Notes on the best games on today's card.

Fordham is 0-5 after losing all five starters from LY's team, and they've only played one road game, losing by 39 at Villanova. A-14 road dogs are 4-9 vs spread. Hofstra is 3-1, but their three wins are by a combined total of eight points. CAA home favorites are 4-2 against the spread.

Penn State is 6-1, losing only to Rhode Island; they won only road game, at Penn, but really haven't beaten anyone good. Big 11 road dogs are 5-1 vs spread. Georgia Tech is 4-0 against collection of stiffs. Home faves from the ACC are 11-9. ACC/Big 11 challenge is 3-3 so far; underdogs are 5-1 vs spread in those games.

Maryland lost its last two games at Disney (by 21 to Gonzaga, by 27 to Georgetown) after 4-0 start. Michigan is 5-1, but needed OT in last game to beat woeful Savannah State. Wolverines' only loss is by 15 vs Duke. Big 11 road underdogs are 5-1. ACC home favorites are 11-9 vs spread.

Miami OH is 2-3, but losses were at UCLA-Pitt-Xavier- this is the fifth road game in row for Red Hawks. MAC road underdogs are 16-8 vs the spread. Temple lost two of last three games (Temple, at Buffalo); they are 0-2 when they allow more than more than 65 points. A-14 favorites are 5-11 vs spread when playing at home.

Ark-Little Rock is 5-0, winning road games at Cal Poly, Pepperdine and beating Creighton (71-69) at home. Sun Belt road underdogs are 13-13 vs spread. Missouri State is 2-2, 1-1 at home, beating Arkansas, losing to Utah by 12. MVC home favorites are 9-5 against the pointspread.

Xavier (-9) won 80-57 at Auburn LY, leading 42-25 at the half; Xavier is 6-0, allowing 57.7 ppg in last three games, beating Missouri, Memphis, Virginia Tech and Miami OH in last four. Auburn lost in OT to Dayton team that was 0-24 from arc- their other losses are by 4,6 points.

West Virginia drilled Iowa by 18 in Vegas Friday, then led Kentucky by 10 at half Saturday, before imploding in second half, losing by 11; lot of travel for Mountaineers, going from Vegas to Oxford to play Ole Miss squad that is 5-1, losing by 11 on neutral court to Utah. Big East clubs are 5-2 vs spread in non-conference road games.

Northern Iowa (-1.5) won 61-48 at Iowa State LY, Panthers are 4-2, 3-0 at home against bunch of stiffs- they're 0-2 when allowing 70+ points. Cyclones are 4-1, losing by point at Hawai'i. Big 12 road underdogs are 2-0 vs spread. MVC squads are 9-5 against spread as home favorites.

North Carolina is 7-0, winning only true road game at Santa Barbara by 17; Hansbrough's leg is still an issue, soi he may not play here. Spartans lost to Maryland at Disney, then won last two games, beating Wichita State, Oklahoma State. ACC road favorites are 2-4 against spread-- this game is at Ford Field in Detroit, not East Lansing.

Northwestern is 4-1, losing by 4 at Butler after they led by 9 at half; the Wildcats' four wins are vs stiffs. Florida State is 7-0 after beating UNLV, Cal in Vegas over weekend; the Seminoles also have wins at Jacksonville (by 2), LaSalle (by 4). Big 11 home teams are 14-8 against the spread.

California is 5-1, losing to Florida State in Vegas Saturday; Golden Bears have home wins over Pacific (by 12), San Francisco (13). Pac-10 home favorites are 9-17 against spread. DePaul is 4-0, winning only road game 67-63 at Illinois-Chicago, which is a crosstown game, not real road game.

Loyola, MD won four of last five games vs Siena, winning last two here by 1-29 points, but they lost to Saints at MAAC tourney in Albany LY after beating Siena twice during season. Loyola is 2-5, scoring 64 points or less in four of last five games. Siena went 0-3 at Disney over weekend this is their first true road game of season.

Appalachian State beat Furman twice LY, 84-66 here, 90-77 at home; so far this season, ASU is 0-2 on road, losing 108-101 at UNC-Wilmington in OT, then 95-80 at Niagara. Paladins are 0-3 on road, losing by 11-20- 32 points at Charleston Southern, Duquesne, Notre Dame.

Michigan (5-1, 3-1 ATS) at Maryland (4-2, 2-2 ATS)

Maryland, coming off its first two losses of the season, looks to get back on track when it hosts Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The Terrapins started the season with four consecutive wins, including Thursday’s 80-62 upset victory over then-No. 5 Michigan State of the Big Ten as a 7½-point underdog in the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. However, Maryland followed that up with blowout losses to No. 9 Gonzaga (81-59 as a six-point underdog) and No. 21 Georgetown (75-48 as a five-point pup) at the tournament.

Michigan rebounded from its first loss of the season – a 71-56 setback to Duke in the Coaches vs. Cancer Clinic on Nov. 21 – with consecutive home wins, but the Wolverines barely skated past Savannah State 66-64 in overtime on Saturday in a non-lined contest.

These schools last met in 2000, with Maryland cruising to an 82-51 victory in a non-lined game. The Terps have won six straight games against the Big Ten (5-1 ATS), including last week’s win over Michigan State. Meanwhile, last month’s loss to Duke dropped Michigan to 0-5 SU and ATS in its last five games against the ACC.

The Wolverines are mired in ATS slumps of 11-23-1 on the road, 2-10 in non-conference play, 1-7 on Wednesdays and 6-14 after a SU win. Meanwhile, Maryland is 1-4 ATS in its last five at home, but 36-15-1 ATS in its last 52 on Wednesday.

The over is 5-1 in Michigan’s last six games against the ACC and 8-2 in its last 10 on Wednesdays. However, the under for the Wolverines is on runs of 12-2 overall and 8-0 on the road, while the Terps are on under streaks of 4-0 overall (all in non-conference play), 19-7 at home and 5-0 against the Big Ten.

ATS ADVANTAGE: MARYLAND and UNDER

(1) North Carolina (7-0, 3-2 ATS) vs. (13) Michigan State (4-1, 2-2 ATS) (at Detroit)

North Carolina treks to the site of this year’s Final Four when it battles Michigan State in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup from Ford Field.

The top-ranked Tar Heels rolled to the Maui Invitational championship last week, then came home Sunday and feasted on North Carolina-Asheville 116-48 in a non-lined contest. Roy Williams’ team has won all seven of its games by 15 points or more, even though reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough has seen limited action.

Michigan State suffered a surprising 80-62 loss to Maryland in Thursday’s opening round of the Old Spice Classic in Florida, but the Spartans rebounded the next two nights with victories over Oklahoma State (94-79, easily covering as a 5½-point chalk) and Wichita State (65-57, falling short as a 14-point favorite). Despite the non-cover against Wichita, Tom Izzo’s club is on an 8-4 ATS roll since last March.

North Carolina eliminated Michigan State on its way to last year’s Final Four, rolling 81-67 as a 10-point favorite in a second-round matchup. Two years earlier, the Tar Heels beat the Spartans in a Final Four matchup, winning 87-71 as a 4½-point chalk. These schools have met five times in the last 10 years, with UNC going 3-2 SU and ATS. The winner cashed in all five games, and the favorite went 4-1 ATS.

The Tar Heels have topped the century mark three times and they’re averaging 93.8 points against Division I opponents, shooting 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from three-point land in those contests. Meanwhile, Michigan State is putting up 78.2 ppg on 49.6 percent shooting (38.1 percent from long range).

North Carolina is on ATS streaks of 7-3 overall, 37-14 in non-conference play, 5-1 against the Big Ten, 5-2 on Wednesdays and 7-1 after scoring at least 100 points in its previous game. Meanwhile, the Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last five after a non-cover and 5-2 ATS in their last seven on Wednesdays, and even though this isn’t technically a home game, Michigan State is 5-2 ATS in its last seven as a host.

The over is 9-3 in Carolina’s last 12 on the road, 5-0 in its last five on Wednesdays and 5-1 in Michigan State’s last six after an ATS setback.

ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The ACC/BIG Ten Challenge an event the ACC has dominated the past nine years kicked off Monday however the focus here is Wednesday's matchup between North Carolina Tar Heels and Michigan State Spartans.

The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels coming off a title at last week's Maui Invitational have been dominant in winning it's seven games by an average of 29.8 points even though last seasons 'Player of the Year' Tyler Hansbrough has only three contests under his belt. Heels scoring 96.9 points per game on 51.9% from the field, 42.4% from long range and with Hansbrough expected back in the line up for Wednesday's game Roy Williams' ball club will be a handful for Michigan State.

The Spartans are recording 78.2 points per game in going 4-1 so far and did not look overpowering in the Old Spice Classic suffering a shocking loss to Maryland (80-82) before bouncing back with wins over Oaklahoma State (94-79), Wichita State (65-57). Spartans are 2-4 both SU & ATS running the hardwood vs UNC, 3-6 ATS vs ACC opponents.

Gamblers have a slew of televised college basketball games to wager on tonight. The marquee matchup will go down in the Motor City where Michigan St. will play host to top-ranked North Carolina. Let’s take a look at a few of the contests.

**Indiana at Wake Forest**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Wake Forest (6-0 straight up, 2-2 against the spread) as a 24-point favorite. Most spots had the number at 23½ this morning.

--Indiana (4-2 SU, 1-1 ATS) has won back-to-back games since getting humbled by Notre Dame (88-50) and St. Joseph’s (80-54) at the Maui Classic. The Hoosiers beat Cornell 72-57 Sunday as 3½-point home underdogs. Freshman forward Tom Pritchard had 23 points and seven rebounds to pace IU, making all seven of his shots from the floor. Nick Williams, a freshman guard from Mobile, AL., added 18 points for the Hoosiers.

--Wake Forest won the 76 Classic in Anaheim by virtue of an 87-74 win over Baylor in Sunday’s finals. The Demon Deacons won outright as three-point underdogs, while the 161 combined points slipped ‘over’ the 156-point total. All five Wake starters scored in double figures paced by junior slasher L.D. Williams, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

--Dino Gaudio’s team advanced in Anaheim with victories over UTEP and Cal-State Fullerton. However, the Deacs failed to cover the spread in both spots as favorites.

--Wake Forest has won its three home games at Lawrence-Joel Coliseum by 31 points or more over UNC-Wilmington, Winston-Salem and North Carolina Central. The Deacs took the cash in the lone lined game, a 120-88 triumph over the UNC-W Seahawks as 24-point home ‘chalk.’

--Wake sophomore guard Jeff Teague showed plenty of moxy while averaging 13.9 points per game as a true freshman last year. The Indianapolis product has been even better so far this year, and you know he’ll by hyped to face the Hoosiers from his home state. Teague is averaging a team-high 21.0 PPG and 5.0 assists per contest.

--In terms of personnel, Tom Crean is up against it in his first season at Indiana. He is playing with a roster that includes one senior, one sophomore, two juco transfers and eight true freshmen. With that said, this squad goes all out in terms of hustling and collecting floor burns.

--The 'over' is 3-1 for Wake this season, 1-1 for Indiana.

--The only time these schools have ever met was on Dec. 2 of 2003, when Wake Forest destroy IU by a 100-67 count as a 13½-point home favorite. The 167 combined points obliterated the 145-point tally.

--Tip-off is slated for 7:15 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**North Carolina at Michigan State**

--North Carolina (7-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) has already beaten teams from the Pac-10 (Oregon), SEC (Kentucky) and Big East (Notre Dame). Now the Tar Heels go to Detroit to face a Big Ten power at Ford Field, where they hope to return for the Final Four in early April.

--LVSC opened UNC as a 6½-point favorites, but some books had the number as high as 10 early this morning.

--Michigan State (4-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) bounced back from a surprising opening-round loss to Maryland to beat Oklahoma St. and Wichita St. at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando. The Terrapins beat the Spartans 80-62 as 7½-point underdogs.

--UNC’s senior power forward Tyler Hansbrough is “probable” after missing the team’s last game to rest the stress reaction in his shin. Hansbrough has missed four games this year, but he did have a game-high 34-point effort in a 102-87 win over Notre Dame in the championship game of the Maui Classic. Last season’s National Player of the Year is averaging 21.0 points and 5.3 rebounds while playing an average of just 24 minutes in three games.

--Michigan St. senior center Goran Suton is “questionable” (at best) after missing all three games of the Old Spice Classic. The Big Ten’s leading returning rebounder is expected to return soon, but it might not be tonight.

--These schools have met in two of the last four NCAA Tournaments with UNC eliminating Michigan St. both times. Two seasons ago, the Tar Heels beat the Spartans 81-67 as 10-point favorites in the second round of the 2007 Big Dance. In the 2005 Final Four, Roy Williams’ team dropped Tom Izzo’s squad 87-71 as a 4 ½-point favorite.

--The ‘over’ is 3-2 overall for UNC, 2-2 for Michigan St.

--ESPN will provide television coverage at 9:15 p.m. Eastern.

**FSU at Northwestern**

--LVSC opened Florida State (7-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) as a 1½-point favorite, but most spots had Northwestern as the short ‘chalk’ this morning.

--Northwestern (4-1 SU, 2-0-1 ATS) is off a 59-43 win over UC-Irvine as a 15 ½-point home favorite. Kevin Coble had a game-high 14 points for the Wildcats.

--Leonard Hamilton’s team is fresh off a pair of wins at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Seminoles beat Cincinnati (58-47 as 2 ½-point ‘dogs) and California (80-77 as three-point puppies). Senior guard Toney Douglas had a team-high 28 points in the win over the Golden Bears.

--Bill Carmody is in his ninth season in Evanston and the pressure is on to produce a winner this year. The Wildcats’ lone loss to date was a 57-53 defeat at Butler as four-point underdogs.

--FSU’s Douglas, a shoot-first point guard who started his career at Auburn, is averaging a team-high 19.0 PPG.

--The ‘under’ is 2-1 overall for both of these teams this year.

--From 1999-2003, these schools met three times with the ‘Noles winning two of the meetings both SU and ATS. All three games went ‘under’ the total.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Seven ACC teams are still undefeated going into tonight’s action.

--Georgia Tech is a 7 ½-point home favorite tonight against Penn St. ESPN2 will have the telecast at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

--Ohio St. remained unbeaten with last night’s 73-68 win at Miami as an eight-point underdog. The ‘Canes can blame the game on their best player, Jack McClinton, who was ejected midway through the first half for taking a swing at OSU’s Anthony Crater.

--West Virginia will go to Oxford tonight to face Ole Miss. LVSC sent the Rebels out as 1½-point favorites, but most spots had the Mountaineers as the short ‘chalk’ this morning.
