Tuesday's Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards

As family and friends arrive from out of town for the holidays, many bettors are looking to dodge the “family stuff” and simply relax on the couch with bets and ballgames. That option is available Tuesday night in the form of a televised college basketball doubleheader that can be monitored along with the Boise St.-TCU bowl game. Let’s take a look at both matchups.

**Missouri vs. Illinois (in St. Louis)**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Missouri (9-1 straight up, 4-2 against the spread) as a 1 ½-point favorite.

--Illinois (10-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) has won eight in a row over Missouri, posting a 4-3-1 spread record. The Illini captured a 59-58 win last year as 3 ½-point underdogs.

--Bruce Weber’s team has won four consecutive games, compiling a 2-0 ATS record in the two lined games. On Saturday, Mike Tisdale and Trent Meacham scored 15 points apiece to lead Illinois to an 82-51 victory against Detroit as a 19 ½-point home favorite.

--Since a 75-71 loss to Xavier, its lone defeat of the season to date, Missouri has won seven straight games. The Tigers are 3-1 ATS during that stretch. They are off a 78-44 home win over Stetson in a non-lined affair. DeMarre Carroll led the winners with 14 points and seven rebounds.

--Mike Anderson’s squad has a pair of big-time post players in Carroll and fellow senior Leo Lyons. Carroll is averaging a team-high 17.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while Lyons is averaging 16.2 PPG and 7.2 RPG.

--After last season’s disaster when Illinois finished ninth in the Big Ten with a 5-13 record in league play, this program seems to be back on track. The Illini own wins over Vanderbilt, Kansas St. and Georgia, and their lone loss was a 76-74 defeat to still unbeaten Clemson.

--Alex Legion, a transfer from Kentucky, made his debut for the Illini against Detroit. He had six points and two assists in limited minutes.

--The ‘over’ is 4-2 overall for Missouri, 3-3 for Illinois.

--ESPN2 will provide television coverage at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

**Texas at Wisconsin**

--LVSC opened Texas (9-2 SU, 4-4 ATS) as a two-point road favorite. The Longhorns will be looking to avenge a painful 67-66 loss to the Badgers last season. Michael Flowers drained a long 3-pointer with two second left to lift his team to victory as a 7 ½-point underdog.

--Texas is looking to avenge that aforementioned defeat and also bounce back from Saturday’s heartbreaking loss to Michigan St. The Spartans won a 67-63 decision in Austin as 5 ½-point road underdogs thanks to Durrell Summers’ clutch go-ahead trey from the right wing in the final minute.

--Wisconsin (9-2 SU, 5-4 ATS) is unbeaten in six home games this year, posting a 2-2 ATS mark. Bo Ryan’s squad is off a 57-46 triumph over Coppin St. in a non-lined matchup. Jon Leuer paced the Badgers with 16 points and six rebounds.

--Texas had won six in a row since its first loss of the year – an 81-80 setback against Notre Dame at the Maui Classic – before going down against Tom Izzo’s bunch on Saturday. In defeat, Gary Johnson had a team-high 20 points and Damion James had 15 points and 10 rebounds. However, sharp-shooting A.J. Abrams was held to a season-low eight points on 3-of-10 shooting from the floor.

--Abrams is one of the country’s premier perimeter shooters, as evidenced by his 37 trifectas (tied for 13th in the nation). He averages 19.7 PPG and and has connected on 45.1 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc.

--Senior forward Marcus Landry leads the Badgers in scoring with a 12.5 PPG average.

--The ‘under’ is 5-3 overall for Texas, 4-4-1 for Wisconsin.

--Tip-off is slated for 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

The Notorious B.I.G. Ten
By JASON LOGAN

Heading into the college basketball schedule, bettors believed more in Santa Claus than the Big Ten.

The conference wasn't up to snuff for the second straight year and outside of the Purdue Boilermakers, Michigan State Spartans and, if you want to be really nice, Wisconsin Badgers, the league boasted no legit contender for the national championship.

Just like faith in St. Nick grows as Christmas draws nearer, so should faith in the Big Ten. The conference has gift wrapped huge paydays during non-conference play and now has three programs ranked in the Top 25 with five others getting national recognition.

It is among the top leagues in field goal percentage, 3-point percentage and is the finest defensive conference in all the land, allowing just under 60 points per game. Big Ten teams also combine for the fewest amount of turnovers per game (12.48) out of all 33 Division-1 conferences.

So if you're still searching for that perfect gift to get the sports bettor in your family, put down that NFL football phone and order a subscription to the Big Ten Network. The way the league is rolling, it could pay for itself in one weekend.

The Big Ten added to that growing reputation with many impressive performances from its members this weekend.

A lot of people were giving the Boilermakers a lump of coal after they dropped games to Oklahoma and Duke and failed to cover in three straight contests. They even went as far as calling Matt Painter's squad overrated. But Purdue made believers out of those hacks after smashing golden boy Stephen Curry and the Davidson Wildcats by 18 points Saturday, covering as a 5-point favorite.

The Boilermakers got the win the only way they know how – lockdown defense. They threw at least two guys at Curry each time the ball swung and got Grinch-like defense from reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Chris Kramer. Having that shutdown defender is a useful tool when playing teams with lone gunmen like Davidson.

Michigan State got a visit from the big fella Saturday, but not the one sporting the bright suit and beard (we're also not talking about Oregon State's Daniel Deane). Center Goran Suton, who recently returned from minor knee surgery, dropped 18 points in the Spartans' thrilling 67-63 win over Texas as 5.5-point road underdogs in Houston.

However, much like Santa, Suton has a tendency to show up just once in a blue moon. Coach Tom Izzo is asking for some toughness for Christmas. He should also put foul shooting on that list. Michigan State still managed to win despite shooting 8-for-17 from the line Saturday and is hitting freebies at a measly 64 percent clip on the season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the biggest shockers of non-conference play. They've taken games from Miami, Notre Dame and Butler to remain undefeated. Ohio State won its eighth straight against Iona Saturday, covering as a 16-point favorite, despite junior forward Dave Lighty pulling a Tiny Tim. The Buckeyes floor general is out for as many as 12 weeks with a broken foot suffered in the win over Jacksonville last Wednesday.

Thankfully, OSU has Evan Turner to lean on. The sensational sophomore is playing sweeter than grandma's fruit cake. He's putting up almost 17 points per night and is making up for Lighty's lost toughness under the boards. Head coach Thad Matta is toying with the idea of going big in the first five. The country could get a better look at highly-toted freshman B.J. Mullens, who has played sparingly, but made the most of his 16 minutes against the Gaels.

Saturday's biggest strike for the Big Ten was the Minnesota Golden Gophers' win over Louisville in Glendale, Arizona. The Golden Gophs covered as 9-point neutral site dogs and stayed perfect on the year with a 10-0 tally. They're beginning to settle into Tubby Smith's sets in year No. 2 under the head coach.

Minnesota's upset should come with a “Do Not Open Till Conference Play” tag. It shot the ball very well against the Cards and erased a poor game from leading scorer Lawrence Westbrook, who tossed in just two points and turned the ball over four times. But it also took advantage of a jet legged team that has yet to play up to preseason expectations.

The supporting cast of the conference have also made bettors think twice about the Big Ten. The Michigan Wolverines have wins over Duke and UCLA and have a shiny new sixth man in shooter Laval Lucas-Perry. The Arizona transfer knocked down four three pointers against Oakland Saturday.

The Illinois Fighting Illini are out of the blocks strong with a 5-2 ATS mark and also showed off their star transfer Saturday. Former Kentucky Wildcat Alex Legion is eligible and scored six points in 18 minutes in the win over Detroit. The Illini have a deep backcourt shaping up with Legion joining Chester Frazier, Trent Meacham and Demetri McCamey.

The Northwestern Wildcats have showed some chops, posting a 4-1-1 record against the spread. They just missed a cover visiting Stanford as 4.5-point dogs and have solid wins over Florida State and DePaul.

Even the sad-sack Indiana Hoosiers have some value this season. While their anemic offense and transparent defense has led to a 3-3 ATS record, those two sour traits have combined for five straight under paydays making IU a sweet treat for total bettors.

Tips and Trends

Illinois vs. Missouri at St. Louis

Illinois: The Illini have won the last eight meetings in this rivalry series, with the last loss coming back in 1999. They have also won four straight overall, all by double digits following their only loss of the season to Clemson, 76-74. Trent Meacham and Mike Tisdale each scored 15 points in an 82-51 rout of Detroit on Saturday. Illinois is 5-1 ATS in its last six line games this year and has gone 4-2-1 ATS in the last seven meetings with Missouri.

Illinois is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 games vs. Big 12.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Illinois' last 11 games vs. Big 12.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 69

Missouri (-2.5, O/U 140): The Tigers are back in the Top 25 for the first time in nearly five years thanks to great defense. They are coming off their seventh straight victory, beating Stetson 78-44 on Saturday. The Hatters shot just 27.1 percent from the field and made only 1-of-17 attempts from 3-point range. “I thought our defense was the constant for us tonight,” Mizzou guard Matt Lawrence said. “If we can put forth that effort night-in and night-out, the offense will eventually come, because we’ll be able to get some transition buckets.”

Missouri is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 Tuesday games.
The OVER is 10-3 in Missouri's last 13 neutral site games.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 71

#8 Texas at Wisconsin

Texas (-1.5, O/U 123): The Longhorns are looking to avoid consecutive losses for the first time in almost exactly a year against the same team that dealt them their last two-game skid. Texas dropped back-to-back games to Michigan State and Wisconsin at this same time last year and lost to the Spartans again on Saturday, 67-63. Leading scorer A.J. Abrams was held to a season-low eight points on 3-of-10 shooting and failed to sink a 3-pointer for the first time in 17 games. “Every time I did catch the ball, if I did catch the ball, I was kind of out of position,” Abrams said. “They just did a good job on me. Looking back on it, if I could do something different, I might kind of slow down a little bit.”

Texas is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 Tuesday games.
Texas is 1-3 ATS in its last 4 lined games overall.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 62

Wisconsin: The Badgers have enjoyed a lot of success against Texas in the past, going 4-1 all-time in the series. They are coming off a 57-46 win over Coppin State on Saturday despite shooting only two free throws and missing 16 of their 21 shots from 3-point range. “I liked the way we stuck our noses down and ground it out,” said Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan. The key difference in this year's meeting is that the Badgers no longer have defensive stopper Michael Flowers, who held Abrams in check last season.

Wisconsin is 3-0 SU & ATS in the last 3 meetings.
The UNDER is 16-6-1 in Wisconsin's last 23 home games.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 61
