St. Joseph's at Villanova
By Brian Edwards

Bettors don’t have any can’t-miss games in college basketball tonight, but there are eight contests on the board. Most notably, we have Villanova (8-1 straight up, 3-3 against the spread) and St. Joseph’s (4-4 SU, 3-3 ATS) renewing their old-school rivalry at The Pavilion in Philadelphia.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened ‘Nova as a 9½-point favorite for its second Big Five game of the 2008-2009 campaign. The Wildcats won 69-47 at Penn as 14-point favorites on Dec. 2.

Jay Wright’s team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday when Texas won a 67-58 decision. The Longhorns took the cash as two-point favorites in the night-cap game of the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. The 125 combined points stayed ‘under’ the 134-point number rather easily.

Dante Cunningham led Villanova with 23 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocked shots. However, he had no help. The rest of his teammates combined to make just 10-of-36 shots from the floor. Scottie Reynolds finished with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists, but he also committed four turnovers and drained just 2-of-7 attempts from the field.

St. Joseph’s was also in action Tuesday night, capturing an 85-64 victory at Towson as a four-point road ‘chalk.’ Ahmad Nivins was the catalyst, scoring 25 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Darrin Govens added 22 points.

Phil Martelli’s team has four losses to date. St Joe’s lost twice at the Maui Classic to Texas (68-50) and Alabama (58-48). Before going to Hawaii, the Hawks lost at Holy Cross in overtime. Since returning, they went down to Creighton by a 69-58 count as 3½-point home favorites.

St. Joseph’s has won by double-digit margins in all four of its victories. In addition to thumping Towson, the Hawks have beat up on Rider, Indiana and Lehigh.

Villanova has played a cupcake schedule so far with its best win coming over Rhode Island at the Palestra.

The ‘under’ has cashed in five consecutive ‘Nova games with a total. Meanwhile, St. Joe’s has watched the ‘under’ go 4-2 overall.

ESPN2 will provide television coverage at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--I don’t remember the last time the SEC appeared to be this down. Georgia got a decent home win for the league over Va. Tech two nights ago. However, Mississippi St. lost at home last night to Charlotte, which came to Starkville with a 2-6 record.

--I took the 49ers last night catching seven points at The Hump. The win improved my record to 11-3-2 overall in college hoops this year.

--Wake Forest will be heavily favored in each game between now and a Jan. 3 trip to BYU. If the Cougars can find a way to win at Arizona St. on Dec. 20, expect BYU and Wake to be both be undefeated when they square off.

St. Joe’s (4-4, 3-3 ATS) at (15) Villanova (8-1, 3-3 ATS)

Villanova, coming off its first loss of the season in Tuesday’s the Jimmy V Classic, aims to get back on track when it plays host to cross-town and Big 5 rival St. Joe’s.

The Wildcats came up short against No. 6 Texas on Tuesday night, falling 67-58 as a two-point pup at Madison Square Garden, ending their eight-game SU winning streak to start the season. Poor shooting and turnovers plagued ‘Nova, which hit just 38 percent of its shots from the field (22.2 percent from 3-point range) and gave the ball away 19 times. Leading score Dante Cunningham (17.4 ppg) finished with 23 points, but Villanova fell 19 points below its season average (77.2) while giving up 10 more points than its average (57.9).

The Hawks ripped Towson 85-64 Tuesday as a four-point road ‘dog, bouncing back from a 69-58 home loss to perennial mid-major power Creighton. St. Joe’s hit a sizzling 51.7 percent from the floor (31 of 60) and 84.2 percent from the foul line (16 of 19), while outrebounding the Tigers 37-20. Top scorer Ahmad Nivins (19.1 ppg) had 25 points and nine rebounds, and Darrin Govens scored 22.

The Hawks sit at .500 on the season in most part because they’re scoring almost as many points (67 ppg) as they’re giving up (63.4).

Villanova is on a 6-2-1 ATS surge in this annual rivalry, though St. Joe’s pounded the Wildcats 77-55 last February laying 3½ points at home. The favorite has gone 5-0-1 ATS in the last six clashes.

The Wildcats are on a 3-8 ATS slide following a SU loss, but they are on positive pointspread upticks of 4-1 after a non-cover and 10-3-1 against Atlantic 10 opponents. Meanwhile, the Hawks are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 non-conference tilts, but they carry negative ATS trends of 1-4 in roadies, 1-4 against winning teams, 2-7 after a SU win and 2-5 after a spread-cover.

The under for Villanova is on streaks of 21-7-1 overall, 4-0 at home and 5-0 outside the Big East, and the under for St. Joe’s is on runs of 7-3 overall, 5-0 against winning teams, 6-2 against the Big East and 8-3 in non-conference contests. Finally, the total has stayed low in each of the last five meetings in this rivalry.

ATS ADVANTAGE: VILLANOVA and UNDER

NCAAB RESEARCH REPORT
By Indiancowboy

Troy vs. Middle Tennessee State

Note that the public is split on this game. This is actually a conference game and Middle Tennessee State has owned this team the last four times they have played covering all four such times including sweeping this team last year by winning by 6 and 23 points at home. Troy comes off a cover against Dayton where they lost by 17 points but did cover the 21 point spread. This team however lost by 37 points to LSU and that is frightening to say the least. Middle Tennessee State however only lost by 10 points to the highly potent Tennessee Volunteers and lost by just 8 points to Vandy as they ended up covering both games. Nevertheless, it is tough to lay this many a point especially considering this is a conference game and Troy has such a revenge angle from the past few years as well.

Fairfield vs. Fordham

Fairfield is 6-3, but note that Fordham has beat Fairfield the last four times they have played them in recent memory. In fact, the last time Fairfield beat this team was in 2001. I hate to lay this many points, but I have Fairfield as significantly the better team here and they have years of frustration to take out on Fordham from the losses of previous years. I can see Fairfield wining this game by DD and likely coevering.

St. Josephs vs. Villanova

Villanova comes off their first loss of the year and they draw St. Josephs here. St. Joe’s beat this team by 22 last year so Villanova undoubtedly remembers that game and loss. St. Josephs also comes off a nice 21 point win over Towson who Villanova beat by a similar score. I don’t lay this many points, but there are reasons why you could support both teams. If you support St. Josephs you have the fact that this team is playing on neutral footing and are catching around double-digits and of course only 35% of the public are backing them. If you like Villanova, you have the fact they come off their first loss of the year and lost to this team by 20+ points last year.

Long Beach State vs. Weber State

The public is split about evenly on this game. This is going to be a tight game all the way through. In particular, earlier this year when these two teams hooked up, Long Beach State beat this team at home in overtime. Plus, LB State comes off a tough loss at San Fran in overtime, but did cover big against Pepperdine and New Mexico. By the way, Weber State comes off a 30 point thumping at the hands of BYU so obviously they will be fired up for this game and will look to bounce-back against a team they have revenge against. Weber State is undefeated at home and they do have some bite because they lost by just a few points to Miami of Ohio earlier this year. I lean on Weber State slightly, but I’ll tell you what even though Weber State has revenge and comes off an ugly loss, it is tough to bet against a Long Beach State team coming off a loss.
