Hot and Cold Bets - Week 15
By Matt Fargo

The NBA is in its final week before the All-Star break and these next two days are critical for some teams to head into the break on a high note. Matt Fargo will be looking into Hot and Cold NBA bets throughout the season and he takes a look at four games that you will want to pay attention to coming up over the next two days before the layoff.

NBA Hot Bets

Wednesday – Phoenix Suns at Cleveland Cavaliers 7:00 PM ET

Cleveland is coming off its first home loss of the season on Sunday against the Lakers so the Suns could be in some serious trouble. The Cavaliers are now 23-1 at home which is still the best record in the league and their 18-6 ATS mark is tops in the NBA as well. Cleveland plays on Tuesday at Indiana and while it will be looking to bounce back there, it will be also looking to bounce back on its home floor against another Western Conference foe. In the second of back-to-back games, Cleveland is 9-2 on the season (8-3 ATS) so there is no worry about playing a game Tuesday. Phoenix is struggling right now especially when it travels. Overall, the Suns have been one of the bigger disappointments for backers as they are just 18-30-1 against the number including a 10-14-1 ATS mark on the road. Phoenix started the season 5-2 ATS but it has been a flop ever since and it a paltry 4-10-2 ATS in its last 16 games and 6-14-2 ATS in its last 22 games.

NBA Cold Bets

Wednesday – Boston Celtics at New Orleans Hornets 8:05 PM ET

We have seen this from Boston before haven’t we? The Celtics put together a monster run and then the wheels start coming off. Those wheels aren’t off all the way yet but they had better be careful. After 19 straight wins, Boston went 2-7 in its next nine games. Now after 12 straight wins, the Celtics are 1-2 in their last three games. Those games came against heavyweights Los Angeles and San Antonio but sandwiched in there was a win at New York that took a big fourth quarter to get it done. This game and a game at Dallas close out the schedule before the break and a split or worse is likely. New Orleans closed out its four-game homestand with a come-from-behind win against Minnesota and is at Memphis on Monday before hosting the Celtics. Chris Paul will not play Monday and will be questionable Wednesday. The good news is that the Hornets will be a great value play as they will likely be getting points and they have yet to be a home dog this year.

Denver (35-17, 29-22-1 ATS) at Orlando (38-12, 33-16-1 ATS)

The Nuggets continue their eight-game road trip with their one and only stop this season in Orlando, where the Magic will attempt to defeat Denver for the third straight time.

Denver was down the state in Miami last night, rolling over the Heat 99-82 as a 1½-point road favorite. The Nuggets have won eight of their last 10, but they’ve followed up a 4-0 ATS run by going 3-4 ATS in their last seven. George Karl’s club has scored in triple digits eight times in its last 11 games – tallying more than 110 points five times – but it managed just 81 and 70 points in its last two defeats.

Orlando has alternated SU and ATS wins and losses in its last five games, most recently pounding the Nets 101-84 as a 13-point home favorite. The Magic are 5-2 SU and ATS in their last seven (3-1 SU and ATS at home), averaging 110 ppg during this stretch. Going back to Jan. 6, Orlando is 12-4 SU and ATS, scoring more than 100 points 11 times. Finally, the SU winner has cashed in each of the Magic’s last 15 outings.

Orlando went to Denver on Jan. 17 at the tail end of a four-game Western Conference road trip and hammered the Nuggets 106-88 as a 1½-point road underdog. That snapped an 11-game SU and ATS winning streak by the home team in this rivalry. In fact, the Nuggets are 0-8 SU and ATS in their last eight trips to Orlando. Going back further, the Magic have covered in 12 of the last 17 head-to-head battles.

The Nuggets are 2-7 ATS in their last nine outings when playing on back-to-back nights and 5-10 ATS in their last 15 on the highway versus teams with a winning home record. Conversely, the Magic are on a plethora of positive pointspread surges, including 35-17-1 overall, 4-1 at home, 4-0 against the Northwest Division, 35-16-1 versus the Western Conference, 22-8-1 on Wednesday, 21-6-2 when playing on two day’s rest and 13-4 against winning teams.

The under is 4-1 both in the last five meetings between these teams overall and in the last five in Orlando. Also, the Magic are on “under” stretches of 11-4 at home, 11-5-1 against Northwest Division foes, 10-3 when playing on two days’ rest and 4-1 against winning teams. However, the over for Denver is on runs of 4-2 overall, 7-4 on the road, 11-5 against the Eastern Conference and 5-1 on Wednesday.

ATS ADVANTAGE: ORLANDO and UNDER

Phoenix (28-22, 17-30-2 ATS) at Cleveland (39-11, 32-18 ATS)

The Cavaliers return to Quicken Loans Arena carrying a two-game losing skid as they host the Suns, who are concluding a three-game road trip.

Cleveland won its first 23 home games this season before running into the Lakers’ buzzsaw on Sunday, falling 101-91 as a five-point favorite. The Cavs then went to Indiana last night and lost 96-95 as a 6½-point road chalk, moving to 8-3 in their last 11 games, but just 5-6 ATS. Despite Sunday’s loss to Los Angeles, Cleveland is still 18-6 ATS at home this season, including 6-2 ATS in the last eight, and it surrenders just 89.5 ppg to visitors at Quicken Loans Arena.

Phoenix started its trip with Sunday’s 107-97 rout of Detroit as a one-point underdog, but followed that with Monday’s 108-91 loss in Philadelphia as a 3½-point pup. The Suns are 5-9 in their last 14 games and 9-23-2 ATS in their past 34 outings. On the road this season, Phoenix is 14-12 SU but just 10-15-1 ATS, averaging 103 ppg but giving up 103.8.

The Suns have won and covered four straight meetings with the Cavaliers, and they’re 8-2 SU (7-3 ATS) in the last 10 clashes. They’ve posted consecutive wins at Quicken Loans Arena by a total of seven points, going 2-0 ATS. The favorite has cashed in each of the last seven clashes in this rivalry.

Phoenix is in ATS tailspins of 4-11-2 overall, 3-7-1 on the road, 3-9-1 against the Eastern Conference, 3-7-2 when playing on one day of rest and 1-4 on Wednesday. Cleveland has failed to cover in four of its last five against the Pacific Division, but the Cavaliers are on positive pointspread stretches of 37-18 overall, 21-6 at home since last year’s playoffs, 13-5 against the West, 6-1 when playing on Wednesday and 7-2 when playing on consecutive nights.

The over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in this rivalry and 4-0 in the last four in Cleveland. Also, the over is on stretches of 5-1 for Phoenix on Wednesday, 35-17 for Phoenix against the Central Division, 5-1 for Phoenix against winning teams, 4-1 for Cleveland on Wednesday, 6-2 for Cleveland against winning teams and 5-1 for Cleveland when playing on back-to-back nights.

ATS ADVANTAGE: CLEVELAND and OVER

L.A. Lakers (42-9, 27-24 ATS) at Utah (29-23, 26-26 ATS)

After a brief stop at home last night, the Lakers head back on the road for a clash against the Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena.

Los Angeles followed up a perfect 6-0 SU and ATS Eastern Conference road trip with Tuesday’s 105-98 victory over Oklahoma City, failing to cover as a 12-point home favorite. The Lakers have scored at least 100 points in eight straight games and 22 of the last 23, the only exception being a 99-85 win over the Spurs 2½ weeks ago. In fact, Los Angeles has scored in triple digits in all but seven of 51 games, averaging 108.5 ppg overall and 113.4 ppg on the road.

Utah had a three-game SU and ATS winning streak snapped in Sunday’s 116-96 loss at Golden State as a 1½-point road favorite. Prior to that contest, the Jazz had averaged 108.2 ppg in their previous six games. Although Jerry Sloan’s team is on a 3-0 SU and ATS run at home, it is just 6-8 SU in its last 14 overall and 5-10 ATS in its last 15.

The Lakers have won three straight meetings against Utah, and they’re 7-2 SU and 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine clashes, including a six-game Western Conference semifinal playoff series victory last spring. In the lone clash this season, Los Angeles prevailed 113-100 as a 10-point home chalk on Jan. 2. Going back to the 2006-07 season, the Lakers are 9-3-1 ATS in this rivalry, and the host is on an 11-4-1 ATS roll.

In addition to its 6-0 ATS run on the road, L.A. is on pointspread surges of 5-2 against the Western Conference, 4-1 against the Northwest Division, 4-0 against winning teams and 19-7 when playing on back-to-back nights (9-3 in back-to-backs this season). Utah has cashed in seven of its last 10 against the Pacific Division, but is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 versus the Western Conference.

The last four meetings in this rivalry have gone over the total. Also, for the Jazz, the over is on runs of 15-6 overall, 8-3 at home, 11-5 against the Western Conference, 30-12 versus the Pacific Division, 11-4 when playing on Wednesday and 4-0 against winning teams. Finally, Los Angeles is on “over” streaks of 6-2 overall, 8-1 on the highway, 5-2 against the Western Conference, 5-1 on Wednesday and 4-0 when playing on back-to-back nights.

ATS ADVANTAGE: L.A. LAKERS and OVER

STARS

Tuesday

— LeBron James, Cavaliers, scored 47 points, but also was called for a controversial foul with .2 seconds remaining, leading to the Pacers’ winning points in Cleveland’s 96-95 loss at Indiana. James connected on 15 of 21 shots, 13 of 14 free throws, made 4 of 7 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds and four assists.

— Matt Bonner, Spurs, scored 22 points to help San Antonio to a 108-93 victory over New Jersey.

— Stephen Jackson, Warriors, had a season-high 35 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in Golden State’s 144-127 win over New York.

— Kobe Bryant, Lakers, became the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 23,000-point plateau, scoring 34 points in Los Angeles’ 105-98 win over Oklahoma City.

— Kevin Durant, Thunder, scored 31 points, his fifth 30-point game in a row, and had 10 rebounds in Oklahoma City’s 105-98 loss to the Lakers.

MILESTONES

With fans chanting “MVP,” Kobe Bryant—30 years, 171 days old—made a free throw with 5:13 left in the second quarter, giving him 23,000 points, the youngest player to reach that level. He joined 20 others in league history who’ve made that lofty mark. Wilt Chamberlain was formerly the youngest at 30 years, 176 days. He still ranks as the fastest to 23,000, reaching it in 606 games, while Bryant, who came straight from high school to the NBA, reached it in his 917th.

BIG WINS

Indiana has beaten the three teams with the NBA’s best records this season: Boston, Cleveland and Los Angeles.

LOTS OF LOSSES

The Sacramento Kings became the first team with 42 losses, and though they still have 29 games remaining, they are guaranteed a losing season after a 118-100 loss at Dallas.

STREAKS

Cleveland saw its nine-game winning streak over the Pacers snapped in a 96-95 defeat. The Cavs lost a second straight game for the first time all season. … Denver has won eight in a row against Miami after a 99-82 victory. … San Antonio has now won 32 straight games in which it scores more than 100 points following a 108-93 win at New Jersey. … The Knicks lost their fifth straight even though David Lee had 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Nate Robinson scored 30 points. But they allowed 144 in a 17-point loss at Golden State. … The Lakers, back in Los Angeles from a 6-0 road trip, beat Oklahoma City 105-98.

STATS

Atlanta will go into the All-Star break with 30 wins for the first time since the 1996-97 season, when it was 31-15. The Hawks are 30-21 with one game left before the break. … The Nuggets are 10-0 when holding opponents under 90 points after a 99-82 win at Miami. … Chicago finished with a 17-2 run to rally past Detroit 107-102.

SWINGS

The Warriors and Knicks met in New York earlier this season, with the Knicks winning 138-125 in the Warriors’ worst defensive outing of the year. Golden State set its own season-high for points in the rematch, winning 144-127 and easily surpassing a 133-point effort in a triple-overtime game last month.

SIDELINED

Indiana was missing three key contributors—Marquis Daniels, Mike Dunleavy and Jeff Foster—but still edged Cleveland 96-95. … The Kings were without C Brad Miller (hip flexor) and backup post player Mikki Moore, who was absent for personal reasons after attending the morning shootaround. They lost at Dallas 118-100. … Pistons guard Allen Iverson missed the 107-102 loss at Chicago with the flu. … Quentin Richardson was out of New York’s lineup with a bruised chest, and the Knicks then lost Tim Thomas late in the first half to a sore left groin. Midway through the fourth quarter, point guard Chris Duhon sprained his left ankle. The Knicks lost 144-127 at Golden State.

SPEAKING

“I don’t care if I get fined. It is what it is. I saw the two plays; just a bad call determined the outcome of that game. If they want to fine me for telling the truth, fine me. This isn’t me. I never do this.”—Cavaliers coach Mike Brown after a foul call on LeBron James with .2 seconds remaining led to an Indiana victory.

Wednesday Research
By Indiancowboy

Washington vs. Charlotte

I actually thought that Wash would be a little bit more competitive at Atlanta, but just Jamison and Butler is not enough for this team as one can only imagine how good they could have been with Haywood and Arenas all healthy - it also led to the firing of many of their staff as well. There are a few questions in this game, for starters, should Charlotte be laying this kind of number on a total of 187.5, and Wash does have a bit of revenge coming into this game only losing by 3. In a low scoring game, anything can happen and this is the type of game that Butler can take over. Charlotte has been playing better despite no Diaw or Wallace to their credit as Augustin has this team rolling. Despite all that, a small lean on Wash after Charlotte's nice win over the Clippers.

Phoenix vs. Cleveland

Like many other games, pick your poison here. What you have is a Phoenix team that won a big game at Detroit, only to get spanked by Philly and now looks to bounce-back against Cleveland. You have a Cleveland team who is coming off rare back to back losses and they look to avoid just their 2nd SU home loss of the year. These two teams have not met this year, but one has to believe that Lebron and company are not in a good mood coming into this game as they return home. Small lean on Cleveland here as Phoneix traditionally struggles against stronger defensive teams (spurs, philly etc...).

Memphis vs. Philadelphia

Memphis has gotten it done in 2 games as they defeated New Orleans at home, but bear in mind that this team has not put up a ton of points on the road and at home which makes me weary of taking them - then again, Philly is place for a classic let down after beating the Suns at home, this could be the Thunder vs. Lakers Part 2 similar to yesterday.

San Antonio vs. Toronto

Toronto finally got it done with their reserves yesterday over Minny with a massive come back in the fourth where they outscored Minny 11-2 at the start of the fourt if my memory serves me correct. I can't take a Toronto team that is still without Bosh and the Spurs are simply rolling right now. Of course, over 70% are riding the Spurs after their win at New Jersey and Outright win at Boston - do note that despite 70% on the Spurs whey they were at Jersey they covered easily, and who is to say they don't do it here at Toronto? Regardless, I can't take any team that the public favors by 70%.

Portland vs. OKC

As you know, I like OKC as a team and frankly should have been on them yesterday and normally I would jump on a line like this. But, given that Portland did not play all that well against a Knicks team who always comes in ready to play and shoot, they could bounce-back here and remember, OKC killed this Portland team at home and Portland remembers that loss vividly I'm sure so they will look to give them a taste of their own medicine. Thus, staying away.

Indiana vs. Milwaukee

Indiana is such an odd team. At home, they are awesome. They have beaten the likes of the Magic, Lakers and now Cavs at home. On the road, well, they are a different story as they most recently lost to the Wizards. Go figure. Milwaukee, to their credit come off a big win at home against the Rockets, took Detroit to OT at home, defeated the Hawks at home and even beat the Raptors who had Bosh at that time on the road - all of this without Michael Redd believe it or not. I know it's hard to believe, but I bet Milwaukee comes into this pretty game and Indiana could be in for a let down after the Cavs win - Milwaukee also has revenge on top of that. No line, but I bet you the Bucks do well.

Clippers vs. Knicks

Just be a bit wary of this line. Despite 63% on the Knicks who come off yet another loss despite playing relatively well and shooting very well, the line keeps going up here as the Clippers now sit at -4.5 from a line that opened up at -3. Of course, the Clippers do come off a TERRIBLE second half against the Bobcats on the road so they might look to bounce-back and yes, they are healthy with Davis and Randolph back. Now, if they can just get Kaman back, this team will be really dynamic. I still can't go against the Knicks though but the line movement alone makes me wonder if the Clippers bounce-back here. These two teams have not met this year.

Los Angeles Lakers at Utah Jazz

Lakers (-3, O/U 217): LA looks to enter the All-Star break on an eight-game winning streak but will have a sizeable lead atop the Western Conference standings regardless. The Lakers are coming off a 105-98 win over Oklahoma City on Tuesday in which star Kobe Bryant become the youngest player to ever reach 23,000 points by scoring 34. “It’s always fun whenever you talk about the history of the game,” Bryant said. “It’s always a tremendous honor.” LA is 9-3 ATS this season when playing without rest.

Lakers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The OVER is 8-1 in LA's last 9 road games.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bynum (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 110

Jazz: Point guard Deron Williams is certainly doing everything he can to help Utah finish the first half of the season on a high note following a rough 116-96 loss at Utah on Sunday. Williams is averaging 33.5 points and 7.8 assists in his last four games while shooting 57.5 percent from the field. His teammates also understand the importance. “We need to finish out the first half of the season strong,” Jazz forward Paul Millsap said. “Hopefully we can get this win on Wednesday versus the Lakers, get a little bit of momentum going into the All-Star break, come back at full strength, and try to make a run at this thing.”

Jazz are 3-9-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The OVER is 8-3 in Utah's last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - F Andrei Kirilenko (ankle) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 107
