Big Monday Tip Sheet
By Judd Hall

The Big East and Big XII dominate this week’s Big Monday schedule on ESPN with a pair of quality matchups. Both tilts feature programs that sit atop their respective leagues, while the other squads are looking to turn their seasons around. Let’s get to it…

Marquette Golden Eagles at Notre Dame Fighting Irish – 7:00 p.m. EST

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the line for this contest with the Fighting Irish as three-point home favorites. They also set the total up at 156.

--Marquette (17-2 straight up, 7-6-1 against the spread) stayed perfect in Big East play by taking down the Blue Demons on Jan. 24, 79-70. While it was a good win for the Golden Eagles, they failed to cover the spread as 16 ½-point home favorites. Part of the reason for the close finish is due to DePaul shooting 75 percent from the free throw line, compared to the 58 percent Marquette shot at the charity stripe.

--Despite the discrepancy at the free throw line, the Eagles got huge efforts out of three of their best players. Jerel McNeal scored 21 points to lead his club, but he was like a glove on defense by stealing the ball six times. Lazar Hayward put up 16 points with 17 rebounds and Wesley Matthews pulled down six boards and 20 points himself.

--The Fighting Irish fought hard against Connecticut last Saturday night by trailing just 30-29 at halftime. Unfortunately for Notre Dame (12-6 SU, 4-8 ATS), Luke Harangody’s 24 points and 15 rebounds just weren’t enough as they fell to the Huskies, 69-61. Even worse for bettors is the fact that the Irish failed to cover as two-point home pups. It was the fourth straight game that they didn’t cover the number.

--Notre Dame has done well to win outright at home, posting a 9-1 record SU. Yet gamblers have been wise to fade them at the betting shops as they’ve gone just 2-3 ATS in board affairs. The ‘under’ is 3-1 for the Irish at South Bend.

--The Golden Eagles have enjoyed the road for the most part by going 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS this season. The ‘under’ is 4-2 for Marquette as well.

--This has been a decidedly one-sided battle in recent years as the Eagles are 6-3 SU and ATS since 1997. The ‘over’ is on a 5-0 run between these clubs.

Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys – 9:00 p.m. EST

--The good folks at LVSC installed the Sooners as four-point road favorites with the total coming in at 148.

--The Sooners continue to dominate the Big XII landscape by throttling Baylor as seven-point home favorites, 95-76. And to nobody’s surprise, Oklahoma (19-1 SU, 9-6 ATS) rode Blake Griffin’s coattails to this win. Griffin scored 20 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and had four assists as he continues to pad his Player of the Year resume.

--Oklahoma State (13-5 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) needed an extra period against the Cornhuskers, but they still found a way to win as a 2 ½-point road underdog, 76-74. James Anderson paced the Cowboys by scoring 18 points and eight rebounds. Something the ‘Pokes were able to do really well was spread the wealth as five of their eight players that played last Saturday scored at least 10 points.

--Oklahoma has played extremely well away from Norman this year with a 7-1 record SU and 5-3 ATS. Bettors have seen the ‘under’ go 5-2 for the Sooners on the road as well.

--The general public has seen the Cowboys play great at home as evidenced by them going 9-1 SU. The wagering public, on the other hand, have seen them go just 3-2 ATS and see the ‘under’ boast the same record in games that were on the board.

--Oklahoma State might have a more storied program; the Sooners have dominated the recent rivalry. Oklahoma has won six of the last eight games outright, covering the number in four of them with one push. The ‘under’ is on a 4-0 run in this matchup.

(11) Marquette (17-2, 7-6-1 ATS) at (19) Notre Dame (12-6, 4-8 ATS)

The Golden Eagles take their nine-game winning streak into South Bend, Ind., for a showdown with struggling Notre Dame, which just saw its NCAA-best 45-game home winning streak halted and is facing its fourth consecutive ranked Big East opponent.

Marquette has rattled off nine in a row (5-2-1 ATS) and is perfect in Big East action at 6-0 (4-2 ATS). The Eagles are coming off Saturday’s 79-70 win over Depaul, but came up well short as 16-point home favorites. The last time they took to the road in conference play was Jan. 17 when they got a 91-82 win at Providence as a one-point chalk.

The Fighting Irish have dropped three straight games for the first time in three years and are in the midst of an 0-4 ATS run. After back-to-back double-digit road losses to No. 23 Louisville and No. 8 Syracuse, Notre Dame on Saturday fell to UConn 69-61 as two-point home ‘dogs, the team’s first loss in South Bend since February 2005. Mike Bray’s squad shot a season-low 33 percent from the field against UConn and essentially lost the game when the Huskies went on a 13-1 run late in the second half. The Irish (3-4, 2-5 ATS in conference) are giving up a whopping 81.1 ppg in Big East play, but just 62.5 ppg on their home court.

Marquette won two of the three matchups last season (3-0 ATS) and knocked the Irish out of the Big East postseason tournament with an 89-79 quarterfinals win as a 1½-point favorite at Madison Square Garden. Last season in South Bend, the Irish prevailed 86-83, but failed to cash as 4½-point favorites. The Eagles have covered in five of the last seven in this rivalry.

Marquette enters this one on ATS streaks of 10-4 on the road, 12-5 in conference play, 5-2 on Mondays, 5-1 against teams with a winning record and 9-4 on the road against teams with a winning home mark. Notre Dame is just 1-5-1 ATS in its last seven on Monday.

For the Golden Eagles, the over is on runs of 43-21-2 on the road, 29-14 in Big East play and 42-17-2 against teams with a winning home record. The Irish have gone over the total in 22 of their last 30 conference games, eight of their last 11 Monday contests and five straight against teams with a winning record. Finally, in this rivalry, the over is on a 5-0 streak overall and 5-0 run in South Bend.

ATS ADVANTAGE: OVER

(6) Oklahoma (19-1, 9-6 ATS) at Oklahoma State (13-5, 5-6-1 ATS)

The Sooners put their perfect Big 12 record on the line as they travel Stillwater, Okla., to face rival Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma improved to 5-0 in conference play (4-1 ATS) with Saturday’s 95-76 home rout of Baylor, easily cashing as a seven-point chalk. It’s been all about defense for the Sooners, as they limit the opposition to 64.8 points per game and 37.7 percent shooting while scoring 80 points per contest (48 percent). Prior to Saturday, they had allowed 64 points or less in six straight games, and they’re yielding just 63.2 ppg (36.4 percent) in conference play.

Oklahoma State has been involved in three straight thrillers, losing at Baylor 98-92 in overtime on Jan. 17 as a 5½-point underdog, then losing at home to Missouri 97-95 as a one-point favorite before finally coming out on top at Nebraska on Saturday, winning 76-74 in overtime as a 2½-point pup. The Cowboys (2-2 SU and ATS in conference) are 9-1 SU in front of the home crowd, where they average 91 ppg on 48 percent shooting, but just 3-2 ATS in lined action.

The Sooners have won three straight (2-1 ATS) in this rivalry and five of the last six (3-2-1 ATS). They went to Stillwater last season and earned a 68-56 victory as five-point ‘dogs. In fact, the road team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six series clashes.

Oklahoma is 4-1 ATS in its last five overall, but otherwise is on negative ATS trends of 17-35-2 on the road, 18-40-2 on the highway against teams with a winning home record and 3-7-1 on Mondays. Oklahoma State is on positive ATS runs of 9-3-1 in Big 12 play, 4-1 on Mondays and 4-0 at home against teams with a winning road record.

The Sooners have topped the total in five of their last six after a spread-cover, but they are on “under” streaks of 9-2-1 on the road, 9-3 in conference play, 4-0 against teams with a winning record and 10-2-1 on the road against a team with a winning home mark. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State has easily topped the total in three straight games, but the under for the Cowboys is on stretches of 16-6 on Mondays, 4-1 after a straight-up win and 4-0 against teams with a winning record. Also, the under has been the play in the last four meetings in the Bedlam Series.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Tips and Trends

#10 Marquette at #19 Notre Dame

Marquette: The Golden Eagles bring a nine-game winning streak to South Bend and have won eight of the last 11 meetings with Notre Dame. Last season, Marquette averaged 88 points in three meetings with the Irish and shot nearly 45 percent from 3-point range (33-of-74). The Golden Eagles have also limited opponents to just 65.6 points per game during their winning streak. “We don’t have to temper our excitement, we just have continue to work hard,” Marquette head coach Buzz Williams said. “It’s a big game. It’s Notre Dame. It’s Marquette. We will be ready to play.”

Golden Eagles are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games.
The OVER is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 77

Notre Dame (-2.5, O/U 155.5): The Fighting Irish will be looking to get back on track after seeing their 45-game home winning streak end on Saturday with a 69-61 loss to Connecticut. This despite another impressive performance from reigning Big East Player of the Year Luke Harangody, who totaled 24 points and 15 rebounds for his eighth straight double-double. Unfortunately for him, Notre Dame's other four starters scored just 22 points between them on 8-for-39 shooting (21 percent). “(Three) losses in a row in the Big East, that’s what everyone’s focusing on right now in this locker room,” said Irish senior guard Kyle McAlarney, who sank three 3-pointers but missed his other 12 shots from the field. “We need to win.”

Notre Dame is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games overall.
The OVER is 8-3 in Notre Dame's last 11 Monday games.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 79

#5 Oklahoma at Oklahoma State

Oklahoma (-2.5, O/U 152.5): Sooners forward Blake Griffin leads the nation with 16 double-doubles and got his latest in a 95-76 rout of Baylor on Saturday. The 6-foot-10 Griffin totaled 20 points and 17 rebounds and owns the Big 12 record for games of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds with nine. He rolled his left ankle late in the first half against the Bears but said he will be ready for the latest game in the "Bedlam Series" against Oklahoma State. The Sooners have won five of the last six meetings.

Oklahoma is 3-7-1 ATS in its last 11 Monday games.
The UNDER is 9-2-1 in Oklahoma's last 12 road games.

Key Injuries - F Blake Griffin (ankle) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 80 (Side Play of the Day)

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys will likely have a lot of trouble matching up with Griffin since the tallest member of their rotation is just 6-8 after 6-11 center Ibrahima Thomas decided to transfer just seven games into the season. Oklahoma State head coach Travis Ford has played 6-11 Scott Warner a total of five minutes in four games, so Malcoln Kirkland will need to step up. Ford usually likes to play three and four guards in the same lineup but may have to switch gears in order to deal with Griffin.

Oklahoma State is 9-3-1 ATS in its last 13 games vs.Big 12.
The UNDER is 16-6 in Oklahoma State's last 22 Monday games.

Key Injuries - C Ibrahima Thomas (transferred) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 72
