Big Monday Breakdown
By Brian Edwards

Whether you are chasing or pressing after the results of your Super Bowl wagers, you have to be fired up for what is – without a doubt – the best Big Monday card of the season in college basketball. Four legit Final Four contenders in a pair of crucial conference games with Bill Raftery on the color call in Morgantown. Now that’s what I’m talking about!

**Villanova at West Virginia**

Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened West Virginia (19-3 straight up, 9-12 against the spread) as a 4 1/2-point favorite.

Villanova (20-2 SU, 15-6 ATS) went down for just the second time this year Saturday, losing 103-90 at Georgetown as a two-point underdog. The Hoyas jumped on the Wildcats early and often, leading by 19 at intermission. This gave gamblers a chance to back ‘Nova catching double digits for second-half wagers. In essence, bettors backing the Wildcats minus four in the second half were left with ‘Nova plus 15 (since they were laying four while trailing by 19 – hope you’re following me at home). That was a winner, but that was the only thing good from out of Jay Wright’s team Saturday.

Senior guard Scottie Reynolds had 24 points and six assists against the Hoyas, but he also committed six turnovers. For the season, Reynolds leads the Wildcats in scoring (18.7 points per game) and steals (1.6 per game).

West Va. also fell behind early Saturday, but it rallied to not only win but also take the cash in a 79-60 win over St. John’s at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Mountaineers covered the spread comfortably as 7 ½-point road favorites. Da’Sean Butler erupted for 33 points, six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals to pace WVU.

Bob Huggins’ team is 10-1 SU but just 4-6 ATS at home. The ‘Neers are 1-2 ATS in three single-digit home ‘chalk’ situations.

Villanova is 1-1 both SU and ATS as a road underdog, losing at Georgetown and winning outright at Louisville.

The ‘under’ is 10-9 overall for WVU, 5-3 in its home games.

The ‘over’ is on a 13-3 run for the Wildcats, who have seen it cash at a 14-7 overall clip for the year.

When these teams met in Morgantown last year, WVU cruised to a 93-72 victory as a 4 ½-point home favorite. Butler exploded for a career-high 43 points against ‘Nova. Reynolds had a nightmare performance, fouling out after shooting 3-of-11 from the floor and committing five turnovers compared to just one assist.

ESPN will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Kansas at Texas**

LVSC opened top-ranked Kansas (22-1 SU, 9-10-1 ATS) as a one-point favorite.

--Texas (19-4 SU, 8-11 ATS) started the season 17-0 and garnered the nation’s No. 1 ranking in the process. But since then, the Longhorns have lost four of their last six games, including Saturday’s 80-71 loss at Oklahoma as 6 ½-point road favorites. Even worse, Rick Barnes’ team is mired in an atrocious 1-9 ATS slide.

Texas has won 12 of its 13 home games, posting a 4-5 spread record.

Since suffering its only loss at Tennessee, Kansas has won eight consecutive games. However, KU is in the midst of a 3-6-1 ATS slump. The Jayhawks have failed to cover the number in three straight contests, including Saturday’s 75-64 win over Nebraska as 21-point home favorites. Marcus Morris was the catalyst for KU, producing 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The ‘over’ is 11-7 overall for the ‘Horns, but they have watched the ‘under’ go 5-4 in their home assignments.

KU has seen the ‘under’ cash at an 11-8 overall clip.

Kansas has won five of its last six head-to-head meetings against Texas, with the ‘over’ going 5-1 in those encounters.

Tip-off is slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

Northwestern improved its profile with Sunday’s 78-61 win over Indiana as a 9 ½-point home favorite. The Wildcats improved to 5-6 in Big Ten play and 16-7 overall. They return to the court Wednesday at Iowa before back-to-back home games versus Minnesota and Penn St.

In a battle of bubble teams in South Bend at the Joyce Center, Notre Dame beat South Florida 65-62 Sunday as a 7 ½-point home favorite. Although the Bulls fell into a classic flat spot after winning at Georgetown earlier in the week, they took the cash for the seventh straight time out.

USF’s Augustus Gilchrist missed his 15th straight game against Notre Dame, but the Bulls’ premier big man is expected to return soon, if not this week.

North Carolina is in big trouble. The defending national champs fell to 13-10 overall and an abysmal 2-6 in ACC play with Sunday’s 92-71 loss at Maryland.

(2) Villanova (20-2, 15-6 ATS) at (6) West Virginia (19-3, 9-12 ATS)

The Mountaineers look to extend their winning streak to seven when they host Villanova inside WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.V., in a nationally televised Big East showdown between two Top-10 teams.

The Wildcats had their 11-game winning streak (9-2 ATS) snapped on Saturday when they went to Georgetown and got blown out 103-90, failing to cash as two-point ‘dogs. Villanova is 10-2 away from home this season (8-4 ATS), but they give up a whopping 80.3 points per game on the road and allow the opposition to shoot 43.1 percent from the floor.

West Virginia is 3-3 ATS during its six-game winning streak, but the Mountaineers have won and covered in each of the last two, including Satruday’s 79-60 come-from-behind win at St. John’s, cashing as a 7½-point favorite. The Mountaineers got 33 points, six rebounds and four assists from star Da’Sean Butler as they rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit and outscored St. John’s 57-27 in the second half.

Last season, West Virginia destroyed Villanova 93-72 as a 4½-point home favorite, and the Mountaineers have won and covered in four of the last five meetings and four of the last five played in Morgantown dating back to 2004. In this series, the home team has a 6-2 ATS edge in the last eight clashes.

Villanova is on ATS surges of 9-3 overall, 8-3 in Big East action, 5-1 on the road, 5-0 on Monday and 10-4 against teams with a winning record. Meanwhile, despite back-to-back spread-covers in its last two contests, West Virginia is in ATS funks of 1-4 after a spread-cover and 1-6 at home against a team with a winning road record.

It’s been nothing but “overs” for the Wildcats lately, including 13-3 overall, 7-2 in Big East games, 4-0 on the road, 6-1 after a straight-up loss and 7-3 against teams with winning records. Conversely, the Mountaineers are on “under” streaks that include 5-2 in conference contests, 4-1 on Monday, 6-1 after a spread-cover and 20-8 at home against a teams with a winning road record.

Finally, the over has cashed in seven of the last 10 meetings in this rivalry.

ATS ADVANTAGE: WEST VIRGINIA and OVER

(1) Kansas (22-1, 9-10-1 ATS) at (9) Texas (19-4, 8-11 ATS)

The Jayhawks make the trek to the Erwin Center in Austin in search of a ninth-straight win as they face struggling Texas in a pivotal Big 12 matchup.

Kansas has rattled off eight straight wins (3-4-1 ATS), but it got a battle Saturday against Nebraska, prevailing just 75-64 and coming nowhere near cashing as a 21-point home favorite. The Jayhawks have won all four Big 12 road games, but they are just 1-2-1 ATS in those and 3-5-1 ATS on the highway overall.

Texas is just 2-4 SU since being jumping to the top spot in the national rankings for the first time in school history on Jan. 18, and it has failed at the betting window in nine of its last 10 overall. On Saturday, the Longhorns went to Oklahoma as 6½-point road favorites and lost outright 80-71. They have been unable to stop anybody lately, allowing the opposition to score 78.2 ppg and shoot 45.8 percent from the floor over the last five outings.

The Jayhawks have won five of the last six clashes with Texas (3-3 ATS), including an 83-73 home win last season, cashing as eight-point favorites. In the last meeting in Austin in 2008, Texas prevailed 72-69 as a 5½-point home underdog.

Kansas is just 2-6-1 ATS in its last nine road outings and 1-3-1 ATS in its last five after a non-cover, but it is on ATS runs of 16-5 on Mondays and 17-7-2 in Big 12 games. Texas has cashed in 23 of 32 Monday contests, but in addition to failing to cash in nine of their last 10 overall, the Longhorns are on ATS slides of 6-21-1 in conference play, 0-4 at home, 1-7 after a non-cover and 1-8 against teams with a winning record.

The Jayhawks have topped the total in five of six against winning teams, but stayed below the posted number in four of five on Mondays and 25 of 34 after a straight-up win. The Longhorns have stayed below the total in 13 of 17 on Monday contests, but they’ve gone “over” in four of five overall and five of seven at home. Also, the over has been the play in five of six Kansas-Texas battles overall.

ATS ADVANTAGE: KANSAS

This is a really BIG MONDAY!
Doug Upstone

ESPN viewers have suffered a visual assault this past week promoting tonight's games and rivalry week in general, yet the matchups from the Big East and Big 12 are exemplary. Negative thinkers may believe Villanova and Texas losing on Saturday takes away from the meaningfulness of these contests; however this college basketball writer and sports bettor chooses to think differently, instead it creates even greater urgency for the Wildcats and Longhorns to play their best and prevail. Football may be history for another season, but what a way to kickoff the off-season!

Villanova at West Virginia

Villanova (20-2, 15-6 ATS) completes the gruesome task of two games in three days on the Big East conference road. The Wildcats started their game at Georgetown like many cars around Washington D.C. area Saturday, stuck with no place to go in losing 103-90. Nova ran into a focused Hoyas club off a loss to South Florida, as they shot 56 percent from the field, went 8 of 13 from beyond the arc and hit 12 of 13 free throws before halftime in building 50-31 lead. Coach Jay Wright's squad did more than fair share to contribute to first conference loss, committing 16 turnovers over the opening 20 minutes.
"That was not one of our better performances, but you've got to give Georgetown most of the credit. They jumped on us," coach Wright said. The Wildcats have won and covered both their games this season with one day between contests and is 18-6 ATS playing against a team with a winning record after 15 or more games over the last two seasons.

West Virginia (19-3, 9-12 ATS) is in second place, one game behind Villanova and Syracuse and played Saturday in a strange contest even for them. St. John's was a popular home favorite among sports handicappers receiving 7.5-points with the Mountaineers in look-ahead situation. It certainly seemed like a smart wager with the Red Storm up 16-points in the first half and leading 33-22 at halftime. Coach Bob Huggins lit into his team and six minutes in the second half, they went on 16-0 run on the way to a 57-27 final 20 minutes, for the win and cover.

With a six-game winning streak (4-2 ATS) the Mountaineers are getting their house in order. Devin Ebanks is scoring better, Truck Bryant has regained his shooting eye and though Kevin Jones has been slightly off, he kills opposing teams with his assertive offensive rebounding, adding points in that manner. Da'Sean Butler is West Virginia brightest star and is playing like it. The bottom line, coach Bob Huggins is starting to see the team that started 11-0, albeit, against stiffer competition these days and his club is 10-4 ATS in February.

This has all the makings of a real Big East physical war in which the basketball won't be pretty, but entertaining nevertheless. Betonline.com has West Virginia as five-point favorite with total of 150 and they are 4-1 SU and ATS the last five times Nova came calling.

Villanova is 10-4 ATS facing clubs with winning records and is 5-2 SU and on the road this campaign. The Mountaineers are 11-1 and 4-7 ATS at home and university officials hope the only thing the fans bring is a full throat to scream positively for their team.

Kansas at Texas

Studying tape of Texas (19-4, 9-10 ATS) early in the season, the most discernable difference is defensive on-the-ball pressure. The Longhorns played with greater enthusiasm in the first part of the year and have to rekindle that feeling, especially against a team like No. 1 Kansas. The 80-71 loss at Oklahoma as a touchdown favorite was the lowest point of the season for a club that has lost four of six and covered the spread once since Dec.22 (1-9 ATS).

Oklahoma deserved credit for making nine 3-point bombs in the first half, but a hand up or denial defense would have helped. According to Orangebloods.com, Texas missed anywhere from 8 to 17 layups against a second-rate Sooners frontline and the free throw shooting was hysterical if it wasn't so sad (10 of 27).

Texas is at the top of their game when the points are distributed. Damion James, Avery Bradley and for the most part Dexter Pittman hit their averages, but when Justin Mason, Dogus Balbay, Gary Johnson and J'Covan Brown are at or near double digits, Texas is that much better. The Horns are 31-18 ATS at home against offensive teams scoring 77 or more points a contest.

After suffering brief slump caused by internal and external forces, center Cole Aldrich is back and Kansas (22-1, 9-10-1 ATS) is back on track. The big man is exhibiting many of the qualities why he is being compared to former NBA great Kevin McHale. His presence along with a smokin' hot Marcus Morris, gives the Jayhawks power in the paint, matched with devastating perimeter game. Kansas plays the 94-foot game led by PG Sherron Collins and the chemistry issue that manifested itself is to behind this team. The Jayhawks are 11-3 ATS vs. clubs outscoring their opponents by eight points a contest after 15 or games on the year.

It's not official, but if Texas can't knock off top-ranked Kansas in Austin, their season might be over, trying to be elite club. Both teams are Big Monday winners, with the Longhorns 23-9 ATS and the Jayhawks 16-5 ATS to start another work week.

Kansas is a 1.5-point road favorite and the straight up winner is 8-2 ATS in last 10 meetings, including three in a row.
