Wednesday's NBA Preview
By Josh Jacobs

It’s like beating a dead horse but the fact of the matter is Super Bowl XLIII is what’s taking control in the gambling world leading up to Sunday. But as my colleague Chris David explained in his most recent tip sheet, “If you’re reading this column… it’s probably safe to say that you wager on hoops everyday.”

A major trend to sweep through the league on Monday was near perfect 6-1 mark on the 'under'. Tuesday night's games will help us determine what's to come on Wednesday.

ESPN will broadcast a solo tip-off between Golden State (14-31 straight up, 20-24-1 against the spread) and Dallas (25-19 SU, 19-25 ATS) to begin the evening.

The Mavericks are coming off a four-game road stint for which they went 2-2 SU and ATS. But they shouldn’t rest just yet as the home contest on Wednesday is short lived. A two-game trip to Miami and Orlando will roll right into the beginning of February.

Sticking with the contest at hand, Dallas has surrendered 109.1 PPG in its last nine (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS). This lack of defense has pushed the club down the rankings at 16th, allowing a seasonal 99.4 PPG. The trend to emerge from allowing so many points is an ‘over’ record at 5-1 in the last six. Included was a Sunday, 124-100 loss in Boston which had the Mavs shooting just 42 percent from the field.

On the opposing bench, the Warriors have worked for a 4-3 record in their last seven after falling in five straight. But a 9-25 stretch in the last 34 can be overshadowed by a 7-3 ATS sprint in the last 10. Golden State has won four of the last five ATS games in large part to shooting 49.6 percent from the wood. Its last SU and ATS win over the Clippers came as a 10 ½-point favorite. Led by Corey Maggette (20 points, six rebounds), the Warriors drained 47 percent of its shots from beyond the arc, capturing the victory by the score of 107-92.

Golden state has coughed up 118.2 PPG in its last six losses versus giving up 105.3 PPG in the last four wins. The Warriors will now look ahead to three tough road games after finishing up a seven-game home stand. Golden State is 1-10 SU and 2-8-1 in its last 11 road games and is a disappointing 4-8 ATS away from home against teams playing over .500.

While Dallas is 3-1 in the last four head-to-head matches, the Warriors are a standout, 22-6-1 ATS in the last 29 head-to-head tip-offs.

Nuggets at Hornets – 8:00 p.m. EST

It’s been a roller coaster ride playing New Orleans (27-14 SU, 18-21-2 ATS) against the spread. For starters, the Hornets may be 4-1 in their last five but a 5-5 ATS record in the last 10 provides enough evidence of their unpredictability in returning money. Three of the five ATS losses have resulted as being the underdog on the board in road games. In-fact when books have installed New Orleans as the ‘dog this season, the team has gone 2-8 ATS.

Supporting the fade play on the Hornets is Denver’s (29-15 SU, 25-18-1 ATS) three-game ATS winning streak for which the team has outscored its opponents, 117-103.7 PPG. This offensive dominance has resulted in an 11-4 SU and 9-6 ATS run in the last 15, all aided by the Nuggets finding the hoop for 114.5 PPG. If you’re a totals player then a 10-5 ‘over’ record through the same 15 games is pertinent evidence that books will continue to tinker with total figures (the last two games have seen totals of 214 ½ and 220 ½-points respectively).

The road team is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 head-to-head meetings between these two teams.

Philadelphia at Houston – 8:30 p.m. EST

The 76ers (21-22 SU, 21-22 ATS) are coming off a loss in New Orleans (101-86), resulting in their third straight ATS loss in a row. A 4-6 ATS slide in the last 10 road games has backers sitting on the sidelines in the hopes that a positive trend tips the scales in their favor. At least a 7-3 record on the ‘over’ in those same 10 has produced an avenue for bettors to hop on. Philly is also coming off a seven-game winning streak which ended with a loss in Dallas (95-93) on Jan. 19. And there’s no overlooking the 8-3 ATS record in the last 10 (eight of them crafted in a row).

The Rockets (28-18 SU, 21-25 ATS) are best described as damaged good (nothing new for this club). Just as Tracy McGrady and Ron Artest come back from injury, Yao Ming departs with an ailing knee. A good indication of the rough goings in Houston include averaging 20.2 assists per game this season, 22nd worst in the league. The Rockets will be coming back home after playing eight of 13 games on the road (3-5 SU and ATS during the road trip). In its last 14 home games, Houston has put the injury bug behind it, working for a 12-2 SU record. But a 7-7 ATS stint doesn’t warrant heavy support from your bank account.

The team hopes that Ming will return to the lineup on Wednesday.

The ‘Sixers dispatched of the Rockets on Jan. 6, 104-96. Philly didn’t need the three-points to cover the spread. The ‘over’ is 6-0 in the last six head-to-head meetings.

Charlotte at Portland – 10:00 p.m. EST

A 5-13 road record is no way to open analysis on a team which you might be thinking to back. But if we dig just a little deeper we’ll notice that Charlotte (18-26 SU, 26-18 ATS) is 6-1 ATS in its last seven (ending the six-game ATS streak in a 98-93 loss in Indiana). Then again, four of those six ATS victories came from playing at home. Most books have opened the Bobcats as 9 ½-point visiting ‘dogs with a total set at 180 ½. From nine to 14-plus underdogs, Charlotte is just 2-3 ATS this season. On the road versus teams with a winning record, Charlotte has been the play at 5-2 ATS.

Portland (27-17 SU, 21-22 ATS) will attempt to take its eighth win in the last 11 home games in its 11th game installed as the favorite. The Trailblazers are 6-4 ATS in their last 10. Individually, Greg Oden has created a groove for himself, scoring 17 PPG with 10.8 RPG in the last four (3-1 SU and ATS in those four). When Oden has surpassed scoring double-digit figures in the last nine, Portland has gone 7-2 SU and 6-3 ATS. The ‘Blazers have also stepped up their production on defense, allowing 91 PPG in the last four games.

This is a revenge game for Portland which took an overtime ‘L’ against the Bobcats (102-97) on Jan. 17.

Atlanta (26-18, 23-21 ATS) at New York (19-25, 25-19 ATS)

The Hawks look to rebound from Monday’s ugly loss at Miami when they head up the eastern seaboard for an Eastern Conference clash with the surging Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

One day after falling 104-99 to Phoenix as a four-point home chalk, Atlanta went to Miami and got drilled 95-79 as a three-point underdog, the first time this season the Hawks scored fewer than 83 points. Although it preceded these two losses with a three-game winning streak, Atlanta is just 5-8 SU and 4-9 ATS in its last 13 games, including 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS on the road.

New York is coming off Monday’s 104-98 victory over the Rockets as a 1½-point home underdog, improving to 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS in its last five games, including 4-0 SU and ATS at home. During this five-game run, the Knicks are averaging 107.6 ppg (47 percent shooting) and giving up 101.8 ppg (44.1 percent).

The Knicks are 13-9 SU and ATS at home, with the SU winner cashing in 20 of those 22 contests. Meanwhile, the Hawks are 9-13 (13-9 ATS) as a visitor.

Atlanta is riding a five-game winning streak against the Knicks, but New York is 5-2 ATS in the last seven clashes. In this year’s lone previous meeting, the Hawks prevailed 98-95, but the Knicks easily got the money as a 10-point underdog. The pup is 4-2 ATS in the last six battles, with the visitor grabbing the cash in each of those six contests.

The Hawks are 4-1 ATS in their last five on Wednesday, but otherwise they carry negative pointspread trends of 4-9 overall, 2-6 against the Eastern Conference, 1-4 against the Atlantic Division, 1-4 when playing on one day of rest and 1-4 after a double-digit defeat. In addition to cashing in five straight overall and four straight at home, New York is on ATS runs of 4-0 when playing on one day of rest and 5-1 against the Southeast Division.

In this rivalry, the over is on streaks of 11-5 overall and 5-2 when playing at the Garden. Also, the over is on runs of 5-2 for Atlanta against the Eastern Conference and 20-6 for New York on Wednesday. Conversely, though, the under is on stretches of 9-4-1 for the Hawks on the road, 11-4 for the Hawks when playing on one day of rest, 5-1 for the Hawks against the Atlantic Division, 20-8 for the Knicks overall, 4-1 for the Knicks at the Garden, 12-4 for the Knicks against the East and 10-2 for the Knicks when playing on one day of rest.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NEW YORK

Denver (30-15, 26-18-1 ATS) at New Orleans (27-14, 18-21-2 ATS)

Two of the top teams in the Western Conference get together for the third time this season and the first time in the Big Easy as the Hornets host the streaking Nuggets.

New Orleans improved to 4-1 in its last five games (3-2 ATS) with Monday’s 101-86 victory over the 76ers as a three-point home favorite, as All-Star point guard Chris Paul (27 points, 10 rebounds, 15 assists) recorded his league-leading fifth triple-double of the season and came within three steals of a quadruple-double. The Hornets have scored more than 100 points in four straight games (103.5 ppg) after accomplishing the feat just five times in hits pervious 22 contests.

Denver’s brief two-game road trip began with last night’s 100-85 victory at Memphis, easily cashing as a 6½-point road favorite. The Nuggets have won three in a row and are 10-3 in their last 13. Also, they’re on an 8-3 ATS roll, including four straight spread-covers. George Karl’s team has scored at least 105 points in 11 of its last 15 games, topping 110 points eight times during this stretch, including in the last three games in a row.

While the Hornets are 15-5 at home, they’re just 9-10-1 ATS. With last night’s win at Memphis, the Nuggets are 12-9 SU and ATS on the highway, including 4-5 SU and ATS in the last nine.

The teams split their first two meetings this season, both in Denver and both by nearly identical scores. The Hornets took the first clash 105-101 as a one-point favorite on Feb. 27 and the Nuggets got revenge with a 105-100 win as a four-point chalk on Jan. 3. That latter triumph by Denver ended New Orleans’ 4-0 ATS run in this rivalry. The visitor has cashed in 10 of the last 14 series battles.

The Nuggets are on ATS streaks of 4-0 overall, 4-0 against the Western Conference and 13-5 against the Southwest Division. New Orleans is on pointspread runs of 37-16-1 on Wednesday, 13-3 at home against squads with a winning road record and 10-3 as a favorite of less than six points, but the Hornets have failed to cash in four of their past five against the Northwest Division.

The over is on streaks of 5-1 for Denver on the road, 4-0 for Denver on Wednesday, 6-2 for Denver against the Southwest Division, 8-2 for Denver against winning teams, 6-0 for the Hornets versus the Western Conference, 5-2 for the Hornets versus the Northwest Division, 7-3 for the Hornets against winning teams and 6-1 for the Hornets on Wednesday. However, the under is on runs of 6-2 for the Nuggets overall, 8-2 for New Orleans at home and 18-7 for New Orleans when playing on one day of rest.

Finally, the over is 3-0 in the last three meetings in this rivalry and 3-1 in the last four clashes in New Orleans.

ATS ADVANTAGE: DENVER and OVER

Philadelphia (21-22 SU and ATS) at Houston (28-18, 21-25 ATS)

The Rockets return home from a disappointing three-game Eastern Conference road swing, and awaiting them will be the 76ers, who are searching for their fourth consecutive upset win over Houston.

Houston dropped two of three on its trip, opening with a 107-102 loss at Indiana as a one-point favorite and concluding with Monday’s 104-98 setback at New York as a 1½-point chalk. In between, the Rockets knocked off Detroit 108-105 as a three-point underdog. Prior to the journey, Houston had won three in a row and six of its last seven, but Rick Adelman’s squad has alternated ATS wins and losses in its last 13 games.

Philadelphia has followed up a season-best seven-game winning streak by dropping two of its last three, including Monday’s 101-86 loss at New Orleans as a three-point road underdog. Also, the 76ers have failed to cover in three straight games after going 8-0 ATS in their previous eight. The SU winner is 39-4 ATS in Philly’s games this season.

The Rockets have won three in a row and five of six at the Toyota Center, but they’re just 3-6 ATS in their last nine at home. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s loss at New Orleans on Monday ended a three-game SU and a four-game ATS run on the highway.

The 76ers swept the season series from the Rockets last year, winning 100-88 as a 5½-point home underdog and 111-107 as a nine-point road pup. Then on Jan. 6, Philadelphia pulled off its third straight upset win over Houston, 104-96 as a three-point ‘dog, a victory that jumpstarted the Sixers’ recent eight-game winning streak. In this rivalry, the underdog is 14-3 in the last 17 meetings, including six outright upsets in the last eight, and the visitor has cashed in 12 of the last 16.

Philadelphia is on ATS runs of 8-3 overall, 4-1 on the road, 6-1 as an underdog, 4-0 on Wednesday, 10-3 against the Southwest Division and 5-1 after a double-digit defeat. Houston’s pointspread streaks including 4-1 after an outright loss and 6-0 after a non-cover, but the Rockets are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 as a favorite, 2-6 ATS in their last eight when playing on one day of rest and 1-7 ATS in their last eight against losing teams.

The last six meetings in this rivalry have gone over the total. Also, the over is 8-3 in the Sixers’ last 11 road games, 7-0 in their last seven after a SU defeat, 5-1 in their last six after a non-cover, 6-0 in their last six against winning teams and 11-5 in their last 16 on Wednesday. Houston has topped the total in six straight games after a defeat, but the under is 11-2 in its last 13 on Wednesday, 5-1 in its last six against the Eastern Conference and 4-1 in its last five versus the Atlantic Division.

Wednesday Research
By Indiancowboy

Toronto vs. NJ

These two teams despise each other. The series this year has gone like this:

12/15/08 TOR 87 - NJ 94 (NJ wins on the road Outright).
12/12/08 NJ 79 - TOR 101 (Toronto wins on the road Outright).
11/21/08 TOR 127 - NJ 129 (OT) (NJ wins on the road Outright).

Well, there seems to be a pattern here. The team with the revenge - which conveniently ends up being the team on the road, has won outright. Such is the case here with the Raptors with that revenge today. Toronto comes off a big win over Sacramento at home, they are playing great basketball, they have that revenge over Jersey today. It does worry me a bit that Jersey comes off a revenge of a loss of their own, but, 1-6 SU over their last 7 and 2-5 ATS during that stretch as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see the trend continue as Toronto gets their revenge today.

Sacramento vs. Boston

16 points - is that all? lol. Sacramento folks is not a bad team - when healthy. When they have Kevin Martin, this team has defeated the likes of GS on the road (which not even Boston, the Haws could do and the Cavs nearly lost and was the first game back with Ellis). Sacramento also defeated Dallas at home and recently lost by 7 to the Cavs. But, why would one wager against the Celtics? This is the same team that beat Dallas by 24, Phoenix by 17, Miami by 15 (which not even Orlando could win SU there) and Orlando by 10 on the road. The Celtics seem to be on a mission here and have covered 6 in a row. I want nothing to do with this game.

Washington vs. Miami

Miami is 24-19 on the year and they will make the playoffs this year it seems. After all, with the Bucks losing Redd, it seems even more likely they make the playoffs this year. The Bulls have an opening, let's see if they take it - but that is for another analysis. Miami has beaten Washington twice this year so Wash will get up for this game. Washington first loss by 20 on the road ad then 7 at home earlier this season. Miami comes off defeating the Magic and the Hawks and over 60% of the public likes them here - but again, Wash does have double-revenge and come off an ugly 16 point loss at home so they will look to bounce-back here. no thanks.

OKC vs. Memphis

Look, I understand tha OKC is laying 7 here, but keep in mind that they are 29-16 ATS. They come off a huge win over the Nets and they have been playing dominating basketball with their new coaching. Memphis beat this team by 6 points earlier this year so they do have revenge. How 60% of the public still wants to wager on a Memphis team that has lost their last 10 covers is beyond me.

You have an OKC team that has covered their last 7 of 9 and are 5-4 SU in fact. I can see OKC getting revenge as they are playing great basketball right now and Memphis simply continues to struggle.

Atlanta vs. New York

NY comes off a big win over Houston. The Hawks beat this team by 3 earlier this season at home. Keep in mind that NY was a 10 point underdog in that game. Hawks come off an ugly effort in Miami - but Miami did have revenge in that game. Of course, the Hawks are looking to bounce-back but the Knicks have revenge - just like the revenge they had against the Rockets when they got beat in Houston only to defeat them at home. Altanta typically does well on bounce-backs, they have lost 2 in a row however and I wouldn't be surprised to see NY take the cake once again as they have covered their last 5.

Detroit vs. Minnesota

I would love to take Minny here as they are the better team right now. But, the Pistons have to step up or will at least attempt to here. The Twolves are by far on the best ATS run in the league currently with the Cavs being the only exception. But, as for ATS runs over the last 15 games, without a doubt, there is no one that comes close to the Twolves. Also, remember, the Bucks had revenge against the Twolves as well at home and Minnesota got it done over them relatively easily as well. So, there you have it, you can take the Pistons with revenge, or the hot Twolves at home who are rolling right now.

Denver vs. New Orleans

Keep in mind that this is a revenge game for New Orleans. They lost on the road to Denver by a few points last time out 100-105. In fact, they were losing to the Sixers badly until they pulled it together and came back strong in the second half. Yes, New Orleans does have revenge, but once again, this team has no Tyson and West. Denver has covered their last 4 straight and 5 of 6. Tough to go either way imo.

Charlotte vs. Portland

These two teams have history as Charlotte beat this team in OT earlier at home and they come off a big Outright win over the Lakers (which I'm glad to have cashed in on as my POD yesterday). As per Portland, they come off a big win themselves at home over the Kings and I can see them looking to get revenge on Charlotte. But, bear in mind that Charlotte is not the same Charlotte team and not likely to lay over as they have covered a series of games and this game could be competitive. Either way, Portland does have revenge and Charlotte on a back to back, so I can respect that and stay away.

Philadelphia vs. Houston

Pick your poison. You have a Philly team that in all due honesty should have won at New Orleans if they didn't lose their bearings in the second half as the line was even set for an outright win for them. But, this team collapsed. They will look to bounce-back here but Houston too comes off a tough loss to NY on the road and are not in a good mood. Philly beat this team by 8 earlier this year so Houston will be ready for this game. I have no line on this game so it is tough to gauge the ATS standpoint, but either way, I don't want to go against either team that comes off a loss - or Houston that has revenge.

Dallas vs. Golden State

I wanted to take Dallas after that ugly loss to Boston on national television by 20+ points. But, GS has been playing well and remember, they have Ellis back in the lineup. Ellis, Jackson, Maggatte, Pietrus, Eze - with all these guys back, this team is deep and dynamic. Remember, their young guys that were getting minutes became seasoned with all these injuries such as C.J. Wilson and others. So, I can see this either way - in fact, although there is no line, if GS is getting considerable points here, they are a sound play which also likely leads this game to go over with my active dog/over theory.
