NBA Today

SCOREBOARD

Wednesday, Nov. 26

Indiana at Houston (8:30 p.m. EST). Ron Artest will try to help the Rockets win their fourth straight game when they face his former team. Artest spent parts of five seasons with the Pacers before being traded to Sacramento in 2005.

STARS

Tuesday

— Steve Nash, Suns, had 20 points and 15 assists to rally Phoenix past Oklahoma City 99-98, spoiling Scott Brooks’ home debut as Thunder head coach.

— Caron Butler, Wizards, scored a season-high 35 points and Washington beat Golden State 124-100 to snap a five-game skid in Ed Tapscott’s first game as coach.

— Jason Terry, Mavericks, scored 16 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter to help Dallas come back from a 13-point second-half deficit for a 109-106 victory over Indiana that stretched its winning streak to five.

— Pau Gasol, Lakers, had 26 points and eight rebounds before sitting out the fourth quarter, and Los Angeles topped New Jersey 120-93 to improve the NBA’s best record to 12-1.

BROADWAY SHOW

LeBron James scored 26 points before sitting out the fourth quarter and Cleveland quickly took a charged-up New York crowd out of the game in a 119-101 victory over the Knicks. James was cheered loudly by fans hoping someday to see him play in New York. His first visit to Madison Square Garden this season came just days after the Knicks made a pair of trades that cleared enough salary cap space for a potential run at him in free agency during the summer of 2010.

THUNDERSTRUCK

Matt Barnes hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 25.7 seconds left to complete Phoenix’s fourth-quarter rally in a 99-98 victory at Oklahoma City. The Thunder (1-14) had two final chances to win, but Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook both missed shots on their final possession. The Suns scrambled around the court to run out the final 8.4 seconds without getting fouled, handing Oklahoma City its 12th straight loss.

SIDELINED

Milwaukee center Andrew Bogut will be out for a week to 10 days after sustaining a bone bruise to his left knee Monday night in a loss at Orlando. Bogut is averaging 11.4 points and 10.9 rebounds this season. … Miami forward Dorell Wright is expected to miss at least three weeks after having surgery to remove debris from his left knee. Wright has played only one game for the Heat since he tore his left meniscus on March 2 and had surgery the following day.

ON THE MEND

Charlotte Bobcats top scorer Jason Richardson practiced for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery and could play Wednesday in Toronto. Richardson has missed six straight games since waking up with pain and swelling in his right knee on Nov. 12, a day after scoring 23 points in a loss to Denver. Doctors performed exploratory surgery and found no structural damage.

DONE DEAL

The trade that sent Zach Randolph from New York to the Los Angeles Clippers was completed, though Cuttino Mobley still wasn’t available to play for the Knicks. The deal was made Friday but was hung up when the Knicks reportedly learned of a heart condition during Mobley’s physical. New York waived the physical requirement to finalize the deal. Knicks president Donnie Walsh wouldn’t reveal the nature of Mobley’s medical condition, but said Mobley wouldn’t be available Tuesday against Cleveland or Wednesday night in Detroit while he underwent additional testing. Walsh added he didn’t know if Mobley would ever play for the Knicks.

SPEAKING

“Now that we got ‘Obama’ on the sideline with us, we’re going to ride with it. Tap, he’s light-skinned, he stands for change, he’s got a law degree, he uses big words, and he’s new in the district, and he’s in control now, so shout out to Obama. We won tonight; he brought a lot of hope. … And he’s good with numbers, so hopefully he’ll change the economy as well.”—Washington forward Caron Butler after the Wizards (2-10) routed Golden State 124-100 to snap a five-game skid in Ed Tapscott’s first game as coach.

Wednesday's NBA Preview
By Josh Jacobs

Instead of the usual two-game, double-header that ESPN airs on Wednesday’s, only one clash between Orlando and Philadelphia will be televised. The Magic have been a house on fire, winning eight of their last 10 games. But the 76ers have been cooking up their own brew with a 5-2 record in their last seven.

Aside from the nationally televised tip-off, 12 more games on the parquet will give us plenty of decisions to make. Can Portland continue its perfect run at home (5-0), is Manu Ginobili ready to make a direct impact for his Spurs and is the ‘under’ on Charlotte another money play?

Orlando at Philadelphia on ESPN – 7:30 p.m. EST

The 76ers (7-7 straight up, 6-8 against the spread) have taken their last three games at home ranging as 6½ to 10½-point favorites. Philly has shot 43 percent from the field, and is grabbing 51 rebounds per games versus 43.3 RPG in those last three contests.

Orlando (10-4 SU, 6-7-1 ATS) is coming off a 108-101 win over Milwaukee on Monday as 8 ½-point home favorites. Although the loss was applied to their ATS record, the Magic logged in their sixth ‘over’ play in the last eight games. Orlando has struggled with a 4-5 ATS record when coming off just one-day of rest, but is 4-1 ATS on the road.

Thanks in part to Dwight Howard’s four blocks per game and Rashard Lewis’ 1.9 steals per game, Orlando finds itself allowing 94.4 PPG. It’s also logging in a fourth best point difference at plus 5.3. Since the Magic dropped two games to begin the season, the team is now 10-2 their last 12.

It might be a good idea to gauge the total in Philadelphia games at home, as a 5-2 record on the ‘under’ is worth taking notice of. While the Sixers are scoring 99 PPG inside their own building, the defense has been effective by holding opponents to 88.6 PPG. Led by Samuel Dalembert and Elton Brand, Philly has dominated on defense with 6.3 blocks per game this season.

The 76ers will travel to Boston then play Chicago back at home to complete the week. Orlando will play in Washington followed by a home contest against Indiana on Saturday.

The underdog is a convincing 22-10 ATS in the last 32 head-to-head meetings.

Perfect at Home

Cleveland (10-3 SU, 9-4 ATS) will return from New York with a spotless 7-0 record at home (5-2 ATS). The Cavaliers have been a storm on their own court, scoring a sky high 105.4 PPG and holding teams to 94.3 PPG (a point difference of 11.1). And while Cleveland has thrown backers a bone with five ATS wins at home, a 6-1 record on the ‘over’ should be a point of emphasis. The Cavs will meet an Oklahoma City (1-13 SU, 6-8 ATS) team in the midst of an upheaval after P.J. Carlesimo was tossed from his head coaching job last week. Eleven losses in a row is embarrassing, but a 1-6 ATS slide in the Thunders' last seven games has been detrimental to backers. At least giving up 108 PPG in the last eight has translated into a 7-1 record on the ‘over.’

The Trail Blazers (9-6 SU, 8-7 ATS) began the week with a buzzer-beating 91-90 win over Sacramento on Monday. While it clouded Portland’s 3-2 ATS record at home, the win improved the team’s shooting percentage to 46.3 from the field in the last five games. The Blazers are 4-2 ATS coming off a day of rest, but are an unpredictable 2-3 on the ‘over/under’ at home. The Heat’s (7-7 SU, 6-7-1 ATS) Wednesday date in Portland will begin a five-game road trip to the West Coast. Miami is struggling to score 96.7 PPG on the road for a 2-3-1 ATS performance, and a 2-4 record on the ‘under.’ However a 6-2 mark on the ‘over’ in the last eight could be worth investigating for total players.

What Else on Tap?

Indiana (5-7 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) has been a pure lock to lose outright on the road. Allowing 102.2 PPG, while scoring 98 PPG hasn’t been the best formula for success in hostile territory. Shooting 41.3 percent in its last four losses (two games witnessing 37 and 38 percent failures from the field) has helped push the ‘under’ to a 1-3 record. The Pacers will need to bring whatever ‘A’ game they have out of the closet when they tip-off against Houston (10-5 SU, 8-7 ATS) at 8:30 p.m. EST.

The Rockets, 6-2 ATS in their last eight outings, have finally ripped into the ‘over’ with a 4-1 record in the last five games and are smothering opponents by allowing just 85.8 PPG at home. Due to the defensive juggernaut on the court, the ‘under’ is an unstoppable 4-1 at home this season. If there’s one angle to watch, it’s that Houston is 3-5 ATS when coming off just one-day worth of rest.

Night Cappers

The Clippers (2-12 SU, 3-11 ATS) couldn’t have Zach Randolph in the starting lineup fast enough. Randolph would be a great addition to Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby already on the front lines. And L.A.’s two lone wins on the season hastens the situation. The Clips are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games. Finding the basket for 90.7 PPG, and shooting just 42 percent from the perimeter are good reasons for the overall struggles.

Denver (9-5 SU, 9-4-1 ATS) has been running amuck with an 8-2 SU and 6-3-1 ATS record in the last 10 matchups. And while the Nuggets are still looking to apply a more stout defensive effort in games (holding teams to 97.2 PPG), six ‘under’ plays in the last eight outings have seen the ‘D’ allowing just 87.3 PPG. In-fact, Denver is a solid 5-3 on the ‘under’ in eight road contests this season.

The ‘under’ is 7-1 in the last eight head-to-head meetings in L.A., and 10-3 in the last 13 overall meetings.

The Clippers-Nuggets contest will begin at 10:30 p.m. EST.

New Jersey (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) must be mentioned in this preview thanks to its 4-1 SU and ATS record coupled with a 5-2 performance on the ‘over.’ It was on last Friday that the Nets downed Toronto, 129-127, in overtime from a Vince Carter reverse dunk with 2.1 second left. On top of the 112-95 win over the Clippers on Saturday, New Jersey has now averaged 118.8 PPG in the last four wins. Sacramento (5-11 SU, 9-7 ATS) will host the Nets at 10:00 p.m. EST. The home team is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings between these two clubs. Sportsbetting.com has already opened the Kings as 2 ½-point favorites.

Orlando (10-4, 6-7-1 ATS) at Philadelphia (7-7, 6-8 ATS)

The Magic gun for their fifth consecutive road victory when they invade the Wachovia Center for an Eastern Conference clash with the Sixers.

Orlando bested the Bucks 108-101 on Monday, but fell short of cashing as a nine-point home chalk, dropping to 1-3-1 ATS in its last five games, all as a favorite. However, since dropping their road-opener at Memphis, the Magic have won four straight on the highway (2-1-1 ATS).

Philadelphia slipped up at Charlotte on Monday, losing 93-84 to the lowly Bobcats as a three-point road favorite. The 76ers are still on a 5-2 SU roll (3-0 at home), but they’ve followed up a 3-0 ATS run by failing to cash in three of their last four games.

The Magic knocked off Philadelphia 98-88 as a five-point home favorite back on Nov. 6, improving to 6-1 in the last seven meetings (4-3 ATS). The host has won the last four head-to-head clashes and covered the spread in each of the last five. However, the underdog is 22-10 ATS in the past 32 meetings.

Orlando’s ATS streaks including 4-0 against the Atlantic Division, 4-1 on Wednesdays and 36-16-1 after a non-cover. Conversely, Philadelphia is mired in pointspread slumps of 0-7 against the Southeast Division, 3-8 versus the Eastern Conference and 1-5 on Wednesday.

The over is 6-2 in Orlando’s last eight overall and 5-1 in its last six when going on one day of rest. Otherwise, for Orlando, the under is on runs of 13-4 on the road, 4-1 against the Atlantic Division, 19-7 against the Eastern Conference and 10-4-1 on Wednesdays, while the Sixers are on under stretches of 10-4-1 overall, 20-7 at home, 7-1-1 against the East and 4-0 on one day of rest.

ATS ADVANTAGE: ORLANDO and UNDER

Chicago (7-8, 9-6 ATS) at San Antonio (7-6, 6-7 ATS)

The Bulls continue their brutal seven-game, 13-day road trip at the AT&T Center, where they will attempt to cool off the red-hot Spurs.

Chicago is 2-3 on its journey so far, but one of the victories came Monday in Utah, a surprising 101-100 win as a 6½-point underdog. The Bulls are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games (4-2 ATS as an underdog), scoring 100 points or more in five of those contests.

San Antonio improved to 5-1 SU and ATS in its last six games with Monday’s 94-81 rout of Memphis as a three-point road chalk. The Spurs have gone back to their defensive-oriented ways, holding nine straight opponents under trip digits while allowing 94 points or fewer in eight straight games.

The SU winner is 9-0 ATS in San Antonio’s last nine contests and 10-1 ATS in Chicago’s last 11.

The Spurs swept the season series from Chicago last year, winning 94-79 as a 9½-point home favorite and 102-80 as a five-point road chalk. The winner has cashed in each of the last six meetings and eight of the last nine, but the visitor is on an 11-3 ATS roll in this rivalry, with Chicago going 5-2 ATS in its last seven trips to the AT&T Center.

Chicago is 6-2 ATS in its last eight against the Western Conference and 4-1 ATS in its last five when playing on one day of rest, but the Bulls are on negative ATS runs of 7-20 after a victory, 4-11 after a spread-cover, 4-9 against the Southwest Division and 1-4 on Wednesdays. Meanwhile, San Antonio is 1-4 ATS in its last five against the Central Division and 0-4 in its last four on Wednesdays.

The Spurs are on a bunch of “under” streaks, including 20-6-1 overall (9-4 this year), 5-1 at home, 12-0-1 after a SU win, 13-3 after an ATS win and 36-17 when going on one day of rest. For the Bulls, the under is on stretches of 7-3-1 against the Western Conference, 6-2-2 versus the Southwest Division and 8-3 on one day of rest, but the over is 17-8-2 in their last 27 road games.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Miami (7-7, 6-7-1 ATS) at Portland (9-6, 8-7 ATS)

The inconsistent Heat kick off a five-game, eight-day West Coast road trip when they battle the streaking Blazers at the Rose Garden.

Miami has alternated SU wins and losses in its last 10 games and alternated spread-covers in its last seven. In their most recent game Monday, the Heat fell 107-98 to the Rockets as 3½-point home underdog. Miami has topped the century mark in scoring just once in its last 10 games, while allowing three straight opponents and five of the last seven to reach triple digits. Also, the team is 2-4 SU and ATS on the highway so far.

Portland continued its winning ways with Monday’s narrow 91-90 home win over the Kings, moving to 8-3 SU in its last 11 games and 5-0 at home on the season. However, the Blazers never threatened to cover as an 1½-point chalk, their second straight non-cover after a 6-1 ATS run.

Miami went 5-0 SU and ATS against Portland from 2005-07, but the Blazers have won and covered the last three meetings, including a 104-96 victory in a pick-em contest in South Beach back on Nov. 12. The visitor is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 series clashes, with Miami cashing in four of its last five trips to Portland. Finally, the SU winner has covered in each of the last 10 battles.

The Heat are 6-16-1 ATS in their last 23 games on Wednesday, but they’re 9-1 ATS in their last 10 after a SU defeat and 7-1 ATS in their last eight after a non-cover. As for the Blazers, they’re on positive pointspread streaks of 7-2 at home, 4-1 against the Eastern Conference, 4-1 on one day of rest and 5-1 on Wednesdays.

The over is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings between these teams overall and 4-0-1 the last five years in Portland. Also, the over is 11-5-1 in the Blazers’ last 17 games against the Southeast Division, 4-1 in Miami’s last five overall and 20-6-1 in Miami’s last 27 against the Northwest.

ATS ADVANTAGE: OVER

Tips and Trends

Orlando Magic at Philadelphia 76ers

Magic: Orlando will be without Philly native Jameer Nelson, who will miss 7-10 days with a groin injury. Nelson had averaged 21.7 points and 6.7 assists before leaving in the third quarter of a 108-101 win over Milwaukee on Monday. Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu each scored 22 points to lead the Magic over the Bucks and will need to continue helping out Dwight Howard, who scored a team-high 24 points. Lewis is averaging 20.8 points and 2.8 steals in the last six games.

Underdog is 22-10 ATS in the last 32 meetings.
The UNDER is 13-4 in Orlando's last 17 road games.

Key Injuries - PG Jameer Nelson (groin) is OUT.
G Keith Bogans (thumb) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 92 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

76ers (-2.5, O/U 190.5): Philly seems to be struggling offensively, scoring less than 90 points in three straight games. But despite that scoring slump, the 76ers have won twice during that stretch and five of seven overall as they continue to figure out how to best utilize power forward Elton Brand. “We expected to better than that,” Brand said. “We will be better than that. It’s a work in progress. I’m not worried about it because everyone on this team plays hard. It’s just going to take some time.”

76ers are 1-3 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 20-7 in Philly's last 27 home games.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 94

New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons

The Pistons were embarrassed by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday and will undoubtedly be look to let off some heat against the Knicks.

Tayshaun Prince was the only Pistons starter to reach double figures on Monday, notching 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. The other Pistons starters managed just 25 points on 9-for-35 shooting.

“My top three guards were 5-for-27, but they’ve played enough basketball that they know they can’t get frustrated,” Detroit coach Michael Curry told reporters. “Add in Rasheed Wallace, and it is 8-for-37. You aren’t going to win many games like that.”

Detroit should find its scoring touch against the defensively inept Knicks, who are conceding a league-high 106 points per night. New York is also allowing its opponents to shoot a league-high 48 percent from the field.

Pick: Detroit -11.5

Miami Heat at Portland Trail Blazers

In the last meeting between Miami and Portland it was rookie Rudy Fernandez who led the Blazers to a huge road victory over the Heat. Rookie Greg Oden stole most of the media attention in that one when he made his season debut, scoring three points and blocking two shots in 16 minutes off the bench.

Portland is looking for a repeat performance from Fernandez and another strong defensive outing from Oden, who is averaging nine points, nearly seven rebounds and nearly two blocks a night, to topple the vastly improved Heat.

But it is Portland’s frontcourt trio of rookie Oden, forward LaMarcus Aldridge (15.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG) and reserve Joel Przybilla (6.2 PPG, 8.9 RPG) that has helped the club climb the conference standings. These three seven-footers cause major matchup problems, especially for undersized clubs like the Heat, who start 6-foot-8 forward Udonis Haslem at center.

To make matters worse for Miami, Shawn Marion will be out Wednesday in order to attend a funeral.

Pick: Portland -7.5

NBA RESEARCH REPORT
By Indiancowboy

Milwaukee vs. Atlanta

What if I told you that the Milwaukee Bucks were the best covers in the NBA of late....would you believe me? Well, they are. They are simply dominating as per ATS. They are 8-1-1 over their last 9 which is simply remarkable if you ask me and they are also 11-4 ATS on the year. Lean on the Bucks here as they come off a loss at Orlando (still managed to cover) and they are facing an Atlanta team that has lost 6 straight covers. Hawks need a big win at home but Bucks are playing solid and of course, they have a shot at winning this game outright which I always look for.

Golden State vs. Boston

The line here opened up at -11 and quickly moved up to -12. 66% of the public is favoring the Celtics at home here. GS comes off a pounding at Washington as they have had a change of coaching there and in the first game, this team routs their opponent. Boston comes off a huge win at Toronto. Jamal Crawford got in the mix for this GS team as they looking to have his presence add to more scoring for them. But, in such a potential high scoring game, it could get out of hand easy one way or the other. no thanks. If you lean on GS, you should lean on the over here.

Phoenix vs. Minnesota

Phoenix comes off a 1 point win over Minnesota. Remember, Ok City had a change of coaching yesterday so they were much more in the zone with a change in coaches. The under and the line has taken a hit upon the opening in favor of Minny. Nearly 78% are favoring the Suns here on the highway similar to yesterday and of course, Minny comes off that 26 point win at Detroit. If you notice Phoenix's totals, they are struggling to put up points on the road and not popping over a 100 on the highway. A lean on the under here.

Indiana vs. Houston

The public is nearly split dead even on this game. Indiana comes off a nice cover at Dallas nearly winning outright and Houston is rocking and rolling covering 3 in a row (all road games, Miami, Washington and Orlando) and now sits as a 10 point fav at home against Indiana. I lean on Indiana here b/c I like dogs typically as it is, but it is tough to go against Houston as they are playing great basketball right now.

Miami vs. Portland

This is a revenge game for Miami btw - remember, Portland beat them on the road earlier this year. But, note that Portland is undefeated at home this year, these two teams maybe b/c of their youth or what not, don't like each other all that much, Portland comes off a 1 point win over Sac failing to cover and Miami comes off that home loss to the Rockets. I lean on Portland but b/c Miami has revenge, I yield.

Memphis vs. Utah

Couple things going on here, for one Memphis has revenge from an earlier season loss to Utah plus, they come off a series of losses while Utah looks to blow out a team at home after the loss to the Bulls, conflicting ends on this play.
