NCAAB Today

Monday, November 17

Not a lot to go on with these early college hoop games, but we'll give out a little information, such as it is- please proceed with caution.

Fordham lost at home to Columbia in its opener; Villanova beat Albany by 18 in its opener. Rams lost all five starters from a 12-17 team, are the #14 pick in A-14. Villanova is picked 7th in tough, 16-team Big East.

Central Michigan survived trip to Princeton 55-53 last week; Chippewas are without Van for next five games (suspended)- they have 3 starters back from 14-17 team. Missouri State has new coach and two starters back from 17-16 team- they lost 75-60 in their opener at Auburn.

Mississippi State lost three starters from 23-11 team that won game in NCAAs LY- Hansbrough's brother transferred, a red flag. UL-Monroe came back from 10 down at half to beat Morehead State by hoop in its opener; ULM lost three starters from LY's 10-21 team.

North Texas lost three starters from LY's 20-11 team; they won opener 87-66 over an NAIA squad. Oklahoma State has four starters back from LY but they have new coach (Ford)- they're picked 5th in Big 12. They beat Texas-San Antonio 76-57 in their opener Friday.

UCSB lost its top scorer and point guard from LY, but are still picked to finish 2nd in Big West, because the othert three starters are back. Utah State is an old Big West rival- they've got three starters back from 24-11 squad that lost in WAC semis, but Morrill lost his stop assistant coach.

UMass was up 11 at half in its last game, Southern Illinois, but lost by 7; they have new coach who was Memphis assistant until now; they've lost three starters from a 25-11 team. Tigers lost three starters from the national runnerups; they beat Fairfield 90-63 in their opener Saturday.

Fresno State lost four starters from LYs team that wasn't good anyway, they beat Sacramento State 77-65 in the opener Friday. St Mary's has a great player in Australian Mills, as well as three other starters back from 25-7 team that got beat in first round of NCAAs. This is their opener.

Loyola MD had tough game at home yesterday, beating Tennessee St. to even its record at 1-1, now they visit Boston College squad that has four starters back from LY but is still picked 11th in ACC. Eagles won their opener 80-65 over Central Connecticut.

St John's has four starters back from LY but is picked to finish 15th in Big East; they beat LIU 73-63 in its opener. Cornell is best team in Ivy League; they've got four starters back from 22-6 team that went 14-0 in Ivy and round up wuth RPI of 65 (St John's RPI LY was 156).

Purdue is loaded, with all five starters back from LY's 25-9 team- they beat Detroit 82-50 in their opener (was 40-22 at half), are picked in top 15 in country. Eastern Michigan has three starters back from LY, is top pick in its half of MAC- they have a very good, steady point guard.

Loyola IL lost its opener to Rockhurst (???); despite having four of its starters back from LY. Loyola is picked 7th in Horizon. Georgia won its opener over a cupcake- they've got two starters back from team that got hot at right time last March, won SEC tourney, saved Felton's job.

Mississippi Valley State got smoked 76-25 by Washington State in its opener, things don't get any easier in Norman, where Oklahoma drilled American 83-54 in its opener. Sooners are picked 6th nationally by Blue Ribbon, despite losing three starters from LY's 23-12 team.

UAB is really good, expected to give Memphis its first challenge in long time in C-USA; Blazers beat Troy by 21 in their opener. Santa Clara is young but improving; they have three starters back from 15-16 team in Keating's first year. This is their season opener.

Arizona has had ton of chaos in last year, with three different coaches, eligibility issues that still linger, but their starting five is still very good. Florida Atlantic has new coach in Mike Jarvis, so they're winning any tactical battles. No idea what or who Arizona brings to table here.

Siena won Bracket Buster game at Boise State LY, they have all five starters back from team that upset Vanderbilt in first round of NCAA's; they're #1 pick in MAAC. Boise has very long road trip here, is picked to finish 6th in WAC after losing four starters from LY's team.

Marist lost by hoop at Rutgers in its opener under new coach; they've got one starter back from LY's 18-14 team, are picked 9th in MAAC, but Rutgers game might be good indicator. St Bonaventure won opener vs Robert Morris; they're picked to finish 12th in A-14 this year.

Chattanooga got crushed by 39 in its opener against Tennessee; now it is another pressing team, Missouri. Tigers won opener vs Prairie View by 21- they have weird roster, with five freshmen, five seniors, and couple other newcomers. Missouri is picked to finish 8th in Big 12.

Massachusetts (1-1, 0-1 ATS) at (13) Memphis (1-0 SU and ATS)

John Calipari and his Tigers host the coach’s former school when the Minutemen visit Memphis in a non-conference matchup.

Calipari coached in Massachusetts from 1988-1996 and led the school to five straight Atlantic 10 titles and NCAA Tournaments, including a Final Four appearance in 1996. Now in his eighth campaign in Memphis, Calipari has led the Tigers to the Big Dance in five of the last six years, including making it to the national title game last year before losing to Kansas 75-68 in overtime.

Memphis (38-2, 18-18-2 ATS in 2007-08) lost its two leading scorers in Chris Douglas-Roberts and Derrick Rose to the NBA, but is still favored to win Conference USA. The Tigers opened Saturday with a 90-63 blowout win over Fairfield in the first round of the Puerto Rico Tip-off Tournament, cashing as 21-point favorites. Four of Memphis’ five starters scored in double digits, with Shawn Taggart leading the way with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tigers opened last season with a 26-game winning streak (13-11-2 ATS) before losing at home to Tennessee, then the Tigers won 12 more in a row (5-7 ATS) before the loss in the national title game. Memphis went 18-1 at the FedEx Forum last year, but just 10-8-1 ATS.

UMass (25-11, 17-15-1 ATS last year) reached the NIT championship game at Madison Square Garden in April, falling to Ohio State 92-85 in the title tilt as three-point pups. The Minutemen rattled off four wins to get the final, going 3-1 ATS in the process, and they finished 11-8 on the highway (11-7 ATS).

First-year Minutemen coach Derek Kellogg played for Calipari at UMass and was his assistant at Memphis the last eight seasons. Kellogg easily won his debut Tuesday, pounding Arkansas-Monticello 90-71 in an un-lined contest, but fell Wednesday 80-73 at Southern Illinois, blowing a nine-point halftime lead and failing as five-point underdogs.

UMass is just 1-6 ATS in its last seven Monday games, while the Tigers are just 1-8 ATS in their last nine on Mondays and 2-7 ATS in their last nine after a spread-cover. However, Memphis is 4-1 ATS in its last five overall and 4-1 ATS in its last five non-conference games.

For the Minutemen, the over is 20-9-1 in their last 30 non-conference games and 12-5 in their last 17 after a non-cover. For Memphis, the over is on runs of 6-1 overall, 5-1 at home, 4-1 against teams from the Atlantic 10 and 6-1 in non-conference games.
