Sunday's Slate
By B Edwards

**Marquette at Louisville**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Louisville (22-5 straight up, 17-10 against the spread) as an 8 ½-point favorite with a total of 144.

--Marquette (23-5 SU, 11-11-1 ATS) saw its senior floor general suffer a season-ending injury in Wednesday’s 93-82 home loss to UConn as a one-point home underdog. Dominic James, who finished third in school history in scoring and second in assists, went down with a broken bone in his foot that required surgery Friday. He was averaging 11 points and 5.1 assists per game.

--During Thursday’s edition of the Power Hours on VI Radio, veteran handicapper Marc Lawrence had this take on Marquette’s loss of James: “I think it’s going to have a tremendous impact on the the team. James was the catalyst and really the glue to Marquette’s three-guard lineup. Now it’s not as dramatic a loss as say a Patty Mills at Saint Mary’s, but it will be very difficult for this team moving forward. From a handicapping standpoint, you have to stay away from backing Marquette until we see how it adjusts.”

--The 11-point loss to UConn was a tad misleading. Even with James leaving the game in the first half, the Golden Eagles still had a one-point advantage with six-plus minutes remaining. Jerel McNeal finished with 26 points, five rebounds and four assists.

--Louisville has won four consecutive games both SU and ATS, including Monday’s run-away-and-hide victory at Georgetown. The Cardinals dominated from the get-go in a 76-58 win as one-point favorites. Earl Clark paced the Cards with 20 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

--Buzz Williams’ team is 2-3 both SU and ATS when listed as an underdog this season.

--Rick Pitino’s team is 14-2 SU and 10-6 ATS at home this year. The ‘over’ has hit in five straight U of L games, improving to 13-12 overall and 8-7 in the Cards’ home games.

--The ‘under’ is 12-11 overall for Marquette, but the ‘over’ has hit in its last two outings.

--The ‘under’ has cashed in three straight head-to-head meetings and five of the last six between these Big East rivals. Louisville has won three in a row both SU and ATS over Marquette, including last year’s 71-51 home win as a three-point favorite.

--After this tough road game at Freedom Hall, things won’t get any easier for Marquette. The Golden Eagles finish at Pitt and then at home vs. the ‘Cuse.

--Tip-off is scheduled for noon Eastern on CBS.

**Tennessee at Florida**

--LVSC opened Florida (21-7 SU, 8-12-1 ATS) as a five-point favorite with a total of 154. Before that number was released, Lawrence and I both speculated that we’d see the number at five or six. Lawrence said, “I like Florida’s chances here, especially with 16-point revenge coming off that embarrassing loss at Tennessee. If the number is five or less, I think the Gators are the play with a four-game losing streak against the Vols going a long way toward their motivation at home.”

--Billy Donovan’s squad saw its brief two-game winning streak halted in Tuesday’s 81-75 loss at LSU. The Gators failed to cover the number as four-point underdogs. Playing with flu-like symptoms, UF’s star guard Nick Calathes was limited to 12 points. He did have seven rebounds and six assists, while Walter Hodge finished with a team-high 16 points.

--Tennessee (17-10 SU, 10-14-1 ATS) has struggled on the road recently, losing three in a row both SU and ATS and it has failed to cash tickets in four straight road assignments. The Vols bounced back from losses at Ole Miss and at Kentucky by capturing an 81-76 win over Mississippi St. on Wednesday. However, they failed to cover the number as nine-point home favorites. Scotty Hopson poured in a team-high 21 points, while Tyler Smith added 12 points and nine rebounds.

--Since Bruce Pearl arrived in Knoxville, the Gators have won a pair of national championships. Nevertheless, the Vols have owned UF during that stretch. In fact, UT has won four in a row over Florida and six of seven both SU and ATS with Pearl on the sidelines. When these teams met at Thompson-Boling Arena earlier this season, Calathes got into early foul trouble and the Vols cruised to a 79-63 victory as four-point home ‘chalk.’

--Tennessee has only been an underdog three times this year. The Vols are 0-3 both SU and ATS in those spots. Meanwhile, Florida is unbeaten in 16 home games but has just 4-6 spread record to show for it.

-- In ESPN.com’s latest “Bracketology” report from Joe Lunardi on Friday, Florida was of one of the teams among his “last four in” the NCAA Tournament field. We should point out that UF was listed as an 11th seed, so it was ahead of Penn St. and Oklahoma St., both of whom were No. 12 seeds. UT was marked as an eighth seed that would face Boston College in Round 1.

--According to Lunardi, Tennessee is in a much better situation than Florida, most likely based upon the Vols’ non-conference wins over Siena, Marquette and Georgetown. The Gators have a non-conference victory over Pac-10-leading Washington on a neutral floor in Kansas City, but that’s about it unless you want to count a home win over N.C. St. The biggest blemish on UF’s record is its inexplicable loss at Georgia.

--The ‘over’ has cashed in four straight games for the Gators. Also, they have seen the ‘over’ hit at an 11-9 overall clip, 6-4 in their home games at the O-Dome. On the flip side, UT has seen the ‘under’ go 14-11 overall, 9-3 in its last 12 outings.

--CBS will have the telecast at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Maryland at North Carolina State**

--LVSC opened North Carolina State (15-11 SU, 13-7-1 ATS) as a four-point favorite with a total of 144.

--Maryland (17-10 SU, 10-8-2 ATS) shocked North Carolina last Saturday in overtime to get itself back into the bubble conversation. On Wednesday, however, the Terrapins dropped a 78-67 decision to Duke as six-point home underdogs. The final score was misleading as this was tight game for the first 38 minutes. The Terps fell apart after star guard Greivis Vasquez fouled out with three-plus minutes left.

--Vasquez absolutely torched the Tar Heels with a tremendous performance, posting a triple-double with 35 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, three blocked shots and a pair of steals. But against the Blue Devils, Vasquez was limited to just 10 points, six rebounds and five assists in only 22 minutes of play due to foul trouble.

--As a bettor, I think you give Maryland a complete mulligan with the loss to Duke. In fact, not only do I contend that the Terps would’ve covered against Duke if the officials hadn’t taken Vasquez out of the equation, but I’ll take it a step further and say they would’ve won outright.

--Sidney Lowe’s team played extremely well during the month of February, posting a 4-3 SU record to go with a 5-1 ATS mark. The Wolfpack lost 85-78 Thursday at Wake Forest, but they hooked up their backers as 11 ½-point underdogs. Tracy Smith had a team-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting for N.C. St.

--The ‘over’ is on a 10-2 tear in N.C. St.’s last 12 games. Furthermore, the ‘over’ is 12-7 overall for the Wolfpack, 7-3 in their home games.

--Maryland has won four straight over N.C. St. both SU and ATS. In fact, the last three wins by the Terps have come by margins of 14 points or more.

--FSN will provide television coverage at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

NCAAB bettors' weekend TV guide
By MATT SEVERANCE

Two weeks until Selection Sunday, with some good games on Saturday but a tremendous lineup on CBS on Sunday, making it feel like a Sweet 16-type weekend with ranked teams facing each other in all three matchups.

Marquette at Louisville (Sunday, noon, CBS)

Marquette begins life without guard Dominic James. He led the team in assists, was fourth in scoring and was the Golden Eagles' best perimeter defender before breaking his foot last Wednesday.

Maurice Acker will get the majority of James' minutes in MU's guard-heavy offense. He played 33 minutes against Connecticut, scoring six points with four assists and no turnovers. The junior was averaging just under nine minutes per game before Wednesday.

Missouri at Kansas (Sunday, 2 p.m., CBS)

Missouri, which is 11 players deep in its rotation, has won seven in a row in Big 12 play for the first time since 1999-2000 and has tied a school record with 11 conference wins overall. The Tigers were 5-point home favorites when they faced KU on Feb. 9 and won 62-60 on a Zaire Taylor shot with 1.3 seconds remaining despite trailing by 14 at the half.

The two teams were a combined 4-for-29 from the 3-point line in that one, which ended a five-game Jayhawks winning streak in the series. Neither team has lost since.

Michigan State at Illinois (Sunday, 4 p.m., CBS)

The Spartans can all but wrap up the Big Ten regular-season title with a win. But MSU is banged up. Shooting guard Durrell Summers left Wednesday's win over Iowa early because of an ankle injury, point guard Kalin Lucas has a bad right thumb and forward Raymar Morgan continues to recover from an illness. The three combined for eight points against the Hawkeyes.

Coach Tom Izzo says he doesn't think Summers' injury is severe enough to keep him out of the Illinois game. Izzo told reporters Summers sat out the second half Wednesday as a precaution.

Michigan State beat Illinois 63-57 on Jan. 17 as an 8-point home favorite and has won five of the past six against the Illini
