Pac-10 Tip Sheet
By Brad Young

The Pac-10 regular-season champion will have at least four losses, and the marquee matchup this week involves Washington and Arizona State. The Huskies are currently atop the heap at 11-4, and will be hosting a Sun Devils team that is 10-4.

California and UCLA are tied for third place with 9-5 records, while Arizona resides in fifth place at 8-6. The Conference of Champions is hoping these five teams will advance to the NCAA Tournament, but there is still two weeks of action remaining along with the Pac-10 Conference Tournament.

There are no Pac-10 teams currently ranked in the top-10, and just three teams in the top-25. Now let’s take a closer look at Thursday’s action.

**Arizona at Washington State**

-Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed Washington State as a three-point home ‘chalk’ over Arizona. This game is scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m. ET.

-Arizona (18-9 straight up, 15-11 against the spread) had its seven-game SU winning streak halted with Sunday’s loss to rival Arizona State as a 7 ½-point road underdog, 70-68. The Wildcats have covered their last four outings.

-Arizona shot 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field, and 43 percent (9-of-21) from behind the arc. Four starters reached double digits in scoring, led by point guard Nic Wise’s 17 points and seven assists while Chase Budinger added 13 and nine rebounds.

-The Wildcats are a modest 4-7 SU and 4-6 ATS away from home, dropping those affairs by an average score of 69-67.

-Washington State (14-13 SU, 9-16 ATS) snapped a two-game SU and ATS losing skid by upending UCLA Saturday as a 13-point road underdog, 82-81. The Cougars stopped a nine-game SU losing skid to the Bruins, and improved to 2-30 the last 32 meetings with UCLA.

-Wazzu shot an incredible 59 percent (30-of-51) from the field, and 53 percent from 3-point land (8-of-15). Senior guard Taylor Rohestie led all scorers with 33 points by shooting 5-of-7 from behind the arc.

-The Cougars maintain an 8-7 SU and 4-9 ATS home record, winning those matchups by an average score of 59-50.

-Arizona is 3-0 SU and ATS the previous three meetings with Wazzu after prevailing January 31 as a 4 ½-point home ‘chalk,’ 66-56.

**Southern Cal at California**

-LVSC opened California as a six-point home favorite over Southern Cal, with the total listed at 136. This contest is scheduled to tipoff at 10:30 p.m. ET.

-Southern Cal (16-10 SU, 11-13 ATS) dropped to 1-4 SU and ATS its last five games after falling to Washington Saturday as a 2 ½-point home ‘chalk,’ 60-51.

-The Trojans were outrebounded by the Huskies, 37-28, and shot just 38 percent (19-of-50) from the field. Dwight Lewis and Daniel Hackett each netted 11 points in the setback, while Taj Gibson added 10 and five assists.

-USC is 3-8 SU and 5-6 ATS on the road, dropping those games by an average score of 67-66.

-California (20-7 SU, 15-8 ATS) had strung together four wins in a row SU and ATS before Saturday’s setback to Oregon State as a 4 ½-point road favorite, 65-54.

-The Golden Bears entered halftime with a seven-point advantage, 28-21, before getting outscored in the second half, 44-26. Cal finished the contest by shooting just 33 percent (17-of-52) from the field, and 15 percent (3-of-20) from 3-point land. Guard Theo Robertson paced the offense with 15 points and four rebounds, while Jamal Boykin added 11 and seven.

-The Golden Bears sport a solid 15-1 SU and 10-2 ATS home record, winning those matchups by an average score of 79-63.

-USC is 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS the last five meetings with Cal after prevailing Jan. 31 as a five-point home ‘chalk,’ 73-62. That victory by the Trojans ended a two-game ATS losing skid in this series.

-USC guard Dwight Lewis (not suspended) and guard Daniel Hackett (not suspended) are ‘probable’ against the Golden Bears, while forward Marcus Johnson (rotator cuff) is ‘doubtful.’

-Cal center Jordan Wilkes (concussion) is ‘probable’ versus the Trojans, while forward Harper Kamp (undisclosed) is ‘questionable.’

**UCLA at Stanford**

-LVSC lists UCLA as a 6 ½-point road ‘chalk’ over Stanford, with the total set at 140. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET.

-UCLA (20-7 SU, 12-13 ATS) fell to 1-3 SU and 0-3-1 ATS its last four outings after Saturday’s setback to Washington State as a 13-point home favorite, 82-81.

-The Bruins lost despite shooting 53 percent (29-of-55) from the field. Four starters reached double digits in scoring, led by forward Nikola Dragovic’s 23 points and Darren Collison’s 20 and eight assists.

-UCLA is a modest 5-5 SU and 4-6 ATS away from home, winning those affairs by an average score of 68-67.

-Stanford (15-10 SU, 13-9 ATS) is currently mired in a three-game losing funk SU and ATS after getting upset by Oregon as a five-point road ‘chalk,’ 68-60. The Ducks were winless in Pac-10 play until that contest.

-Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds, but the Cardinal shot just 40 percent (21-of-53) from the field. Guard Landry Fields had 19 points and eight rebounds in the loss, while forward Lawrence Hill contributed 18 and five.

-Stanford sports a 12-3 SU and 8-4 ATS home ledger, winning those matchups by an average score of 76-65.

-UCLA is 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS the previous five encounters with Stanford after prevailing Jan. 31 as an 11-point home favorite, 97-63.

**Arizona State at Washington**

-LVSC installed Washington as a 4 ½-point home favorite over Arizona State, with the total set at 139. FOX Sports Net will provide coverage of this contest beginning at 11:00 p.m. ET.

-Arizona State (21-5 SU, 14-8 ATS) sports a 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS record its last five games after holding off Arizona Sunday as a 7 ½-point home ‘chalk,’ 70-68.

-The Sun Devils shot a robust 53 percent (24-of-45) from the field, and 43 percent (13-of-30) from 3-point land. Guard James Harden stepped up with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jeff Pendergraph added 16 and 12.

-Washington (20-7 SU, 16-8 ATS) rebounded from its loss to UCLA by beating USC Saturday as a 2 ½-point road underdog, 60-51.

-The Huskies prevailed despite shooting just 38 percent (22-of-58) from the field, and 10 percent (1-of-10) from behind the arc. Forward Quincy Pondexter was the only Washington player to reach double digits in scoring, netting 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting.

-The Huskies sport a 14-1 SU and 9-4 ATS home record, winning those affairs by an average score of 82-67.

-Washington is 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS the past six encounters with Arizona State after winning the Jan. 31 as a six-point road underdog, 84-71.

Game of the day: Arizona State at Washington
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

Hanging from beams above Washington's home floor is a banner recognizing every major accomplishment by the Huskies basketball program.

Except there's one glaring omission: Washington's 1953 Pacific Coast Conference title isn't listed.

Why is that relevant in 2009? Because the absent 1953 team represents the last time Washington won an outright conference title. Accomplishing that feat in 2009 can become far more plausible for the No. 21 Huskies with a win Thursday night over No. 14 Arizona State. Books have tagged the Huskies as 4-point home favorites.

The Huskies (20-7, 11-4) hold a half-game lead over the Sun Devils (21-5, 10-4) in the conference race. A victory would put them two games up in the win column with only two left to play, and depending on what happens with the other conference teams on Thursday, the Huskies could potentially clinch the conference crown as early as Saturday.

All this from a team picked to finish fifth in the conference race before the season.

"This is probably the biggest game I have had since I have been a Husky," said Washington's bruising forward Jon Brockman.

The Huskies star senior knows a thing or two about big games. Brockman's first season on Washington's campus was capped by the Huskies run to NCAA regional semifinals and a thrilling overtime loss to Connecticut in the round of 16. Washington hasn't returned to the NCAA tournament since, and a win over the Sun Devils would only bolster a resume that already has Washington headed to the tournament.

It would also be a major step in erasing the Huskies massive gap in conference crowns.

Washington tied for the Pac-10 title in both 1984 and 1985 and won the Pac-10 tournament title in 2005. Otherwise, the Huskies history for the last half-century is dotted with a few second- and third-place finishes and plenty of seasons in the bottom half of the league.

No matter how things shake out with the other teams chasing the Huskies - ASU, UCLA and California - if Washington wins its final three games, the conference title belongs to them.

"It's fun to be involved in these types of contests," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "That's what any competitor plays for to play against the best and play at the highest level."

The Sun Devils would like nothing better than to spoil the Huskies party plans and set up the possibility of having their own party in a little over a week. While Washington's conference title history is relatively paltry, the Sun Devils' is nonexistent. Since joining the Pac-10 for the 1978-79 season, Arizona State has never won a conference title, finishing second twice.

Erasing that history, coupled with a ton of momentum and having won decisively in Seattle a year ago, is fueling the Sun Devils' confidence.

"This is a great situation we're in. We have a great team, great chemistry, and we're rebuilding a program. It feels that we're all doing it together and having fun with it too," ASU star James Harden said. "It's definitely at the top. It's a great program; we have great coaches, great players, and great teammates. Overall, it is an exciting buzz around here and it is unbelievable."

Arizona State got a wake-up call at the end of January courtesy of the Huskies. As part of a lost weekend at home - the Sun Devils lost to Washington State previously - the Huskies convincingly handled the Sun Devils in an 84-71 victory. Washington got 30 points from Justin Dentmon and another 25 from Isaiah Thomas, while holding Harden to just 15 points.

But the Sun Devils have rolled off five straight, including last Sunday's 70-68 win over rival Arizona.

"We got a lot of stuff left to do in these last four games," ASU forward Jeff Pendergraft said. "They're going to be the biggest games we have; they could make or break our season and cost or get us a conference championship. That feels real good to say."

Thursday's Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards

**Xavier at St. Joseph’s**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Xavier (22-5 straight up, 13-10-2 against the spread) as a 3 ½-point favorite with a total of 132.

--Sean Miller’s team is in the midst of a 1-4-2 ATS slide. The Muskateers are off a 71-53 home win over George Washington as 18-point favorites. C.J. Anderson scored a team-high 14 points for the winners.

--St. Joseph’s (14-12 SU, 11-13 ATS) has lost four consecutive games both SU and ATS, including Saturday’s 70-69 loss to UMass as a 6 ½-point home ‘chalk.’ Ahmad Nivins had 21 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

--Phil Martelli’s squad is barely over .500 at home (6-5 SU). Even worse, the Hawks are 3-8 ATS at home. They lost a 61-59 decision to Temple as one-point underdogs in their lone spot as home ‘dogs this year.

--Xavier is in first place in the A-10 with a 10-3 record. The Muskateers are just one-half game in front of both Rhode Island and Temple.

--St. Joe’s has won back-to-back games against Xavier and three of the last five. Even better, the Hawks are on a 5-0 ATS run when they face the Muskateers.

--The ‘under’ is 13-10-1 overall for St. Joe’s, 6-5 in its home games. Meanwhile, Xavier has seen the ‘under’ go 13-12-1 overall.

--The underdog has taken the cash in eight consecutive head-to-head meetings between these Atlantic-10 rivals. The ‘under’ is 6-2 in the last eight St. Joseph’s-Xavier encounters.

--Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**Purdue at Michigan**

--LVSC opened Purdue (21-6 SU, 11-12 ATS) as a two-point favorite with a total of 132.

--Michigan (17-11 SU, 11-10-1 ATS) has been outstanding at home all year long, compiling a 13-3 SU record and an 8-3 ATS mark. If the Wolverines can win this game in Ann Arbor, they will make a major impression on the selection committee.

--Matt Painter’s team has won four in a row, including Saturday’s 81-67 home win over Indiana. The Boilers failed to cover the number as 21 ½-point favorites. E’Twaun Moore scored a game-high 26 points.

--Purdue is 16th in this week’s AP Top 25, 17th in LVSC’s Top 30. The Boilermakers have a balanced offensive attack led by Moore, who averages a team-high 14.0 PPG.

--Purdue owns an 8-2 spread record in its last 12 games against Michigan. This rivalry has seen the ‘under’ cash in three consecutive meetings.

--The ‘over’ is 7-4 for Michigan at home, 10-10-1 in its home games.

--The ‘under’ is 12-11 overall for Purdue, 4-1 in its last five outings.

--ESPN will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Gonzaga at Santa Clara**

--Bettors get a late-night option from the WCC when Santa Clara welcomes Gonzaga. Most books are listing Mark Few’s team as a 10-point favorite. LVSC sent the total out at 132.

--Gonzaga (21-5 SU, 12-12 ATS) has won four straight games, covering huge spreads in consecutive blowout wins over Pepperdine and Loyola-Marymount. The ‘over’ has cash in each of the Bulldogs’ last four games. Josh Heytvelt led the ‘Zags in the win over the Waves, scoring 28 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

--Santa Clara (14-15 SU, 10-12-1 ATS) is tough at home, posting a 10-2 SU record and a 5-3-1 ATS mark. The Broncos return home in this spot for the first time since Feb. 7. Since then, they have lost two of three on the road, going 0-3 ATS in the process.

--Santa Clara is led by senior center John Bryant, who is averaging 18.0 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. He had 17 points and 12 boards in Saturday’s 67-66 overtime loss at San Francisco.

--The ‘under’ is 11-10 overall for Santa Clara, 4-4 in its home assignments.

--The ‘over’ is on an incredible 10-1 run in the last 11 head-to-head meetings between these WCC rivals.

--ESPN2 will provide television coverage at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--I was extremely annoyed that ESPN had Jay Bilas doing last night’s Duke-Maryland game. Nobody wants to hear that chafe Dookie while rooting against his alma mater.

--Wednesday’s biggest winner was unquestionably Va. Tech, which went into Clemson and avenged a tough January loss to the Tigers by capturing an 80-77 victory as a 10-point road underdog. The Hokies hooked up money-line backers with a lucrative plus-450 payout (paid $450 on $100 wagers).

--Marquette senior guard Dominic James is done for the season after fracturing his foot during Wednesday’s home loss to UConn. That’s a huge blow to the Golden Eagles, who had to play without Jerel McNeal in the postseason last season. James had an outstanding collegiate career.

Tips and Trends

West Virginia at Cincinnati

West Virginia (-5, O/U 134.5): Former Cincinnati head coach Bob Huggins will be honored on Thursday despite a controversial ending to his career at the school. Huggins was ousted by the President of the university prior to the 2005-06 season following a drunk-driving arrest after putting the Bearcats on the map again as an elite basketball program. He went on to coach Kansas State before returning to his alma mater West Virginia. Now he returns to Cincy and expects an emotional homecoming. “I’m sure it will when I walk in the building,” Huggins said. “I have a lot of memories there. I had the most wonderful kids in the world. I had terrific experiences there.”

West Virginia is 4-1 SU & ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-3 in West Virginia's last 10 road games.

Key Injuries - G Joe Mazzulla (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 70

Cincinnati: The Bearcats are fighting for their NCAA tournament lives and may be battling their own home crowd, many of whom are expected to be cheering for Huggins. They are currently tied with Syracuse for eighth place in the Big East and realize they need to win this game at home in order to have any hopes of making it to the Big Dance. “If my guys ever worried about the crowds, we’d have packed it in a long time ago,” Cincy head coach Mick Cronin said. “It’s not like we’ve been selling out every night.”

Cincy is 4-1 SU & ATS in its last 5 home games.
The OVER is 9-1-1 in Cincy's last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 65

#16 Purdue at Michigan

Purdue (-2.5, O/U 124): The last time these teams met back on January 31st at Mackey Arena, Boilermakers guard Chris Kramer was knocked out with a vicious elbow by Michigan's Manny Harris, who got ejected from the game for his actions. Purdue ended up winning that game 67-49 but dropped two straight after that before starting the team's current four-game winning streak. “We don’t retaliate, we just get `Ws’,” said Kramer. The Boilermakers sit just one game behind Michigan State in the loss column for first place in the Big Ten.

Purdue is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 60 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Michigan: The Wolverines are 13-3 at home this season and likely need to win their last three games in order to have any shot at making the NCAA tournament. That makes this meeting with Purdue a must-win situation, although Michigan has dropped three straight games against ranked opponents since beating former #4 Duke 81-73 back on December 6th. The Wolverines finish up the regular season with tough road games at Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Michigan is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 home games.
The UNDER is 8-3-1 in Michigan's last 12 games overall.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 57

Thursday Research
By Indiancowboy

Minnesota vs. Illinois (Big 10)

Minnesota comes off a big rout of 27 over Northwestern at home. That was a win to get revenge from an earlier season loss at NW. They face an Illinois team who they beat by 23 points earlier this season when they defeated them 59-36 in Illinois's worst out put of points all year. It's not as if Minnesota has been getting blown out on the road, but they have been losing SU as they lost by 12 to Michigan on the road, 5 to Penn State, 6 to Ohio State and 29 to Michigan State. In fact, the only road games that Minnesota has won has been against Iowa and Indiana - the bottom rung of the Big10. Illinois has had huge blowout wins against Ohio State, Michigan and Purdue ath ome so I can see them getting it done here as they were even able to beat Ohio State when OSU had revenge in that contest at Ohio State.

Purdue vs. Michigan (Big 10)

Purdue is laying about 2.5 points here on the road at Michigan. The public favors Purdue slightly more on the highway here. Purdue last played this tema and won by 18 at home so Michigan does have revenge. To Purdue's credit, they did beat Minnesota and Wisconsin on the road and they are 10-4 in conference play while Michigan is 7-8 in conference play. Although a quality win here would be huge for Michigan. To Michigan's credit they did beat NW twice this year, beat Minnesota, Penn and Illinois at home. Plus, Michigan comes off a tough loss on the road in OT to Iowa so they are looking to boucne-back here. Sure, Purdue is the better team but Michigan will likely get some home cooking calls today and I'd just rather stay away. And, this game is on ESPN which typically favors the home team and in this case, the home dog.

La Salle vs. Temple (Atlantic 10)

La Salle faces a Temple team who they lost to by 7 at home and now face on the road. Temple comes off a big 14 point win over St. Bonny at home, beat Fordham by 27 at home, Rhode Island by 6, Richmond by 9 and is in fact, 8-1 at home with their only loss being to Miami of Ohio at home earlier this year. I actually think this is a good spot for La Salle coming off a series of losses to hang within single digits here.

Xavier vs. St. Josephs (Atlantic 10)

The question that begs here is if Xavier's road woes continue or not. This team has fallen to Duquesne, Charlotte and Dayton and now faces St. Josephs in a similar context. These two teams have not met this year but St. Josephs just comes off a 1 point loss to Umass at home by a score of 69-70, they lost to St. Louis on the road by 2, to Temple at home by 2 and did beat Rhode Island to their credit in Triple OT at home. Believe it or not, I think Xavier's road woes continue and Xavier is likely to cover or win outright here.

Quick thoughts on the Southern Conference:

Georgia Southern vs. Elon

Just be wary of this game. You have an Elon team that is favored by 75% of the public, and did beat GS earlier this year on the road by 3. GS has revenge but is just 1-11 on the road, nevertheless, I can't take a huge publci favorite or a road team in southern that has revenge. no thanks.

Furman vs. Citadel

Conroy's team is just unbelievable right now and the Citadel is my dark horse to win the southern conference this year over Davidson. Yes, the Citadel. They beat Furman in OT earlier this year on the road, so Furman does have revenge, but the question remains if the Citadel will have a let down here after the huge win over Davidson.

App. State vs. Chattanooga

This seems like a good spot for App. State to get revenge against Chattanooga since they lost by 3 to them on the road earlier this year - 2/3rds of the public agree as well. I will tell you this though Chattanooga did beat the Citadel on the road earlier this year and considering the Citadel has been rock solid this year that is impressive. Plus, this team comes off a loss to Charleston so they will look to bounce-back. Just staying away here.

Wofford vs. Charleston

A good dog today - If you are looking for a good road dog today, look no further than Wofford as they fell just short to Charleston earlier this year at home by a bucket and now face them catching 8.5 points here on the road, this is a game where they likely can hang tough.

*upset watch - I wouldnt' be surprised to see St. Joseph defeat or stay inside the number against Rider*
