Saturday's Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards

Bettors have four bowl games to wager on in college football Saturday, but that’s certainly not all that’s on the agenda. Gamblers also have the best card of college hoops that we’ve seen all year, including enticing matchups like Xavier-Duke, UConn-Gonzaga and Davidson-Purdue. Let’s take a look at those contests and more.

**Xavier vs. Duke**

--These teams will square off in East Rutherford, NJ. Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Duke (9-1 straight up, 5-4 against the spread) as an eight-point favorite.

--Xavier (9-0 SU, 4-4 ATS) is undefeated to date and not because of a cupcake schedule. The Muskateers already have quality wins over teams like Va. Tech, Missouri, Memphis and Cincinnati. We should also mention that all four of those victories were away from home with three coming on neutral courts.

--Sean Miller’s squad is coming off a 76-66 win at Cincinnati last Saturday. The Muskateers easily hooked up their backers as two-point road favorites. Derek Brown had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the winners, while C.J. Anderson finished with 17 points and 11 boards.

--Duke’s only loss of the season came on Dec. 6 when Michigan captured an 81-73 win as a 9 ½-point home underdog. Since then, the Blue Devils have played just once while taking final exams. They were back in action Monday, collecting a 99-56 home win over UNC-Asheville in a non-lined affair.

--Duke has four players scoring in double figures led by sophomore forward Kyle Singler, who averages 16.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Junior guard Jon Scheyer is scoring at a 13.3 PPG clip.

--Xavier has only been an underdog once this season, beating Memphis 63-58 as a five-point ‘dog. As for Duke, it has only been a single-digit favorite once in the aforementioned loss to Michigan. The Blue Devils have been double-digit favorites in every other game except one, a 76-60 win over Purdue as two-point ‘dogs.

--The ‘over’ has hit in three consecutive games for the Muskateers. Meanwhile, Duke has seen the ‘under’ go 5-4 overall.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Eastern on CBS.

**Connecticut vs. Gonzaga**

--LVSC opened Gonzaga (8-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) as a two-point favorite for this contest that’ll be played at Key Arena in Seattle.

--UConn (9-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) has been beating up on cupcake foes for the most part this year, but we should mention victories over Wisconsin (76-57) and Miami (76-63) on a neutral floor in the Virgin Islands.

--Mark Few’s team suffered its first loss of the season last Sunday in Phoenix, where Arizona won 69-64 in a mild upset. Gonzaga took the outright defeat as a six-point favorite. The Bulldogs bounced back Tuesday by blasting Texas Southern 84-42 in a non-lined matchup.

--Few probably has his deepest and most talented team, and we’re talking about a program that has been to 10 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Six players are averaging at least 8.9 points per game.

--Senior guard Jeremy Pargo is the heart and soul of Gonzaga’s squad. He averages 8.9 PPG and is dishing out a team-high 7.6 assists per game. Senior center Josh Heytvelt has been steady all year, scoring a team-high 15.7 PPG and also pulling down 6.2 RPG.

--UConn is led by junior center Hasheem Thabeet, who is averaging 14.9 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. Thabeet is one of the country’s premier shot blockers, rejecting 3.8 shots per game.

--These teams have met three times since an epic battle in the Elite Eight of the 1999 NCAA Tournament, when UConn beat Gonzaga 67-62 en route to winning the national championship. However, Casey Calvary and Co. covered the spread as 10 ½-point underdogs. The schools have split a pair of meetings since then, but Gonzaga has taken the cash both times. The Bulldogs won an 85-82 decision last year as 5 ½-point underdogs in a game played in Boston. Back in 2005 at the Maui Classic, UConn won by a 65-63 count as a five-point ‘chalk.’

--The ‘under’ is 6-1 overall for Gonzaga, while totals have been a wash in UConn’s four lined games.

**Syracuse at Memphis**

--LVSC opened Memphis (6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS) as an eight-point favorite.

--If you were surprised to see Syracuse (10-1 SU, 3-5 ATS) as such a healthy underdog, keep in mind that junior guard Eric Devendorf will not play after being suspended indefinitely by the school for an incident with a female last month. Devendorf, who went down early last year with a season-ending knee injury, was playing extremely well, averaging 13.9 points and 3.4 assists per game.

--John Calipari’s team has a pair of losses to date. The Tigers dropped a heartbreaker at Georgetown last week, losing 79-70 in overtime. They failed to cover the number as six-point ‘dogs when the Hoyas banked home a meaningless buzzer beater. The other loss for Calipari and Co. came earlier in the season to Xavier.

--Sophomore guard Jonny Flynn leads the ‘Cuse in scoring, averaging 17.5 points and 4.8 assists per game. Freshman guard Tyreke Evans leads Memphis in scoring, pouring in 16.1 PPG.

--The ‘over’ is 5-3 overall for the Orange, 4-4 for the Tigers.

--ESPN will provide television coverage at 6:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy didn’t have a good week in Cincinnati. For starters, he was arrested after an incident between he and his staff and a couple of cab drivers. It doesn’t sound as if Kennedy and his crew were in the wrong. Even worse than the arrest was a knee injury suffered by sophomore guard Chris Warren in the waning moments of a 76-63 loss to Louisville. Warren had an MRI on Friday and results were not yet known. Warren is the SEC’s third-leading scorer with a 19.8 PPG average. CBSports.com's Gary Parrish reported Friday that the Ole Miss doctor has "no doubt" that Warren's ACL is torn, meaning he would become the third Rebel player to go down for the season.

--Parrish also filed this report about Kennedy on Friday.

--Davidson and Purdue will collide at 4:00 p.m. Eastern in a much-anticipated showdown on CBS.

--Bettors looking for late-night action Saturday can wager on VCU’s trip to Norman. The Sooners opened as 13-point home favorites. ESPN2 will have the telecast at 10:00 p.m. Eastern.

(6) Duke (9-1, 5-4 ATS) vs. (7) Xavier (9-0, 4-4 ATS) (at East Rutherford, N.J.)

The Izod Center in East Rutherford hosts a clash of Top 10 programs, as Xavier puts its unbeaten season on the line against Duke.

The Musketeers remained perfect with last Saturday’s 76-66 rout of rival Cincinnati, cashing as a 2½-point road favorite. Xavier is 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in road/neutral-site games this season, and the Musketeers are allowing opponents to make just 35.7 percent of their shots, which is the 12th best field-goal defense in the nation.

Duke bounced back from its first loss – a shocking 81-73 defeat at Michigan as a 10-point road favorite two weeks ago – with Wednesday’s 99-56 rout of North Carolina-Asheville in a non-lined home game. The Blue Devils are 3-1 SU and ATS on the road, and eight of their nine their wins have come by double digits. Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s squad ranks 11th in the nation in scoring at 83.4 points per game.

These teams last met in the Elite Eight of the 2004 NCAA Tournament, with Duke eking out a 66-63 victory, but the Musketeers cashed as a 6½-point underdog.

The Blue Devils have failed to cash in five straight games on Saturday and nine of their last 13 at neutral venues. Meanwhile, Xavier is on ATS runs of 28-9 at neutral sites and 4-1 against winning teams, but they’ve failed to cover in eight of their last 11 on Saturday.

For Duke, the under is on runs of 11-4 overall (all in non-conference play), 8-1 at neutral sites, 4-1 versus Atlantic 10 foes and 6-1 coming off a victory of more than 20 points. Conversely, the Musketeers are on over stretches of 3-0 overall, 12-5 in non-conference action, 4-1 on Saturday and 5-2 after a spread-cover.

ATS ADVANTAGE: XAVIER

(19) Michigan State (7-2, 3-4 ATS) vs. (5) Texas (9-1, 4-3 ATS) (at Houston)

Texas takes its six-game winning streak east to Houston for a non-conference clash with Michigan State at the Toyota Center.

Since knocking off then-No. 15 Villanova 67-58 as a two-point favorite at Madison Square Garden in New York, the Longhorns have slept-walked to victories over Division II foes Southwest Texas State (81-73) and Texas Southern (88-72) in non-lined home games. Texas has scored at least 67 points in all 10 of its games and is outscoring visitors by an average of 17 points per game (76-59).

Michigan State has ripped off three consecutive blowout home victories since an embarrassing loss to top-ranked North Carolina, crushing Bradley 75-59 as a 15-point home favorite, Alcorn State 118-60 in a non-lined game and The Citadel 79-65 as a 28-point home chalk, the latter contest played on Wednesday. The Spartans are 3-1 away from home, but 1-2 ATS.

These teams met each of the last two years, with Michigan State going 2-0 SU and ATS, winning 78-72 as a 4½-point road underdog in 2006 and 78-72 as a four-point home chalk in 2007. The SU winner is 4-0 ATS in the last four head-to-head battles going back to 1999.

The Spartans are on ATS upticks of 4-0 versus the Big 12 and 4-1 after a non-cover, but they’re 0-5 ATS in their last five after a SU victory and 2-7 ATS in their last nine games on Saturday. Meanwhile, Texas is 6-1 ATS in its last seven on Saturday, but 1-4 ATS in its last five against the Big Ten.

The over is 7-1 in Michigan’ State’s last eight games against Big 12 foes and 7-3 in Texas’ last 10 after a SU win.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

(9) Louisville (6-1, 4-2 ATS) vs. Minnesota (9-0, 4-2 ATS) (at Glendale, Ariz.)

Minnesota puts its unbeaten record on the line at University of Phoenix Stadium when it faces its first Top 25 opponent this year in ninth-ranked Louisville.

The Golden Gophers have rolled to five straight double-digit wins, going 3-0 ATS in lined contests during this stretch. They’ve been idle since Dec. 10, when they pounded South Dakota State 74-60 in a non-lined home game. Tubby Smith’s squad has played just once away from Minneapolis this year, and they eked out a 72-71 victory at Colorado State, pushing as a one-point road favorite.

The Cardinals faced Ole Miss in a neutral-site game in Cincinnati on Thursday, struggling to a 77-68 win but coming up short as a 16-point favorite. Since suffering a stunning 14-point loss to Western Kentucky on Nov. 13, Rick Pitino’s troops have won five in a row (2-1 ATS) by an average margin of 25 ppg.

Louisville’s defense has been tremendous to this point, ranking 22nd in the nation in points allowed (57.6 ppg), 11th in field-goal defense (35.8 percent) and second in three-point defense (24.5 percent). Meanwhile, Minnesota is giving up 62.1 ppg on 39.2 percent shooting (32.7 percent from three-point range). However, the Gophers make 49 percent of their shots (73.6 ppg), while Louisville connects at a 44.5 percent rate (79.6 ppg)

The Golden Gophers are 1-7 ATS in their last eight neutral-site games, while Louisville is 0-4 ATS in its last four against the Big Ten, but 21-9-1 ATS in its last 31 overall and 6-2 ATS in its last eight on Saturday.

For Minnesota, the under is on streaks of 16-5 overall in lined games, 37-14 on Saturdays, 5-2 in non-conference play, 4-0 at neutral sites and 8-2 after a SU win. Also, Louisville is on under stretches of 6-1 overall, 4-1-1 at neutral venues, 35-17-1 in non-conference games and 5-0 after a non-cover.

ATS ADVANTAGE: LOUISVILLE and UNDER

(22) Davidson (8-1, 4-3 ATS) vs. (13) Purdue (8-2, 4-4 ATS) (at Indianapolis)

Player-of-the-Year candidate Stephen Curry takes his sharp-shooting act to Conseco Fieldhouse as he leads Davidson in a Top 25 non-conference clash against Purdue.

Davidson has been involved in three consecutive nail-biters, but won them all, including last Saturday’s 100-95 victory over Chattanooga, falling way short as a 23-point home favorite. Curry went 11-for-22 from the field (5-for-11 from 3-point range) and finished with 41 points, the third time this season he’s netted more than 40. Curry leads the nation in scoring at 32 points per game, despite the fact he was held scoreless once this season.

Purdue also has been off since last Saturday, when it pounded Indiana State 76-62, coming up short as a 25-point home favorite. Since consecutive losses to ranked foes Oklahoma (87-82 in overtime in New York) and Duke (76-60 at home), the Boilermakers have won three in a row by margins of 48, 29 and 24 points, going 1-1 ATS in lined games. Purdue has followed up an 18-4-1 ATS run by going 1-4 ATS in its last five lined outings.

With Curry leading the way, Davidson ranks seventh in the nation in scoring at 86.1 ppg, while making 44.8 percent of its shots. However, the Boilermakers are allowing just 57 ppg on 34.7 percent shooting, figures that rank 17th and fifth in the nation, respectively.

Davidson, which has alternated spread-covers in its last six games, is on a bunch of positive ATS runs, including: 48-22-1 overall, 44-18 away from home, 11-2 in non-conference play, 4-0 against the Big Ten, 46-19-1 after a SU win and 40-19-2 on Saturdays. On the flip side, in addition to its 1-4 ATS rut overall, Purdue is in pointspread funks of 0-4 at home and 1-4 against winning teams, but the Boilers have cashed in seven of their last nine on Saturdays.

The over is 5-1 in Davidson’s last six road games, but the under is 4-1 in its last five oveall and 7-2 in its last nine on Saturdays.

ATS ADVANTAGE: DAVIDSON

(2) Connecticut (9-0, 3-2 ATS) vs. (8) Gonzaga (7-1, 5-2 ATS) (at Seattle)

Less than a week after its perfect season came to an end, Gonzaga will attempt to hand second-ranked UConn its first setback as the Bulldogs make the short trip from Spokane to Seattle for what is technically a neutral-site contest at Key Arena.

Gonzaga, playing its sixth straight game on a road or neutral court, went to Arizona as a six-point road chalk Sunday but fell 69-64. It marked the first time all year that the Bulldogs failed to score at least 70 points, and was just the third time they had given up more than 59. However, Mark Few’s team bounced back from the Arizona loss with Thursday’s 84-42 home rout of Texas Southern in a non-lined contest.

As usual, UConn has fattened up on cupcakes early in the season, including four straight wins over the likes of Bryant (88-58), Delaware State (79-49), Buffalo (68-64) and Stony Brook (91-57). Only the Buffalo victory was on the betting board, and the Huskies failed to cash as a 15-point road favorite in that one.

Gonzaga played UConn on a neutral court in Boston last December and came away with an 85-82 victory, covering as a 5½-point underdog. The Bulldogs are 3-0 ATS in three meetings against the Huskies since 1999, all as an underdog.

For the season, Gonzaga is averaging 78 points per game on 48.1 percent shooting and allowing 57.7 ppg on 35.2 percent shooting, the latter number good for ninth-best in the country. Meanwhile, UConn is 15th in the nation in scoring (83 ppg) and seventh in field-goal percentage (51.1), and Jim Calhoun’s troops give up just 60 ppg on 37.1 percent shooting.

UConn is 9-3-1 ATS in its last 13 games against winning teams and 5-2 ATS in its last seven on Saturday, but otherwise the Huskies are in pointspread dips of 5-13 in lined non-conference games, 4-17 at neutral sites, 1-4 against the West Coast Conference and 0-6 when coming off a victory of more than 20 points.

Gonzaga is on ATS tears of 5-2 overall (all in non-conference), 21-7 on Saturdays, 4-0 against the Big East and 6-2 after a win of more than 20 points.

The Huskies are on “over” stretches of 8-2 overall in lined contests, 13-3 at neutral sites and 5-1 after a SU win. The over is also 20-6 in Gonzaga’s last 26 games on Saturday, but otherwise the Zags are on “under” spurts of 6-1 overall and 4-0 at neutral venues.

ATS ADVANTAGE: GONZAGA and OVER

(11) Syracuse (10-1, 3-5 ATS) at (23) Memphis (6-2, 4-4 ATS)

Syracuse looks for its third victory of the season against a ranked opponent when it heads to the FedEx Forum in Memphis for a battle with the Tigers.

The Orange opened the season with nine straight wins, including back-to-back victories over 18th-ranked Florida (89-83) and 22nd-ranked Kansas (89-81). However, their unbeaten season ended in brutal buzzer-beating fashion Monday, as Cleveland State hit a 60-foot shot as time expired to steal a 72-69 win at the Carrier Dome as a 10½-point road underdog. Jim Boeheim’s squad rebounded from that setback with Wednesday’s 82-60 rout of Canisius, but failed to cover as a 23-point home favorite, dropping to 1-4 ATS in its last five lined games.

Memphis also bounced back from a tough loss on Wednesday, downing Arkansas-Little Rock 59-51 at home but coming nowhere close to covering the 22-point spread. Last Saturday, the Tigers went to Georgetown and took the 19th-ranked Hoyas to overtime before falling 79-70 as a six-point road underdog.

These teams last met at Madison Square Garden in November 2004, with the Orange rolling to a 77-62 victory as a 2½-point favorite. Two years earlier, Memphis beat Syracuse 70-63 as a 4½-point home ‘dog.

Syracuse has scored at least 69 points in every game this year, producing 79 or more eight times, and the Orange rank 20th in scoring offense (82 ppg) and 17th in field-goal offense (49.7 ppg). Meanwhile, the Tigers have scored 80 points or more five times, but have also been held to 58 and 59 points in two of their contests. John Calipari’s squad is netting 78 ppg on just 42.1 percent shooting, including a woeful 27.3 percent from 3-point land.

Syracuse is 4-1 ATS in its last five on Saturday, but 0-8 ATS in its last eight following a victory of more than 20 points. Meanwhile, Memphis 4-1 ATS in its last five on Saturday, but 1-4 ATS in its last five against teams with a winning record.

The over is on streaks of 4-1 for Syracuse on Saturday, 5-2 for Syracuse following a victory, 5-1 for Memphis on Saturday and 8-0 for Memphis when facing Big East opponents.

ATS ADVANTAGE: OVER

College basketball bettors' TV guide
By MATT SEVERANCE

It's not an NCAA Tournament weekend but Saturday’s loaded lineup sure looks like one with two games featuring two top-10 teams and five games overall with both teams ranked. Sit back and enjoy before the bowls steal the spotlight back for a few weeks.

Michigan State Spartans vs. Texas Longhorns (Saturday, 2 p.m., CBS)

The No. 22 Spartans didn’t look great in beating The Citadel Wednesday night but one important thing came from that game: the return of starting center Goran Suton. He played 17 minutes after missing six games and then undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. This will be MSU’s 91st game against a ranked opponent since the 1999-2000 national championship season. It is 44-46 in that span.

The No. 5 Longhorns already have beaten ranked teams UCLA and Villanova and lost to Notre Dame after missing a last-second shot. Saturday’s game is at Houston’s Toyota Center and the Horns are 3-0 all-time in that building. Michigan State has beaten Texas on neutral courts the past two seasons. In his last four games, UT guard A.J. Abrams is averaging 28.5 points per game while hitting 18-of-33 (.545) 3-pointers and 28-of-33 (.848) free throws.

Duke Blue Devils vs. Xavier Musketeers (Saturday, 2 p.m., CBS)

This game at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. is just the third meeting between the schools. They have played only three times including two meetings in the NCAA Tournament with the last and only regular-season meeting coming in 1993. Xavier has reached its highest ranking ever at No. 7. Its 9-0 start is the second best in school history and the best since the 1996-1997 season.

Duke is quite at home at the Meadowlands, going 17-1 there all-time. Duke had 11 days off following its loss at Michigan before crushing UNC-Asheville by 43 points on Wednesday when coach Mike Krzyzewski started five reserves, saying it sent a message that he believes in his bench. The under is 8-1 in Duke’s past nine neutral site games and the Blue Devils are 0-5 ATS in their past five Saturday games.

Louisville Cardinals vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (Saturday, 2 p.m., Fox Sports Net)

There is one unbeaten team in this game at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale and it’s not the No. 9 Cardinals. The Gophers have fattened up on a weak schedule and only one road game. Their best home wins so far are over Virginia and Cornell, which may contend in the Ivy League. The Gophers’ current RPI rankings is 128. Guard Blake Hoffarber, who missed the last game because of a sprained ankle, and forward Paul Carter, who missed the past four games with a similar injury, both should play.

Since Louisville was upset by Western Kentucky in late November it hasn’t looked back, winning five in a row. Only one of those victories came by fewer than 19 points and that was Thursday’s 77-68 win over Ole Miss. Earl Clark had career highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds in that game. Louisville is 2-5 in its past seven regular-season, neutral-site games.

Davidson Wildcats vs. Purdue Boilermakers (Saturday, 4 p.m., CBS)

This game is part of the Wooden Tradition in Indianapolis. You probably know one thing about No. 20 Davidson: Stephen Curry. He is leading the nation in scoring at 31.9 points per game. He has scored 44 points twice this season and shoots 47.9 percent from the field. He also averages 10 3-point attempts per game. If you throw out that fluke game against Loyola (Md.) where he was double-teamed on every play and didn’t score, Curry is averaging 35.9 points per game.

One could argue that the No. 18 Boilermakers have really played only two good teams and lost to both (Duke and Oklahoma). Since that Duke loss, Purdue has won three in a row by more than 30 points a game. Of course, that was against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Ball State and Indiana State. Purdue’s Chris Kramer is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and will get the defensive assignment on Curry.

Connecticut Huskies vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs (Saturday, 4 p.m., CBS)

This is by far the best game Saturday and a potential matchup of No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. The two teams met in Boston last December and the Zags pulled out an 85-82 win.

No. 2 UConn is outscoring foes by an average of 23 points and hasn’t really been challenged except for a hiccup against Buffalo. Stanley Robinson, who averaged 10.4 points per game last season, returned to the team in Monday’s rout of Stony Brook after taking a semester off from school to deal with personal issues.

No. 7 Gonzaga rebounded from a loss at Arizona last Sunday with a 42-point rout of Texas Southern Thursday night. Many of the starters didn’t play much in the second half to rest up for UConn. The Zags are No. 12 in the nation in defensive field goal percentage (40.7 percent).

BYU Cougars vs. Arizona State Sun Devils (Saturday, 4:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net)

This follows the Louisville-Minnesota game in Glendale, Ariz. The unranked Cougars are probably the most overlooked 10-0 team in the nation and are off to their best start since the 1987-88 season. Brigham Young guard Jimmer Fredette is the reigning co-MWC Player of the Week after averaged 20.0 points per game while shooting 72.7 percent from the field as BYU crushed Boise State and Portland last week.

No. 17 Arizona State is led by super sophomore James Harden, who leads the team with a scoring average, shooting percentage, 3-point shooting and steals and is second in rebounding (6.9 per game) and assists (35). Harden is shooting 72 percent from the 3-point line in the past five games. Four players average double figures for ASU which is 8-1 for just the fourth time in 34 seasons.

Syracuse Orange at Memphis Tigers (Saturday, 6 p.m., ESPN)

The No. 11 Orange can finish off a sweep of the teams in last season’s national championship game. Syracuse beat Kansas by eight in overtime earlier this season. Syracuse starting guard Jonny Flynn is a game-time decision with a sprained ankle. SU loves the free-throw line, having outscored its foes 212-82 there this season.

No. 21 Memphis has lost two of its past four games but those were to Xavier and Georgetown. Freshman guard Tyreke Evans leads Memphis in scoring at 16.1 ppg, while Shawn Taggert leads the team in rebounding at 9.5 rpg and is second on the squad in scoring (12.9 ppg). These schools have split two previous meetings with the last coming in 2004. Saturday’s game is the first not on a neutral court.

Pittsburgh Panthers at Florida State Seminoles (Sunday, 5:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net)

The No. 3 Panthers have had a cupcake schedule thus far and have yet to face a ranked team. The Noles aren’t ranked but they are 11-1 and 6-0 at home. Pitt is struggling from 3-point range, hitting just 34.7 percent. Tyrell Biggs, all 250 pounds of him, leads the Panthers in hitting 53.5 percent (8-for-15) from behind the arc. Concerning is that shooting guard Jermaine Dixon is hitting just 16.7 percent (5 for 30).

Florida State might have found a beast in the middle in Solomon Alabi. The 7-foot-1 freshman, a native of Nigeria, had his first double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds to go with six blocks as the Seminoles crushed Charleston Southern Thursday night. His matchup against Pitt sophomore DeJuan Blair might determine this game. Blair recorded his seventh double-double in 11 games this season with a 21-point, 16-rebound effort in a 79-66 victory over Siena on Wednesday.

NCB non-conference schedule: What we've learned so far
By JOSH NAGEL

For college basketball fans, the first eight weeks of the season are akin to an appetizer, before the start of the new year brings in the main course. From early November through late December, our appetites are whet with a sampling of each team has to offer.

So what have we learned so far? If nothing else, it’s clear that North Carolina is, as CBS analysts Clark Kellogg put it, “At least a head-and-a-half ahead of everyone else.” Tyler Hansbrough and friends have fought through some injuries to key players to bolt out to a 9-0 start.

But the oddsmakers were ready for them. Knowing the Tar Heels were loaded and capable of running up some huge numbers, they were accordingly given some astronomical spreads to cover.

What’s more, the time for taking a future on them to win it all probably came and went sometime around July. Opening at about 3/1 in most sportsbooks, these odds have dwindled to barely above even money in most online and Nevada books.

So while a team like North Carolina might be transparent, the potential of others isn’t so clear. Last Saturday provided an interesting day of double-figure spreads and the teams that covered them.

For instance, a still-rebuilding Kentucky squad gave up 17 points to downtrodden Indiana in their annual rivalry game and, thanks to a blistering first half, the Wildcats held on and covered in a 72-54 win.

Conversely, defending national champion Kansas, a team depleted by graduation and NBA defections, was laying a similar number against a Massachusetts club that reached the final of last year’s postseason NIT. The Minutemen beat the Jayhawks 61-60.

What does it all mean? In short, that bettors and oddsmakers alike still are feeling their way through the college hoops landscape.

“A lot of times, the bookmakers are the last ones to catch on to what’s going on,” said Chris Andrews, director of Leroy’s sportsbooks for Northern Nevada. “It’s usually the players that are aware of who has the goods and who doesn’t.”

With this in mind, here is a snapshot of what we’ve seen in college basketball thus far in terms of performance both on the court and in the pocket books of gamblers:

Pleasant surprises

Gonzaga - Long the class of the West Coast Conference, coach Mark Few’s club had fallen off the national radar a bit in the past few years because his teams weren’t as talented as the ones that had made them a perennial Sweet Sixteen contender. The program should return to that status this year with a seasoned squad led by playmaker Jeremy Pargo and center Josh Heytvelt. The Bulldogs are 8-1 overall and have impressive wins over Washington State and Oklahoma State already on their resume. They are 5-2 ATS thus far. Current odds to win it all: 15/1.

Oklahoma - The Sooners were expected to be improved, but player of the year candidate Blake Griffin and his supporting cast have been better than advertised. Under second-year coach Jeff Capel, they have been reminiscent of the Kelvin Sampson-coached clubs that won games with a smothering defense but had some scoring punch as well. They are 10-0 with a 5-2 ATS mark. Current odds: 18/1.

Michigan – Wolverines fans finally have cause for founded optimism based on their start under second-year coach John Beilein. Their dominant performance in an 81-73 home win over Duke – as a 9.5-point dog – showed how far they have come. They are 7-2 overall and 4-1-1 ATS. Current odds: 100/1.

Disappointments

Kentucky – Despite its win and cover over Indiana, the Wildcats often still look stuck in the mud and confused on offense. In other words, a lot like last year in Billy Gillespie’s first season. Kentucky is 7-3 overall and 2-2-1 ATS. Current odds: 80/1.

Florida – More improvement was expected than what we’ve seen from the Gators, who had high expectations after a year of growing pains. Nick Calathes is a blue-chip talent but has been inconsistent. The Gators are 7-2 and 1-4 ATS. Current odds: 50/1.

UNLV – A trendy darkhorse Final Four pick, Lon Kruger’s club boasts perhaps the nation’s top point guard in Wink Adams. But home losses to Cal and Cincinnati and struggles against inferior clubs have derailed its start. The Rebels are 8-2 and 3-6 ATS. Current odds: 100/1.

To soon to say

Pitt – A tempting club to back because the Panthers always provide great defense and rebounding, but their half-court style often prevents them from covering big numbers. Their 10-0 start doesn’t include any formidable opponents; they are 3-2-1 ATS. Current odds: 12/1.

Michigan State – Tom Izzo’s teams historically start slow and play brutal schedules, but the Spartans looked awful in blowout losses to North Carolina and Maryland. They should still be a force by season’s end, though. Their 6-2 mark includes a 3-4 ATS effort. Current odds: 40/1.

Duke – As usual, Duke comes with great expectations, and a bet on the Devils usually will give you a fighting chance. But the loss to Michigan and a close call against Rhode Island showed that they have some vulnerability to relying on outside shots. Their 8-1 overall mark includes a 5-4 ATS record. Current odds: 15/1.
