UNC hosts UK tonight
By Brian Edwards

Gamblers are loving life Tuesday with all-day-long action available on the college basketball card. Let’s take a look at a few of the 14 games scheduled on ESPN’s family of networks, including the marquee matchup between North Carolina and Kentucky.

**Richmond at Syracuse**

--When I think of these two schools, I think of the first time a No. 15 seed ever beat a No. 2 seed when Dick Tarrant’s Spiders knocked off a ‘Cuse team led by Lawrence Moten 73-69 back in 1991.

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Syracuse (1-0 straight up, 0-0 against the spread) as a 16½-point ‘chalk.’

--Jim Boeheim’s squad opened the 2008-2009 campaign with an 85-51 win over Le Moyne. Jonny Flynn had 17 points and six assists to pace the Orange. Eric Devendorf and Andy Rautins, both of whom went down with season-ending injuries last year, had 14 and 12 points, respectively. Rautins dished out nine assists compared to one turnover and also had four steals.

--Richmond beat Randolph-Macon 81-57 in its non-lined opener. Kevin Anderson had a team-high 17 points for the Spiders.

--Syracuse is an atrocious 1-10 ATS in its last 11 games against foes from the Atlantic 10.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Kentucky at North Carolina**

--Two of college basketball’s most storied programs collide tonight in Chapel Hill. LVSC opened North Carolina (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) as a 13½-point favorite. As of early this morning, most books had the Tar Heels as 16-point favorites.

--UNC opened its regular season with an 86-71 non-covering win over Penn as a 32½-point home ‘chalk.’ Six players scored in double figures for the Tar Heels led by 7-foot freshman Tyler Zeller’s 18 points. Another true frosh, Ed Davis, also made a splash in his collegiate debut with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

--Kentucky (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) became a victim to another early-season upset in this year’s season opener. In Billy Gillispie’s second game as the UK coach last season, the Wildcats lost 84-68 to Gardner-Webb as a 26-point home favorite. This time around, they dropped a 111-103 decision to VMI this past Friday night. That would be Virginia Military Institute, as in the Keydets, who led 57-47 at intermission and won the non-lined affair outright at Rupp Arena.

--UK’s Jodie Meeks scored 39 points in the losing effort, while Perry Stevenson had 14 points and 20 rebounds. Most notably, All-American candidate Patrick Patterson had just eight points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

--Hansbrough, the 2007-2008 National Player of the Year, missed the opener with a shin injury and will not play against the ‘Cats. "I didn't know he wasn't playing," Gillispie told CatsPause.com. "Well, then they're down to four or five pro players inside instead of six or seven.”

--How embarrassing is a loss to VMI? The coaches in the Big South predicted the Keydets to finish seventh in the league. They haven't had a winning season since 1997-1998, the last time the 'Cats won a national title.

--Kentucky had not given up 111 points in a game since 1989 and that came against tonight's foe, UNC.

--The Tar Heels have won four in a row over UK both SU and ATS, including last season’s 86-77 win as 8½-point road favorites. Danny Green scored a team-high 20 points and Wayne Ellington added 18. Hansbrough had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

--UNC leads the all-time series 20-10 against Kentucky.

--ESPN will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Davidson at Oklahoma**

--Davidson and Oklahoma rolled to easy victories Monday night to set up this huge showdown tonight at Lloyd Noble Arena in Norman. The line for this second-round game in the Preseason NIT will be released late Tuesday morning.

--Davidson (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) destroyed James Madison 99-64 last night thanks to Stephen Curry’s 33 points and nine assists. Andrew Lovedale had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

--Oklahoma (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) spanked Mississippi Valley State 94-53 as a 31½-point favorite last night. Blake Griffin led the Sooners with 20 points, 19 rebounds and six steals. Willie Warren and Ray Willis added 14 points apiece for Jeff Capel’s team.

--Lovedale is the Wildcats’ defensive stopper. He gives Bob McKillop’s team a much-needed nasty streak. His matchup against OU’s Blake Griffin will be fun to watch.

--ESPN2 will provide television coverage at 9:30 p.m. Eastern.

Kentucky at North Carolina preview
Written by The Prez

That top-ranked North Carolina is a 16-point favorite for Tuesday’s game against Kentucky despite not having two starters should provide a hint of how deep the Heels are.

UNC will be without three-time All-American and reigning National Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough when the two winningest programs in college basketball history face off in Chapel Hill.

Hansbrough missed UNC’s season-opening win against Penn with a shin injury, and the team is being conservative with his rehab. It was the first time in his UNC career that the senior missed a game.

"We're trying to give him a little more work," coach Roy Williams told The News and Observer . "It's more conditioning and those things as opposed to doing anything in practice."

Williams said he wants to see how much progress in recovery Hansbrough makes in the next 3-4 days before beginning the process to determine when he can play this season. The Heels also are without arguably their best on the ball defender in Marcus Ginyard, who is out until December.

Williams is a tad concerned with his team’s rebounding heading into tonight’s game against UK stellar sophomore Patrick Patterson. The Heels only outrebounded a very small Penn team by 10.

“The guy that rebounds the best is going to make sure that he still gets an opportunity to go out there,” Williams said. “And I told Big Z (Tyler Zeller), ‘You've got to get more than two rebounds.' … Deon (Thompson) has got to get more than seven.”

Freshman Ed Davis led the Tar Heels in rebounding in his college debut with 14, but it will be a much bigger challenge for all of the forwards tonight.

In last year’s game loss to UNC, Patterson scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds despite some foul trouble. He was held to just eight points and seven rebounds in the Wildcats’ shocking season-opening loss to VMI.

He told reporters the VMI loss was a “huge motivation.” He took only four shots, something that UK coach Billy Gillispie and UNC’s Williams both called an aberration. Thompson, incidentally, will likely draw the defensive assignment tonight.

"Last year, Tyler was great in guarding Patrick Patterson," Williams said. "No one else guarded him worth a flip."

Guard Jodie Meeks was a big bright spot for Kentucky against VMI, scoring 39 points to nearly double his previous career high of 21. Meeks missed last season's matchup with the Tar Heels.

UNC has beaten Kentucky in their last four games. Kentucky has the most wins in college basketball at 1,966 and UNC is second, trailing by 15.
