Early-Action Tip Sheet
By Judd Hall

I know the Super Bowl is just a day away, but today’s college basketball card is loaded with quality matchups. Here is a troika of early tilts to get your fix.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Pittsburgh Panthers

--The Irish have fallen on hard times over their past four games, all defeats. The skid has not only knocked them down the Big East’s standings, but Notre Dame has also fallen out of the Las Vegas Sports Consultants’ Top 30 this week.

--LVSC has opened the Panthers as 12-point home favorites with a total of 147.

--Notre Dame’s (12-7 straight up, 4-9 against the spread) latest setback came as a three-point home “chalk” versus the Golden Eagles, 71-64. The Fighting Irish kept it respectable by trailing 33-30 at the half, but they couldn’t overcome losing the turnover battle to Marquette, 10-3, when all was said and done. Luke Harangody once again proved he’s force on the hardwood with 29 points and 17 rebounds.

--One of the big issues for the Fighting Irish right now is to find other guys to help Harangody out. Tory Jackson scored 10 points against Marquette, but he was the only other shooter on the Notre Dame roster to score in the double-digits. In Notre Dame’s last four defeats, Harangody has averaged 26.5 points per game. The rest of the team has had just four double-digit scorers in that time.

--Pittsburgh (18-2 SU, 8-6-1 ATS) is coming off of a tough 67-57 loss versus the Wildcats as a 3 ½-point road favorite on Jan. 28. While the Panthers got a great effort out of Sam Young (14 points, eight rebounds) and Brad Wanamaker (13 points), their defense was lacking. That’s because they allowed Villanova to hit six of 15 shots from beyond the arc, while the Panthers only connected on three of 16 three-point shots.

--Notre Dame has gone 5-1 ATS in its last six games at Pitt.

--The ‘over’ has cashed tickets in the last four meetings.

--The Fighting Irish have posted a 6-8 SU and ATS mark over the last two years when playing road games in the Big East. Bettors have seen the ‘over’ go 11-3 in those 14 tilts as well.

--Pittsburgh is 16-4 SU and 11-9 ATS when playing home games against Big East challengers. The ‘over’ is 12-8 in those contests.

--The opening for this showdown is 12:00 p.m. EST on ESPN.

Michigan Wolverines at Purdue Boilermakers

--The Wolverines have dropped four of their last five matches this season. The most recent coming as four-point road ‘dogs to Ohio State, 72-54, last Wednesday. Michigan (14-7 SU, 7-7-1 ATS) shot incredibly well from the free throw line (89.5 percent), but looked ragged when shooting from the field (30.6 percent). And turning the ball over 21 times certainly didn’t help the Wolverines in Columbus either.

--Michigan will be without freshman guard Zack Novak, who gave the P.J. Hill of the Buckeyes a solid elbow to the face. Novak isn’t a big scorer for Michigan, averaging just 6.7 points per game. But he has been great for them on the boards by gaining 5.6 rebounds per game in his last five appearances.

--Purdue (16-4 SU, 8-8 ATS) has been on a roll recently, winning five straight matches. Although, the Boilermakers needed a three-pointer from Robbie Hummel in the final minute to beat Wisconsin, 64-63, on Jan. 27. E’Twaun Moore put up 17 points with five boards and six assists for the Boilers. A great win, and even better for the gamblers, they covered as one-point road ‘dogs. Purdue is on a 4-1 ATS run.

--The good folks at LVSC have made the Boilermakers 11 ½-point home faves. The total has opened at 127.

--Purdue has enjoyed a lot of success at home against its Big Ten foes, going 11-1 SU and 9-3 ATS in the last two seasons. The ‘under’ has posted an 8-4 mark.

--The Wolverines have dreaded playing outside of Ann Arbor over the last two years in league play, as evidenced by a 4-11 SU and 7-8 ATS record. The ‘under’ has made bettors happy by going 10-4-1.

--The Boilers are 6-4 SU and 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings. The ‘under’ is on a 4-0 run.

--You can catch this contest on CBS, starting at 1:00 p.m. EST.

Stanford Cardinal at UCLA Bruins

--LVSC has installed the Bruins as 11 ½-point home favorites, with the total coming in at 138.

--Stanford (13-5 SU, 12-4-1 ATS) ended up losing 70-69 heartbreaker to the Trojans as a six-point road ‘dog last Thursday night. The Cardinal had four players score in the double-digits and out-rebounded USC 28-23. Yet their defense was lacking in the field as they allowed Southern Cal to shoot 53 percent.

--The Bruins were set up for a big time battle when they took on California on Jan. 29. Fortunately for UCLA (16-4 SU, 9-10 ATS), they rolled as a 10-point home “chalk,” 81-66. Darren Collison scored 18 points and dished out five assists in the victory. Ben Howland’s squad truly shined at the charity strip, hitting 21 of their 23 freebies.

--Bettors have been able to bank on the Cardinal to cover in Pac-10 road tilts with a 7-8 SU and 11-4 ATS record. The ‘over’ is 11-4 in that stretch.

--UCLA has been damn near automatic at home over the last two years with a 10-2 record SU. Yet they have gone just 7-5 ATS. The ‘over’ is 9-3 in this spot, too.

--The ‘over’ is on a 6-0 run in the head-to-head meetings.

--ABC will be broadcasting this matchup at 3:30 p.m. EST.

Florida at Tennessee
By Brian Edwards

With its postseason expectations seemingly starting to wither away, a desperate Tennessee (12-7 straight up, 7-9-1 against the spread) team will play host to Florida on Saturday night in a crucial SEC East showdown.

Bruce Pearl’s team isn’t necessarily in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament, at least not at this point. However, it’s blatantly obvious that the Volunteers have got to get it going now. They have lost five of their last eight games.

Even worse, the Vols own an abysmal 2-6 spread record in their last eight outings. They are off a 79-73 loss to LSU on Wednesday as 7 ½-point home favorites. UT also lost at home last Saturday, dropping a 54-52 decision to Memphis as a three-point ‘chalk.’

On the flip side, Florida (18-3 SU, 6-7-1 ATS) is absolutely on fire with 12 wins in its last 13 games. Most recently, UF has cashed tickets at a 4-0-1 ATS clip in its last five games.

After falling apart in the final minute and losing 70-69 at South Carolina on a buzzer beater 10 days ago, the Gators have responded with dominant performances in their last two games. They went into Music City last Sunday and destroyed Vanderbilt 94-69 as one-point road favorites.

Sophomore forward Chandler Parsons, who had missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity prior to South Carolina’s buzzer-beating shot, erupted for a career-high 27 points against the Commodores. Parsons played out of his mind, hitting 10-of-11 shots, including 7-of-8 from 3-point range. He also pulled down eight rebounds to go with four assists and zero turnovers.

Billy Donovan’s team also dealt out woodshed treatment Wednesday, spanking Georgia by an 83-57 count as a 16 ½-point home favorite. Nick Calathes had a triple-double, finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Alex Tyus, whose steady improvement is starting to remind UF fans of a young Udonis Haslem, added 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.

Although the Gators have to feel good about themselves, particularly their 18-3 record, we should note that UF had the exact same ledger at this point last year. Of course, we know that bunch completely fell apart down the stretch and eventually missed out on the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade.

“I didn't like the path we went down last year when we were 18-3 because I thought our practice habits started to relax,” Donovan told GatorBait.net. “You could see as a coach the slippage and you were trying to tell them about it and show them. They had to go through it.

"I don't sense that slippage right now from our team but I also said if there wasn't slippage last year, I don't know if we were good enough to knock off a lot of those teams that we played last year."

While Florida appears to be on the rise, UT has to be considered one of the nation’s bigger disappointments. The Vols still own a big win over Marquette in non-conference play, but their victory over Georgetown is looking less impressive by the minute. Another better-than-decent non-conference triumph worth mentioning is one over Siena, a team that has all five starters back after beating Vandy in the first round of last year’s Big Dance.

When UT has lost, it’s not as if it is going down against soft competition. The Vols played one of the country’s most formidable non-conference slates. They have losses against solid squads like Gonzaga (twice), Memphis, Kansas, Kentucky and LSU, so that will be looked upon favorably by the committee come Selection Sunday.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Tennessee as a 2 ½-point favorite with a total of 153. LVSC’s four college basketball oddsmakers had varying opinions for this contest. For instance, Kenny White had the Gators as three-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 145. On the other hand, John “The Coach” Harper had the total at 153, while Mike Seba made the tally 158.

Tip-off at Thompson-Boling Arena is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--The ‘over’ is 9-8 overall for UT, 5-4 in its home games. Howver, the ‘under’ has cashed in three of the last four games for the Vols.

--The ‘under’ is 7-6 overall for UF, but the ‘over’ has cashed in its last two contests.

--After Wednesday’s loss to LSU, Pearl told The Tennesseean, “You hate to rank disappointments, but I think this one probably ranks right at the top.”

--Pearl has taken UT to the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons of his tenure in Knoxville. The Vols advanced to the second round three years ago, and they have been to the Sweet 16 in back-to-back campaigns.

--Although Florida has won a pair of national titles in the last three years, Tennessee has surprisingly dominated UF over that span. In fact, Pearl has a 5-1 record both SU and ATS in six head-to-head meetings against Donovan.

--The ‘over’ has cashed in each of the last four UT-UF encounters.

--On the UF-UT matchup, Parsons told GatorBait.net, "Saturday is huge. Tennessee is a great team. They're explosive, they're athletic and they're real tough to play at home. We have to come in there with the right mindset and keep playing aggressive and keep staying focused on the task."

--What’s wrong with Vandy’s A.J. Ogilvy? The sophomore center from Australia is still averaging 14.4 points per game, but he’s failed to score in double figures in three straight. Ogilvy had as many points (three) as turnovers (three) in Wednesday’s loss at South Carolina. Vandy, which has failed to cover in four consecutive games, plays at Auburn on Saturday as a 6 ½-point underdog.

What to watch Saturday: College basketball bettors' TV guide
By MATT SEVERANCE

Notre Dame at Pittsburgh (noon, ESPN)

The Irish almost certainly won't be ranked when the next polls are released Monday. They’ve lost four games in a row – all to ranked teams – and now have No. 3 Pittsburgh in the batter’s box. A lack of offense, outside of Luke Harangody, has been the culprit.

Guard Kyle McAlarney is averaging just 9.0 points on 22.2 percent shooting in his last two games and Notre Dame is shooting 37 percent during the losing streak. The Irish scored at least 80 points in 10 Big East games last season but have done it just once so far.

Coach Mike Brey put his team through two-a-day practices this week, calling them “improvement sessions.”

“I just think we’ve got to think short term and day to day, trying to get a league win right now,” Brey said to Blue and Gold Illustrated. “I just think that’s the way I’ve addressed it and we’ve talked about it.”

Wake Forest at Georgia Tech (noon, ESPN360/Raycom)

If things fall right, the Deacons could be back at No. 1 next week after knocking off current No. 1 Duke on Wednesday. It's a definite step down in competition for Wake as the Jackets are the only winless team in ACC play.

A six-game losing streak in the ACC is the longest for the Yellow Jackets since 2005-06 when they lost eight straight. But Tech won both of last season's meetings against the Deacons.

West Virginia at Louisville (noon, ESPN360/Big East Network)

The No. 7 Cardinals are winners of eight in a row and sit atop the Big East with Marquette. In conference games UL leads the Big East in scoring defense (60.4 points per game), field goal percentage defense (.388) and steals (9.0 per game).

The Cards generally use pressure defense and then shift to a 2-3 zone when the opposing team gets into the frontcourt.

"I think they'll just try to wear us down with it," WVU coach Bob Huggins said of the pressure to the Charleston Daily Herald. "(And) they have incredible size. When they're in the 2-3, they stretch from sideline to sideline."

UL beat WVU in January 2008 by 9 in Morgantown and leads the series 5-2 overall, including 2-1 in Louisville.

Michigan at Purdue (1 p.m., CBS regional)

The Big Ten preseason favorite Boilermakers are now playing like it with wins in their last five contests in the conference to put a little pressure on first-place Michigan State.

Michigan won't have freshman guard Zack Novak, who was suspended one game for his flagrant foul and subsequent ejection in a loss to Ohio State on Wednesday, the Wolverines' fourth defeat in five games. Novak is the team's fourth-leading scorer and has started nine games.

Georgetown at Marquette (2 p.m. ESPN360/Big East Network)

The Hoyas also likely will drop out of the next polls as they have dropped four straight games heading into Saturday's matchup with Marquette.

GU will likely be without leading scorer DaJuan Summers (14.7 ppg), one of two upperclassmen in the starting lineup. Summers is expected to sit because of a foot injury suffered in Wednesday's loss to Cincinnati.

“We’re in a situation now, with DaJuan out, that we’re going to have all freshmen and sophomores on the court for significant minutes,” GU coach John Thompson III said to reporters. “[Experience] is a luxury that we don’t have.”

Stanford at UCLA (3:30 p.m., ABC regional)

The seniors on the Stanford roster are now 0-9 at the Los Angeles schools following Thursday's setback to Southern Cal, 70-69. That was the Cardinal's fourth loss in the past six games, with three coming by just a point. There was good news in the loss to USC as point guard Mitch Johnson returned after missing two games due to a bruised calf. He had 10 points in 36 minutes against the Trojans.

The Cardinal have beaten just four teams with a winning record, and none of the victories were on the road. Only one came against a team (Cal) with a winning mark in the Pac-10.

UCLA has won four in a row in this series and six of seven.

Providence at Connecticut (4 p.m., ESPN360/Big East Network)

This sets up as a potential trap with Connecticut poised to take over the No. 1 ranking and with a quick turnaround game at No. 7 Louisville looming on Monday.

The Friars, at 6-2 in conference, are the surprise of the Big East so far. Providence has won four straight games at UConn (Hartford or on campus) and three in a row in this series overall. The Huskies haven't beaten the Friars in Storrs since Feb. 6, 1996.

"It's payback,” Huskies senior Jeff Adrien said to reporters. “It's one of the teams we haven't beaten since my freshman year and we have to get it. We can't overlook Providence."

Florida at Tennessee (9 p.m. ESPN)

You have to count the Vols among the nation's disappointments, with UT having lost two straight games (both at home) to fall to 12-7 overall and 3-2 in the watered-down SEC. Tennessee has two good frontcourt players in Wayne Chism and Tyler Smith, but the guards haven't been stepping up.

“We get it in the block all the time, and we get it in the block to good players,” UT coach Bruce Pearl said to reporters. “But we’ve got to get it inside-out some, because it is rough down there and it’s hard to score in there.”

ESPN College Gameday will be at Thompson-Boling Arena, where UT has lost four of its past five games. But the Vols have won three straight and seven of nine against Billy Donovan's club, which leads the SEC East. Thirteen of the past 18 meetings have been decided by 10 points or less.

West Virginia (15-5, 7-10 ATS) at (7) Louisville (16-3, 12-7 ATS)

Louisville, one of the hottest teams in the country, gears up for a Freedom Hall battle against Big East foe West Virginia, which has won four of its last five.

The Cardinals flattened South Florida 80-54 Wednesday night as a heavy 16½-point home chalk, posting their eighth consecutive SU victory while moving to 7-0 SU and ATS in Big East play. Despite playing in the loaded Big East, Louisville has won four of its last five games by double digits – including a home win over Notre Dame and a win at Syracuse – and has averaged 76.2 ppg in that span, while allowing just 61.2.

The Mountaineers ripped St. John’s 75-52 as an 18½-point home favorite Wednesday, bouncing back from Sunday’s 79-67 home loss to Pittsburgh as a one-point chalk. Three of West Virginia’s last four victories have been by double digits, with the lone exception a 62-59 home win over South Florida, and the Mountaineers are averaging 73.2 ppg in their last five outings, while giving up 64.8.

Louisville is 3-1 SU and 3-0-1 ATS in four meetings with West Virginia, winning and cashing each of the past two seasons, including a 63-54 home win last January as a two-point favorite.

The Cardinals sport several positive ATS streaks, including 7-0 after a SU win, 20-8 after a pointspread victory, 4-0 against winning teams, 9-3 on Saturday, 38-14-2 in the Big East and 10-4 after a SU win of more than 20 points. The Mountaineers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a win of more than 20 points, but they are also 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five after a spread-cover.

The under for Louisville is on streaks of 18-8-1 at home, 4-1 on Saturday and 23-11-1 coming off a SU win, and the under is 6-2 in West Virginia’s last eight Saturday tilts.

ATS ADVANTAGE: LOUISVILLE and UNDER

Notre Dame (12-7, 4-9 ATS) at (3) Pittsburgh (18-2, 8-6-1 ATS)

Freefalling Notre Dame aims to halt a four-game losing skid, traveling to the Petersen Events Center to face Pittsburgh, which will look to bounce back from just its second loss of the year.

The Fighting Irish lost to No. 11 Marquette 71-64 Monday night as a 2½-point home favorite, their second consecutive home loss after a 45-game winning streak in South Bend. Notre Dame, now on an 0-4 SU and 0-5 ATS slide, has faced four ranked teams in a row (all in the Big East), averaging just 68 ppg – 10 points below its season average – while giving up 80 ppg, including road losses of 87-73 at Louisville in overtime and 93-74 at Syracuse two Saturdays ago.

Pittsburgh stumbled at Villanova 67-57 Wednesday laying 2½ points, halting a two-game SU and ATS uptick following the Panthers’ first loss of the year, a 69-63 setback at Louisville catching two points. Pitt has played three Big East home games thus far and has dominated all three, winning by an average score of 81-63, and for the season, the Panthers are 12-0 at home, shooting a solid 50.1 percent on their home floor while allowing just 39.3 percent from their opponents.

Notre Dame is 3-1 ATS (1-3 SU) in the last four clashes with the Panthers, winning 82-70 last February as a 4½-point home chalk. Additionally, the Irish are 5-1 ATS on their last six trips to Pittsburgh, and the road team is on a 5-1 ATS run in this rivalry.

Aside from those numbers, the Fighting Irish are on nothing but negative ATS streaks, including 0-5 in Big East action, 1-4 on the road, 0-6 on Saturday, 0-4 against teams with a win percentage above .600, 0-4 after a non-cover. The Panthers, meanwhile, are on ATS surges of 6-1 after a non-cover and 15-7-1 following a SU loss.

The over for Notre Dame is on rolls of 5-1 on the road, 4-0 against winning teams, 18-7 in conference play and 16-7 against teams with a win percentage greater than .600. The under has hit in Pitt’s last four Saturday starts, but the over is on runs for the Panthers of 11-4 at home, 13-5 in Big East action, 4-0 against winning teams and 10-1 at home versus teams with a losing road record. Finally, the total has gone high in each of the last four contests in this series.

ATS ADVANTAGE: PITTSBURGH and OVER

Michigan (14-7, 8-7-1 ATS) at (16) Purdue (16-4, 8-8 ATS)

After picking up a pair of road wins, surging Purdue returns home to take on Michigan in a Big Ten contest at Mackey Arena.

The Boilermakers followed up their 70-62 win at then-No. 21 Minnesota by squeaking past Wisconsin 64-63 Tuesday night, cashing as one-point underdogs in both contests to improve to 5-0 SU (4-1 ATS) in their last five starts. Purdue has shot 48.5 percent from the floor during the five-game winning streak, including an eye-catching 47.2 percent from 3-point range, and its defense has been just as impressive, yielding a stifling 35.8 percent shooting.

The Wolverines got bounced by Ohio State 72-54 Wednesday as a four-point road pup and are now 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five outings, following a 3-1 SU start in Big Ten play (2-2 ATS). Michigan has been held under 60 points in four of its last five games, averaging just 57.8 ppg in that stretch – well off its season mark of 69.0 – while giving up 67.0 ppg.

Purdue is on a 7-2 ATS roll (6-3 SU) in the last eight meetings in this rivalry, including a 72-58 road win last March as a 5½-point favorite, and the Boilermakers are 5-2 ATS in the last seven clashes with the Wolverines at Mackey Arena.

The Boilermakers are on a handful of ATS streaks, including 8-2 in Saturday games, 4-1 against winning teams, 26-9-1 inside the Big Ten and 20-9-1 after a spread-cover. The Wolverines have cashed in five of their last seven Saturday contests, but they are on an 11-27-2 ATS plunge on the road.

The over for Purdue is on runs of 4-0 overall (all in Big Ten play), 5-0 after a SU win and 7-0 after an ATS triumph. On the flip side, the under for Michigan is on tears of 4-1-1 overall (all in Big Ten play), 4-0 against winning teams, 10-2-1 on the highway and 7-3-1 after a SU loss, and in this rivalry, the total has stayed low in the last four meetings.

ATS ADVANTAGE: PURDUE

Houston (12-6, 8-6-1 ATS) at (18) Memphis (17-3, 12-7 ATS)

Scorching-hot Memphis goes after its 12th straight victory when it takes on Conference USA rival Houston at the Pyramid.

The Tigers ripped East Carolina 85-64 as a 16-point road chalk Wednesday, which followed their 54-52 win at SEC power Tennessee catching three points last Saturday. Memphis has cashed in its last four games and is 8-2 ATS in lined contests during its 11-game winning streak. The Tigers have steamrolled opponents at home all season, going 11-0 SU, winning by an average final score of 80.8-58.2 and shooting 45.1 percent at the Pyramid, while allowing opponents to hit at just a 35.3 percent clip.

The Cougars lost to Texas-El Paso 62-55 as a five-point home chalk Wednesday for their second consecutive SU and ATS setback, and they’ve followed a three-game win streak by going 1-3 SU and ATS. Houston is getting outscored on the road by about a bucket per game this season (79.5-77.7) and is shooting just 38.3 percent from the field on the highway, including a dismal 28.9 percent from three-point range.

Memphis has won its last seven contests against Houston but is just 3-4 ATS in those games, splitting the cash in two meetings last season. Houston is on a 10-1 ATS tear at the Pyramid and is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings overall, and the road team is a stellar 16-2 ATS in the last 18 clashes.

The Tigers are on ATS upticks of 6-0 at home, 4-0 after a SU win, 5-1 after a spread-cover, 6-2 against winning teams and 5-2 in Conference USA play. The Cougars are on ATS runs of 4-1 after a SU loss and 4-1 after an ATS setback, but they are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 conference affairs.

The under for Memphis is on streaks of 8-3 overall, 5-2 at home 6-1 against winning teams, 7-2 inside the conference, 8-3 after a spread-cover and 26-10 after a SU win of more than 20 points. In addition, the under is on a 9-1 run for Houston against winning teams, and in this rivalry, the under is on rolls of 9-1 overall and 6-0 in Memphis. However, the over for Houston is on stretches of 4-1 overall, 4-0 on the highway and 4-0 on the road against teams with a winning home mark.

ATS ADVANTAGE: MEMPHIS

(25) Georgetown (12-7, 6-8-1 ATS) at (8) Marquette (18-2, 8-6-1 ATS)

Marquette, which along with Louisville remains unbeaten in Big East Conference play, takes on a sliding Georgetown squad at the Bradley Center.

The Golden Eagles topped Notre Dame 71-64 Monday night as a 2½-point road pup for their 10th consecutive SU win (6-2-1 ATS in lined games) and their 13th victory in the last 14 games. Marquette has been racking up points throughout the 10-game surge, breaking 70 nine times, including three games in the 80s and two in the 90s. In their last five outings, all in conference play, Marquette bested opponents by an average of more than 10 ppg (79.4-69.0).

The Hoyas fell to Cincinnati 65-57 Wednesday as a 5½-point road ‘dog for their fourth loss in a row, including three consecutive SU and ATS setbacks to Big East foes. For the season, Georgetown has averaged 71.9 ppg and given up 62.7 ppg, but the Hoyas have broken 60 just once in the last four games, getting outscored by nearly 10 ppg (70.25-60.5).

Georgetown is 3-1 SU in the four meetings of this short-lived rivalry, dating to the 2005-06 season. The Hoyas have won the last three (2-0-1 ATS), including a 70-68 overtime victory as a four-point underdog last March in Milwaukee.

The Golden Eagles are on ATS binges of 6-2 overall, 13-5 in the Big East, 6-0 against teams with a win percentage above .600 and 6-2 after a SU win. Conversely, the Hoyas are on a bundle of ATS purges, including 1-6-1 overall, 0-5 after a SU loss, 1-4 after a pointspread setback, 1-6 in conference action, 1-5-1 against winning teams and 6-14-1 on Saturday.

The over for Marquette is on runs of 20-8 on Saturday and 5-1 after an ATS win, and the over is 5-1 in Georgetown last six on Saturday. But the under for the Hoyas is on streaks of 41-20 against Big East foes, 20-8 on the highway, 5-1 on the road against teams with a winning home record and 35-16-1 after a SU loss.

ATS ADVANTAGE: MARQUETTE

South Carolina (15-4, 6-7-1 ATS) at (24) Kentucky (16-5, 10-5-1 ATS)

Kentucky aims to bounce back from an upset loss on the road when it returns to Rupp Arena for an SEC contest against South Carolina.

The Wildcats fell at Mississippi 85-80 as a 9½-point road chalk Tuesday, halting a five-game SU and 4-1 ATS surge overall and a 3-0 SU and ATS roll on the road. Since a stunning home upset loss to Virginia Military Institute in its season opener, Kentucky has gone 12-1 at Rupp (5-3 ATS in lined games). For the season, the Wildcats have averaged 84.1 ppg at home and given up just 64.2, shooting nearly 15 percentage points better than their opponents (51.0-36.5).

The Gamecocks dropped Vanderbilt 86-76 as a six-point chalk Wednesday for their third consecutive win (1-1-1 ATS), all at home following road losses to LSU and Tennessee. South Carolina has been pretty competitive in its five road games this year (including one at a neutral site), averaging 79.0 ppg on 48.2 percent shooting, including a solid 40 percent from three-point range. However, the Gamecocks give up 77.2 ppg on 50.2 percent shooting on the highway.

Kentucky has won four in a row (3-1 ATS) and six of the last seven in this rivalry (4-3 ATS), but South Carolina is 4-1 ATS on its last five trips to Lexington. Also, the road team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven clashes, and the underdog has covered in seven of the last nine contests overall.

The Wildcats are on a plethora of positive pointspread streaks, including 9-3 overall, 5-2 at home, 14-6 in the SEC, 9-1 after a non-cover, 4-1 on Saturday, 7-2 against winning teams and 7-3 after a SU loss. The Gamecocks are just 2-5 ATS in their last seven games following a SU win, but they are otherwise on spread-covering rolls of 5-2-1 in the SEC, 35-16 in their last 51 road affairs and 30-8 on the road against teams with a winning home mark.

The under is 9-3 in Kentucky’s last 12 Saturday starts and 13-5 in its last 18 conference tilts, but the over for the Wildcats is on a 12-2 tear against winning teams, and the over for South Carolina is on stretches of 14-2 against winning teams, 5-1 on the highway and 8-3 after a SU win. Finally, the total has cleared the posted price in 15 of the last 17 meetings in this rivalry and is 6-1 in the last seven clashes in Lexington.

ATS ADVANTAGE: KENTUCKY and OVER

Stanford (13-5, 13-4 ATS) at (17) UCLA (16-4, 9-10 ATS)

UCLA looks to knock off Stanford for the fifth straight time when it welcomes the Cardinal to Pauley Pavilion for a Pac-10 clash.

The Bruins have split their last four games, but they’re coming off Thursday’s 81-66 rout of Cal, easily cashing as a 10-point favorite to end an 0-3 ATS slide. All five UCLA starters scored in double figures and the Bruins shot a sizzling 55 percent from the field in posting their second-highest point total in Pac-10 play. One game after allowing a season-high 86 points in a loss at Washington, Ben Howland’s squad got back to its defensive ways and has now held 16 of 20 opponents to 66 points or less, including five of the last six.

Stanford has lost two in a row and four of its last five, including Thursday’s heartbreaking 70-69 loss at USC, as Lawrence Hill’s game-winning jump shot as time expired went in and out. The Cardinal lost their third one-point decision in their last six games, but they did cover as a 5½-point underdog, improving to 6-1 ATS in their last seven, including 3-0 ATS on the road, all in conference.

The Cardinal are just 3-5 in the Pac-10, but 6-2 ATS, while UCLA is 6-2 in league play (4-4 ATS).

UCLA is 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings with Stanford, including 4-0 (3-1 ATS) in the last four contests. Last season, the Bruins knocked off the Cardinal three times, prevailing 76-67 as a one-point road underdog, 77-67 in overtime as an 8½-point home chalk and 67-64 in the Pac-10 tournament championship game, coming up just short as a 3½-point favorite. However, Stanford has cashed in seven of the last 10 meetings in Los Angeles.

Since failing to cover in their first game of the season, the Cardinal have gone 13-3 ATS, including 5-0 ATS on the road, 3-0 as an underdog and 6-0 ATS after a SU loss. Stanford is also 4-1 ATS in its last five Saturday contests and 21-8 ATS in its last 29 versus winning teams. UCLA is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 against winning teams, but 3-7 ATS in its last 10 on Saturday and 1-5 ATS in its last six after a spread-cover.

For the Bruins, the over is on streaks of 3-0 overall (all in Pac-10 play), 7-0 against winning teams and 10-4 on Saturday. For Stanford, the over is on stretches of 14-5 in Pac-10 play, 11-2 on the road and 6-0 against winning teams. Lastly, the over has hit in each of the last six meetings between these schools, and eight of the last 10 clashes in Los Angeles have topped the total.

ATS ADVANTAGE: STANFORD and OVER

(23) Washington (15-5, 11-7 ATS) at (14) Arizona State (16-4, 10-6 ATS)

Two teams coming off disappointing upset losses on Thursday get together at Wells-Fargo Arena in the desert, with Arizona State hosting Washington.

The Sun Devils went off as an 11-point home chalk against Washington State on Thursday, only to fall 65-55 to end a modest two-game SU and ATS run and fall to 5-3 SU and ATS in conference Arizona State’s offense has been virtually nonexistent lately, averaging only 54.5 ppg while shooting just 36.4 percent over the past four contests. On the bright side, the Sun Devils are giving up just 54.5 ppg on 38.4 percent shooting in their last six outings, going 4-2 SU and ATS during this stretch.

Washington had a four-game winning streak (3-1 ATS) halted in Thursday’s 106-97 loss at Arizona as a one-point road chalk, moving to 6-2 in the Pac-10 (4-4 ATS). The Huskies, who hadn’t scored or given up more than 88 points all year, allowed Arizona to shoot 52 percent from the field, including 9-for-20 from three-point range. The Huskies are averaging 85.6 ppg in their last seven contests, all against Pac-10 foes, and they’ve scored more than 80 points in 11 of their last 14 contests.

These teams split their two meetings last year, with Washington taking a 72-61 home win as a 5½-point road underdog and ASU getting revenge with a 77-63 victory as a five-point pup in Seattle, snapping an 11-game SU losing skid in this rivalry. The Huskies are 5-0 SU and ATS in their last five visits to Tempe, and the visitor has cashed in five of the last six head-to-head battles.

The SU winner is 9-0 ATS in Arizona State’s last nine contests, including 8-0 ATS in Pac-10 action, and the winner has cashed in 14 of Washington’s 18 lined games this season. Also, the winner is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in this rivalry.

Washington is on positive pointspread streaks of 4-1 on the highway, 4-0 after a SU loss, 5-1 after a non-cover and 5-1 on Saturday, but it has failed to cover in four of its last five against winning teams. The Sun Devils carry positive ATS runs 5-2 at home, 8-3-1 against the Pac-10, 6-1 after a SU loss, 8-0 after a non-cover, 5-1 when playing on Saturday and 7-3 as a favorite of three points or more.

The Huskies have topped the total in seven straight games overall and the “over” is on further runs for the team of 13-3 against league foes, 9-2 on the road, 11-2 on Saturday and 4-0 after a non-cover. Conversely, ASU is on “under” stretches of 5-1 overall, 4-1 against winning teams and 20-8 after an outright defeat. Lastly, four of the last five series meetings have stayed under the total.

Baylor (15-5, 6-6 ATS) at Missouri (17-4, 7-7 ATS)

Free-falling Baylor will try to get back on track when it pays a visit to Mizzou Arena for Big 12 showdown with Missouri.

The Bears have lost two in a row and four of their last seven, going 2-5 ATS during this stretch. On Tuesday, Baylor gave No. 11 Texas a good fight but still came up short 78-72 as a 1½-point home favorite. While the Bears have scored at least 72 points in every game this season, they’ve surrendered 82.8 ppg on 46.6 percent shooting in their last five, giving up 78 or more in four of those contests.

The Tigers started the Big 12 season with a 56-51 loss at Nebraska, then ripped off four straight conference victories (averaging 94.5 ppg in the process). However, the winning streak ended in Wednesday’s ugly 88-72 loss at Kansas State as a three-point road chalk. Missouri has allowed 88, 86 and 95 points in its last three games after giving up an average of just 54.8 ppg in their previous four contests.

Baylor has won the last two meetings in this rivalry, including last year’s 100-89 victory. The Bears covered as a five-point home favorite in that contest, improving to 8-0 ATS in the last eight series clashes, including 4-0 ATS when visiting Columbus and 7-1 ATS as an underdog.

Although Baylor has failed to cash in five of its last seven, it is 14-6 ATS in its last 20 road games, 5-2 ATS in its last seven on Saturday and 3-1 ATS as an underdog this year. The Tigers are mired in a slew of pointspread funks, including 9-19 overall, 15-37-1 in the Big 12, 17-35-1 on Saturday, 1-4 as a single-digit favorite, 5-12 against winning teams and 2-7 after a non-cover.

Both teams average more than 80 points per game, so it’s no surprise that the “over” is on streaks of 23-7 for Baylor overall, 13-3 for Baylor on the road, 38-16 for Baylor in Big 12 play, 20-6 for Baylor on Saturday, 10-2 for Baylor after a SU loss, 4-1 for the Tigers overall, 7-3 for the Tigers at home and 9-3 for the Tigers after a non-cover. Also, the last two meetings in this rivalry have topped the total.

ATS ADVANTAGE: BAYLOR and OVER

Florida (18-3, 6-7-1 ATS) at Tennessee (12-7, 7-9-1 ATS)

Two SEC rivals headed in completely different directions get together at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, with streaking Florida taking on slumping Tennessee in a prime-time matchup.

The Gators are coming off a pair of blowout wins over Vanderbilt (94-69 as a one-point road favorite) and Georgia (83-57 as a 16-point home chalk). Florida is 12-1 in its last 13 games, with nine of those wins coming by double digits, and the lone loss was a buzzer-beating 70-69 setback at South Carolina as a one-point underdog. Also, Billy Donovan’s squad is 4-0-1 ATS in its last five games after starting the season 2-7 against the number. The Gators have held 10 straight opponents to 70 points or less while scoring 68 points or more in 13 consecutive contests.

Tennessee, once ranked in the Top 25, has lost two in a row and five of its last eight, going 2-6 ATS during this slide. The Vols followed up last Saturday’s 54-52 loss to rival Memphis as a three-point home favorite with Wednesday’s 79-73 loss to LSU as a 7½-point home chalk. Tennessee has lost four of its last five at Thompson-Boling Arena (0-5 ATS) after previously running off 37 consecutive home victories.

Florida is 5-1 in the SEC (4-0-1 ATS), including 2-1 on the road (2-0-1 ATS). Tennessee is just 3-2 in league play (2-3 ATS), including 2-2 SU and ATS at home.

The Vols have won three in a row (3-0 ATS) and five of the last six (5-1 ATS) in this rivalry. Last year in Knoxville, Tennessee smoked the Gators 104-82 as a 9½-point home chalk, their second straight double-digit home win over Florida. The Vols are 6-1 in the last seven matchups at home, and the SU winner has covered the spread in each of the last 10 head-to-head battles.

In addition to its 4-0-1 overall ATS run, Florida is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six road games and 15-6-1 ATS in its last 22 after a non-cover. The Vols’ pointspread funks include 0-5 at home, 1-4 on Saturday, 2-5 against the SEC and 2-5 after a SU loss.

The last four meetings in this series have gone over the total, and the over for Tennessee is on stretches of 5-2 in SEC action, 5-2 on Saturday and 4-0 against winning teams. On the flip side, the Gators are on “under” streaks of 5-2 overall, 4-1 on the road, 5-0 on Saturday, 18-6-1 after a SU victory and 9-2 after a victory of more than 20 points.

College Basketball Bettor’s Weekend Outlook
Doug Upstone

How good is Florida, really? That question should start to be answered in their prime time matchup with Tennessee. Having won 18 of first 21 games, the talent is evident and a convincing win in hostile environment might be what bettors need to see, to back the Gators down the stretch. (Free Foxsheet for this SEC matchup) Notre Dame will play their fifth straight ranked team and Pitt is sure to be angry off a loss. Memphis is home trying to extend long C-USA winning streak and UCLA will try to change their luck at home against Stanford, who has had success at Pauley Pavilion. North Carolina and N.C. State used to be the game in the ACC, until Duke came along. The Wolfpack have a huge challenge ahead of them, even at home. On Super Bowl Sunday, a couple of physical Big Ten teams will go at it. Check Betmania.com for the last numbers on these contests.

Notre Dame at Pittsburgh 12:00ET, ESPN

Points in the paint - this will be the term that will describe the winner of this Big East matchup. Pittsburgh (18-2, 9-6 ATS) has two space-eaters in Tyrell Biggs and DeJuan Blair, who can fill up a lane all by themselves and they will face Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody and his vast array to shots, heaves and tosses. Last season, the Fighting Irish handled the Panthers 82-70, holding Pittsburgh to 40 percent shooting. The Irish did a great job on the boards outrebounding Pitt by eight and the Panthers didn’t help themselves with 11 for 18 from the free throw line.

Jamie Dixon’s club is steadier this season with Levance Fields back running the point and Sam Young is more than just a jump shooter for team that is 17-7 ATS in January the last two years. The loss to Villanova hurt, however Dixon’s teams have through the years not dwelled on losses.

Notre Dame (12-7, 5-9 ATS) looked like Top 10 material back in Maui in November, however have become stagnant since league play opened and have lost four in a row. The lack of bench means heavy minutes for starters and the defensive prowess of last year has evaporated with teams shooting 43 percent. Coach Mike Brey’s club is 14-5 ATS in road games versus defensive teams with shooting percentage defense of 39 or less percent after 15 or more games on the year.

Houston at Memphis 1:00ET, CBSC

Conference-USA has reclined back into being a nice, lower level league among the heavyweights with Memphis (17-3, 11-7-1 ATS) no longer considered a national championship threat this season. Still it does leave some intriguing confrontations to consider like Houston (12-6, 9-6 ATS) visiting one of the barbeque hubs. The Cougars have found a combination of players that are 10-4 as starters, with ample firepower, averaging over 78 points a game. Scoring is no issue, but coach Tom Penders has to lean on his squad to play more defense as the shoot-outs against the better teams has led to defeats. Houston is 16-6 ATS on the road versus teams outscoring opponents by eight or points a game after 15 or more played.

Memphis has now won 48 straight C-USA contests and it might be getting harder for this year’s opponents to stop the streak. Freshman Tyreke Evans has moved to point guard and the offense is running smoother. Antonio Anderson is more comfortable in his role in the offense and his defense is as asphyxiating as ever. If there is one area the Tigers have fallen visibly, it is in rebounding, not having a big guy like Joey Dorsey to clean out the lane. The oddsmakers’ numbers this season have been more realistic and Memphis is 7-1 ATS as a home favorite of 10 or more points this season.Memphis is 15-2 and 10-6-1 ATS as a favorite, winning by 16.9 points per game.

North Carolina at N.C. State 3:30, ABC

North Carolina State (11-7, 8-5-1 ATS) has a problem preparing for in-state rival North Carolina and it is not something easily cured. The Wolfpack has been getting killed on the boards. They have been out-rebounded in four of their last five ACC games and really crushed in last two, by 15 boards in overtime escape against Miami and by 19 in loss at Boston College. In the loss to the Eagles, they gave up 15 offensive rebounds. The Tar Heels have plenty of athletes to climb on the boards, making it imperative the N.C. State to at least create a stalemate on the glass. The Wolfpack is 10-2 and 5-3 ATS at home.

North Carolina (18-2, 9-10 ATS) almost was administered the five finger death punch by Florida State, but survived 80-77 in Tallahassee. The Tar Heels had problems finding open shots in the second half, scoring just nine field goals after the intermission. The drop in intensity allowed the Seminoles to score 33 points off North Carolina turnovers. Expect Tyler Hansbrough to come to play after scoring only eight points, breaking his streak of 55 consecutive games in double digits. The Tar Heels are 9-1 and 6-4 ATS away from Chapel Hill this season.North Carolina is 8-3 SU and ATS in Raleigh since 1997.

Stanford at UCLA 3:30ET, ABC

Former Duke assistant Johnny Dawkins was patient and waited for the right opportunity to leave the nest and gravitated towards a university that had similar values. The move has paid off thus far with Stanford (13-5, 13-4 ATS) playing good basketball despite the loss of the Lopez twins. Forward Lawrence Hill and guard Anthony Goods have been the bell-cows which Dawkins has leaned on. The win against rival Cal was imperative after losing twice in the State of Washington; however losing to Oregon State at home again raises questions. The Cardinal is 9-1 ATS on the January road this last two years, after losing to USC by a single point as six point underdogs.

It isn’t that UCLA (16-4, 9-10 ATS) is a bad team, their not, they just can be befuddling at times and give uneven efforts. Josh Shipp is a good shooter, but will let poor fundamentals undermine his effectiveness and be streakier than necessary. Darren Collison works hard to set-up teammates and doesn’t look for his shot often enough. One real positive has been Michael Roll settling nicely into his sixth-man role and has scored 10 or more points often since Pac-10 play resumed. The impressive 81-66 win over Cal, showed what UCLA is capable of. The Bruins are 11-1 and 5-6 ATS at Pauley Pavilion this year.Amazingly, Stanford is 8-3 SU and ATS at UCLA recently.

Florida at Tennessee 9:00ET, ESPN

This is the third of three very demanding tilts for Tennessee (12-7, 7-8-2 ATS) still trying to find defensive identity. The Vols floundered most of the early part of January and the players were recalcitrant to coach Bruce Pearl’s heedings, but changes were made in schemes and the players did some soul-searching among themselves. If there is a quality about Pearl’s teams, they need to resemble him, full of swagger. Tennessee is built around the talents of Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism. They are the starters and finishers for Orange and White, nevertheless the rest of the players have to contribute in the other parts of the game for the Volunteers to be at their best. They are 21-11 ATS as a home favorite or pick, however that record is quickly falling with four home losses in Knoxville this season.

Can a team with a solid a record as Florida at 18-3 (7-7 ATS) still be a mystery? The answer is yes. Much like the polling process in Florida, receiving the tabulations on the Gators has been slow to come by. Results are being formulated by SEC play and contests like this at Knoxville create a greater understanding. Nobody is wondering about Nick Calathes and his abilities and answers the critics. "We don't mind the doubters,” the sophomore point guard said. “We’re just looking to get better every day in practice." Even with last Sunday’s convincing thumping at Vanderbilt; the Gators are 5-3 and 3-4 ATS away from home.Florida is 3-8 and 4-7 ATS at Tennessee.
