SCOREBOARD

Wednesday, Nov. 12

Atlanta at Boston (7:30 p.m. EST). The Hawks moved to 6-0 with Tuesday’s win over Chicago, improving their best start since opening 11-0 in the 1997-98 season.

STARS

Tuesday

— Stephen Jackson, Warriors, tied the game late in regulation and scored six of his 30 points in overtime, leading Golden State back from a poor fourth quarter to beat Minnesota 113-110.

— Allen Iverson, Pistons, had 30 points and nine assists to win for the first time with his new team, leading Detroit to a 100-92 victory over Sacramento.

— Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets, scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half to help Denver held off Charlotte 88-80.

— Tim Duncan, Spurs, had 23 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists to carry San Antonio to a 92-80 victory over New York in the Spurs’ first game without the injured Tony Parker.

— Al Horford, Hawks, had a career-high 27 points and 17 rebounds as Atlanta remained unbeaten through six games with a 113-108 victory over the Bulls.

MILESTONE

The Lakers’ 106-99 win over Dallas was the 1,400th career game for coach Phil Jackson, a milestone reached by only 12 other coaches. He is 982-418, the highest winning percentage in league history.

UNDER THE KNIFE

Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and could be out for three months. Hinrich was hurt last Friday night in Chicago’s 100-83 victory over Phoenix when he tried to knock the ball away from the Suns’ Amare Stoudemire.

STREAK SNAPPED

Bruce Bowen didn’t start in San Antonio’s game against the Knicks. It was the first time in 550 games with the Spurs in which he was on the active roster that he didn’t start. Bowen checked into the game with 2:22 left in the first quarter. He was replaced in the starting lineup at small forward by Ime Udoka.

SUBBING FOR A STAR

Spurs rookie George Hill started in place of injured Tony Parker and scored a season-high 12 points. Parker will miss about a month due to a moderate left ankle sprain. The Spurs’ other standout guard, Manu Ginobili, has not played this season and isn’t scheduled to be back from left ankle surgery until December.

BACK IN ACTION

Deron Williams had seven points and nine assists for Utah in a 93-70 win over the 76ers after missing the first six games because of a sprained left ankle he sustained in a preseason game Oct. 18 against Chicago. Williams averaged a double-double last season—18.8 points and 10.5 assists.

STAT

Golden State’s Andris Biedrins finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out in overtime of a 113-110 win over Minnesota, recording his 15th straight double-double dating to April.

KEEP WINNING

Atlanta beat Chicago 113-108 to improve to 6-0, the Hawks’ best start since the 1997-98 season when they won their first 11 games. … The Lakers held off the Mavericks 106-99 to improve to 6-0 for the first time since going 7-0 to open 2001-02, their last championship season.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES

Dallas scored a season-best 35 points in the first quarter and a season-best 60 in the first half, but couldn’t keep up the pace, scoring just 39 the rest of the way in a 106-99 loss to the Lakers.

SPEAKING

“You’ve got to be able to finish games and you’ve got to be able to win at home. We ran great in the first half. In the second half, they played better and we didn’t get the same opportunities.”—Dallas coach Rick Carlisle after the Mavericks scored just 39 points in the second half and lost to the Lakers 106-99 on Tuesday night.

Atlanta (6-0, 5-1 ATS) at Boston (7-1, 4-4 ATS)

The Hawks return to the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston for the first time since they got eliminated in the first round of last year’s playoffs, and they do so as one of the NBA’s two remaining unbeaten teams.

Atlanta scored 29 points in each of the last three quarters at Chicago last night and held off the Bulls 113-108 as a four-point road underdog, with all five starters scoring in double figures, led by Al Horford’s 27 points. The Hawks are off to their best start since 1997-98, when they won their first 11 in a row, and they’re 4-0 on the road (3-1 ATS).

Boston rallied for its fifth straight victory on Monday, topping Toronto 94-87 but coming up just short as an 8½-point home chalk. The Celtics trailed 48-36 at the half before blowing out the Raptors 58-39 in the final 24 minutes, and they’re now 4-0 at home this season, but 1-3 ATS.

The Hawks took the top-seeded Celtics to the limit last May, but couldn’t secure what would’ve been the biggest upset in NBA playoff history, losing Game 7 in Boston 99-65 as a 14½-point road underdog. The home team went 7-0 SU and ATS in last year’s postseason clash, and including three regular-season meetings, the host went 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS in this rivalry a year ago.

Atlanta’s 5-1 ATS start has all come against the Eastern Conference, and the team is also 5-2 ATS in its last seven against Atlantic Division foes. Meanwhile, Boston has failed to cash in 12 of its last 17 against Eastern Conference opponents, but otherwise the C’s are on pointspread streaks of 11-4 overall, 8-3 on Wednesdays and 5-1 when playing one day of rest.

For the Hawks, the under is on streaks of 5-2 overall and 4-1 on the road, but the over is 9-4 in the team’s last 13 Wednesday games and 5-2 in its last seven against the Atlantic Division. The Celtics have stayed low in six of its eight games this year. Also, the first five meetings between these teams last year (playoffs included) stayed under the total, but the over was 4-1 in the last five postseason contests.

Finally, the under is 5-1 in the last six head-to-head battles in Beantown.

ATS ADVANTAGE: BOSTON

L.A. Lakers (6-0, 5-1 ATS) at New Orleans (4-2, 2-3-1 ATS)

Two of the top teams in the Western Conference hook up for the first time this season, as Kobe Bryant and the unbeaten Lakers visit the Big Easy for a battle with Chris Paul and the Hornets.

Los Angeles went to Dallas last night and rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat the Mavericks 106-99, barely cashing as a 5½-point road favorite as they outscored Dallas 30-20 in the final quarter. The Lakers have scored at least 104 points in five straight games and four of their six wins have been double-digit blowouts.

The Hornets have been idle since Saturday when they snapped a two-game losing skid with a 100-89 rout of Dwyane Wade and the Heat, pushing as an 11-point home favorite. New Orleans is averaging 105 ppg in its four victories, but only 84 ppg in its two defeats.

These squads split their four meetings last year, with each team winning once at home and once on the road. The Hornets cashed in three of those four games and they’re 5-2 ATS in the last seven clashes with Los Angeles. Also, the road team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven, the underdog is 7-0 ATS in the last seven and the SU winner has cashed in nine of the last 10 series battles.

In addition to starting the season on a 5-1 ATS tear, the Lakers are on pointspread runs of 23-10-1 on the road, 18-5-1 against the Western Conference, 5-1 against the Southwest Division and 6-2 when playing on back-to-back nights. New Orleans is also in the midst of several positive ATS runs, including 25-9-1 at home, 21-6 against the Pacific Division and 35-16-1 on Wednesdays.

The under is 7-3 in the Lakers’ last 10 against the Western Conference, 5-2 in their last seven against the Southwest Division, 2-1 on the road this year and 4-1 in the Hornets’ last five at home. However, the over is 10-4 in New Orleans’ last 14 games on Wednesday, 12-4 in the last 16 series meetings between these squads and 6-2 in the last series meetings in the Big Easy.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

Houston (4-3, 2-5 ATS) at Phoenix (6-2, 5-3 ATS)

The Suns, who are off to a strong start under first-year coach Terry Porter, gun for their third straight victory when they host the Rockets at the US Airways Center.

Phoenix returned home from a four-game, five-day road trip on Sunday and outlasted the Grizzlies 107-102, but never threatened to cover as an 11½-point home chalk. It marked the first time all season that the SU winner failed to cover a pointspread in a Suns game. Phoenix has scored at least 103 points in all six of its victories, while averaging 89 points in its two defeats.

Houston started the season with three straight double-digit victories but has lost three of its last four. That includes Sunday’s embarrassing 111-82 loss at the Lakers as a seven-point road underdog, as the Rockets fell to 2-6 ATS since the end of last season (1-4 ATS in the last five). Houston has scored in triple digits just once in its last 16 games dating to the end of last year’s regular season.

These teams have alternated wins and losses in their last six meetings, with the home team going 4-2 SU during this stretch. However, going back to the 2005-06 season, the Suns are 9-2 ATS against the Rockets (4-1 ATS at home), and the favorite has cashed in seven of the last 10 series meetings. Lastly, going back several years, the visitor is 20-9 ATS in this rivalry.

The Rockets are 2-5 ATS in their last seven against the Western Conference, but they had cashed in four straight versus the Pacific Division before Sunday’s loss to the Lakers. Meanwhile, the Suns are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a non-cover.

The over is 4-1 in Houston’s last five road games, 6-2 in Phoenix’s last six overall, 4-1 in Phoenix’s last five at home and 10-3 in Phoenix’s last 13 games on Wednesday. However, five of the last six Rockets-Suns battles in the desert have stayed low.

ATS ADVANTAGE: PHOENIX

Fargo's hot and cold NBA bets: Week 3
By MATT FARGO

NBA Hot Bets This Week

Wednesday – San Antonio Spurs at Milwaukee Bucks 8:05 p.m. ET

Heading into the season it would not have surprised many to see the Rockets and Hornets atop the Southwest after two weeks. But no one saw the Spurs sitting at 1-4 in last place.

The lone victory came in double overtime at Minnesota and if not for a Tony Parker jumper at the buzzer in the first overtime, San Antonio would be in the company of Washington and the Clippers as the only winless teams in the league.

Injuries are the big factor after Tony Parker has pulled up a chair next to Manu Ginobili on the sidelines with a sprained ankle. Parker will be out four weeks.

The Spurs look to bounce back Tuesday at home against the Knicks and then Wednesday at Milwaukee.

Now could be the time to jump on San Antonio with the public falling off fast. Milwaukee has started just 1-2 at home including a 0-1 mark against the Western Conference (Suns). The Bucks went 8-22 against the Western Conference last season.

NBA Cold Bets This Week

Wednesday – Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors 7:05 p.m. ET

What is wrong with the Sixers? The acquisition of Elton Brand was supposed to make Philadelphia a virtual lock for the playoffs and possibly present a small challenge to the Celtics in the Atlantic Division.

The Sixers have blown out the Knicks and Kings which is nothing special considering most average teams can manage that. They are 0-3 on the road and have lost those games by an average of 13.3 points.

Philadelphia was beaten at soundly at home by the Raptors already this season as a four-point chalk. Keep an eye on this team Tuesday and see how it fares against Utah because that will be the first game in five days for the Sixers.

Toronto started 3-0 before losing two straight against the Pistons and Hawks. A winnable game against Charlotte comes before a matchup with Boston on Monday and a win there could provide a huge spark.

Wednesday's NBA Preview
By Josh Jacobs

Time waits for no one. This refers to the speed at which the NBA season has already progressed. We’re now three-and-a-half weeks deep and some clubs are already etching an identity while others are still in the process of taking shape.

A quick look back at last week reveals that underdogs fared decently with a 24-24-2 against-the-spread record. In the Eastern Conference, Cleveland and Atlanta have come together for a 9-3 ATS record. Backers betting in the West can thank Denver, Oklahoma City and the L.A. Lakers for a combined 13-3 ATS performance.

Wednesday offers up a loaded 11-game card to sink our teeth into. On top of all the action from both coasts will be two ESPN televised contests beginning at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Atlanta at Boston – 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Hawks (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS) have yet to drop a game this season thanks to a scoring margin of 10.2 points and a defense allowing 85.8 points per game. The end result has been Atlanta covering all but one of its contests and a 4-1 record on the ‘under’. Despite all the positives, the Hawks pulled the trigger for 83 field goal attempts per game, sinking a middle of pack 44.3 percent of those shots.

Boston (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) walks into this mid-week matchup with a perfect 4-0 record at home. Installed as ‘dogs twice this season against Houston and Detroit (Nov. 4 and 9), the Celtics were able to cover and win outright in both contests.

The reoccurring theme for success has been Doc Rivers’ defensive unit. Boston has held opponents to 86.8 PPG and the effort was noticeable in Monday’s 94-87 win against Toronto. The Raptors were smothered into making just 42.9 percent of its field goals. On the season, the Celtics have put a hand in the face of opposing teams by allowing a league best, 38.2 percent from the field.

Boston is 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS when coming off one-day of rest.

With the anticipated defensive tussle in this contest, some offshore books opened the total at 179. Both clubs have combined to produce a 10-3 record on the ‘under’. The home team is 7-0 ATS in the last seven head-to-head meetings.

L.A. Lakers at New Orleans – 8:00 p.m. EDT

Strap your seat belts on for this wild ride as a highly anticipated game of hoops between the Lakers (5-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) and Hornets (4-2 SU, 2-3-1 ATS) continues the volatile evening. The Lakers only have two road games under their belt but both trips resulted in victories albeit against the L.A. Clippers (117-79) on Oct. 29 and Denver (104-97) on Nov. 1.

Some astronomical numbers we’re seeing from L.A. include a league leading point difference of 22.4. Also, the club has blown the bulbs out of the scoreboard by nailing 47 percent of its three-point shots, plus it helps to force an average of 18 turnovers per game.

A 111-82 win over Houston on Sunday was a microcosm of what’s been going on in Los Angles so far. The Lakers not only fired 53.2 percent from the field, but out rebounded the Rockets 50-36 was nothing short of amazing. In-fact averaging 51.4 rebounds per game (13.4 on offense) has resulted in a league best, 12.6 rebounding margin.

The Lake Show has covered their last four with books installing them as much as 13 ½-points favorites this season (against the Clippers last Wednesday). Remember that L.A. has had three games separated by three days of rest. This has resulted in a perfect 3-0 SU and ATS record.

The Hornets may be coming off a 100-89 victory over Miami on Saturday but backers should be concerned about a 1-2 ATS record when coming off three days of rest. New Orleans is scoring 10.8 PPG less and is allowing 13 PPG more on defense then the Lakers on the same three days removed from a contest.

Despite some impressive offensive numbers in four wins this season, the Hornets struggled in two straight losses against Atlanta and Charlotte last week (floundering for 84 PPG). But a problem that faces this club in the future is averaging a cellar dwelling 38 rebounds per game.

Adding insult to injury had the Hornets turning the ball over 17 times against the Bobcats, resulting in 30 points scored. New Orleans adjusted its game plan in the win over Miami, a team who was forcing a league-leading 20.4 turnovers per game. The Hornets coughed up the ball up just 10 times.

Portland at Miami – 8:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN

Miami (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS) will prepare to remain undefeated at home on Wednesday versus Portland. The Heat are coming off a 99-94 win over the Nets on Monday after shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc and forcing their opponent into turning the ball over 19 times.

We all know how unreliable injury reports are but tune in to see if Shawn Marion, Shaun Livingston and Marcus Banks are able to suit up for the Heat on Wednesday. All three players are listed as day-to-day.

The Trail Blazers are being questioned about their legitimacy after ripping off three straight wins. With center Greg Oden out two-to-four weeks, Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge have stepped up their game for a combined 39.8 PPG.

The problem facing Portland is giving up 101.2 PPG in four games on the road. Opponents are shooting a blistering 49.8 percent from the perimeter, helping total players to strike gold with the Trail Blazers’ 3-1 ‘over’ record on the road this season.

In the last four meetings, Portland has ended up splitting two games apiece SU and ATS with Miami, while the total logged in a 2-1-1 record on the ‘over’.

The Trail Blazers will finish up the week with two more road games in New Orleans and Minnesota.

Houston at Phoenix – 10:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN

Phoenix (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS) has exploded out of the gate to begin the season. Not only have backers cashed in on five out of eight games this season but total players have surged ahead in profit with the Suns going 6-2 on the ‘over’.

Known for its frantic pace on offense, Phoenix actually finds itself slowing things down a bit by attempting a league low 70.9 field goal per game. But coach Terry Porter’s team hasn’t needed to throw up a salvo of shots. Phoenix is leading the league from the perimeter, shooting a sizzling 51.5 percent. Led by Raja Bell and Steve Nash, the Suns are also hitting 40 percent of their three point attempts.

Phoenix heads into Wednesday with a 3-0 record on the ‘over’ at home.

On the flip side of this matchup is a Houston team (4-3 SU, 2-5 ATS) dipping below the water line with a 1-3 SU and ATS in its last four. The Rockets have surrendered 105 PPG in those three defeats, while a rebounding margin of minus-2.1 hasn’t helped matters.

And since we’re on the subject of percentages in this preview then its worth noting Houston’s horrible 41.3 percent from the field which has equated to a 24th worst 93.6 PPG this season.

The Rockets worst display came in an 111-82 defeat against the Lakers in the Staples Center on Sunday. After starting the season with three straight wins, Houston found itself turning the ball over 20 times. Tracy McGrady was 1-for-11 from the field, while Ron Artest struggled with a 2-for-11 performance from the perimeter.

Up until Nov. 28 of last year, Phoenix dominated Houston in head-to-head matches with a 6-1 SU and a perfect 7-0 ATS record. In their last three meetings, the Rockets are 2-1 SU and ATS.

Early lines have the Suns set as four-point home favorites, with a total installed at 195.

NBA RESEARCH REPORT
By Indiancowboy

Orlando vs. Oklahoma City

Over 70% back the Magic here on the road despite the fact they have yet to win on the road and just 1 game above .500. Heck, the Thunder nearly beat the Hawks at home, who is to say they can't cause a little ruckus against the Magic at home. Heck, Oklahoma City has covered 3 straight but I hate betting against the Magic coming off a loss. I would also lean on the over as I expect Oklahoma City to play well today, but I can't as the Thunder are typically an under team. This game is a wash for me all the way around.

Utah vs. Washington

How bad are the Wizards eh? Okur is still out but Williams continues to be probable as he did play yesterday against the Sixers with effectiveness. I think Harpring is still out but the Jazz have plenty of depth to combat any injury. There is no line released yet. But, the Wizards are winless. One would think the get fired up for this game having had some rest while the Jazz are on back to backs. I'm likely just staying away from this game entirely although I lean on the over as I think the Wizards finally show up on offense for this game.

Portland vs. Miami

There is no line listed for this game but Portland can play folks. People don't realize that they have some depth behind Fernandez and terrific guard play. This is a game that Portland can win outright just like they beat the Magic on the road. Miami better show up with their A game early as they were fortunate to defeat the Nets as they came back late in that game. Although no line has been released, I expect this game to likely go over.

Sacramento vs. Clippers

I was a bit surprised to see this line. I understand that Martin is injured and is not playing this game. But, he didn't play yesterday either and that was a game that the Kings should have won outright but somehow failed to cover. I understand that the Clippers beat the Mavs easily at home, but that is because they got up for that game. How do they get up for this game? I mean should a 1-6 team be favored by 7 points? Outside of the Twolves game at the beginning of the season, the Kings have failed to cover every road game. Having said that, I still don't have enough faith in them on the road to make a play, but I think this is a spread that they can hang in there with and who knows, this is a game they could possibly win outright coming off a bounce-back from yesterday's loss to the Pistons.

Houston vs. Phoenix

Houston got spanked in their last game against the Lakers. Let's face it, they were embarrassed and have had some time to think about it. In fact, this would explain the line going backwards. Battier is listed questionable for this game. Remember, Phoenix struggled against the Hornets at home who is a very similar team to the Rockets. Man, I tell you what, I really want to take the Rockets here and frankly I think the only play here is the Rockets ML or you stay away from this game. But, the Suns have yet to lose back to back covers so far. But, I think the Rockets put forth a spirited effort today and likely win this game outright after the embarrassment at L.A.
