NBA Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Nov. 11

New York at San Antonio (8:30 p.m. EST). New York beat Utah 107-99 on Sunday to improve to 4-2, the first time the Knicks have been two games over .500 since they were 16-14 on Jan. 1, 2005.

STARS

Monday

— Paul Pierce, Celtics, scored 22 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter to lift Boston over Toronto 94-87.

— Dwyane Wade, Heat, had 19 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, and Miami rallied from a 10-point deficit midway through the final quarter to beat New Jersey 99-94.

— Brandon Roy, Trail Blazers, scored 27 points to lead Portland to their first road win with a 106-99 victory at Orlando.

STATS

The Heat are 3-0 at home for the first time since the 1999-2000 season . … The Grizzlies are 4-22 all-time in Phoenix and have not beaten the Suns in the Valley since November 16, 2005. … Portland’s bench outscored Orlando’s 40-12 in the Trail Blazers’ 106-99 victory.

STRONG START

Phoenix Suns coach Terry Porter is off to the best start for a coach in franchise history at 6-2.

SEE YA

The Nuggets waived Antonio McDyess one week after obtaining him from Detroit along with Chauncey Billups and Cheikh Samb for Allen Iverson. The move was expected as Denver tries to cut costs. McDyess’ agent, Andy Miller, had said the chances of him playing for the Nuggets were “very low to zero.” The Pistons would welcome McDyess back, but they cannot sign him for 30 days.

HEADING HOME

Utah center Mehmet Okur is returning to his native Turkey to deal with an illness in his family. The Jazz said Monday they have excused Okur so he can be with his family. No other details were released. Okur is Utah’s second-leading scorer at 15.5 points per game and has been averaging 6.5 rebounds.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 37 points and eight rebounds, but no other Oklahoma City player scored more than 14 points in the team’s fourth straight loss, 107-99 to Indiana.

SIDELINED

Sacramento Kings guard Kevin Martin will miss at least a week after spraining his left ankle in a victory over Golden State on Sunday night. Martin is the NBA’s 11th-leading scorer at 22.4 points per game. He had 27 points against the Warriors when he was hurt.

SPEAKING

“He’s a big part of what they do and him missing the free throws took them out of their rhythm. I think that was Channing (Frye) and LaMarcus (Aldridge) doing a great job of trying to fight with that monster.”— Portland guard Brandon Roy on Orlando star Dwight Howard’s struggles at the foul line. Howard, a 48 percent free throw shooter on the season, was 2-for-6 from the line in the fourth quarter of the Magic’s 106-99 loss Monday night.

Fargo's hot and cold NBA bets: Week 3
By MATT FARGO

The NBA is now in full swing and our eight-month marathon of the pro basketball season is under way. Matt Fargo will look into hot and cold NBA bets throughout the season.

Tuesday – Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls 8:35 p.m. ET

Are the Hawks for real or is their 4-0 start just a fluke? I’m on the ‘for real’ side.

In what was supposed to be a blowout series last year, Atlanta took the world champion Celtics to seven games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The Hawks remain an undervalued team - they have been favored by fewer than three points in both home games while getting at least eight points in both road games.

The loss of Josh Smith will no doubt hurt but there is plenty of frontcourt depth to make up for it. The Bulls have been hit or miss as their victories have been blowouts while the losses have also been on the large side.

Kirk Hinrich is gone for up to three months which hurts the backcourt depth that was extremely young to begin with. Chicago is still a public team while the Hawks are on no one’s list and will continue to present excellent value.

Atlanta (5-0, 4-1 ATS) at Chicago (3-4, 4-3 ATS)

Off to their best start in more than a decade, the Hawks try to remain the only unbeaten team in the Eastern Conference when they invade the United Center for a battle with the Bulls.

The Hawks faced their toughest test of the young season on Sunday at Oklahoma City but outscored the Thunder 31-23 in the fourth quarter to pull out an 89-85 victory, coming up just short as a 4½-point road chalk for its first non-cover of the season. The last time Atlanta began a season with at least five straight wins was back in 1997-98, when it started off 11-0. The Hawks are averaging 96 points per game and allowing 85.8 ppg and out-shooting opponents by an average of five percentage points (44.3-39.2).

The Bulls enter tonight in a 1-3 slump (2-2 ATS), most recently falling 106-97 to Cleveland on Saturday as a two-point home underdog, the team’s first defeat at the United Center this year. Chicago has been held under triple digits in five of its last six games.

These teams split four meetings last year, with the host winning each time. However, the Bulls went 3-1 ATS in the season series a year ago and they’re 8-2 SU in the last 10 meetings (4-0 at home), 6-1 ATS in the last six clashes overall and 6-1 ATS in the last seven battles in the Windy City. Lastly, the favorite has cashed in five of the past six head-to-head tussles.

Atlanta is 2-6 ATS in its last eight road contests, 2-5 ATS in its last seven against the Central Division and has failed to cash in five straight Tuesday affairs. Chicago is 1-4 ATS in its last five against the Southeast Division and 1-6 ATS in its last seven when going on two days’ rest, but 5-2 ATS in its last seven on Tuesday and 4-0 ATS in its last four after a non-cover.

The under is on streaks of 5-1 overall for Atlanta, 4-0 on the road for Atlanta (3-0 this year), 10-4 for Chicago overall, 7-2 for Chicago at home, 5-0 for Chicago against the Southeast Division and 7-3 for Chicago on Tuesdays. Finally, the last four meetings between these teams at the United Center have stayed low.

ATS ADVANTAGE: CHICAGO and UNDER

L.A. Lakers (5-0, 4-1 ATS) at Dallas (2-4 SU and ATS)

The Lakers shoot for their sixth straight win to begin the season when they travel to Dallas to battle the struggling Mavericks.

Los Angeles has blown out four of its first five opponents by double digits, with the most impressive victory coming Sunday against the Rockets, as the Lakers cruised 111-82 as a seven-point home chalk. L.A. has scored at least 104 points in four straight games and is winning by an average margin of 23 points per game (107-84) while out-shooting the opposition 45.4 percent to 39 percent (47 percent to 34.2 percent from three-point range).

Hours before the Lakers pummeled the Rockets at the Staples Center on Sunday, the Mavericks became the first team this season to lose to the Clippers, falling 103-92 as a five-point road chalk. The Mavericks went 1-2 SU and ATS on their three-game road trip to San Antonio, Denver and Los Angeles, and they’ve dropped their first two home contests by double digits, losing 112-102 to Houston and 100-81 to Cleveland.

The Lakers went 3-1 against Dallas last season, but 1-2-1 ATS. The host has won eight of the last 10 clashes overall, but the visitor went 3-0-1 ATS last season. Also, the underdog has cashed at a 10-3-1 clip in the last 14 meetings.

Going back to last season, the Lakers are on ATS runs of 22-10-1 on the road, 17-5-1 against the Western Conference, 12-5 on Tuesdays, 4-1 against the Southwest Division and 8-1 after a double-digit victory. Dallas is in ATS slides of 5-11 overall, 3-9 at home, 3-8 on Tuesdays and 2-6 when playing on one day of rest, but the Mavs had cashed in four straight against the Pacific Division before Sunday’s upset loss to the Clippers.

For Los Angeles, the under is on runs of 2-0 on the road this year, 7-2 against the Western Conference, 5-1 versus the Southwest Division and 6-1 when playing on one day of rest. Also, Dallas sports under streaks of 9-3 at home, 4-1 after one day of rest and 11-4-1 on Tuesdays.

ATS ADVANTAGE: L.A. LAKERS and UNDER

NBA Tuesday Previews
By Andre Gomes

Milwaukee @ Cleveland

The Cavs are perfect this season at home with a 3-0 record and the good news for them is that they will play their next 3 games at home. The team is coming from a win at Chicago with Lebron once again dominating the game down the stretch and that wasn't surely the last time that will happen. Lebron James is already the league's best scorer.

Today they will face the Bucks who coming from back to back losses against Boston and Phoenix, which wasn't a surprise. Michael Redd will be out for this game and this is really bad news for them. Even though they had a terrible record last season, the Bucks finished the series against the Cavs with a 3-1 record and 4-0 ATS! Mo Williams was almost unstoppable last season on this series and maybe that's why he is at Cleveland right now. The Bucks have covered the spread in their last three away games against the Thunder, the Knicks and the Celtics and with them having a large spread today for sure, maybe it won't be a bad move to take them, but without Redd, Milwaukee loses a lot of their perimeter shooting ability and the Cavs are shooting lights out right now: 4 games in a row above the century mark.

Utah @ Philadelphia

The Sixers need to do much better than they did on their two games in Florida last week, where they lost to Miami and to Orlando by a combined of 33 points. The team has been one of the disappointments of this early season, having in account all the expectations they had for this season. The positive factor for them is that they haven't played since last Thursday and so, they had time to prepare for this game and correct their errors. The team is second last on turnovers per game!

The Jazz lost for the first time this season at New York against the Knicks, in a game where they committed a season high of 20 turnovers and also for the first time this season, the absence of Deron Williams was noted. For this game, the Jazz will also be without Mehmet Okur, who went to Turkey yesterday and so the team will be without two of their usual starters for this game. Last season Utah won both games of this series and they will be looking for a bounce back after their first defeat of the season, but the Sixers need to win this game badly.

Denver @ Charlotte

The Nuggets are 2-0 since Billups joined the team, while the Pistons are 0-2 with Iverson, so it looks like Denver made a good trade and the team has improved. Today they will come to Charlotte to face the Bobcats and this will be in theory a good spot for Denver. However, I have to refer that the team hasn't played well offensively and on their last game against Memphis, they had 23 assists and 22 turnovers, with Billups shooting 7-30 FG since he joined Denver.

The Bobcats lost at home against Toronto, in a game which was a classic letdown for a team who had beaten the Hornets in their previous game. Charlotte scored just 79 points, with J-Rich shooting 5-15 FG, Wallace 2-11 FG and Felton 4-11 FG. These three players will need to shoot much better tonight, in order for them to be competitive. Besides their win over the Hornets, Charlotte has been constantly defeated by power clubs, the problem is to know if Denver is already at a power club level. The two wins with Billups are a good sign, but we need to see how they will behave on the road with Billups on the roster, especially as their new starting PG is used to defeat teams from the Eastern conference.

Atlanta @ Chicago

Atlanta is with the Lakers the only two teams who are yet to lose this season. If that's not a surprise in the case of the Lakers, it is a surprise in the case of Atlanta, who have been playing a great basketball, especially on the defensive area. However, this would be a good spot to bet against them, after all they are coming from a game where they barely won against the lowly Thunder and today they will play on a city, where they haven't won since 2004.

However, the Bulls are currently dealing with some problems. Even though they have a lot of Point Guards on their roster, just one will be available for today (Derrick Rose) and if that wasn't enough, also PF Drew Gooden is injured and the Bulls won't be at 100% for today. The absence of Hinrich was noted in their previous game against the Cavs, as the Bulls had a lot of bad decisions down the stretch and they were outscored by 20-32 in the last quarter of the game, as they lacked the leadership that Hinrich usually provides. Even though I like the Bulls in here, we can't underrate this team of the Hawks, who even without Josh Smith has managed to keep winning and we can't say the same about the Bulls without Kirk Hinrich.

LA Lakers @ Dallas

The Lakers seem to be unbeatable right now, as they are currently with a 5-0 record and they have won those five games with a winning margin of 22.4 points. They had the biggest test so far this season on their last game against the Rockets and even though they trailed by 16 points at one time in the first quarter, they made a furious 95-50 run, in order to easily defeat the Rockets. The addition of Bynum to the starting lineup to be the team mate of Gasol on the paint has been explosive down the glass, as the Lakers are outrebounding their opponents this season by an impressive mark of +12.60 reb/game!

Today they will play at Dallas against the Mavericks, who are coming to this game from two defeats in a row on the road against the Nuggets and the Clippers. The team is still trying to adjust to a new system and without Josh Howard, it will necessary for everything to work perfectly for them today, in order to be competitive today. Last season, all games of this series were ballgames, with neither team winning a game by more than 7 points, so Dallas may be an active home dog in here.

New York @ San Antonio

The alarm has rang in San Antonio and Gregg Popovich has even shaved his beard, this may look like a joke, but having in account the Spurs are 1-4 right now and they will be at least one month without Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, their situation is at least alarming. Tim Duncan will be more important than ever and the Spurs who used to be one of the best defenses of the league will enter this game as the 5th worst defense on the league, in terms of FG% allowed!

Today they will face the Knicks, who are in an opposite situation, the team isn't used to win and they are now coming into this game with a winning streak of 3 games and they will look to win four games in a row for the first time since 2004! Mike D'Antoni has always struggled against the Spurs, but these Knicks seem to be very confident right now and they have defeated Utah, one of the few teams who were yet to lose this season. However, this will be a very tough task for them, even knowing the Spurs are struggling in the offense right now.

Detroit @ Sacramento

The Kings are on a roll right now and they are playing where they like to play: at home. The team after an horrible road trip, where they were destroyed in their last 3 games, recovered and won their following 3 home games against Minnesota, Memphis and Golden State. That's not surprising, considering the Kings were already very strong at home last season. It's important to refer that Kevin Martin won't play today and we all know he is the best player of the team and he is the go-to player of the team down the stretch.

Today they will receive the Pistons who have lost their last two games and coincidently or not, it is also the number of games they have played since Allen Iverson joined the team. Last Sunday, the Celtics made a statement at Detroit and the Pistons were completely dominated, only managing to score 10 points on the second quarter. The question in here is to know if they had a bad day or if it's something related to Iverson and the lack of chemistry between him and the other players of the team. If the problem is the second option, then the Kings are an excellent home dog today, if a bounce back of the Pistons isn't expected.

Minnesota @ Golden State

Finally the Warriors had good news with the return of Corey Maggete, who is an important player on this team, who had a tremendous lack of offensive solutions on the last few games and that's an huge concern for the Warriors, as we all know they can only win games by outscoring their opponents. The team is coming from two losses in a row and they have also lost 3 of their last 4 games.

Today they will receive the Wolves, who are currently on a losing streak of 5 games. In fact, the team has just won their season opening game. Against the Blazers, the Wolves almost won the game, but fell short down the stretch and lost another one. Al Jefferson has been in good form and against this team of the Warriors, he should be capable of playing well once again. I don't see a major edge of one team over the other and this game may be an authentic ballgame. It's also important to refer that the Wolves have covered their last 3 games of this series, while always being big dogs: 12.5, 7.5 and 11.5 points.

NBA RESEARCH REPORT
By Indiancowboy

Atlanta vs. Chicago

So, my Hawks are undefeated. They are 5-0 and that is huge in the Eastern Conference when many teams will be hovering around .500. Heck, my Hawks are #1 in the East as even the Celtics, Cavs, Pistons, Magic all have losses. But, not my Hawks. This team has a chip on its shoulder and won at New Orleans, won at Orlando and has covered 4 of its last 5 contests. Hinrich remember is out until mid January with a thumb injury. The Bulls played well against the Cavs but struggled to close the door in the fourth quarter as the Cavs just absolutely took over at that point with Lebron. The line on this game moved from -1.5 quickly to -4 for the Bulls despite a split in the public. Josh Smith is out for the Hawks in this game. Having said this, the sharp line movement worries me a bit, but no lean on the side and a small lean on the under.

New York vs. San Antonio

With Tony Parker out, this team is a different team. Look, the Spurs are 1-4 and 0-3 at home. This team is 0-5 ATS. This Knicks team is good. Sure, they are. They are 4-2, they beat the Jazz at home and won at Washington. On any given day, I firmly believe the Knicks can beat anybody in Madison Square Garden. If the Heat can beat the Spurs by 16 on the road, look what the Knicks could possibly do. Look, at some point the Spurs have to step up and for that reason, this game is a no play for me. But, I can easily see this game going either way and I am staying away from it consequently.

Milwaukee vs. Cleveland

The Bucks are not a bad team at all thus far in the year. They have Richard Jefferson, Bell, Bogut, Villanueva but certainly need an upgrade from Ridnour who was 3/12 from the floor in their latest loss to Phoenix at home. This team had covered 3 straight before that including beat Washington at home in overtime and New York on the road. Cleveland is doing something the are not used to and that is scoring points galore. They have hit over a 100 in the last 4 games and face a Bucks team that has gone over in their last 3 games. Note, that Michael Redd is out for this game. But, that did not stop this team from being competitive at Boston and this is a game that I think Milwaukee might be able to hang tough in. Remember, they lost to Boston in a tight game by 11 on the road and would have covered this spread there. I don't see Cleveland getting up for this game in a big way either and see them sleeping walking a bit through the first half. Lean on the Bucks here and lean on the under as well.

Detroit vs. Sacramento

Look, I have to be frank. Detroit has not impressed me whatsoever. With the new look Pistons, they are 0-2. The Kings on the other hand are not a bad team. The Kings are 3-0 at home and 3-4 on the road. But, what is important is the fact that this team is undefeated at home and catching 7 points. The Pistons are on the public eye heavily and they are finding it very tough to cover any spread whatsoever. This team has covered 3 straight -3 spreads including Golden State, Minnesota and Memphis. This game likely goes over with the dog/over principle but the line has been steadily dropping. I like the points here with the Kings except fr the fact that Martin is listed OUT for this game which is extremely frustrating as otherwise, they would be a great play at home here. Nonetheless, a small lean on the under here. After all, without Martin, this team's scoring options are much more limited.

Denver vs. Charlotte

It always raises an eyebrow when you see 73% of the public riding a road favorite. Such is the case with the new look Nuggets at Charlotte today in their first road game with Chauncey. It is obvious by the way that the Pistons got robbed in this deal. The "answer" known as Iverson is nothing more than a poison that infects good chemistry and I can understand Joe Dumars was looking to shake things up but all he has done is to have a winless Detroit Pistons team since the onset of Iverson. But, who knows, maybe it will take some time and they will get some chemistry soon. Listen, Charlotte can play. I know it's a pain to take them sometimes, but they lost to the Raptors at home and are on a bounce-back here and this is a game they could win outright at home as the Nuggets barely got passed the Grizzlies and Mavs. Heck, I think Charlotte can win this one as they beat the Hornets at home earlier in the year. Charlotte has not lost back to back games ATS this year either. This game is likely going over as well.

Jazz vs. 76ers

I don't know if you know this or not, but a big revenge game here for the 76ers. Remember, there is a reason why this line is -4 for the Sixers. Heck, the public prefers the Jazz here on the road at +4 slightly. But, the Sixers with last year's team got real close to defeating the Jazz so they have that bit of revenge angle. Both teams come off road losses as the Jazz lost to the Knicks on the road and the Sixers lost to the Magic on the road. Note, though that Okur is out for this game as is Harpring and Williams is doubtful. When you take all that into account plus the line movement towards Philly, a lean on the Sixers here to get it done after a loss which they have been typically very good in accomplishing.
