Games Galore

Bettors have a stacked card for college hoops Friday. With several holiday tournaments either starting or already in progress, the games start early and run late. Let’s take a look at a couple of the televised tilts.

**Purdue vs. Oklahoma**

--This is the championship game of the Preseason NIT at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the Sooners as one-point favorites.

--Oklahoma (5-0 straight up, 2-1 against the spread) shook off a five-point halftime deficit Wednesday night to capture a 77-67 win over UAB as a 5½-point favorite. Blake Griffin was unstoppable for the Sooners, scoring 32 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Cade Davis and Tony Crocker added 12 points apiece.

--Purdue (5-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) beat Boston College by a 74-67 count Wednesday, but the Eagles took the cash as 9½-point underdogs. They rallied from 19 points down to collect the backdoor cover and leave Purdue backers irate. E’twaun Moore had a team-high 19 points and six assists for the Boilermakers. JaJuan Johnson added 12 points and six rebounds.

--Moore leads the Boilers in scoring with a 15.6 points per game average. He is also dishing out a team-high 3.8 assists per contest.

--OU’s Griffin is averaging 27.2 points and 18.8 rebounds per game. His power game in the paint is basically flawless, but Griffin does have one weakness – free-throw shooting. Griffin is improving in this area, however, as evidenced by 10-of-14 shooting at the charity stripe against UAB. For the season, Griffin has made 36-of-60 from the line for a 60-percent clip. He’s shooting at an incredible 75.4 percent pace from the field.

--These schools have split four head-to-head meetings since 2000, but Purdue has covered the spread in three of those games. The ‘under’ is 3-1 in the four previous encounters.

--Dating back to last season, Purdue is 17-5-1 ATS in its last 23 games.

--The ‘under’ is 2-1 for Purdue, but the ‘over’ is 2-1 for Oklahoma.

--ESPN2 will have television coverage at around 3:50 p.m. Eastern (30 minutes after the BC-UAB game concludes).

**Kansas State vs. Kentucky**

The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas will be packed with fans of the Big Blue for the next two nights. The Wildcats might be playing thousands of miles away from Rupp Arena but in terms of crowd noise, this will be a home game as UK fans travel better than other team in the country. And you know the Big Blue faithful are all over this trip to Sin City.

--Kentucky (2-2 SU, 0-1 ATS) has collected back-to-back blowout wins after starting the season in inauspicious fashion, losing 111-103 at home to VMI before dropping a 77-58 decision at North Carolina. Since then, the ‘Cats have answered with home wins over Delaware St. (71-42) and Longwood (91-57) in non-lined affairs.

--UK’s Patrick Patterson dominated Monday against Longwood, finishing with 28 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, four blocked shots and three steals. Jodie Meeks added 17 points for the ‘Cats, who put their coach in a better mood with their performance. "I thought we played with an edge," Billy Gillispie told the Lexington Herald-Leader on Wednesday. "I think that's been lacking. We've been kind of getting pushed around. I don't like that much at all."

--Kansas State (5-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) steps up in class here after demolishing five cupcake squads. The Wildcats have beaten up on FAMU, SE Missouri St., Emporia St. (where’s that?!), Cleveland St. and Oakland. They failed to cover the 24½-point number in an 88-68 victory over SE Missouri St., but they did take the money in a 69-59 triumph at Cleveland St. as two-point underdogs.

--The strength of Frank Martin’s team is its backcourt. Sophomore guard Jacob Pullen leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points and 4.6 assists per game. He’s joined by Miami transfer Denis Clemente, who had 19 points and eight assists in Tuesday’s win over Oakland. Clemente is averaging 13.4 PPG.

--Patterson has been outstanding this year, averaging 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He is shooting at a 67.5-percent clip, making 27-of-40 shots from the floor. Meeks leads UK in scoring, averaging 24.5 points per game. However, his shooting percentage is mediocre (41.5%) and you can’t help but notice how he’s taken nearly twice as many shots as Patterson. In other words, Meeks and the rest of the team need to make a more concerted effort to feed the big man down on the blocks.

--LVSC opened Kentucky as a 4½-point favorite.

--Tip-off is scheduled for midnight Eastern on ESPNU.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Gamblers can get started early with UAB and Boston College squaring off at 1:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. This is the third-place game in the Preseason NIT at MSG. LVSC opened UAB as a 1½-point ‘chalk.’ BC’s Tyrese Rice and UAB’s Robert Vaden are two of the nation’s premier scorers, but I like UAB to cover the short number in this matchup.

--Billy Gillispie is not happy about Kentucky playing at midnight tonight.

--Fresh off its thrilling overtime win over Kansas, Syracuse plays host to Virginia tonight as a 14-point favorite (as of early this morning).

Friday's College Basketball

Notes on the top games on Friday's card.

No one on Tennessee played more than 27 minutes yesterday, while the Hoyas had four guys play 34+ minutes vs Wichita. Vols held Siena to 1-15 from arc. SEC favorites are 13-11 vs spread, 2-5 on neutral floors. Big East underdogs are 7-4 vs spread, 4-3 on neutral courts.

Maryland, Gonzaga both had had three guys play 31+ minutes in their games yesterday. Zags forced 19 turnovers, held Eaton to 2-15 from the floor, 0-7 from arc. Terps crushed Michigan State squad playing without its center. WCC favorites are 11-5 vs spread. ACC underdogs are 3-1.

Oklahoma State was 12-32 from arc, most 3's I've seen team take so far this year, but Eaton was 0-7, 2-15 overall; Cowboys had 19 turnovers, had three guys play 32+ minutes. Michigan State played without Suton, its center, and Morgan was in foul trouble. Big 11 favorites are 12-10.
