Big Ten Tip Sheet
By Judd Hall

People ride the Big Ten Conference for not having the most exciting of college basketball to watch. While the league may not be as exciting as colonic with Rush Limbaugh, it has garnered the respect of the bracket experts. That’s because eight of the league’s 11 squads have been projected to get into the field of 65.

The opening round of the league’s tournament gets underway at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis this Thursday. Three of the teams participating in the first round have hopes of getting an NCAA bid. However, advancing in the conference tourney has taken on greater importance after the Cleveland State took the automatic bid for the Horizon League. The Vikings’ victory over Butler ensured that there will be one less “at large” berth available.

So who which teams will keep their NCAA Tournament dreams alive? Let’s take a look at the Big Ten’s tripleheader to find out.

Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Northwestern Wildcats

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants has tabbed Minnesota (21-9 straight up, 11-13-1 against the spread) as a two-point “chalk” with a total of 120.

--The Golden Gophers stormed out of the gates by winning 18 of their first 21 games of the 2008-2009 campaign. But they came unglued down the stretch with a 3-6 SU mark…Even worse for us is that Tubby Smith’s squad went 2-7 ATS.

--Despite the slump, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi currently has Minnesota as a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Yet they desperately need a win here to help eliminate doubt to making it to the big dance.

--Northwestern (17-12 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) could be one of those teams that will be thinking “what might have been” when all is said and done. They closed out the regular season with a 4-4 SU record, but went 5-3 ATS. In those four late defeats, two of them were by no more than five points.

--The Wildcats’ season finale saw them almost erase a 12-point deficit at Value City Arena against Ohio State. Unfortunately, Northwestern fell to the Buckeyes as a 5 ½-point road ‘dog on March 8, 52-47. Craig Moore scored 18 points and picked up four boards for the ‘Cats in a losing effort.

--These squads wound up splitting the season series, with the home team covering the all-important spread. The Golden Gophers did destroy NU in the most recent meeting as six-point home favorites on Feb. 22, 72-45. Minnesota held the Wildcats to just 30 percent shooting from the floor and a 36-18 rebounding edge.

--The betting shops don’t think either side has a particularly strong chance at cutting down the nets in Indy. Minnesota is listed at 20/1to win the tournament, while the Wildcats are posted at 30/1 by Bodog.

--The ‘over’ is 4-2 in the last six head-to-head meetings.

--Big Ten Network will broadcast this game 12:00 p.m. EDT. The winner gets to face the Spartans on Friday at noon.

Michigan Wolverines vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

--LVSC installed the Wolverines as 5 ½-points with the total rolling in at 118.

--Michigan (19-12 SU, 14-10-1 ATS) has had a great season in the second year of the John Beilein Era. However, they’ve been inconsistent down the stretch in alternating wins and losses in its last four games. As far as we’re concerned, the Maize and Blue has been great with a 3-1 ATS record in those tilts…And are 7-2 ATS in their last nine.

--While the Wolverines are preparing for a trip to the big dance, Iowa (15-16 SU, 15-10 ATS) will be content to just play out the string. What has to bother Hawkeye fans is that they opened the year 9-3 SU and 5-3 ATS against non-conference opponents. Playing teams from the Big Ten, however, killed them as they went 5-13 SU during the regular season. Bettors have enjoyed them in league play with a 10-8 ATS mark.

--The Hawkeyes have been a serious ‘under’ play recently with a 5-3 run. Michigan, on the other hand, have watched the ‘over’ go 5-1 in its last six matches.

--The Wolverines do possess the better record, but they wound up dropping a 10-60 decision in overtime in Iowa City as one-point road pups on Feb. 22.

--Michigan has won and covered all three clashes they’ve had with the Hawkeyes in the conference tournament.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN2. The winner gets to square off with Illinois on Friday night.

Penn State Nittany Lions at Indiana Hoosiers

--LVSC opened the line up for this match with Penn State (21-10 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) as a seven-point favorite with a total of 123.

--Indiana (6-24 SU, 12-12 ATS) knew that Tom Crean’s first season in Bloomington would be a rough one, but I don’t know if they thought it would be this bad. The Hoosiers are dead last in the league for scoring offense (60.4 points per game) and defense (70.8 PPG).

--The poor stats certainly lend themselves to the Hoosiers to winning just one game in Big Ten play. At least they’re 9-9 ATS to look decent for bettors.

--The Nittany Lions need to win this game in the worst way to make the NCAA Tournament. Lunardi has placed them as one of his “last four in.” That means they should make the big dance, but they can’t afford a bad performance on the hardwood. While his picks aren’t set in stone, Lunardi has a great track record when it comes to setting the field.

--While the Hoosiers have dominated the overall series, Penn State is on a 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS run head-to-head. The ‘under’ has cashed tickets in all three games.

--Penn State has only been listed as a road “chalk” three times this season. But they’ve made the most of that role by going 3-0 SU and ATS this year.

--If you’re looking for Indiana to show up in this game as a road/neutral underdog, you’ll be disappointed. That’s because they’re 0-14 SU and 6-8 ATS in this spot.

--You can catch this game on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. The winner gets the right to face the Boilermakers on Friday night.

ACC tournament: Round 1 preview and picks
By DAVID PAYNE

ACC tournament games are being played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Miami Hurricanes

The loser’s bubble bursts. The winner is rewarded with a second-round showdown with No. 1 North Carolina.

So who will survive Thursday’s elimination game?

It’s hard to put too much faith in either the Hokies or the Canes.

Virginia Tech has lost six of seven straight up and seven of nine against the spread.

Miami hasn’t been much better and has dropped its last two meetings with the Hokies.

Virginia Tech held the Hurricanes leading scorer Jack McClinton to just 16 points in a convincing win over Miami in last year’s ACC tournament.

The Hokies contained McClinton again this season, holding him to 20 points in an overtime win at Miami.

After McClinton, only Dwayne Collins averages in double figures for the Hurricanes.

In a close game, take the more balanced and better free-shooting team.

Final score prediction: Virginia Tech 70, Miami 66

Clemson Tigers vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

It’s been a frustrating year for the Yellow Jackets, who all too often follow up glimpses of glory with an array of turnovers. Tech’s 16.8 turnovers per game are the most in the ACC.

Clemson took advantage of the Yellow Jackets’ turnover issues in a pair of double-digit wins over Georgia Tech this season.

But the Tigers don’t exactly arrive in Atlanta on a roll. Clemson has lost three of four entering the tournament.

The Yellow Jackets will be playing just down the road from their campus, but the Georgia Dome does not produce much of a home-court advantage.

Georgia Tech is also banged up in the backcourt, with both starters Iman Shumpert and Mo Miller battling injuries.

Final score prediction: Clemson 80, Georgia Tech 65

Maryland Terrapins vs. North Carolina State Wolfpack

With their NCAA tournament lives hanging by a thread, the Terrapins flopped in Saturday’s devastating loss at Virginia.

Maryland blew a 13-point lead and didn’t come close to solving Virginia’s zone defense. (Were you watching, Sidney Lowe?)

To make things worse, the Terrapins’ leading scorer Greivis Vasquez made a bonehead play in the waning moments. Instead of running the called play for a potential tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, Vasquez drove for a lay-up.

“I should be able to run a good play, but I got confused,” Vasquez told the Washington Post. “I didn't know what we were running.”

It resulted in Terrapins’ third loss in four games.

Their only win during that stretch did come at North Carolina State, however.

Still, the Wolf Pack has been much more competitive down the stretch.

Watch for Vaquez to try to force things to make up for his blunder and the Terrapins to get frustrated by scrappy N.C. State.

Final score prediction: North Carolina State 68, Maryland 65

Boston College Eagles vs. Virginia Cavaliers

Dave Leitao’s young Cavaliers have taken their medicine throughout ACC play. But they’ve shown signs of improvement and resiliency, especially in their comeback win over Maryland Saturday.

That’s why Boston College, which is likely in the Dance, better pay attention to the Cavs.

The Golden Eagles own a 10-point win at Virginia February 4 and are the more experienced and talented team.

On paper, BC has too much firepower for the Cavaliers, who are the lowest scoring team in the ACC. So while this game could stay close early, look for the Eagles to hit their free throws down the stretch (72 percent from the line) and hold off Virginia.

Final score prediction: Boston College 72, Virginia 64

Big Ten conference tourney: Round 1 preview and picks
By DAVE CAREY

All games being held at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana

Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Northwestern Wildcats (-2, 120.5)

The ninth-seeded Wildcats (17-12 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) need this game to have any chance of making next week’s NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The eighth-seeded Golden Gophers (21-9 SU, 11-13-1 ATS) blew their chance to all but lock up an at-large bid by blowing a second-half lead and falling to Michigan at home, 67-64 on Saturday.

Northwestern, which leads the conference in three-point shooting at 38.8 percent, is led by Kevin Cobble (15.3 ppg) and Craig Moore (14.4 ppg). The duo combined for 42 points in a 74-65 win in Evanston, Ill., on Jan. 18, but totalled a meager eight in a 72-45 loss at Minnesota on Feb. 22.

Minnesota, led by Lawrence Westbrook (12.4 ppg), has lost six of its past 10, but outrebounded the Wildcats in the team’s previous two meetings. The Gophers are third in the Big 10 in rebounding margin (plus-2.9), compared to last place Northwestern (minus-5.1).

Look for Minnesota to rebound -- both literally and figuratively.

Final score prediction: Minnesota 66, Northwestern 59

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines (-5.5, 118.5)

Which Manny Harris will show up for the seventh-seeded Wolverines (19-12 SU, 14-10-1 ATS)? Blue and gold fans hope it will be the Harris that averages 17.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.

But then there’s the other Harris -- the one who scored just nine points on 3-of-13 shooting in a 70-60 overtime loss at Iowa that saw the team’s leader benched in the extra session.

The 10th-seeded Hawkeyes (15-16 SU, 15-10 ATS) also hope the Harris who had 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in a 64-49 win over Iowa at Crisler Arena stays back at home in Ann Arbor.

Too bad for Iowa that the real Manny Harris is coming to the Big 10 Tournament.

Final score prediction: Michigan 59, Iowa 52

Indiana Hoosiers vs. Penn State Nittany Lions (-9, 122.5)

Nothing is easy for the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions (21-10 SU, 13-10-1 ATS). Penn State had a chance to secure an at-large bid for the first time since 2001 when it went to Iowa on Saturday, but two overtimes later the Nittany Lions remain firmly on the bubble after a tough loss.
And as terrible as the 11th-seeded Hoosiers (6-24 SU, 12-12 ATS) have been, don’t expect them to roll over.

Penn State, led by sophomore guard Talor Battle (17.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and senior forward Jamelle Cornley (13.9 ppg, 6.2 rpg), has struggled against the Hoosiers this season.
The team barley escaped Assembly Hall with a 65-55 win on Jan. 17 and rallied in the second half for a 61-58 win in State College late last month.

The Hoosiers, led by Devan Dumes (12.7 ppg), however, are anything but hot, having lost nine straight and 20 of their past 21 games.

Look for their season to come to a merciful end, but not before making the Nittany Lions sweat.

Final score prediction: Penn State 64, Indiana 53

SEC conference tourney: Preview and picks
By DAVID JONES

Southeastern Conference tournament games are being played in Tampa, FL.

Mississippi Rebels vs. Kentucky Wildcats (-6.5)

Kentucky's run of 17 straight NCAA tournament bids will come to an end with a defeat in this contest. The Wildcats are limping into the SEC tourney with four consecutive defeats to close out the regular season. Even with SEC scoring leader Jodie Meeks (24.7 ppg) leading the way, Kentucky has struggled to establish any consistency under second-year head coach Billy Gillispie.

The Rebels ended a nine-game losing streak to Kentucky with an 85-80 victory in Oxford in late January. Mississippi has also been an inconsistent squad since scoring leader Chris Warren (19.6 ppg) was lost for the season with a torn ACL in December. Junior guard David Huertas (18.2 ppg) has stepped up to put the Rebels (16-14) in a position to get an NIT bid, if they can't win the SEC tournament.

Without a supporting cast to aid Meeks and sophomore forward Patrick Patterson (18.4 ppg), the Wildcats have to rely too much on their stars to win. Mississippi (16-10 ATS) has a depth advantage that will enable the Rebs' to take this one down to the wire.

Final score prediction: Kentucky 73, Mississippi 70

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (-9.5)

Can Georgia make another SEC tourney run? The defending conference tournament champions do have a little confidence coming into this contest. After an 0-9 start in SEC play, Georgia went a respectable 3-4 to conclude the regular season. Offense is a primary concern for a squad that shoots less than 41 percent from the field. However, a 90-point outburst to upset Kentucky last week is something to build on for interim head coach Pete Herrmann.

A winning SEC record would usually put a team in a good position to merit Tournament consideration. But in a down year for the league, Mississippi State (19-12, 9-7 SEC) will probably need to get to the championship game to have a real shot for an NCAA bid. Like Georgia, Mississippi State doesn't have an elite player but four starters are averaging in double figures.

Georgia will need to grind out the tempo of this game to hang around against a solid Mississippi State defensive club (opponents shoot less than 40 percent from the field).

Final score prediction: Mississippi State 69, Georgia 62

Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (+ 2.5)

The young Commodores (no seniors) showed some fight to finish the regular season. Vandy won its last three outings, including a win at regular season SEC champion LSU, to finish with a .500 mark in conference play. Center A.J. Ogilvy (15.7 ppg) and guard Jermaine Beal (12.7 ppg) have developed into one of the better inside-outside combos in college hoops.

In a parallel to the situation at Georgia, the Crimson Tide have gained some momentum heading into Tampa. Alabama won four of their last five outings under the direction of interim head coach Phillip Pearson. The versatile Alonzo Gee (14.8 ppg) is good enough to keep the Crimson Tide in most games.

Vandy came from seven behind at halftime to win the regular season matchup between these two clubs in Nashville. While these squads are pretty equal in their overall talent, the difference is the big man Ogilvy.

Final score prediction: Vanderbilt 75, Alabama 71

Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Florida Gators (-9.5)

After coasting through their non-conference slate with a 12-1 mark, the Razorbacks were viewed as a capable squad heading into SEC play. The viewpoint is quite different after a woeful 2-14 SEC record for Arkansas. A mediocre defense has been the main factor in the team’s struggles.

The Florida Gators will probably need at least two wins in Tampa to get into the NCAA tournament. There have been some growing pains for head coach Billy Donovan since consecutive NCAA titles in 2006 and 2007. With a roster that features five sophomores and six freshmen, Florida's inexperience has shown up from time to time.

Even in a desperation game in their home state, it is hard to back a club that doesn't always play to its talent level. Florida will get the victory to stay in the NCAA chase but the margin will be close.

Final score prediction: Florida 76, Arkansas 68

SEC Tournament Primer
By Brian Edwards

How weak is the SEC this season? Consider this: If Florida and South Carolina lose their first games in Tampa this week, there’s an excellent chance that only two – TWO! – schools from the conference will hear their names called on Selection Sunday.

Tennessee and LSU are the league’s only locks for the NCAA Tournament at this point. South Carolina is considered “in” by most experts, but that would instantly change if it were to lose to the Mississippi State-Georgia winner.

As for the Gators, they certainly have to beat Arkansas Thursday night. If that happens, the UF-Auburn game might very well be the equivalent of a play-in game for an at-large invite.

For the first time since 1990, the SEC Tournament is returning to the Sunshine State. I was at the ’90 tourney in Orlando, where an Alabama team led by Robert Horry and Melvin Cheatum cut the nets down after beating Ole Miss 70-51 in the finals.

This year’s event is in Tampa at the St. Pete Times Forum. Sportsbook.com has Tennessee and LSU listed as the 3/1 co-favorites. The offshore website has South Carolina with 5/1 odds, while the league’s hottest team (Auburn) has a 10/1 number. The field is an even-money wager.

Other books are offering odds for each team. LVSC released Florida at 7/2 and Kentucky at 8/1. The rest of the schools have the following numbers: Mississippi St. (12/1), Vandy (25/1), Ole Miss (25/1), Alabama (30/1), Arkansas (50/1) and Georgia (100/1).

The Dawgs are the longshots even though they won the 2008 SEC Tournament with an improbable run that included two different venues and three games over a 28-hour stretch. Several remaining players like Jeremy Price, Terrance Woodbury, Albert Jackson and Zac Swansey were instrumental in cutting the next downs last year, but head coach Dennis Felton is no longer around after being pink slipped way back in January.

The Dawgs endured another disastrous regular season, but they have shown some life in wins vs. Florida, vs. Vandy and at Kentucky. Woodbury went for 32 points against the Gators and dropped 30 at Rupp Arena. On nights when he’s playing like that, UGA could even cause damage this weekend.

In other words, there’s never been an SEC Tournament that’s so wide open. VegasInsider.com handicapper Andy Iskoe has a pair of teams that he’s endorsing to bettors who are looking to take a chance on a team with long odds.

“I like the way Alabama and Vanderbilt are playing right now,” Iskoe said. “The winner of this game gets Tennessee, and there’s no other team in the league that has underachieved more than [UT]. The Vandy-Alabama winner really could win this tournament.”

Keep in mind that the Vols have traditionally been dreadful at the conference tournament and that hasn’t changed during Bruce Pearl’s otherwise wildly-successful tenure. UT hasn’t won the event since 1979.

Another burning question from Lexington (KY.) to Tampa is the status of Kentucky second-year head coach Billy Clyde Gillispie. Might his job be in danger at this early juncture if the ‘Cats lose to their first-round foe, Ole Miss?

Auburn is the league’s hottest team, winning eight of its last nine games, including a blowout of LSU on the Plains in the regular-season finale. Most importantly, Jeff Lebo’s squad has covered the number in nine consecutive games.

The Bayou Bengals were the class of the SEC all year, compiling a 13-3 mark versus conference foes, but they lost their last two games (vs. Vandy and at Auburn). Nevertheless, Iskoe is still high on LSU.

“There was nothing at stake in those two late-season losses because LSU had already clinched the SEC’s regular-season title,” Iskoe said. “I think LSU can do damage in the big tournament and as long it doesn’t go out early this weekend, the Tigers could be as high as a No. 4 seed.”

While Iskoe likes either Vandy or ‘Bama as his darkhorse, my sleeper team is Mississippi St. The Bulldogs have the league’s best interior defender in Jarvis Varnado, who leads the nation in blocked shots (4.6 per game). They also have streaky shooters from 3-point range. When Ravern Johnson, Barry Stewart and Dee Bost are hot from beyond the arc, Rick Stansbury’s team can present a lot of problems for opponents.

**Kentucky vs. Ole Miss**

--The action starts at 1:00 p.m. Eastern with Raycom Sports providing television coverage. Kentucky is the fourth seed from the East, facing fifth-seeded Ole Miss from the West division. The winner will advance to face the West’s No. 1 seed, LSU.

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Kentucky (19-12 straight up, 12-13-1 against the spread) as a six-point favorite with a total of 143 ½. As of late Wednesday night, most books had UK at 6 ½.

--Ole Miss (16-14 SU, 16-10 ATS) has lost three of its last four games both SU and ATS after getting hot midway through the program’s SEC slate. The Rebels, who lost three starters to season-ending injuries on November and December, won five of seven games preceding the recent slump. Even better, they went on a 10-2 ATS tear during a 12-game stretch.

--Andy Kennedy’s team lost its regular-season finale 82-80 to Mississippi St. in Oxford. The Rebels failed to hook up their backers as 1 ½-point home ‘chalk.’ David Huertas, the team’s leading scorer with a 18.2 points per game average, couldn’t play in the second half due to soreness in his heel that kept him out of the prior game, an overtime win at Arkansas.

--Billy Gillispie’s team has lost four in a row, including a mind-boggling home loss to Georgia as a 17 ½-point home favorite. UK lost its regular-season finale 60-53 at Florida as a 5 ½-point underdog. Jodie Meeks made just 6-of-18 shots and had only 15 points, more than nine points below his average. Patrick Patterson had 16 points and 13 rebounds against the Gators

--UK’s season started to unravel when it went to Oxford back on Jan. 27. By the time the ‘Cats left the Tad Pad, they had been saddled with an 85-80 loss as nine-point road favorites.

--The ‘under’ is 14-12 overall for Ole Miss, 7-3 in its last 10 games.

**Mississippi State vs. Georgia**

--LVSC opened Mississippi State (19-12 SU, 14-10-1 ATS) as a 10 ½-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 140. As of early this morning, most spots had MSU installed as a 9 ½-point ‘chalk.’

--Georgia (12-19 SU, 9-14-2 ATS) closed out the regular season with a 68-51 home loss to South Carolina as a 5 ½-point underdog. Woodbury couldn’t follow up his heroic effort in Lexington, making just 4-of-21 shots and scoring only nine points against the Gamecocks.

--Rick Stansbury’s team beat Ole Miss behind a balanced offensive attack that was paced by Barry Stewart’s 17 points. MSU had also won its prior game, knocking off Florida 80-71 as a one-point home underdog.

--Georgia owns an 8-11-2 spread record in underdog spots this season. The Dawgs have been underdogs in 18 consecutive games.

--When these schools met in Athens on Jan. 24, Mississippi St. won a 67-61 decision as a three-point road favorite. Ravern Johnson poured in a game-high 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point land.

--The ‘over’ is 15-9-1 overall for Mississippi St. Meanwhile, Georgia has watched the ‘under’ go 14-11 overall.

--This game will tip 30 minutes after Kentucky-Ole Miss.

**Vanderbilt vs. Alabama**

--This game will go on Raycom at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Most books are listing Vanderbilt (19-11 SU, 12-14-1 ATS) as a 2 ½-point favorite. LVSC sent the total out at 141.

--Alabama (17-13 SU, 12-12-1 ATS) finished strong under interim head coach Philip Pearson. The Crimson Tide won four of its last five games, including Sunday’s thrilling 70-67 win at Tennessee as a 13-point underdog. Anthony Brock banked home a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to stun the crowd at Thompson-Boling Arena.

--Vandy pulled a stunner of its own recently, going into Baton Rouge and ending LSU’s 13-game SEC winning streak as an 9 ½-point underdog. A.J. Ogilvy was dominant in the Commodores’ 75-67 upset victory, tallying 33 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

--Alabama is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven underdog spots.

--These teams met on Feb. 5 in Nashville with Vandy taking a 79-74 decision. The Commodores were victorious, but ‘Bama backers took the money catching seven points.

--Vandy is 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine head-to-head meetings, but both of ‘Bama spread covers have come in the last two encounters.

--The ‘over’ has posted a lucrative 17-8 overall record in Alabama games.

**Florida vs. Arkansas**

--LVSC opened Florida (22-9 SU, 9-14-1 ATS) as a 10-point favorite with a total of 148. As of early this morning, most spots had the Gators at 9 ½.

--Just like last season, UF has limped down the stretch with three losses in their last four games. Not coincidentally, UF’s play has gone south at the same time its star Nick Calathes has gone in a slump. From my view, it seems like Calathes is running out of gas after carrying such a heavy load for this team all season. Will he find a second wind in Tampa? The Gators better hope so.

--Billy Donovan’s team snapped its three-game losing streak with Saturday’s 60-53 home win over Kentucky as a 5 ½-point favorite. But the Gators didn’t earn any style points in a sloppy game against a team that has horrible point-guard play and zero confidence offensively. Calathes had a season-low five points and committed seven turnovers. Fortunately for UF, Walter Hodge, the last player remaining from both national-title teams, celebrated his Senior Day at the O-Dome by going out in style with a team-high 18 points.

--Arkansas (14-15 SU, 11-11 ATS) was one of the nation’s biggest surprises during non-conference play, starting 12-1 with eye-opening wins over Texas and Oklahoma. But things changed for the Razorbacks when they got into SEC play and the loss of Marcus Monk (eligibility issue) certainly hurt their depth. They were an atrocious 2-14 in the SEC, finishing the regular season with an embarrassing 75-58 loss at Vandy.

--Arkansas freshman Jason Henry has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Henry averages 8.0 PPG and scored a season-high 27 points in a loss to South Carolina on Feb. 21.

--When these teams met in Gainesville earlier this year, Florida collected an 80-65 win as a 10 ½-point ‘chalk.’ Calathes was sensational with 28 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

--The ‘over’ is 12-10 overall for the Razorbacks, 12-11 overall for the Gators.

--This will be the late game 30 minutes after the conclusion of ‘Bama-Vandy.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Kentucky had not lost the last four games of the regular season since 1907. That’s 102 years ago by my math.

--According to a poll on Kentucky.com, the website for the Lexington Herald-Leader, the natives in Big Blue Country are extremely restless. File that in the "this-just-in folder," right? To the question of, "Do you want Billy Gillispie to be Kentucky's head coach next year," three possible answers were listed - yes, no or undecided. As of early this morning, more than 12,000 people had voted. Sixty-three percent want Billy Clyde out, while 26 percent want him back. Another 12 percent are undecided.

--Alabama assistant coach James Holland knows what it’s like to be on a staff that has the head coach fired. Holland was on Jim Harrick’s staff at Georgia.

--Syracuse’s Eric Devendorf has to be one of the biggest clowns in college basketball history.

Thursday's Pac-10 Tip Sheet
By Brad Young

**Arizona (5) versus Arizona State (4)**

-Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed Arizona State as a 3 ½-point ‘chalk’ over Arizona, with the total set at 132. This Pac-10 quarterfinal contest is slated to start at 3:00 p.m. ET from Staples Center with FOX Sports Net providing coverage.

-Arizona (19-12 straight up, 17-13 against the spread) snapped out of a four-game SU losing skid by beating Stanford Saturday as a 6 ½-point home favorite, 101-87. The Wildcats have alternated ATS wins and losses their last five games.

NCAAB Today

Early Games

Notes on the best of today's games.

Big East tournament (NYC)
Louisville (-13) beat Providence 94-76 Feb 18, after trailing by point at half; Cardinals won last seven games, covered five of last six tries as the favorite. Friars won last three games, but covered just two of last eight as an underdog. Louisville is 5-2 in its first tourney game the last seven years, with all five wins by seven or more points.

Home side won both Marquette-Villanova games this year; Eagles won first meeting 79-72, then lost 102-84 in rematch. Marquette lost four of last five games, is 3-2 as Big East underdog. Wildcats are 11-2 in last 13 games, covered four of last five as single-digit favorite. Villanova is 11-1 in last 12 first-round games, with last four wins by 8+ points.

Pitt shot 55/48% from floor in beating West Virginia twice, 79-67/70-59 Mountaineers were just 10-33 from arc in the games. Pitt in 19-6 in this event since 2001, winning in '03/'08. WVa won six of last eight games, is 2-4 as Big East dog- they were 11-20 from arc last night, but just 12-44 inside it. Pitt covered eight of its last 12 games as a favorite.

UConn (-12) held Syracuse to 32% from floor in 63-49 win Feb 11, but Huskies failed to cover last four tries as favorite- they had 20 turnovers vs Orange, in one of first games they played without the injured Dyson. Syracuse won last five games, scoring 83.8 ppg, but they're just 1-5 vs spread as Big East dog. UConn is 0-3 in this event the last three years.

Big 11 tournament (Indianapolis)
Home side won both Northwestern-Minnesota games this yr; Gophers won 72-45 at home Feb 22 (-6), after losing 74-65 at Northwestern Jan 18 (+1). Wildcats won three of last four games, covered six of last nine as a dog. Minnesota is 3-6 in last nine games (favorites 7-2 vs spread in those games), they scored just 52 ppg in their last three contests.

Atlantic 14 tournament (Atlantic City)
Temple beat crosstown rival St Joe's twice, 68-59 (-7) at home, 61-59 on road (even); Hawks shot 35/32% in those games. Owls won six of their last eight games, allowing less than 60 pts in their last four wins. St Joe's won three of last four games, but covered just one of last five as the dog; they were down seven at half yesterday, rallied to beat Charlotte by 10. '

Rhode Island (+1) won 73-71 at Duquesne Feb 28; Dukes were 6-28 on arc. URI won six of last seven games, with last three all decided by one or two points. Eams covered just two of last six as a favorite. Duquesne split its last ten games; they're 4-4 as A-14 dog- they were 11-24 from arc, 24-31 from foul line in last night's 91-81 against UMass.

Conference Tournament Thoughts
By Indiancowboy

Big 10 (Canseco Fieldhouse, IN)

Northwestern vs. Minnesota

These games are held in Indiana. Thus, neither of these two teams get a huge advantage in home court. NW and Minnesota split earleir this year and NW got beat up pretty bad in the last game to Minny on the road. I actually think NW will be very game b/c of that ugly loss. MInny is the public fav by at least 2:1 though. A small lean on NW, but how do you go against Tubby - and how do you ride the big public fav? no thanks.

Iowa vs. Michigan

These 2 teams split during the regular season. Michigan won a big game on the road to close the year out at Minny and has shown vast improvement beating Purdue and Minnesota despite minny having revenge. But, the public is on Michigan heavily it seems. Call me crazy, but I just have not one of those feelings, in a tight ballgame that Iowa gets inside the number somehow.

Big 12 (Ford Center - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)

Texas vs. Kansas State

Does this line seem eerily low? Well, keep in mind that Texas is "in". But, Kansas State in the eyes of many are not in and with the loss of A&M this opens the door for them if they can get it done here. Texas lost to K-State at home in OT earlier this year and with 66% of the pubilc backing Texas, I can see KState winning. Texas simply has not impressed me all year and frankly, I think this game is a toss-up. If this game is high scoring, it will favor K-State.

Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma

Wow, these two already meet and the place will be rocking tonight in Oklahoma for this contest. The 4.5 is significant considering that the last time these two teams met lost by just 4 and prior to that lost by 8 to this team at home earlier this year. The public likes Oklahoma to the tune of 68% here in basically a home game but State has been no pushover winning 7 of 8 conference games to play themselves into the tourney. No play for me, but I actually like the 4.5 as I can't imagine State getting blown out here as they will everything they have.

Texas Tech vs. Missouri

Do not count TT out of this game. Missouri has a way of not stepping up in certain games and TT plays with a lot of heart. But, I will tell you that Missouri is a better coached team than A&M and they will stop Singletary this game. I bet you this is all that Missouri worked on - just stopping Singletary in practice. TT is a team that plays hard and they play with a lot of heart. Missouri only beat this team by 11 at home earlier this year, I nearly went with Tech as a dog play today, but chose another dog instead for other reasons.

SEC (Tampa, Florida)

Georgia vs. Mississippi State

Does Georgia have some magic left in the tank? Give Ga some credit for beating Vandy at home, Florida at home and Kentucky on the road. This team lost to Miss. State by 6 at home, comes off an ugly loss to SC at home and Miss State comes off an emotional win over Ole Miss on the road - a lean on Ga to hang tough here.

Vanderbilt vs. Alabama

I love my Tide. This team is really showing some improvement behind Hermann and yes, Vandy is a decent team, but these 3 points is a going to be significant as the Tide lost by 4 to Vandy on the road this year and they have only gotten better since that game as they went into Tennessee and beat a Vols team that needed that game for an Outright hold on the SEC Title. I like the Tide here to get it done.

Arkansas vs. Florida

I personally think Arkansas has packed it in after their 17 point loss to Vandy on the road, 19 point loss to Bama on the road, the fact they are 2-14 in conference play, but Florida is a very shaky young team that has lost 6 of 7 on the road and Arkansas will play as if it has nothing to lose - which they do not - dangerous game for Donovan as his fellas' have really no big game or tournament experience which could be a factor here.

Big East (Madison Square Garden)

Marquette vs. Villanova

Remember, these two teams split the regular season series. Yes, 66% of the public likes Villanova, but Marquette looked very strong against St. Johns - it could be that St. Johns just stinks that bad and didn't show up - but having said that - I like Marquette plus the points here as they have revenge from their latest game and I prefer teams that has one round underneath their belt already.

West Virginia vs. Pittsburgh

Uh oh, 79% favor Pittsburgh here. That's usually not a very good sign for a team laying -4 points as you never want to be such a public fav. It's a curse more than anything. This team lost by 11 on the road and 12 at home to Pitt. Note, that in their last game, WVU was in the baby up until the mid portion of the second half when the wheels fell off. But, this is on neutral footing so Pitt might not have that advantage. Tough call either way, no thanks, there are other games to pick as you have Pitt that is backed by 79% of the public and a WVU team that has a way of showing up in tourney time - but again, how do you go against Pitt?

Syracuse vs. UConn

This is a dangerous spot for Uconn. Syracuse is playing lights out right now and you can see it coming from the fact they won their last 5 of 6 coming into this game. This is on neutral footing so the 14 point road loss they suffered can be used as revenge and I can actually see Syracuse hanging tough for the cover and I have them at a 35% chance of winning this baby Outright.

ACC (Atlanta, Ga)

Georgia Tech vs. Clemson

The fact that this game is in Atlanta, is a huge advantage for Tech. Like I said before with Arkansas, it is always dangerous when a team plays for nothing to lose and such is the case here with Tech. Tech is just 2-14 in conference play but lost to this team by 14 on the road and 8 at home its most recent game. Heck, Tech only lost by 1 point to BC on BC's senior day, I think Tech hangs tough here, as Clemson comes into this game losers of their last 3 of 4 including losing to Va Tech on their home court. Remember, Clemson closed out the year just 9-7 in conference play.
