Knicks waive point guard Dan Dickau after reaching buyout

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks waived Dan Dickau on Tuesday after completing a buyout of the veteran point guard's contract.
The Knicks acquired Dickau in the draft-night trade that also sent Zach Randolph and Fred Jones from Portland to New York. But with the Knicks already having a number of guard options, agent Mark Bartelstein said the team wasn't a great situation for his client.
''We very much appreciate Isiah Thomas and Glen Grunwald working with us to get this done at the beginning of training camp,'' Bartelstein said.
Bartelstein said a couple of teams are possibilities for Dickau, who averaged 3.3 points and 1.4 assists in 50 games for the Trail Blazers last season. The former Gonzaga star has averaged six points and 2.5 assists in 233 career games with six NBA teams.
The Knicks opened training camp Tuesday in Charleston, S.C.
Sean May misses start of Bobcats' training camp to see knee specialists

WILMINGTON, N.C. --As the Charlotte Bobcats began training camp Tuesday, forward Sean May was in New York seeing a knee specialist.
He is scheduled to see another doctor in Alabama on Wednesday. May's agenda after that is unknown, as his two-year struggle to get healthy seems without end. First-year coach Sam Vincent had no timetable for May's return.
''I think he's getting a second opinion, or maybe a third opinion,'' Vincent said. ''We're hoping at some point he's going to gather up enough information to know exactly what the next step should be.''
May, taken by the Bobcats with the 13th pick in the 2005 draft, has played in only 58 of 164 games in his first two seasons because of right knee pain. He had surgery to remove cartilage during his rookie year, then developed a bone bruise in the knee last season.
In March, former coach Bernie Bickerstaff challenged May to lose weight, insinuating May's injury woes were due in part to being in poor shape.
May vowed to go on a rigorous offseason conditioning program, but the knee remains a concern. One of his stops will be in Birmingham, Ala., to see orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
''I don't think he had a setback,'' Vincent said. ''He was working out over the summer. He was doing some good stuff. He was playing. I think now, before he goes to the next step of really having to push it for training camp, everybody just wants to make sure that the knee is healthy enough to do that.''
Point guard Raymond Felton, who teamed with May to help North Carolina win the 2005 national championship, said Tuesday he's confident May will return.
''I'm definitely not concerned about him,'' Felton said. ''Sean is fine.''
When healthy, the 6-foot-9 May has been effective in the NBA and has slowly extended his shooting range. He's averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds, and scored 32 points off the bench against Orlando in December.
May's absence has left the Bobcats thin in the frontcourt as Vincent began his first Bobcats' camp. Othella Harrington is sitting out the preseason after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, and Primoz Brezec was absent Tuesday to tend to family business.
Wizards' center Etan Thomas misses start of training camp with cardiac irregularity

RICHMOND, Va. -- Washington Wizards center Etan Thomas missed the start of training camp Tuesday because a cardiac test showed an irregularity during a routine checkup.
Thomas will receive more tests before his status is determined.
Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said last week that Thomas would compete in preseason with Brendan Haywood for a spot in the starting lineup.
Thomas, 29, averaged 6.1 points and 5.8 rebounds last season, his sixth in the NBA, all with Washington.
Cavaliers' guard Snow to undergo knee surgery, expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Cleveland guard Eric Snow will have surgery on his left knee and will likely miss the entire preseason after getting hurt last week while working out at the Cavaliers' new training facility.
The 12-year veteran tore cartilage in his knee and will have an operation Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic.
The 34-year-old will be sidelined four to six weeks and could miss the start of the regular season. The Cavaliers, who won their first Eastern Conference title last season, open this season at home against Dallas on Oct. 31.
''It wasn't as serious as some other injuries are,'' Snow said Monday during the club's media day. ''It happened early in the season, which I want to get started. But I'd rather get healthy and finish the season if I had my choice.
''They say it (recovery) will take six weeks but everyone's body is different. Hopefully it won't take that long, but I want to make sure it's fine and come back so it's healed and I can finish the season.''
The durable Snow has played in 409 of a possible 410 games since the 2002-03 season. He averaged 4.2 points and 4.0 assists in 23.5 minutes last season, but his biggest contribution came on the defensive end.
The Cavaliers opened training camp on Monday.
''It's not a good time,'' Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. ''If there is one positive, he has been in our system for two years so it won't take him long to catch up. He won't be very far behind.''
