NBA Today

SCOREBOARD

Sunday, Nov. 9

Boston at Detroit (6 p.m. EST). Allen Iverson’s debut before the Detroit fans highlights an Eastern Conference finals rematch. The Celtics beat the Pistons in six games last season on their way to the NBA title.

STARS

Friday

— Devin Harris, Nets, scored a career-high 38 points in New Jersey’s 103-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

— Dwyane Wade, Heat, had 33 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists as Miami beat the San Antonio Spurs 99-83.

— Mike Bibby, Hawks, scored all of his 19 points in the first half and added 12 assists in Atlanta’s 110-92 rout of the Toronto Raptors.

— LeBron James, Cavaliers, had 27 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and four blocked shots to help Cleveland beat the Indiana Pacers 111-107.

— Paul Pierce, Celtics, had 18 points and 10 rebounds as Boston beat the undermanned Milwaukee Bucks 101-89.

— Jason Richardson and Raymond Felton, Bobcats, each scored 20 points as Charlotte held on to beat the New Orleans Hornets 92-89.

— Ron Artest, Rockets, scored 23 points in Houston’s 92-83 victory over the winless Los Angeles Clippers.

HURTING SPURS

San Antonio, already without Manu Ginobili, will be without Tony Parker for at least two weeks after he sprained his left ankle in the first quarter of a 99-83 loss to the Miami Heat. Parker was leading the NBA in scoring following his career-best, 55-point effort in a double-overtime victory over Minnesota on Wednesday. Ginobili is rehabbing an ankle injury that will cost him the first quarter of the season.

WELCOME HOME

Chauncey Billups made a triumphant return to his hometown with 15 points in the Nuggets’ 108-105 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in Denver. He was honored with an ovation before the game, then just before tip-off grabbed a microphone and addressed the capacity crowd. There was a video tribute to him at the end of the first quarter, including shots of students at his former elementary, middle and high schools all welcoming him back, not to mention the players at the University of Colorado.

A GRAND ACHIEVEMENT

Jerry Sloan became the first NBA coach to win 1,000 games with one team when the Utah Jazz beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 104-97. Utah fans chanted “Jerry Sloan!” and “Jer-ry! Jer-ry!” at the end in honor of the coach, who is 1,000-596 with the Jazz. Sloan’s overall coaching record is 1,094-717 with the Jazz and Chicago Bulls.

SUN DOWN

Shaquille O’Neal took a seat in the Phoenix Suns’ 100-83 loss at Chicago, part of a plan to rest him periodically throughout the season during back-to-back sets. O’Neal is expected back in the lineup Saturday at Milwaukee.

WINLESS WIZARDS

Washington is off to another bad start, falling to 0-4 with a 114-108 loss to the New York Knicks. The Wizards started 0-5 last season, a record they will try to avoid matching when they visit the Orlando Magic on Saturday.

DOUBLING UP

Andris Biedrins had 23 points and 12 rebounds in Golden State’s 109-104 loss to Memphis. It’s the 13th consecutive double-double by Biedrins, the longest active streak in the NBA and the longest by a Warriors player since Nate Thurmond had 13 straight in 1973.

BRAD’S BACK

Brad Miller had 11 points and 10 rebounds in the Sacramento Kings’ 121-109 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. It was the first appearance this season for Miller, who missed the first five games for violating the NBA’s drug policy.

SPEAKING

“I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what to say.”—Tim Duncan, after the Spurs’ latest injury, Tony Parker’s sprained left ankle in a 99-83 loss to Miami. Parker will miss at least two weeks, joining Manu Ginobili on the sidelines.

Rockets-Lakers Preview
By Josh Jacobs

Even with all of the NFL action taking place on Sunday, a few games of hoops add some variety for gamblers to wager on. One contest taking center stage is the undefeated Lakers going head-to-head against Houston at the Staples Center. Tip-off is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. EDT. Bodog.com has opened L.A. as a 7 ½-point home favorite with a total sitting at 187.

Not only are the Lakers a perfect 4-0 straight up this season but backers have cashed in with a profitable 3-1 ATS performance. Beating opponents by point differences of 38, 20 and 18 is nothing short of dominant, and scoring triple-digit figures in three of the four wins has resulted in books installing this team as double-digit favorites twice this season.

A few good reasons for the Lakers running through opponents includes the team shooting for 43.5 percent from the field, a blistering 45.6 percent from three point range and getting extra looks at the bucket with 51.8 rebounds per game (13.3 offensive rebounds per game). L.A. is in-fact leading the league with an average rebounding margin of 12.3 (own rebounds versus opponents rebounds).

Two of the biggest contributors on the glass have been Pao Gasol and fourth-year center Andrew Bynum. In a 106-88 blowout over the Clippers on Nov. 5, Bynum snatched up 17 rebounds, while his defensive explosion of four blocks finalized the stat laden evening.

And then there’s the home factor. The Lake Show has won and covered both contests inside their own building. Let’s not look past L.A.’s defensive effort at home which has allowed opponents to score just 82 PPG on shooting 36.8 percent from the perimeter.

The Rockets have gotten off to a decent start. Two straight losses against Boston and Portland derailed a three-game winning streak to begin the season, but a bounce back victory against the Clippers (92-83) on Friday was positive reinforcement. Books have thought highly of Houston by installing them as favorites in all but one of its games (as much as a 14-point favorite against Oklahoma on Nov. 1).

One area that the Rockets need to improve on is in the turnover department. Houston has mishandled the ball for 12.2 turnovers per game. And grabbing just 10.2 offensive rebounds per game has exposed the team’s average height of six feet six inches.

If history has anything to say about Sunday evening’s contest then Houston should have the upper edge with a 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS record in the last five head-to-head ballgames against the Lakers. But trends can also work against the visiting underdog here as backers of the Rockets have been burned with a 5-11 ATS ticket busting record in the last 16 get togethers. However, look to research total wagering as the ‘over’ is 5-2 in the last seven games played in L.A. between these two squads.

What L.A. has done against the grain is win with plenty of days off in-between. We’re entering the third week of the season and the Lakers are already 2-0 ATS with three or more days of rest.

Houston is coming off a 92-93 win over the Clippers on Friday but its worth noting that one-day of rest has netted this team a slow 0-2 ATS start. It’s been on back-to-back games that the Rockets are 2-0 ATS.

Expected to miss another week or two of the season, Houston’s Shane Battier will be looking at a possible sixth man spot on the roster. Yao Ming bruised his knee on Friday night but reports indicate that his playing status for Sunday won’t suffer.

Tips and Trends

Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons

Celtics: Boston used outstanding defense against Detroit a year ago in winning the regular-season series along with a second-round playoff series. The Celtics held the Pistons to an average of 87.7 points on 43 percent shooting in nine games. The total went UNDER in seven of those games, and Boston is leading the NBA in defensive field-goal percentage at 38 percent this season.

Celtics are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Boston's last 11 road games.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Pistons (-2, O/U 187): It will be interesting to see how new Detroit guard Allen Iverson adjusts to playing at The Palace of Auburn Hills on a regular basis. Iverson has shot just 40 percent from the field during his career at The Palace despite averaging 24.4 points per game there. He scored 24 points and dished out six assists in his first game in a Pistons uniform on Friday, resulting in a 103-96 loss at New Jersey. Detroit as a team shot a season-low 37 percent from the field against the Nets.

Pistons are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 94

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers

Rockets: Houston's Ron Artest is coming off one of his best games with his new team, as he scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 92-83 win over the Clippers on Friday. Still, Artest said the team is still not playing up to its potential and can play much better. "We’re still searching to find ourselves," Artest said. "We haven’t played good basketball yet. We need to play 48 minutes consistently. We have a long ways to go, but this was a good test for us. It’s coming together and it’s going to happen."

Rockets are 5-11 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
Rockets are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Yao Ming (knee) is probable.
F Shane Battier (foot) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 90

Lakers (-7.5, O/U 188): It's hard to complain about an 18-point win over an opponent, but LA head coach Phil Jackson and star guard Kobe Bryant did just that following a 106-88 rout of the Clippers last Wednesday. "When you don’t shoot the ball well, you’ve got to defend," Bryant said. "That’s what we did." The Lakers held their crosstown rivals to 39 percent shooting, which helped them overcome shooting below 40 percent for the second straight game. "The mantra is that defense wins ballgames, your offense comes and goes," Jackson said. "If you just rely on your offense all the time, it’s going to disappoint you at some level."

Lakers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in LA's last 8 home games.
