Maryland (3-0, 1-0 ATS) vs. (5) Michigan State (2-0, 1-0 ATS)

(at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.)

Michigan State returns to the court for the first time in eight days when it takes on Maryland in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic.

The Spartans have been idle since Nov. 19, when it took down Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne 70-59 in a non-lined contest. Three days prior to that, Michigan State thumped Idaho 100-62 as a 30-point home chalk in its season opener. Tom Izzo’s squad is on a 9-4 SU roll going back to the end of last season and it has cashed in seven of its last nine lined contests.

Maryland needed overtime to topple Vermont in its last game six days ago, but the Terps outscored the Catamounts 17-2 in the extra session to prevail 89-74 in a non-lined home outing. In its only game on the board this season, Maryland ripped Youngstown State as a 21-point home chalk. Last year, Gary Williams’ team limped down the stretch, losing seven of its final 10 games (3-6-1 ATS).

These schools have met twice this decade. Michigan State won the first 60-58 in the 2003 NCAA Tournament, cashing as a three-point underdog, while Maryland got revenge three years later with a 62-60 victory at Madison Square Garden, but the Spartans also got the money in that one as a 5½-point pup.

The Terps are on ATS hot streaks of 4-1 against the Big Ten and 4-1 in non-conference play, but they’ve failed to cash in five straight games at neutral sites and they’re 2-4-1 ATS in their last seven as an underdog. Meanwhile, Michigan State carries nothing but positive pointspread trends, including 5-1 overall, 5-0 as a favorite, 7-2-2 in non-conference play, 6-1-1 at neutral sites and 4-1 on Thursdays.

Maryland is on under runs of 7-2 overall in lined action, 5-2 at neutral sites and 4-0 versus the Big Ten. Also, Michigan State is 4-1 “under” in its last five on Thursdays, and the only two meetings between these schools stayed low.

ATS ADVANTAGE: MICHIGAN STATE and UNDER

Oklahoma State (4-0, 1-1 ATS) vs. (9) Gonzaga (2-0, 1-0 ATS)

(at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.)

The final first-round game in the Old Spice Classic matches a contrast in styles, as high-scoring Oklahoma State battles ninth-ranked and defensive-minded Gonzaga.

Since a 76-57 season-opening victory over Texas-San Antonio, the Cowboys have put up point totals of 100, 91 and 91 against North Texas, Tulsa and Grambling State, winning all three contests by double digits. Oklahoma State, which ended last season in a 1-4 slump and scored less than 60 points in all four defeats, is averaging 89.5 points per game on 48 percent shooting this year.

Gonzaga has been off since ripping Idaho 80-46 as a 28-point home chalk on Nov. 18. The Bulldogs have scored 80 and 83 points in their two games while limiting the opposition to a total of 98 points, and they’ve outshot their two opponents 47 percent to 29.8 percent. Going back to last year, Mark Few’s crew has won 10 of its last 12 (7-4 ATS), but the two losses were killers – a seven-point defeat to San Diego in the West Coast Conference tournament championship game and a six-point loss to Davidson in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last March.

Gonzaga swept a series from Oklahoma State in 2004 and 2005, prevailing 78-75 as a 10-point underdog in Oklahoma City and winning 64-62 as a six-point favorite in the second meeting in Seattle.

Oklahoma State is on pointspread runs of 8-3-1 overall, 13-4-1 at neutral venues, 5-2-1 after a SU win and 6-0 on Thursdays, but the Cowboys are 2-5 ATS in their last seven non-conference contests. The Zags are in ATS slumps of 2-6 in non-conference play, 2-6 at neutral sties, 1-5 on Thursdays and 1-6 against the Big 12.

The over is on runs of 4-1 for Oklahoma State overall, 17-5-1 for Oklahoma State in non-conference play, 6-1 for Oklahoma State on Thursday and 11-5 for Gonzaga at neutral sites.

ATS ADVANTAGE: OVER
