Wednesday's NBA Preview
By Josh Jacobs

Before collegiate basketball takes hold of gamblers’ wallets across the globe the NBA will make its weekly appearance on ESPN. Beginning with a 7:00 p.m. EST tip-off between Miami and Boston, the evening telecast will end as Detroit and Houston descend upon the hardwood.

And so the coverage continues…

Miami at Boston – 7:00 p.m. EST

The Heat began their current four-game road trip with a defeat in Philadelphia on Sunday (85-77). This was Miami’s third ATS loss in the last five games while a much more welcomed, 7-2 record on the ‘over’ has cashed tickets in the last nine outings. Averaging 111.8 PPG on offense and falling flat on their face on defense by allowing 110.2 PPG in the same nine contests, there’s no wonder why the ‘over’ has been red hot. Some more numbers to take to heart involving the total include a 21-13-1 record on the ‘over’ in home games this season, an 18-9-1 stint on the ‘over’ as the favorite and a 20-14-1 performance on the ‘over’ coming off an ATS loss. If you’re interested in backing Miami be warned that the team has failed to cover seven of the last 10 games against the Celtics with a 1-4 ATS fall occurring in the last five head-to-head meetings. Combine that with a 5-7 ATS (41.7%) record when coming off two days of rest and there are some indications that your money could be effective in another spot.

Boston enters Wednesday’s dance on a downturn after dropping three of its last four games, getting outscored 92.8 to 89.3 PPG. A 1-8 ATS freefall has almost mirrored what the Celtics have done statistically. The offense has struggled during this problematic time, finding the hoop for 97 PPG (versus its 101 PPG this season). The end result is a point margin of zero due to the defense giving up 97 PPG during the same nine games. Despite contributing to the 194 PPG total (again, during the nine-game stretch), the ‘over’ has been a bread winner by going 5-2 in the last seven. Books have been stubborn to raise the total bar, averaging 190.8 PPG at the closing bell. This is a back-to-back spot for Boston for which the team is 7-7 ATS. But in away-to-home, back-to-back scenarios, the Celtics are just 1-3 ATS this season (even after outscoring opponents by 5.3 points per game).

Detroit at Houston – 9:30 p.m. EST

The Pistons come to the court garnering a 4-1 ATS record in their last five road games. However, be cautioned that a 2-3 SU and ATS slide in the last five can be attributed to being outscored by a point margin of 1.2 PPG. Secondly, Detroit is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 games as the underdog, but has gone 4-1 ATS as the ‘dog in the last five. The Pistons are another team playing on short notice, making their trek around the Lone Star State. This is a spot where Detroit has suffered economically, going 4-7 ATS on zero days of rest. But on away-to-away games without the rest, the Pistons are 2-1 ATS. Another angle to look at is Detroit’s 12-19 ATS (4-12 ATS at home and 8-7 ATS on the road) record versus teams playing above the .500 mark. Shooting 46 percent in the last eight games has trickled down to recent success as a 5-3 SU and ATS record can attest.

Even with the two tough losses against San Antonio (88-85) on Saturday and against the Lakers on Mar. 11 (102-96), Houston has been able to play at a high level. The Rockets are 13-4 SU and 10-7 ATS in their last 17, scoring 98.4 PPG versus giving up a stingy, 91.1 PPG. The result of this barbaric defensive effort has resulted in the ‘under’ going 6-0 in the last six games and 16-8 in the last 24. In home games, the ‘under’ is 21-14, as the home favorite the ‘under’ has rolled at 20-13 and after an ATS loss the ‘under’ has been clocked at 21-14. The tough stuff is that Houston is 12-20 ATS with just one-day off on its schedule. The Rockets are coming off a 95-84 win over New Orleans on Monday, covering the spread as six-point visiting ‘dogs.

These two teams last met on Jan. 25 as Houston fought its way into the win column by the final score of 108-105. That game marked only the third time that the Rockets covered the spread in the last 10 meetings against the Pistons.

Bonus Coverage

-- The door is closing on the Suns but two wins a row (scoring 154 points in a win against Golden State) and with Philadelphia entering in a back-to-back scenario, could there still be hope?

-- Phoenix struggled mightily in its six-game losing streak. This is a group who submitted to opponents during the massive slide, allowing 117.7 PPG. Shooting 52 percent form the floor is just an introduction to the continued emphasis on scoring and offense but on the flipside, opponents have drained 50 percent of their shots. And in the last 10 games, the Suns have been burnt on the boards, getting outrebounded in all but four of those contests.

-- What this off-balanced play on both offense and defense has allowed is an ‘over’ record putting money in the bank for a 5-2 record in the last seven. And these are games that books have set as high as 239 points to a not so low, 217 ½.

-- Going through a turbulent season, the 76ers have decided to turn on the burners. A 6-3 SU and 4-5 ATS record has been good for the standings but draining on the wallet. Eight of the last 10 games have seen books install Philly as favorites. During the season, the ‘Sixers are a disappointing, 15-18-3 ATS when installed as the favorite.

-- Philadelphia is 1-4 ATS in its last five games versus teams playing with a winning record. And although the ‘Sixers have gone 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four head-to-head meetings against the Suns, Phoenix owns the edge at 9-4 ATS in the last 14 clashes.

Hot and Cold Bets - Week 20
By Matt Fargo

The NBA regular season is winding down fast and the games are becoming that much more important. Matt Fargo has been looking into Hot and Cold NBA bets throughout the season and he takes a look at four games that you will want to pay attention to coming up over the next few days.

NBA Hot Bets

Wednesday – Sacramento Kings at Charlotte Bobcats 9:00 PM ET

Charlotte may be considered “cold” right now but this is the time to ride. The Bobcats have lost three straight games heading into Monday’s game against Toronto. A win there will get the Bobcats going again and the schedule sets up for a possible run as the next five games are all against teams that will not be making the playoffs this season. Charlotte had won a season and franchise high six games and it is still in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race, trailing Chicago and Milwaukee by only a game and a half for the final spot. Sacramento brings in a 4-29 road record (19-14 ATS) and it has yet to win a game against the Eastern Conference, going 0-26 on the season (8-18 ATS). This will be the third game in four nights as well as the second of a back-to-back set where the Kings are just 3-15 on the year (9-9 ATS). Charlotte won the first meeting this year by seven points in Sacramento and this one should end up a double-digit win.

NBA Cold Bets

Wednesday – Detroit Pistons at Houston Rockets 8:30 PM ET

The Pistons seemed to have picked up some steam as they won four straight games including big victories over Boston and Orlando. However, they have gone just 2-3 since then with one of those wins coming in overtime and two losses coming against the lowly Knicks and Grizzlies. Detroit has been better on the road this season with a 16-15 record (17-14 ATS) but it has struggled against the Western Conference, going 12-14 (11-15 ATS) and this includes a loss to Houston at home in the first meeting. The Pistons will be playing their second game in two nights and they are just 3-8 this season with no rest (4-7 ATS) including a 1-5 record (2-3 ATS) when the first of the two games was on the road. Houston has been up and down and even though it has dropped two straight at home, those losses came against the Spurs and Lakers. The Rockets are 27-8 at home this year (15-19-1 ATS) and while that spread record is not good, they make up for it with a 16-12 record against the Eastern Conference (15-12-1 ATS).

Tips and Trends

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics

Heat: Miami recently completed an exhausting week of games with a 3-1 record, going to double overtime against Chicago last Monday and triple overtime on Sunday. The Heat won both of those games before running out of gas in an 85-77 loss at Philadelphia on Sunday. Miami star Dwyane Wade averaged 47 minutes during that stretch to go along with 43.3 points and 9.3 assists. “We were probably fatigued,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “There are games where you can’t close them out.”

Heat are 1-4 SU & ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The OVER is 7-2 in Miami's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Mark Blount (personal) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 96 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Celtics (-4.5, O/U 191.5): Boston has dropped four of its last five games and is just 9-9 since a 12-game winning streak that ended in early February. The Celtics return home following back-to-back losses at Milwaukee and Chicago. They suffered a 127-121 setback against the Bulls on Tuesday, which is the most points they have surrendered since acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, who hyperextended his elbow and may not play Wednesday. “It’s all predicated on how I feel (Wednesday),” Allen said.

Celtics are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games.
The OVER is 8-2 in Boston's last 10 home games.

Key Injuries - G Ray Allen (elbow) is questionable.
F Kevin Garnett (knee) is day-to-day.
F Glen Davis (leg) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 100

Detroit Pistons at Houston Rockets

Pistons: Detroit has dropped four of six games despite a late rally that came up short in a 103-101 loss at Dallas on Tuesday. The Pistons outscored the Mavs 35-23 in the fourth quarter without Richard Hamilton, who sat out with a nagging groin injury. “I was very pleased with our effort,” Detroit head coach Michael Curry said following the game. “We stuck with it, continued to fight and did a lot of good things. If we put in the same effort with (Hamilton) tomorrow, we’ll be good. If he can go, he will.”

Pistons are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
The UNDER is 19-7-1 in Detroit's last 27 games vs. Southwest Division.

Key Injuries - G Richard Hamilton (groin) is questionable.
G Allen Iverson (back) is day-to-day.
F Rasheed Wallace (calf) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 83

Rockets (-9, O/U 177.5): Houston forward Carl Landry was shot near his home on Tuesday after the team returned from a win at New Orleans. Landry sustained an injury to his calf and is expected to miss one to three weeks of action. "Obviously, it hurts us,” Rockets head coach Rick Adelman said. “But on the other hand, it’s going to give other guys the chance to step up and play. We’ve got to have that from everybody else. It’s going to hurt us, but he’ll be back and the rest of our group has to try to step up and win games.”

Favorite is 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Yao Ming (flu) is questionable.
F Carl Landry (calf) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 95 (Side Play of the Day)
