Tuesday's Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards

**Hawks at Raptors**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Atlanta (43-34 straight up, 41-35-1 against the spread) as a one-point favorite with a total of 198. As of Monday night, most books had the Hawks as one-point ‘chalk’ with the total bumped down to 197.

--Toronto (30-46 SU, 30-44-1 ATS) has caught fire recently, winning six of its last seven games both SU and ATS. The Raptors saw their six-game winning streak snapped Sunday in a 112-103 loss to the Knicks as 5 ½-point home favorites. Chris Bosh had 31 points and 14 rebounds in the losing effort.

--Mike Woodson’s team is currently in the No. 4 spot of the Eastern Conference standings. With five games left, the Hawks own a two-game advantage over the Miami Heat for this all-important slot that provides home-court advantage in a first-round playoff series.

--Atlanta has lost three straight games, five of its last six and six of its last eight. The Hawks dropped an 88-82 decision to Orlando at home Saturday as 1 ½-point underdogs. Josh Smith had 19 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.

--Atlanta is 14-24 SU and 19-19 ATS on the road this season. The Hawks have lost five consecutive road games, going 1-4 ATS during that stretch.

--Toronto has already been eliminated from playoff contention. The Raptors are 17-21 SU and 15-22-1 ATS at home this year.

--Joe Johnson is the catalyst for the Hawks, leading the team in scoring with a 21.3 points per game average. The Arkansas product also averages 5.9 assists and 4.4 rebonds per contest.

--Bosh is the Raptors’ franchise player, averaging 22.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He has posted double-doubles in seven straight games.

--Atlanta forward Marvin Williams (14.0 PPG, 6.4 RPG) remains out with a back injury. The team is hoping Williams might be able to return for the playoffs. Acie Law (back) is “questionable” at Toronto.

--These Eastern Conference rivals have already met three times this season with the home team prevailing in each spot. However, the Hawks covered the number in a 93-88 loss at Toronto on Nov. 28 as six-point underdogs. Likewise, the Raptors took the cash in an 87-84 loss at Atlanta as 7 ½-point ‘dogs on Jan. 19. In the first encounter back on Nov. 7, Atlanta cruised to a 110-92 victory as a two-point home ‘chalk.’ The ‘under’ has cashed in two of the three head-to-head meetings.

--Toronto has seen the ‘over’ go 44-32 overall, 20-18 in its home assignments. Meanwhile, the ‘under’ is 40-35-2 overall for the Hawks, 18-18-2 in their road games.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Eastern.

**Hornets at Heat**

--LVSC opened Miami (41-36 SU, 37-38-2 ATS) as a two-point favorite with a total of 188 ½. As of Monday night, most spots had the Heat as four-point ‘chalk’ with the total adjusted to 190.

--As previously mentioned, Miami is trying to catch Atlanta for home-court advantage in a first-round series. In addition, the Heat is just one-half game in front of Philadelphia for the fifth slot. Therefore, this is a crucial game for D-Wade and Co. because they certainly don’t want to play Orlando or Boston (who are battling for the No. 2 and 3 slots in the East) in the first round.

--New Orleans (47-29 SU, 32-42-2 ATS) is currently holding the sixth spot in the West, one-half game ahead of Utah and one game behind fifth-place Portland. The Hornets are also within reach of the fourth spot (and home-court advantage), 1 ½ games back of Houston, not to mention two games behind the Spurs for the No. 3 seed.

--Miami has won back-to-back games, including Saturday’s 118-104 win at Washington as a 1 ½-point road ‘chalk.’

--Miami has posted a 26-12 SU record and an 18-19-1 ATS ledger at home this season. Meanwhile, the Hornets are 20-17 SU and 14-22-1 ATS on the road.

--The ‘under’ is on a 10-3 run for the Hornets. They have watched the ‘under’ go 42-32-2 overall, 18-17-2 in their road games.

--The ‘under’ is 38-37-2 overall for the Heat, 19-18-1 in their home outings.

--New Orleans guard/forward James Posey and center Tyson Chandler are both “out.” Miami power forward Udonis Haslem (thumb) is also “out.”

--New Orleans is 6-0-1 ATS in its last seven games against the Heat. The ‘over’ is 6-2 in the last eight head-to-head meetings even though the ‘under’ has cashed in the last two encounters.

NBA Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, April 7

Orlando at Houston (8:30 p.m. EDT). The Magic are a half-game behind the Celtics for the second spot in the Eastern Conference, while the Rockets are a half-game ahead of Portland for fourth in the West.

HALL-OF-FAMERS

Michael Jordan was elected to the Hall of Fame class of 2009 on Monday, set for induction in September with his Dream Team teammates David Robinson and John Stockton. Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and Rutgers women’s coach C. Vivian Stringer are also part of the class that will be inducted Sept. 10-12 in Springfield, Mass., home of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

NO MANU

Manu Ginobili will miss the rest of the season and playoffs for San Antonio after tests Monday revealed that his troubled right ankle has gotten worse. Ginobili sat out the fourth quarter in Sunday’s blowout loss at Cleveland, and his absence leaves the Spurs limping toward the postseason in search of a fifth NBA title since 1999. Ginobili missed 19 games after the All-Star break to heal a stress reaction in his right distal fibula. He returned March 25, but tests showed the stubborn injury is now a fracture. The Spurs said Ginobili wasn’t expected to need surgery.

SUSPENDED

The Los Angeles Clippers suspended forward Zach Randolph for two games on Monday after he was arrested for investigation of drunken driving following the team’s 88-85 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Two California Highway Patrol officers saw a white Rolls Royce weaving on Interstate 405 around 2:25 a.m., Officer Tony Garrett said. The officers pulled the car over and identified Randolph as the driver. Garrett said alcohol could be smelled inside the car. After conducting a field sobriety test, the officers arrested Randolph and took him to the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles.

STATUS

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo left practice after turning his ankle, but coach Doc Rivers said it did not appear that the injury was serious. Rondo was seen limping off the floor Monday at the team’s practice facility. Rondo has sprained his right ankle twice previously this season but has only missed two games. Rivers said he did not know which ankle Rondo injured. … Meanwhile, Rivers said Kevin Garnett was making improvement as he rehabs his sprained right knee, and could return April 14 at Philadelphia.

SIGNED

The New York Knicks have signed guard Joe Crawford through the remainder of the season. The 6-foot-5 Crawford has been with the Knicks on a 10-day contract and has yet to appear in a game. The rookie played 43 games for the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA’s Development League before joining New York on March 27.

SPEAKING

“I don’t like being up here for the Hall of Fame because at that time your basketball career is completely over. I was hoping this day would be 20 more years, or actually go in when I’m dead and gone.”—Michael Jordan, after learning about his selection for the 2009 Hall of Fame induction class on Monday.

Game of the day: Magic at Rockets
By The Prez

Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets (-1, 189.5)

Season series

The Rockets were a thorn in Orlando’s side in the first meeting this year and have been over the past few years. Houston’s Yao Ming outplayed a foul-prone Dwight Howard in a 100-95 Rockets win in Orlando on Nov. 22, one of just eight Magic home losses this season.

Houston did get a combined 45 points in that game from Tracy McGrady, Rafer Alston and Carl Landry. None of the three will be on the court for Houston on Tuesday. McGrady is of course out for the year, Landry hasn’t played since getting shot a few weeks ago (although he might by Friday) and Alston is now a member of the Magic.

The Magic had Jameer Nelson in that first game, and he’s done for the season, but didn’t have Hedo Turkoglu.

The Rockets have won seven in a row in this series and covered in 11 of the past 13 meetings, although the road team has covered six of the past seven in the series overall.

How they enter

While both teams have clinched playoff berths, both have plenty to play for.

Houston beat Portland on 102-88 on Sunday behind 30 fourth-quarter points, the Rockets’ most in that quarter since March 6. The Rockets outscored their opponents in the fourth quarter just four times over their last 14 games.

The win gave Houston the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Blazers, although the Rockets are still in the race for the Southwest Division title.

“We have to keep it going against Orlando and when we play other teams down the stretch, we have to keep it going,” Houston’s Von Wafer said.

As for Orlando, it had an impressive weekend, beating Cleveland by 29 on Friday (improving Orlando to 17-2 following a loss) and winning at Atlanta on Saturday. The bench was strong in both games, with 40 points on Friday and winning the battle of reserves by five points Saturday thanks to 11 from J.J. Redick.

Mickael Pietrus did play Friday and is questionable for tonight's game. He has missed 27 games this season.

The Magic probably have the most to gain if Boston’s Kevin Garnett can’t play again in the regular season. Orlando is just a half-game behind the Celtics for the No. 2 spot in the East.

After this game, the Magic will be favored (barring injury, etc.) in their five remaining matchups because they won't face another team with a winning record.

A few numbers

A win Tuesday would be the Magic’s 58th this season, becoming the second winningest team in franchise history. The 1996-97 club finished 60-22. Also by beating the Rockets, the Magic will improve their road record to 28-11, passing last season's franchise-best road record of 27 wins.

Howard has had an NBA-high nine 20-20 (points rebounds)games this season.

The Magic are 18-5 since acquiring Alston, and the former Rocket credits the injured Nelson, who remains around the team on a daily basis.

"He's actually helped me have a full grasp of the plays and certain sets, where to expect certain guys to be," Alston said.

The Rockets are 31-8 at home, which equals the best single-season win total at Toyota Center (31-10 in 2007-08).

Orlando has covered five of its past six road games, while Houston has covered three straight at home.

Tips and Trends

Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets

Magic (-1, O/U 188.5): Orlando's Dwight Howard wasn't happy following an 88-82 victory at Atlanta on Sunday. His team shot just 38 percent from the field and remains a half-game behind Boston for the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference. “We didn’t play with good enough energy like we needed to, so we really had to grind it out,” Howard said. “We weren’t focused at the beginning of the game. I talked to my guys and told them we’ve got to kick it up. We’re playing for something right now.”

Magic are 2-11 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Orlando's last 11 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Mickael Pietrus (knee) is questionable.
G Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 93 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Rockets: Howard has struggled in nine career meetings with Houston, averaging just 12.8 points on 45.9 percent shooting and 10.4 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Houston's Yao Ming has averaged 24 points on 55.6 percent shooting and 9.8 rebounds vs. Howard. The Rockets are still trying to clinch home-court advantage in the first round. “We play as hard as any team in the league,” Rockets head coach Rick Adelman said. “We for the most part defend, but it’s our concentration during parts of the game that lacks, and you can’t afford to do that. I know we have young guys in a lot of spots, but that’s something that we have to continue to get better (at) in the last five games.”

Rockets are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 games vs. Southeast Division.
The OVER is 3-1 in Houston's last 4 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Carl Landry (calf) is OUT.
F Tracy McGrady (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 92
