas (28-15 SU, 19-24 ATS) at New York (17-25 SU, 20-21 ATS)

The Mavericks wrap up their five-game road trip on Sunday with an afternoon matinee at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks. Dallas has started the trip by going 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS, and the two losses were by double digits. The offense has been missing for Rick Carlisle’s team (90 PPG) during this strech, and that’s helped the ‘under’ go 4-0. Despite the recent run, Dallas has proven to be a legit team on the road (15-8 SU, 14-9 ATS) this season.

New York has picked things up after a slow start but it still can’t find the right tune at home (10-12 SU, 11-10 ATS). The days of running and gunning under head coach Mike D’Antonio have gone away in his second season, which can be evidenced by a 25-17 ‘under’ record.

Even though Dallas is 2-8 ATS in its last 10, the oddsmakers still made the Mavs short favorites (-3) against New York and deservingly so. They’ve dominated New York recently, winning seven straight overall and three consecutive meetings at MSG. The Mavs have covered five of the games during this stretch, and all three road victories were by double digits. The ‘under’ has gone 5-2 in the last seven.

The Knicks are 5-6 ATS as home underdogs this year.

6:05 p.m. EST - L.A. Lakers (33-10 SU, 19-22 ATS) at Toronto (22-22 SU, 21-23 ATS)

Sunday’s three-game slate ends in Canada when the Lakers and Raptors battle from Air Canada Centre. Not surprisingly, Los Angeles opened as a road favorite and even though Toronto has been a tough out at home (14-6 SU, 11-9 ATS) this season, the team has gone just 3-5 ATS as home ‘dogs. And if you look at the six losses that Toronto sustained at home, five of them came against quality opponents in the Magic (twice), Hawks, Celtics and Suns.

It’s more than fair to say that Los Angeles is on the same level with those clubs if not a step above. Phil Jackson’s team hasn’t played many games on the road (10-7 SU, 6-11 ATS) and they haven’t been kind to gamblers backing them outside the Staples Center. After losing at Cleveland (87-93) on Thursday, the Lakers bounced back on Friday with a win and cover at New York (115-105). Sunday’s game will be the third of an eight-game trip for the Purple and Gold and third game in four days, so fatigue could be a factor.

Toronto appeared to be turning the corner and finally got itself back to .500 but the team is 3-4 both SU and ATS in its last seven. The Raptors did rally past Milwaukee (101-96) on Friday but failed to cover as 6 ½-point home favorites.

The Lakers have captured four straight and seven of the previous eight meetings against the Raptors and that includes three of four in Toronto. Total players should make a note that the ‘over’ has cashed in four straight and the last two contests played in Canada saw a combined 222 points posted in each game.

Los Angeles has gone 13-2 against the Eastern Conference this year with both losses coming against the Cavs. Toronto owns a 7-7 ledger against the West.
