**Clemson at Virginia Tech**
--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Va. Tech (14-5 straight up, 7-7 against the spread) as a one-point favorite with a total of 144.
--Seth Greenberg’s team returns home in this spot after winning back-to-back road games over ranked teams. The Hokies went into Winston Salem and stunned top-ranked Wake Forest by a 78-71 count as 13-point underdogs. Then on Sunday night, they outlasted Miami 88-83 in overtime as seven-point ‘dogs. Bettors backing Va. Tech on the money line against the ‘Canes earned a lucrative plus-250 return (paid $250 on $100 wagers).
--Va. Tech has won five in a row, covering the number in four straight games. The Hokies are 7-1 SU and 2-3 ATS at home this season.
--Clemson (17-2 SU, 6-7-1 ATS) bounced back from its first two losses of the season by spanking Ga. Tech 73-59 Sunday night. The Tigers hooked up their backers, albeit barely, as 13-point home favorites. Terrence Oglesby paced the winners with 18 points, while Trevor Booker had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
--Clemson has won three in a row over the Hokies, including a 75-74 win in Blacksburg last year as a six-point underdog.
--Assuming Oliver Purnell’s team remains the underdog, it’s relevant to point out its 2-1 record both SU and ATS in ‘dog spots. As a one-point puppy earlier this year, Clemson went on the road and beat Illinois 76-74.
--The ‘over’ has been a big-time money maker for the Hokies all year, hitting at a 10-3 overall clip. They have seen the ‘over’ go 4-1 in their home assignments.
--The ‘under’ is 8-6 overall for Clemson.
**Alabama at Arkansas**
--LVSC opened Arkansas (12-5 SU, 5-5 ATS) as a 4 ½-point home ‘chalk.’
--Alabama (12-7 SU, 6-8 ATS) is playing its first game without Mark Gottfried as its head coach in more than a decade. Gottfried was fired – to be clear, he did not quit as some reported earlier this week – Monday morning a few weeks after fifth-year senior point guard Ronald Steele quit the team.
--John Pelphrey’s team was the nation’s biggest surprise going into SEC play. The Razorbacks had produced shocking upset wins over Oklahoma and Texas. In fact, they remain the lone team that has knocked off Blake Griffin and Co. However, the Hogs have gone 0-4 both SU and ATS versus SEC competition.
--Arkansas might be off its worst performance of the season, losing 73-51 at home against Auburn as a three-point ‘chalk.’ Courtney Fortson had 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the losing effort.
--Since Steele quit the team after a home win over LSU to open conference play, ‘Bama has lost four in a row ATS, dropping three of those games outright. The Tide is off a 61-51 loss to Kentucky as a six-point home underdog.
--Arkansas is 11-2 SU and 4-3 ATS at home.
--The ‘under’ is 6-4 overall for Arkansas, 4-3 in its home games. The ‘under’ has cashed in five consecutive games for the Razorbacks (regardless of venue).
--The ‘over’ is 9-5 overall for ‘Bama, 8-3 in its last 11 games.
--Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News reported Wednesday that VCU head coach Anthony Grant will not be interested in the Alabama job. Gentry Estes of the Mobile Press-Register filed this report on the latest coaching search tidbits for the Crimson Tide.
--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
**Saint Mary’s at Gonzaga**
--Gonzaga (14-4 SU, 9-7 ATS) has won six consecutive games, posting a 4-2 spread record during that stretch. Mark Few’s team is off a 93-60 win at Loyola-Marymount as a 28-point favorite. Matt Bouldin paced five Gonzaga players in double figures with 18 points. Austin Daye finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
--Saint Mary’s (17-1 SU, 8-5-1 ATS) went into San Diego last Thursday and thumped the Toreros by a 68-45 count as a four-point road favorite. It was the Gaels’ 15th straight victory, improving their ATS mark to 8-3-1 over that span.
--“Saint Mary’s has been covering nearly every time out lately,” LVSC oddsmaker Mike Seba told VI. “They looked really good in the win at San Diego last week. As for Gonzaga, it has an outstanding team, but they haven’t played particularly well lately.”
--LVSC opened Gonzaga (14-4 SU, 9-7 ATS) as a 7 ½-point favorite with a total of 142. Seba personally made the numbers 7 ½ and 142 ½. LVSC’s Chief Opertain Officer Kenny White had the number a good bit higher than the rest of the gang at LVSC, making the ‘Zags a 12-point ‘chalk.’
--Both schools are perfect in five conference games to date. Also, they are both 3-2 ATS in those five spots.
--Randy Bennett’s squad has one of the nation’s most underrated players in sophomore guard Patrick Mills, who averages a team-high 18.9 points per game and 4.1 assists per contest. Mills will be going up against one of the top on-the-ball defenders in the country in Gonzaga senior Jeremy Pargo. When Gonzaga won 88-76 at home last year, Mills went for 20 points, but Pargo had 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting. And Pargo’s usually more of a distributor than a scorer.
--Gonzaga is 6-1 SU and 3-2 ATS at home. The Bulldogs are facing their first situation as a single-digit home favorite. Meanwhile, St. Mary’s is an underdog for the first time this season.
--Gonzaga has seen the ‘under’ go 9-7 overall, 3-2 in its home games. However, the ‘over’ is on a 6-3 run for the Bulldogs (regardless of venue).
--The ‘under’ has cashed in five consecutive games for the Gaels.
--These WCC rivals have split the last four head-to-head meetings both SU and ATS. The ‘over’ is 3-1 in those four encounters.
--ESPN2 will have television coverage at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

Favorites are 5-2 vs spread in last seven series games. Gonzaga is 2-1 as WCC home favorite, winning by 17-42-34 points. Both teams are 5-0 in conference play. WCC home favorites are 4-7 vs spread.
Portland State (-9) beat Montana 72-45 Dec 20, their fourth straight win in series- they won 108-56 here LY. Vikings are 6-1 in Big Sky, 3-0 on road, winning by 12-1-14 points (2-1 as road fave)- they won last three games overall by 27-14-22 points. Montana is 4-0 at home in Big Sky, but they're 1-3 vs spread as a Big Sky underdog.

Clemson vs. Virginia Tech
I tell you what, Va Tech seems to be for real. After all, this team has moved to the top 65 power rankings, just beat top 50 Miami of Florida on the road in OT, too care of business against Wake Forrest on the road which not even Duke was able to do, beat BC at home and seems to be coming on strong in conference play. Clemson did take care of Georgia Tech at home, but they fell short to Wake Forrest at home by 10 and UNC by 24 on the road. Clemson is a top 25 power ranking team that hits the road once again and they did beat Illinois and routed Miami of Florida on the road which was very impressive. Heck, the fact that this team beat Illinois on the road Outright is truly impressive. This is going to be a great game, and I lean on Clemson a bit, but no thanks - I'm staying clear - but any team that can win at Illinois such as Clemson truly deserves respect.
Michigan State vs. Iowa
Michigan State comes off a huge win over Ohio State on the road by 11, but that was off of a shocking loss to Northwestern at home (the same team that only beat Indiana by a bucket at home). Iowa comes off a 4 point loss on the road but this is an eerily low line at 5.5 with over 70% of the public riding the Spartans. I'm not saying they don't cover here, b/c they did cover with a similar line at Minnesota when they covered. But, this was a similar line at Penn State on the road in which they did not cover, and now face an Iowa team at home that comes off a series of losses. no thanks.
Illinois vs. Minnesota
These two teams have not met this year. Illinois comes off a big win over Wisconsin and Ohio State at home and give them credit as they are a 17 win team this year. Keep in mind that Illinoi's two losses this year come to Michigan on the road by 10 and Michigan State on the road by 6. But, this team did beat Purdue and Vanderbilt on the road as well. For a team in Minnesota who lost to NW on the road and Purdue at home, Minnesota did not destroy Indiana as they only beat them by 4 (over 70% of the public took it up the chin in this game). Minnesota did beat Ohio State by 9 and Penn State by 20 at home and of course, even beat Louisville in neutral footing. Sure, I lean on my Illini here but I have a simple rule now, never get involved in any game that involves Tubby Smith as he defies all betting logic. I will take my chances elsewhere in another contest than deal with ol' Tubby who always seems to screw up any handicapping. no thanks.
