Tuesday's NBA Preview
By Josh Jacobs

There’s just over a dozen or so games left on the board for most teams this season. Many questions remain, mostly centering around the Eastern Conference and team’s sitting not far outside the bubble. So here we go again, an eight-game card scheduled out for Tuesday night.

Orlando at Cleveland on NBA TV – 7:00 p.m. EST

The Cavaliers (53-13 straight up, 42-24 against the spread) improved their home record to 29-1 on Sunday, downing the Knicks, 98-93 as 10-point home favorites. Cleveland found the basket, draining 48 percent of its shots from the field while the defensive effort combined with New York’s scoring woes contributed to the Knicks shooting 37 percent from the wood. Sunday’s game marked the second straight game that the Cavs dropped an 'L' in the ATS department, now at 2-4 ATS in the last six. The good news is that Cleveland is an impeccable 17-7 ATS (70.8%) when coming off an ATS loss. The Cavs are 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games against Southeast teams.

Orlando (49-17 SU, 42-23-1 ATS) is a solid 23-10 SU and 22-10-1 ATS on the road this season. The fear that the Magic would sputter without Jameer Nelson in the lineup has subsided as the team is now 13-6 SU and 11-8 ATS without the starting point guard. And then there’s Orlando’s 8-1 ATS cleanup job against the Cavaliers in head-to-head matchups. Parlaying this success has been the ‘under’ going 7-2 ATS in the same nine-game stretch. Over the last 10 outings, the Magic have shot the ball at a 47 percent pop from the perimeter and have outrebounded their opponent in seven of those contests (by a margin of 45 rebounds in the 10 total games). The real difference in comparative stats between these two clubs lands in favor of Orlando holding the opposition down to scoring 89.2 PPG in the last five versus Cleveland’s 99.8 PPG defensive effort.

Detroit at Dallas – 8:30 p.m. EST

The fourth and final meeting between these two teams this year has Dallas (40-27 SU, 33-34 ATS) defending its home court. A 24-8 SU home record hasn’t reflected on a much more debilitating 14-18 ATS drop off for backers out there. A recent four-game road trip beginning in Phoenix on Mar. 10 (winning 122-117) resulted in a 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS report. The most recent defeats came in consecutive games at Golden State and L.A. (Lakers). Dallas wrapped up the weekend by shooting 41.2 percent while giving up close to 50 percent by its opponents. But the main event to point out is the Mavs’ 4-1 ATS record in the last five games (split as favorites and underdogs at two apiece in these contests). Before you approach the window, be well aware of Dallas’ 8-22-1 ATS problems versus Central division opponents.

On the flip side is a Pistons’ crew who rebounded from an eight-game losing streak to knockdown a 6-3 SU record in the last nine and a 7-3 ATS stint in the last 10. Detroit has been miserable against teams with a winning record, going 16-15 ATS this season (4-8 ATS at home and 12-7 ATS on the road). And when installed from one to 5 ½-point underdogs this season, the Pistons are 6-8 ATS. Detroit enters this contest with a 4-0 ATS record in the last four games following a SU loss and are 5-1 ATS in its last six games versus a team with a winning SU record. In head-to-head action, the favorite has been on the financial upside by garnering a 5-2 ATS record in the last seven meetings. The ‘under’ is 4-1 in the last five head-to-head get-togethers. The Pistons are coming off a disappointing, 89-84 loss against Memphis on Sunday (losing ATS as 8 ½-point favorites).

Philadelphia at L.A. Lakers – 10:30 p.m. EST

The last game of the evening will have the Lakers (53-13 SU, 34-32 ATS) searching for their sixth win in the last seven games. However, a ‘W’ against Dallas on Sunday signaled L.A.’s fifth ATS defeat in the last eight contests. The Lake Show is 9-5 ATS this season versus teams playing above .500, are 12-6 ATS when installed between one and 7 ½-point favorites (stay tuned for the latest odds in all of Tuesday’s contests) but are just 12-21 ATS off one-day of rest. L.A. last faced off against the 76ers on Dec. 3, beating down their Eastern Conference opponent, 114-102. Rewarding backers as nine-point favorites in that contest, the Lakers have been able to put together three straight victories SU and ATS and are 5-1 SU and ATS in the last six games. The home team is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 head-to-head meetings.

Philly (33-31 SU, 29-33-2 ATS) is in the midst of a three-game winning streak, outscoring Miami, Chicago and Toronto by an average of 101.3 to 94.7 PPG. The 76ers have struggled against the Western Conference, scoring a 12-12 SU and 11-13 ATS record despite outscoring teams by 1.7 PPG. Philadelphia has accomplished some success versus the Pacific division as a 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS record demonstrate. And a 17-13-2 ATS stint off one-day of rest is something to think about. Philadelphia is 7-5 SU and 6-6 ATS in its last 12 home games (6-5-1 on the ‘under). The ‘Sixers are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games while an 0-5 ATS fall in the last five games against the Western Conference has been a problem for those supporting the team in this spot.

Hot and Cold Bets - Week 20
By Matt Fargo

The NBA regular season is winding down fast and the games are becoming that much more important. Matt Fargo has been looking into Hot and Cold NBA bets throughout the season and he takes a look at four games that you will want to pay attention to coming up over the next few days.

NBA Hot Bets

Tuesday – Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers 7:00 PM ET

We get a marquee matchup on Tuesday and Cleveland can pretty much shut the door on Orlando here. The Magic trail the Cavaliers by four games in the Eastern Conference standings and a loss here will pretty much end their chances of the top seed in the playoffs. Orlando has been playing well with seven wins in its last eight games but the road has not been as kind of late as it is just 6-5 in its last 11 road games (6-5 ATS). It heads to the toughest place in the NBA for visiting teams this season as Cleveland is 29-1 at home this season (22-8 ATS) with the lone loss coming against the Lakers. The Cavaliers will be playing with some revenge as well as it lost in Orlando in the first meeting in January by 11 points. The Magic have been great this season as an underdog (11-2 ATS) and following a loss (12-5 ATS) but they have not played in a venue this difficult in those situations.

Wednesday – Sacramento Kings at Charlotte Bobcats 9:00 PM ET

Charlotte may be considered “cold” right now but this is the time to ride. The Bobcats have lost three straight games heading into Monday’s game against Toronto. A win there will get the Bobcats going again and the schedule sets up for a possible run as the next five games are all against teams that will not be making the playoffs this season. Charlotte had won a season and franchise high six games and it is still in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race, trailing Chicago and Milwaukee by only a game and a half for the final spot. Sacramento brings in a 4-29 road record (19-14 ATS) and it has yet to win a game against the Eastern Conference, going 0-26 on the season (8-18 ATS). This will be the third game in four nights as well as the second of a back-to-back set where the Kings are just 3-15 on the year (9-9 ATS). Charlotte won the first meeting this year by seven points in Sacramento and this one should end up a double-digit win.

NBA Cold Bets

Wednesday – Detroit Pistons at Houston Rockets 8:30 PM ET

The Pistons seemed to have picked up some steam as they won four straight games including big victories over Boston and Orlando. However, they have gone just 2-3 since then with one of those wins coming in overtime and two losses coming against the lowly Knicks and Grizzlies. Detroit has been better on the road this season with a 16-15 record (17-14 ATS) but it has struggled against the Western Conference, going 12-14 (11-15 ATS) and this includes a loss to Houston at home in the first meeting. The Pistons will be playing their second game in two nights and they are just 3-8 this season with no rest (4-7 ATS) including a 1-5 record (2-3 ATS) when the first of the two games was on the road. Houston has been up and down and even though it has dropped two straight at home, those losses came against the Spurs and Lakers. The Rockets are 27-8 at home this year (15-19-1 ATS) and while that spread record is not good, they make up for it with a 16-12 record against the Eastern Conference (15-12-1 ATS).

Thursday – Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks 7:00 PM ET

Dallas was playing really well, going 15-6 through 21 games before losing back-to-back road games against the Lakers and Warriors. The road has not been kind of late, as the Mavericks are just 2-7 in their last nine roadies (3-6 ATS) to drop them under .500 away from home with a 16-19 mark. Dallas has done well against the Eastern Conference, going 18-7 but it is just 13-12 ATS and the Hawks will be looking for some payback following a tough two-point setback in Dallas back in December. Atlanta is 25-7 at home (19-13 ATS) and it has reeled off victories in five of the first seven games of this homestand. The Hawks have Sacramento on Tuesday before this game so they should be going for the homestand sweep here. Victories have been contagious as they are 23-15 following a win (23-14-1 ATS). Atlanta is 2.5 games ahead of Miami for the 4th spot in the Eastern Conference and with a schedule that features Cleveland, San Antonio, Boston twice, Los Angeles and Orlando in the next 16 days, these are the games that need to be won.

Game of the Day: Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers
By The Prez

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers (-6, 194)

Season series

These two have met just once this season, a 99-88 Magic win in Orlando on Jan. 29. Dwight Howard had his usual double-double with 22 points and 18 boards despite being double and triple-teamed all night. The Magic attempted a whopping 31 shots from downtown.

Cleveland's LeBron James had 23 points, but shot just 10-for-27 from the field in that first meeting. James had just six free-throw attempts on the night; the Cavs were complaining about the calls all night to the refs and got two technical fouls for good measure. Coach Mike Brown was ejected from the game and Cleveland played without injured starters Delonte West and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Both Orlando and Cleveland enter off wins on Sunday. The Magic, who have won three games in a row (3-0 ATS), thumped the Jazz by 18 in Orlando behind the seventh 20-20 game this season by Howard. Hedo Turkoglu returned after missing two games with an injury.

The Cavs, winners of five straight (2-3 ATS), beat the Knicks by five in Cleveland on a night the Cavs quietly raised the Central Division championship banner.

“We have bigger goals,” James said for the reason for no type of ceremony.

Guard Delonte West returned to Cleveland's starting lineup after missing one game with a bruised back. The Cavs ended New York's 26-game streak of scoring at least 100 points.

Race for first

With just three scheduled meetings this season, the Magic can clinch a head-to-head tiebreaker against Cleveland with a win Tuesday night. But Cleveland has lost just once at home (23-7 ATS, beating opponents by an average of more than 15 points) and that was to the Lakers. The Cavs close the season with 11 of their final 16 at home, but 10 of those contest are against teams with winning records.

The Magic enter this one four games behind Cleveland for the top spot in the East but just a half-game behind Boston for No. 2. Orlando, which has at least one win over every current division leader in the NBA, has 16 games left this year, with 10 of those coming against teams with losing records. The Magic have the East's best road record.

A few trends

The Cavs have lost three straight to the Magic overall, three straight in Cleveland and seven of nine to Orlando, which is 8-1 ATS in those nine matchups.

Orlando is 10-3 since Rafer Alston has moved into the starting lineup.

The Cavaliers are 9-1 since losing Ben Wallace to a broken leg.

James was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 34.0 points, 10.8 assists, 8.8 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 2.8 steals per game as Cleveland won all four games last week. James has now won the award 19 times in his career, including a career-best six times this season.

The Cavs are good at coming from behind, tied with the Lakers, Celtics and Nets for the most victories (10) after trailing for three quarters. They’re also an NBA-best 43-2 when leading after three quarters – including 26-0 at home.

Tips and Trends

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers

Magic: Dwight Howard's name has been lost in the shuffle of NBA MVP talk this season despite his dominant play in the paint for Orlando this season. Howard totaled 28 points and 20 rebounds in a 105-87 rout of Utah on Sunday, prompting Jazz forward Carlos Boozer to call him an MVP candidate. Howard's coach agreed. “His effort lately, has been very, very good,” Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. “He’s coming out and playing with great energy and intensity. When he does that, it sets the tone.”

Magic are 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - PG Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 96 (Side Play of the Day)

Cavs (-6, O/U 194): Cleveland has lost just once at home this season, and that came against the defending Western Conference champion Lakers. The Cavs will be facing the top road team in the East though in the Magic, who have won the last three meetings overall as well as the last three trips to Cleveland. “They’re a very good road team, we’re a very good home team,” Cavs star LeBron James said. “We’re looking forward to the challenge and I bet those guys are looking forward to the challenge also. We know how good of a team we are at home. We take it personal and want to win every game on our home court.”

Cavs are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. Southeast Division.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Cleveland's last 8 home games.

Key Injuries - C Ben Wallace (leg) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 98
