Dallas (40-26, 32-34 ATS) at L.A. Lakers (52-13, 34-31 ATS)

After two days off, the Lakers will try to complete a Texas trifecta when they host the Mavericks inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles scored back-to-back wins and covers in Texas last week, winning at Houston 102-96 as a 3½-point ‘dog Wednesday and then getting a 102-95 victory in San Antonio the following night as a three-point pup. The Lakers are 29-4 at home this season, but just 16-17 ATS.

The Mavericks had their three-game winning streak snapped Friday night in Oakland when they fell to Golden State 119-110 as a 1½-point favorite. The 119 points was the most Dallas has allowed since Jan. 25 when it got smoked in Boston 124-100 as a nine-point pup.

The Lakers have dominated this rivalry lately, winning five straight (2-3 ATS), including both meetings this season. On Nov. 11, Los Angeles got a 106-99 win in Dallas as a 5½-point chalk and then scored a 114-107 home win on Nov. 28 but came up short as a 10½-point favorite. The visitor is on a 6-0-1 ATS run in this series, and the Mavs have gotten the cash in their last four visits to the Staples Center.

Dallas is just 2-6 ATS in its last eight roadies overall and 2-5 ATS in its last seven as a pup, but it is 11-1 ATS in its last 12 after a non-cover and 4-1 ATS in its last five against Pacific Division squads. The Lakers are just 1-4 ATS in their last five as a favorite, but they are on positive pointspread runs of 6-1 after getting two days off and 6-2 against Southwest Division teams.

The Mavs have topped the total in seven of 10 overall, but otherwise it’s been all “unders” for Dallas, including 7-2 on the road, 17-6 on Sundays and 7-1 as an underdog. For Los Angeles, the under is on runs of 5-2 overall, 4-1 as a favorite, 4-1-1 on Sundays and 4-0 at home against teams with losing road records. However in this rivalry, the over is 5-1 in the last six clashes overall and 6-2 in the last eight in Hollywood.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Utah (41-25, 35-31 ATS) at Orlando (48-17, 41-23-1 ATS)

The Jazz don’t have much time to recover after a triple-overtime loss in Miami Saturday, heading up the Florida coast to Amway Arena in Orlando to take on the Magic.

Utah has followed up a 12-game winning streak (9-3 ATS) with back-to-back SU and ATS setbacks, including Saturday’s heartbreaking 140-129 setback in Miami in three overtimes, failing as a two-point chalk. Including Wednesday’s 100-93 loss in Atlanta as a 1½-point underdog, the Jazz are just 13-19 SU (15-17 ATS) on the highway this season.

Orlando has won six of seven overall (5-2 ATS), most recently knocking off Washington 112-103 Friday, getting the cash as a 7½-point favorite. The Magic have been tough defensively, allowing just 92.2 points a game over the last five, and they surrender just 91.8 ppg at home this season.

The Magic are 9-1-1 ATS in this series dating back to 2004 and they scored a 103-94 victory in Utah on Dec. 13, pulling off the upset as a 7½-point underdogs However, last season in Orlando, the Jazz prevailed 113-94 as four-point underdogs. The pup has cashed in five straight meetings, with the visitor getting the money in four of those five. Finally, prior to last year, the Magic had covered four straight against Utah at Amway Arena.

Utah is 12-6 ATS in its last 18 overall and 4-2 in its last six on the road, but the Jazz are on ATS slides of 2-5 against the Southeast Division, 2-5 on the second night of a back-to-back and 2-7 on the road against teams with a winning home record. Orlando is on a plethora of ATS runs, including 35-16 overall, 20-6 against the Western Conference, 5-0 on Sundays, 6-1 after one day off and 4-1 against Northwest Division teams.

For the Jazz, the under is 6-2 in their last seven overall, 4-1 in their last five on Sunday and 4-2 in their last six against teams from the Eastern Conference, but the over has been the play in seven of their last 10 on the second day of a back-to-back. Orlando is on “under” streaks of 15-7 at home, 5-2 against Western Conference teams and 4-1 against teams with a winning record. Lastly, the under is 4-1 in the last five matchups in this series.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

What bettors need to know: Mavericks at Lakers
By MATT SEVERANCE

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (-10.5, 212)

Season series

The Lakers have beaten the Mavericks in Big D (106-99, when L.A. was -5.5) and in L.A. (114-107, when Dallas was getting 10.5) this season. That extends Los Angeles' win streak in this series to five. Dallas is an incredible 3-32 in its past 35 at the Lakers but has managed to cover in the past four trips. If they playoffs started today, Sunday's game would be the first-round matchup in the West.

The Mavs enter off a 119-110 loss at Golden State Friday night, which ended Dallas' three-game winning streak. Jason Kidd had his second triple-double of the season (his first game against the Lakers, against whom he has four career) and Dirk Nowitzki had at least 20 points for the ninth consecutive game. But the Mavs were pounded on the boards to the tune of 28 second-chance points for Golden State. Sunday's game concludes a four-game road trip for Dallas.

The Lakers enter off impressive wins in back-to-back nights against the two other Texas teams. Thursday's victory in San Antonio gave Los Angeles the Pacific Division crown, making it the first team in the West to clinch a playoff spot.

Well-deserved day off

The Lakers' Pau Gasol said he was looking forward to a little rest following Thursday's win. He played 84 total minutes against the Rockets and Spurs, shooting a combined 57.6 percent. Coach Phil Jackson canceled Friday's practice to give his guys a breather, adding that his top priority was getting Gasol some rest after having to battle Yao Ming and Tim Duncan.

Los Angeles is home for three games, where it has won six in a row (3-3 ATS), then heads out on a season-high seven-game trip.

Injury report

Those early-season meetings might be a bit misleading because the Lakers had Andrew Bynum in both. The big man totaled 29 points and 20 rebounds in the two games. Bynum, out since Jan. 31 with a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee, started running on a treadmill this week but he's still not expected back until April.

The Mavericks didn't have Josh Howard for either meeting with the Lakers because of various injuries. The team's third-leading scorer likely won't play Sunday, either. He has missed the past four games with an injured left ankle, with Dallas going 3-1 ATS in that stretch. Howard did participate in a team shootaround Friday but isn't expected to be ready to return.

Dallas will be down two other regulars Sunday as well. Jerry Stackhouse, who has played in just 10 games this season with a chronically sore right foot, is back working out with the team but also isn't yet ready to return.

And former Laker Devean George, who has been starting for Howard, suffered cartilage damage in his right knee at Portland Wednesday. He might need surgery which could end his season. George would have guarded Kobe Bryant plenty Sunday.

With those three injuries, the Mavs are down to Antoine Wright, Matt Carroll and Gerald Green as the only healthy swingmen on the team. Coach Rick Carlisle said he would experiment with some other options, such as James Singleton and even possibly moving Kidd to small forward occasionally.

Laker lineup change

The Lakers' two-game winning streak (2-0 ATS) is due in part to the unselfishness of small forward Luke Walton. On the team flight to Houston Tuesday, Walton suggested to Jackson that he be moved from the starting lineup to the second unit in an effort to give that struggling No. 2 group (known as the Bench Mob) a boost.

Walton said the No. 1 unit had enough play makers in Bryant, Gasol and Lamar Odom. Walton thought he could “facilitate” the offense with the reserves. Jackson agreed, which meant Trevor Ariza moved into the starting five.

Both guys have filled the stat sheet in the two games, with Ariza totaling 18 points, five assists, nine rebounds and six steals. Walton has put up 14 points, three assists, nine rebounds and a steal.

“It's been better for both the second unit and the first unit," Ariza said to reporters. "They've played better and we've played better. It's working out."

Sunday NBA Research
By Indiancowboy

Indiana vs. Toronto

Indiana won by 7 last time at home covering the -4.5. These two teams have split the regular season series with each one winning at home. Toronto has lost 8 of 10 SU and comes off an OT loss to the Pistons at home. There is no line here but Indiana is typically a solid road dog of late despite being banged up, but Toronto has revenge and desperately needs a win for morale at home.

Portland vs. Atlanta

Portland beat this team by 10 at home with a similar -4.5 spread. Now, the Hawks lay the same number in Atlanta. Portland has lost to Houston, Detroit and SA all on the road of late - Hawks have covered 4 straight against the Jazz, Pacers, Hornets and Pistons. A lean on Atlanta to keep it going and get their revenge at home.

Memphis vs. Detroit

Detroit barely defeated the Raps on the road in their last contest. They beat this team by 8 on the road. Memphis has covered 5 of 6 of late though, including Houston, Boston and Philly. Tough to go either way given how well Detroit is playing overall but Memphis can be a tough dog as they were down by just 3 at halftime at Boston - and down by 7 after 3q there.

Boston vs. Milwaukee

Bucks have covered both times these two teams have played. Boston won in OT in Milwaukee last time out. Boston comes off a nice win against Memphis at home, this team only beat Jersey by 4 on the road and did lose to the Clips. Milwaukee coming off back to back losses at home I think will be very game for this contest with revenge and 70% of the public backing Boston could be in for some trouble here.

Miami vs. Philadelphia

Miami beat this team by 6 at home earlier this year. In my opinion, Wade should be crowned the MVP, given he has done the most with less - although if you argued Lebron has done the most with the less - I can agree with you there . There is no line on this game, but I have to respect how well Miami is playing and I have to respect Philadelphia's revenge as well, no thanks.

Dallas vs. L.A. Lakers

Dallas does not have Howard in this contest and the Lakers beat this team by 7 at home and 7 on the road and now are laying around -9.5. Dallas comes off a 9 point loss to GS and the Lakers come off big wins against SA and Houston on the road. This team is 52-13. Props. I can't lay the points with the Lakers here b/c all too often I have seen the Mavs lose SU but they will be game for despite no Howard and will likely make a game of it - having said that, their room for error is small as if either Dirk or Terry has a bad game, this could be a blowout for L.A. Note, the offshore line took a hit from -10.5 to -0.5 upon release in favor of Dallas.

Injury Reports

Indiana: Granger is Doubtful.
Toronto: Bargnani is Questionable.
Boston: Davis is OUT.
Detroit: Wallace is Questionable.
Dallas: Howard is OUT.
NY: Duhon is OUT. Robinson is Questionable.
Cleveland: West is Questionable.
Orlando: Hedo is Questionable.
Washington: Butler is Questionable.
Golden State: Biedrins is Doubtful. Maggette is Questionable.
Clippers: Randolph may Return.
