SCOREBOARD

Thursday, Nov. 8

Detroit at Chicago (8 p.m. EST).

The unbeaten Pistons face the winless Bulls in a Central Division matchup.

STARS

Wednesday

-Deron Williams, Jazz, made a layup with 1.3 seconds remaining to give Utah a 103-101 victory over Cleveland.

-Sam Cassell, Clippers, scored 35 points with eight assists in a 104-89 win over Indiana.

-Kevin Garnett, Celtics, had 23 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists in a 119-93 win over Denver.

NOT ENOUGH

Deron Williams made a layup with 1.3 seconds remaining, and the Utah Jazz overcame LeBron James' triple-double and tying 3-pointer in a 103-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. Carlos Boozer had 23 points and 12 rebounds and Paul Millsap scored a career-high 24 points for the Jazz, who needed Williams to save them by driving the length of the court after James tied the score at 101 with 6 seconds left. James finished with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists - his 11th career triple-double.

THINGS FALL APART

The Philadelphia 76ers jumped on Charlotte early and never let up in a 94-63 win Wednesday night. Charlotte's 2-0 start was the first time the fourth-year team had ever been two games above .500 at any point. However, the Bobcats were blown out by 32 points against the Suns on Tuesday night and then narrowly avoided a record-low point total, needing one last jumper against the Sixers to surpass the 62 scored against Houston on Dec. 8, 2006.

SOARING

Josh Smith scored 22 points, rookie Al Horford led a dominant performance on the boards and the Atlanta Hawks beat another 60-win team from last season, holding off Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns 105-96 Wednesday night. The Hawks, who haven't made the playoffs since 1999, got back to .500 in a brutal opening stretch of games and added to their opening-night win over Dallas.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

LeBron James finished with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists - his 11th career triple-double - in Cleveland's 103-101 loss to Utah on Wednesday night. ... David West had 34 points and 18 rebounds in New Orleans' 93-90 loss to Portland. ... Steve Nash had 34 points and 11 assists in the Suns' 105-96 loss to the Hawks.

SPEAKING

''He's older than dirt, but he gets it done. He can still shoot the basketball.'' - Clippers center Chris Kaman on teammate Sam Cassell. The 37-year-old Cassell scored 35 points to lead Los Angeles to a 104-89 win over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SALT LAKE CITY -- Cleveland guard Larry Hughes missed the Cavaliers' game Wednesday night at Utah because of a bruised left knee.

Hughes also sat out Tuesday night's win at Golden State after bruising the knee in a collision with Phoenix's Leandro Barbosa on Sunday night.

Cavaliers' guard LeBron James started Wednesday night despite taking an accidental shot to his left eye from Golden State's Andris Biedrins while reaching for a rebound the night before. Cleveland F Donyell Marshall (sprained right wrist) and G Eric Snow (sprained left knee) also were inactive for the Cavaliers.

Wizards' Gilbert Arenas has left knee drained
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas had his surgically repaired left knee drained for the second time in three weeks Wednesday and missed a third consecutive practice.

Still, Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said he expects Arenas to play against the New Jersey Nets on Thursday night.

Arenas said his knee felt stiff after Washington's last game, a loss to the Orlando Magic on Saturday that dropped the Wizards to 0-3. He hasn't practiced since.

''It feels like a 5-pound weight is on it,'' he said that night, adding he thought he might have to have fluid drained.

The knee was drained Oct. 17 during preseason.

Arenas did not speak to reporters after practice Wednesday.
