**Connecticut at St. John’s**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Connecticut (14-1 straight up, 5-4 against the spread) as an 11-point road favorite with a total of 140. Bettors should be wary of the “road” label, though, because Madison Square Garden will likely have about 50 percent UConn fans in the stands.

--Jim Calhoun’s squad has won three in a row both SU and ATS since suffering its lone loss to Georgetown in the Big East opener for both schools. The Huskies are off an 81-72 win at Cincinnati as 8 ½-point road favorites. A.J. Price paced the winners with 22 points and five assists, connecting on 8-of-12 shots and 5-of-8 attempts from 3-point land.

--St. John’s (10-5 SU, 4-5-1 ATS) has lost four of its last five games both SU and ATS, including Sunday’s 90-67 loss at Pittsburgh as a 20-point underdog.

--Norm Roberts’ team is already without its star player, Anthony Mason Jr., who went down with a season-ending foot injury in late November. Sophomore point guard Malik Boothe, who is averaging 8.4 points, 5.0 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game, has been out the last four games with a thumb injury. His return for Thursday is “questionable.”

--UConn is an abysmal 0-3 ATS as a double-digit ‘chalk’ this year. As for St. John’s, it is 0-2 ATS as a double-digit underdog, 1-4 ATS in five ‘dog spots.

--The ‘over’ is 5-4 overall for the Red Storm, but the ‘under’ is 2-1 in their home assignments. The ‘over’ is also 5-4 overall for the Huskies.

--The ‘under’ is 4-1 in the last five head-to-head meetings between these Big East schools.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Purdue at Northwestern**

--LVSC sent out Purdue (12-4 SU, 5-7 ATS) as a five-point favorite for the opening line. The company makes the opening numbers for all sporting events wagered on in Las Vegas started the total at 121.

--Northwestern (8-5 SU, 4-5-1 ATS) has lost its first three Big Ten games, including last Wednesday’s 74-45 loss at Wisconsin as a seven-point road underdog. Even worse, the Wildcats have failed to cover the number in five consecutive outings.

--Matt Painter’s team snapped a two-game slide with Sunday’s 65-52 win over Wisconsin as a six-point home ‘chalk.’ JaJuan Johnson paced the Boilermakers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Robbie Hummel added 16 points after missing the previous game – a 67-64 loss at Penn St. --- with a back injury.

--Bill Carmody is still trying to get Northwestern to its first NCAA Tournament in school history in his eighth year at the school since leaving Princeton. If this is going to be the year, the Wildcats desperately need a win in this spot. They did pick up a few decent non-conference victories over FSU and Depaul, while also playing Butler (57-53) and Stanford (65-59) tight in narrow road defeats.

--Northwestern is 7-1 SU and 3-2 ATS at home this year. The Wildcats have only been home underdogs once, losing 77-66 to Michigan St. as 4 ½-point puppies.

--Purdue is 1-1 both SU and ATS as a road favorite.

--Purdue has won four in a row over Northwestern both SU and ATS, including last year’s 71-56 triumph in Evanston as an eight-point road favorite.

--Purdue has watched the ‘under’ go 7-5 overall. Meanwhile, the ‘over’ is 5-4 overall for Northwestern, 3-2 in its home games.

**North Carolina at Virginia**

--North Carolina (14-2 SU, 6-8 ATS) is still No. 1 in LVSC’s Top 30 despite a pair of losses to start ACC play. The Tar Heels are hoping to bounce back from Sunday’s 92-89 loss at Wake Forest as 6 1/2-point road favorites. UNC couldn’t do anything to contain Wake’s Jeff Teague, who went off for a game-high 34 points. Tyler Hansbrough had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort, but he made just 3-of-12 shots from the floor. Danny Green finished with a team-high 22 points.

--LVSC opened UNC as a 12-point favorite with a total of 158.

--Virginia (7-6 SU, 4-4 ATS) took the cash in its only previous game as a double-digit underdog, nearly winning outright in a 73-70 loss at Syracuse as a 16-point ‘dog. The Cavs are 3-2 ATS in five games as puppies, 0-1 ATS in their lone spot as home ‘dogs (an 84-70 loss to Xavier as 3 ½-point ‘dogs).

--North Carolina has limped to a 2-6 spread record in its last eight games. For the season, the Tar Heels are 6-7 ATS as double-digit favorites.

--The ‘over’ is on a 3-1 run for the Cavs, but their totals have been a wash for the season (4-4 overall, 2-2 at home).

--The ‘over’ is 8-6 overall for North Carolina.

Xavier will go after its fifth straight victory when it makes an Atlantic 10 trip to Rhode Island, which just had its three-game win streak snapped in excruciating fashion.

The Musketeers ripped Fordham 86-60 Sunday to easily cover as a 17-point road favorite, winning their fourth in a row (3-0 ATS in lined games) following a two-game SU and ATS skid in setbacks to Duke and Butler. During their current streak, the Musketeers have won all four games by at least 16 points, putting up an average of 79.5 ppg. Also, for the season, Xavier is fifth in the nation defensively in field-goal percentage, allowing opponents to hit at just a 36.7 percent clip.

The Rams fell short at St. Joe’s on Saturday, losing 92-86 in triple-overtime as a 1½-point road underdog for their second straight ATS setback in just their fourth lined game since Dec. 6. Rhode Island has been putting up points lately, averaging 85.6 ppg in its last five games, but it is also allowing 77 ppg. The Rams have played just one home game in the past month – routing Akron 79-50 on Jan. 3 as an eight-point chalk – but they’re outscoring opponents by more than 14 ppg at home (84.3-67.8).

Xavier is on a 7-1 SU and ATS tear in this rivalry, including an 81-77 road win last February as a two-point pup. The Musketeers have cashed in five straight at Rhode Island, and the road team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 clashes.

The Musketeers are on ATS runs of 5-2 overall, 4-0 on Thursday, 4-0 on the highway, 5-1 after a SU win and 10-3 after a win of more than 20 points. The Rams are on a 6-1 ATS roll against winning teams, but they also carry negative ATS streaks of 1-9 in conference play, 3-8-1 at home, 3-8 following a SU loss and 3-8 in Thursday contests.

The over for Xavier is on stretches of 6-1 overall, 4-0 against winning teams and 4-1 on the road, and the over for Rhode Island is on rolls of 48-23 overall, 6-0 against winning teams, 20-7 inside the A-10 and 36-17 at home. Finally, the total has gone high in the last six meetings between these two teams.

(18) Minnesota (15-1, 7-3-1 ATS) at Wisconsin (12-4, 7-7 ATS)

Streaking Minnesota looks to keep its surprising start going when it travels to the Kohl Center to take on Wisconsin.

The Golden Gophers pounded Penn State 79-59 Sunday as a 6½-point home chalk, winning and cashing for the third straight game since suffering their only setback of the year – a 70-58 home loss to Michigan State laying one point. Against the Nittany Lions, Minnesota went a perfect 9-for-9 from 3-point range and shot a scorching 62.5 percent overall (30 of 48), while allowing Penn State to shoot just 36.7 percent (22 of 60).

The Badgers lost to Purdue 65-52 Sunday catching six points, ending their three-game SU run (2-1 ATS) to open Big Ten Conference play. Wisconsin shot just 37.5 percent (21 of 56), well off its season average of 44.5. The Badgers have a typically solid defense this year, allowing just 59.2 ppg (23rd nationally) while scoring 66.4 ppg., and on their home floor, they’re outscoring opponents by 11 ppg (67.1-56.0).

Wisconsin is on a 6-0 SU (5-1 ATS) run in this rivalry, including a 65-56 home win last year, but Minnesota covered in that contest as a 10-point pup. The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five clashes.

The Gophers are on positive ATS runs of 7-1 overall, 6-1 against winning teams, 6-1 coming off a SU win and 5-1 against teams with a winning percentage above .600. Likewise, the Badgers are on ATS upticks of 6-1 after a SU loss, 16-5-1 after a pointspread setback and 9-3 in conference play.

The under for Minnesota is on streaks of 19-7 overall, 8-1 on Thursday, 6-1 in roadies and 13-3 in the Big Ten, and the under for Wisconsin is on stretches of 6-1 on Thursday, 5-1 against winning teams, 8-3 in conference play and 17-8-1 at the Kohl Center. In addition, the total has gone low in six of the last eight contests in this rivalry.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Arizona (11-5, 8-6 ATS) at (9) UCLA (13-2, 7-7 ATS)

Red-hot UCLA, returning home after a successful three-game road swing to open Pac-10 play, takes on Arizona at Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins followed up a road sweep of Oregon and Oregon State by holding off archrival Southern Cal 64-60 Sunday as a two-point road chalk for their ninth consecutive victory (4-4 ATS in lined games). UCLA got outshot by USC 49 percent to 42 percent, but the Bruins went 8-for-20 from three-point land 14-for-19 on free throws, while the Trojans went just 3 of 9 from long distance and made 9 of 15 free throws. It was a rare close game for UCLA, which is averaging 76.2 ppg and allowing just 58.3 (16th nationally).

The Wildcats, like UCLA, swept Oregon and Oregon State, but did so on their home floor last weekend, dropping Oregon 67-52 as a 10-point favorite last Thursday and routing Oregon State 64-47 laying 15½ points Saturday. Those wins followed a pair of double-digit losses at Cal and Stanford (0-2 ATS). In fact, on the road this season, Arizona is giving up 72.8 ppg, while scoring just 61.2.

UCLA has won seven straight games in this rivalry (5-2 ATS), including an 82-60 home rout last February giving nine points. A month later, the Bruins held off the Wildcats 68-66, with Arizona covering as a 5½-point home ‘dog.

The Bruins are on ATS runs of 5-0 against winning teams, 4-0 versus teams with a win percentage above .600 and 12-4 on Thursday, but they’ve gone 0-4 ATS in their last four starts following a spread-cover. The Wildcats, meanwhile, are on a handful of negative ATS streaks, including 1-6 on the road, 4-9 after a SU win and 9-19 in their last 28 Thursday outings.

The under is 5-2 in UCLA’s last seven games, but the over is 6-1 in the Bruins’ last seven at home following a road trip of three or more games. The over for Arizona is on a 20-9 run on Thursdays, but the under is on a 4-0 stretch (all in Pac-10 play).

(16) Arizona State (14-2, 8-4 ATS) at USC (10-5, 6-7 ATS)

Surging Arizona State heads to Los Angeles for a meeting at the Galen Center with Southern Cal, which is looking to halt a two-game SU and ATS skid.

The Sun Devils have won 10 of their last 11 games (6-2 ATS in lined contests), including a SU and ATS home sweep of Oregon State and Oregon last week to bounce back from an 81-71 loss at Cal laying 1½ points. Following a 69-38 beatdown of Oregon State last Thursday as an overwhelming 19½-point chalk, ASU rolled over Oregon 76-58 giving 15½ points Saturday. The Sun Devils, outscoring opponents by nine ppg on the road (73.3-64.3), have averaged 78.0 ppg in their last five starts, while allowing 60.2.

The Trojans opened Pac-10 play with an 83-62 road rout of Oregon as a 2½-point favorite for their fifth straight win, but they’ve since suffered a pair of SU and ATS losses. USC tumbled at Oregon State 62-58 in overtime as a healthy 11-point chalk, then returned home Saturday and dropped a tight decision to archrival UCLA, losing 64-60 as a two-point pup. In that contest, 3-pointers and free throws were the difference, as the Trojans went 3 of 9 from long distance and 9 of 15 at the line, while the Bruins hit 8 of 20 3-pointers and 14 of 19 free throws.

ASU has cashed in five of the last six clashes in this rivalry (3-3 SU), going 2-0 ATS and 1-1 SU in last year’s meetings, including a 59-55 road loss catching 4½ points. The underdog is on a 9-2 ATS stretch in the last 11 contests.

The Sun Devils are on a 1-5 ATS decline following a pointspread win, but they are otherwise on positive pointspread runs of 4-1 overall, 4-0 on Thursday, 6-1-1 on the highway and 6-1-1 against the Pac-10. The Trojans are on ATS dips of 2-9 at home against teams with a winning road mark, 1-4 on Thursday and 2-6 against winning teams, but they’ve been a good bounce-back team, going 18-7 ATS in their last 25 games after a SU loss and 5-2 ATS in their last seven contests after a non-cover.

The over has hit in seven of ASU’s last 10 games, but the under for the Sun Devils is on streaks of 6-1 on Thursday, 7-2 after an ATS win and 5-2 against winning teams, and the under for USC is on stretches of 4-1 in Pac-10 play, 4-1 against winning teams and 4-1 after an ATS loss. Finally, in this rivalry, the total has gone low in five straight games at the Galen Center and is 6-2 in the last eight contests overall.

Minnesota vs. Wisconsin

See, here's the deal with this game. On one hand, you have a Minnesota team that is playing great basketball. After all, they are 15-1, ranked in the top 50 in most power rankings, come off a 20 point win over Penn State at home, is 3-1 in conference play, defeated Iowa on the road, defeated Ohio State at home with their only hiccup against conference leader Michigan State at home (their first conference game). Heck, this Minny team even beat Louisville on a neutral floor earlier this year as let's face it, Tubby Smith is the man - that's just the bottom line. Wisconsin comes off a tough loss to Purdue on the road by a score of 52-65. But, that's not too suprising considering Purdue is a solid team and they had yet to win a a conference game and they were playing at home and it was essentially a must win. Wisconsin recenty played NW at home as well and hammered them 75-45 and did beat Michigan on the road Outright earlier this year 73-61 that not even Duke could do. I think in some ways, this game is similar to Illinois vs. Michigan with the home team laying -6.5 to -7 here and I lean on Wisconsin to bounce-back here but I hate giving points to a Tubby Smith team.

Purdue vs. Northwestern

Northwestern is a top 60 team that has played poorly in conference play despite playing well in non-conference play. Heck, this team that defeated FSU at home, Depaul and barely lost to Butler by 4 points on the road, has gotten crushed has lost by 11 to Michigan State at home, lost to Penn State on the road and comes home after being embarrassed by Wisconsin 45-74. Purdue did lose to to Penn State on the road and is 1-2 in conference play coming off a huge win over Wisconsin at home. I can actually see NW getting in for the cover here. After all, Purdue will be favored by 70% of the public or more, comes off a huge win, could be in for a let down, plays NW who just comes off almost a 30 point conference loss, who only lost to Michigan State by 11 and who is desperate for a conference win - no thanks.

Uconn vs. St. Johns

Sure, it would feel nice to lean on Uconn here but St. Johns is the same team that although played horrible coming into conference play, defeated Notre Dame at home. St. Johns also comes off an embarrassing 23 point loss to Pitt and who will look to bounce-back strong here at home as 12 point dogs. I can see St. Johns hanging tough here after such a tough loss to the #1 team in the country at home and any team that beats a vet team like ND at home deserves a look. Uconn is playing well including beating WVU Outright on the road and defeated a similar Cincy team (similar compared to St. Johns) by 9 so I have St. Johns losing just under the spread here - hence, a lean on StJ.

Purdue won, covered last four games vs Northwestern, winning last two in Evanston by 7-15 points. Boilers are healthier now- they got first Big 11 win vs Wisconsin Saturday, 65-52. Wildcats are 0-3 in Big 11, losing by 4-11-29 points. home teams are 11-9 vs spread so far this season, 2-1 if an underdog.

UConn won last five games vs St John's (3-0-1 vs spread in last four) it is likely Huskies will have more fans in MSG than home team, which is 1-2 in Big East, upsetting Notre Dame in its only conference home game so far. UConn is playing third straight road game, winning last two by 6-9 points. Big East home underdogs are 3-6 against the spread.

Northeastern won last seven games vs Delaware, winning last three here by 9-14-4 points; Huskies won, covered first five CAA games, winning on road by 5 at James Madison, 14 at Georgia State- they held last four foes under 39% from floor. Delaware lost last three games, by 1-5-3 pts making just 7-33 from arc in its last two games.

Xavier won five of last six games vs Rhode Island, winning last three in this gym by 14-9-4 points; favorites are 4-1 vs spread in last five series games. Musketeers won four in row since back/back December losses-- they won first two A-14 games, both by 26 points. URI lost last game in triple OT at St Joseph's, after being down 17 at the half.

Cleveland State won last three games by 9-26-10 points, splitting pair of road games; Wright State was only one of six Horizon foes to make more than 38.1% of shots from floor vs Vikings. Green Bay is 4-1 in Horizon, with last two games both decided by hoop- they're just 7-35 from arc in their last two games, and still both games were decided by two points.

Western Kentucky is 4-1 in Sun Belt, winning its home games by 23-32 points; Hilltoppers are 19-40 from arc in the two conference home tilts- they're 9-2 if they allow less than 80 points. Middle Tennessee is 5-0 in Sun Belt, winning road games at North Texas, South Alabama, after they lost by 8 at Vanderbilt, 13 at Belmont in non-conference play.

North Carolina is 0-2 in ACC, allowing 88.5 ppg- they shot 38.4/35.1% in losses to BC, Wake, as PG Lawson has struggled getting ball to good spots (Heels are 13-45 from arc, too). UNC split last four visits to UVa, winning 75-74 here LY. Virginia split pair of road games to open play in ACC, with the two games decided by total of seven points.

Wisconsin won last six games vs Minnesota, covering three of last four; Gophers lost last four visits to Madison by 14-6-23-9 points. Badgers are 3-1 in Big 11, winning home games by 4-29 points- they're 4-4 as a favorite this season. Minnesota's only loss is at home to Michigan State by 12-- they're 2-0 vs spread as an underdog this season.

Home side won last four Washington-Oregon games; Huskies last its last two trips to Eugene by 8-13 points- favorites are 3-0-1 vs spread in last four series games played here. Ducks are 0-4 in Pac-10, losing at home to UCLA by 9, USC by 21. U-Dub is 2-1 in Pac-10, losing in triple OT to Cal Saturday, after nipping Stanford by a point in game before that.

Home side won last four USC-Arizona State games, with ASU losing its last two visits here, by 9-14 points; Trojans also beat Sun Devils 59-55 in Pac-10 tourney last March. Underdog is 9-2 vs spread in last 11 series games. ASU is 10-1 in last 11 games, 2-1 on road, winning at Stanford by 30, San Diego State by 7, losing 81-71 at Cal.

Nevada won six in row, nine of last 10 vs Boise State; Broncos lost last three visits here by 4-14-15 points (dogs are 3-1 vs spread in last four series games played here). Wolf Pack lost last two home games, but did sweep road trip at New Mexico State/La Tech last week; home favorites are just 2-9 against spread in WAC games this season.
