Tuesday's Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards

There are 13 games on the college basketball rotation Tuesday, including a pair of contests at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Let’s take a look at those matchups before offering a few Bonus Nuggets.

**West Virginia vs. Davidson**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Davidson (6-1 straight up, 2-2 against the spread) as a two-point favorite.

--West Virginia (6-1 SU, 2-3 ATS) has won back-to-back games since losing to Kentucky in Las Vegas on Nov. 29. However, the Mountaineers have failed to cover the number in three straight outings. They won 80-78 at Ole Miss last week as 2 ½-point favorites before capturing a 53-43 triumph Saturday over Cleveland St. as 14-point ‘chalk.’

--Davidson collected a 72-67 win over North Carolina State on Saturday in Charlotte. The Wildcats failed to cover the number as an eight-point favorite. Stephen Curry put on a show with 44 points, inserting the final nail in the Wolfpack’s coffin with a ridiculous long-range trey at the shot-clock buzzer with 90 seconds left. Andrew Lovedale added 12 points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

--Curry leads the nation in scoring, averaging 31.3 points per game. He has adjusted well to the point-guard position, dishing out 45 assists (6.4 per game) compared to just 18 turnovers. Curry played “the two” (shooting guard) in his first two collegiate seasons when Jason Richards – one of the Heat’s final cuts coming out of training camp -- played the point.

--Lovedale is Davidson’s best defender and the team’s physical presence in the lane. He is averaging 14.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.

--Bob Huggins has three starters back from last season’s squad that advanced to the Sweet 16. The night before losing to Kentucky in Vegas, the ‘Neers beat Iowa 87-68 as nine-point favorites.

--West Virginia junior point guard Joe Mazzulla (6.5 PPG, 4.2 APG) is “questionable” with a bruised shoulder. He missed the team’s win over Cleveland St. after sustaining the injury at Ole Miss.

--The ‘over’ is 3-2 overall for WVU. On the other hand, the ‘under’ is 2-1 for Davidson.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Texas vs. Villanova**

--LVSC opened Texas (6-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) as a four-point ‘chalk.’ However, most spots had the Longhorns at 2½ late Monday.

--These teams are meeting for the third straight season. They have split the two previous encounters, but ‘Nova has taken the cash both times. The Wildcats won a 76-69 decision last year as 5 ½-point favorites.

--Villanova (8-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) hasn’t faced many formidable teams yet, but who can blame Jay Wright for going soft with the non-conference slate with a brutal Big East schedule looming?

--Texas is coming off Thursday’s 68-64 non-covering win over UCLA as a six-point home favorite. A.J. Abrams scored a game-high 31 points for the Longhorns, draining 5-of-9 attempts from 3-point range.

--The Wildcats’ most impressive victory was a 78-65 win over Rhode Island as 8 ½-point favorites in a game played at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Dante Cunningham paced ‘Nova with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

--Cunningham is averaging a team-high 17.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Scottie Reynolds is scoring 14.0 PPG and dishing out 4.8 APG.

--ESPN will have television coverage approximately 30 minutes after the West Va.-Davidson game concludes.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--I think Stephen Curry is my favorite (non-GATOR) college basketball player ever.

--Iowa will be without leading scorer Anthony Tucker vs. No. Iowa on Tuesday. Tucker has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. The Hawkeyes are six-point favorites.

--Most books have tabbed Va. Tech as a 3½-point favorites for its road game Tuesday at Georgia.

(23) Davidson (6-1, 3-2 ATS) vs. West Virginia (6-1, 2-3 ATS) (at New York)

Davidson’s Stephen Curry, who leads the nation in scoring, goes up against one of the top defenses in the nation when he leads the 23rd-ranked Wildcats against West Virginia in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Curry rebounded from his first-ever scoreless game by matching his career high with 44 points in Saturday’s 72-67 victory over North Carolina State. Curry, who is averaging 31.3 points per game, scored the game’s final 10 points to lead Davidson to its fourth straight win, but the Wildcats failed to cover as a 9½-point favorite, and they’ve now alternated spread-covers in their last four lined contests.

West Virginia is coming off Saturday’s 53-43 victory over Cleveland State, failing to cash as a 14-point home chalk, the third straight non-cover for the Mountaineers. Bob Huggins’ squad is allowing just 55.1 ppg, which ranks 13th in the nation, but tonight they face the Curry-led Wildcats, who are putting up 83.3 ppg against Division I foes.

West Virginia leads the all-time series against Davidson 18-15, but the schools last met in the opening round of the 1994 NIT.

Despite failing to cover Saturday against N.C. State, Davidson is still on ATS runs of 47-21-1 overall, 10-2 in non-conference play, 44-18 away from home, 47-14-2 after a non-cover and 6-1 on Tuesdays. The only negative is the Wildcats’ 1-5 ATS slump versus the Big East. The Mountaineers are on pointspread streaks of 23-9 in non-conference play and 6-0 versus the Southern Conference, but they’re 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 on Tuesday and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 after a SU victory.

The over is on steaks of 11-4 for West Virginia overall and 5-1 for Davidson on the road, but the under is 11-3-1 in the Mountaineers last 15 games on Tuesday, 11-5 in Davidson’s last 16 on Tuesday, 23-11 in Davidson’s last 34 after a SU victory and 8-2 in Davidson’s last 10 after a non-cover.

ATS ADVANTAGE: DAVIDSON

(6) Texas (6-1, 3-3 ATS) vs. (15) Villanova (8-0, 3-2 ATS) (at New York)

Villanova faces easily its stiffest challenge to date when it meets sixth-ranked Texas in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

The Wildcats have feasted on low-level competition so far, winning all eight of their games by 13 points or more. Most recently, Villanova obliterated Division II Houston Baptist 93-57 in a non-lined game Tuesday. Against their seven Division I opponents, the Wildcats are putting up 77.7 points per game (46.4 percent shooting) while allowing 56.7 ppg (36.9 percent shooting).

The Longhorns ran their winning streak to three in a row with Thursday’s 68-64 victory over then-No. 8 UCLA, but they fell short as a six-point home favorite. A.J. Abrams tied his career high with 31 points, including five three-pointers, the last of which broke a 62-62 tie with less than three minutes to play. Texas, which will be facing its third Top 15 team of the season tonight, has scored at least 68 points in every game while holding five of seven opponents to 57 points or less.

These schools played a home-and-home non-conference series in January of 2006 and 2007, with the host winning both contests and Villanova going 2-0 ATS, including a 76-69 win as a six-point home favorite two years ago.

Texas is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 games on Tuesday and 10-5-1 in its last 16 at neutral sites (2-1 this year), but the ‘Horns are 0-6 ATS in their last six versus the Big East. Meanwhile, Villanova is on pointspread streaks of 6-1 against the Big 12 and 4-0 on Tuesday, but it is 1-3 ATS in its last four at neutral venues.

The Wildcats sport nothing but “under” streaks, including 20-7-1 overall, 4-0 against the Big 12, 4-0 in non-league action and 4-1 on Tuesdays. Conversely, the Longhorns are on “over” stretches of 8-3 against the Big East, 7-2 after a SU win and 5-1 away from home.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

Thomas kicked off Oklahoma State basketball team

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford has dismissed starting forward Ibrahima Thomas from the basketball team.

Ford says he had several conversations with the sophomore over the past week and determined that he lacked the commitment to make the program successful.

At 6-foot-11, Thomas was the main post presence on a Cowboys team that lacks depth inside. He was benched for Oklahoma State's 83-65 loss at Washington last week and replaced in the starting lineup by senior Anthony Brown.

Thomas had been averaging 8.3 points and 3.9 rebounds while starting the first seven games for Oklahoma State (5-3).
