Tuesday Tip Sheet
By Judd Hall
Now that the Super Bowl is in our rear view mirror we can get back to betting on some college hoops. Tuesday has a pair of contests that have conference powers taking on clubs that are struggling to get back on track.
Purdue Boilermakers at Ohio State Buckeyes – 7:00 p.m. EST
--Purdue (17-4 straight up, 9-8 against the spread) is as banged up a team that you will find in the country right now, logging seven players that are not at 100 percent. Yet they still have found a way to win six straight games. The Boilermakers kept that streak going by covering as 11-point home favorites against a depleted Michigan side on Jan. 31, 67-49.
--E’Twaun Moore helped them beat the Wolverines by scoring 17 points with three boards and four assists. The oft-injured Robbie Hummel put 13 points and six rebounds as well.
--The Buckeyes appear to be picking up some steam after stumbling for much of the New Year. Ohio State (15-5 SU, 9-7 ATS) has won two straight matches to pull itself within striking distance in the Big Ten race in the No. 4 position. Thad Matta’s crew took advantage of the Hoosiers’ mistakes from the field (47.4 field goal percentage) to win as seven-point road faves, 93-81.
--Evan Turner was a crack shot against Indiana, connecting on 10 of his 14 shots from the field to end up with 29 points and 10 rebounds. The Bucks were on fire at the free throw line, hitting 83.3 percent of their shots in Bloomington on Jan. 31.
--Purdue has been fantastic when playing on the road in the Big Ten recently, going 9-5 SU and 9-4-1 ATS in the last two seasons. Bettors have been able to cash in on the ‘over’ during that stretch as it is 11-3.
--As good as those numbers are for the Boilers, they’ve gong 3-11-1 ATS in their last 15 games in Columbus.
--Ohio State has enjoyed playing at Value City Arena the last two years, going 10-3 SU against Big Ten foes. But the gambling public is avoiding them like the plague since the Buckeyes are just 5-7-1 ATS.
--Las Vegas Sports Consultants have installed the Boilermakers as 2 ½-point road favorites with the total posted at 126.
Maryland Terrapins at North Carolina Tar Heels – 8:00 p.m. EST
--LVSC has made North Carolina a 21-point home "chalk."
--It’s no secret that Maryland (14-7 SU, 7-6-2 ATS) was looking for anything to help spark itself after dropping four of five games. The Terps think they might have gotten that jumpstart they needed after taking down Miami as one-point home faves on Jan. 31, 73-68. Greivis Vasquez got pretty darn close to a triple-double in the contest by scoring 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. The Terrapins also benefitted by hitting 14 of their 17 free throw attempts.
--It was the first time Gary Williams’ squad covered the number since losing as 3 ½-point road ‘dogs to Florida State, 76-73, on Jan. 17.
--North Carolina (19-2 SU, 9-10 ATS) is currently ranked fifth nationally and are riding a five-game win streak. The Heels latest conquest came against the rival North Carolina State as 14-point road favorites on Jan. 31, 93-76.
--All five of the Tar Heels’ starters scored in the double-digits, but Tyler Hansbrough was top man with 31 points and six rebounds. But I guess that is easy to win when you’re hitting 56.5 percent from the field and your opponents made 41.8 percent of their shots.
--Maryland has won and covered its last two meetings with the Heels, cashing the ‘over’ in both as well.
--The ‘over’ has been a solid wager for bettors in this showdown, hitting in 12 of the last 16 games.
--The Terrapins have lost all three road games they’ve had in the ACC, but they’ve gone 2-1 ATS. In the last two years, they’ve posted a 4-7 SU and 7-3-1 ATS mark.
--Playing in the Dean Dome has its advantages, as North Carolina can attest. After all, the Heels are 8-3 SU at home over the last two seasons. Bettors have had marginal success in backing them at home, going 6-5 ATS.

Can't-miss college hoops games
By MATT SEVERANCE
With football season over it's really time to concentrate on college basketball. Here is the best game each night this week with a look at next weekend coming Friday.
South Carolina at Florida (Tuesday, 9 p.m., ESPN)
Don't look now, but the Gamecocks are tied atop the SEC East with the Gators and Kentucky. South Carolina is the only one of those three on a winning streak, having beaten UK on Saturday, 78-77. Florida, meanwhile, was thumped by Tennessee.
The Gamecocks beat Florida 70-69 on Jan. 21 on a Zam Fredrick layup at the buzzer after UF missed a free throw. That was South Carolina's first win over Florida since the 2006 regular season. Saturday’s win against Kentucky was South Carolina’s 16th of the season, surpassing by two its win total each of the previous two seasons.

(12) Purdue (17-4, 9-8 ATS) at Ohio State (15-5, 9-7 ATS)
Purdue goes after its seventh straight victory overall and its fourth straight Big Ten road win when it travels to Columbus to battle Ohio State at Value City Arena.
Since suffering consecutive losses to Penn State and Illinois to start the Big Ten season, the Boilermakers have ripped off six consecutive victories (5-1 ATS). On Saturday, Purdue’s defense stifled Michigan in a 67-49 victory, covering as a 12½-point home chalk for its fourth straight ATS triumph. During the winning streak, the Boilers are allowing just 58.3 points per game, giving up 63 or fewer in all six contests.
The Buckeyes have followed up a two-game SU and ATS slide with back-to-back wins and covers over Michigan (72-54 as a four-point home favorite) and Indiana (93-81 as a seven-point road chalk). In Saturday’s victory over the Hoosiers, Ohio State set season marks for most points scored and most points allowed.
Purdue is 6-2 (5-3 ATS) in league action, including 3-1 on the road (2-2 ATS), while Ohio State is 5-4 SU and ATS in the Big Ten, including 3-1 at home (2-2 ATS).
The Boilermakers snapped an eight-game losing skid to Ohio State with last year’s 75-68 victory as a one-point home underdog in the first regular-season meeting. However, the Buckeyes got revenge with an 80-77 overtime win in Columbus, pushing as a three-point home chalk. Ohio State is on an 11-3-1 ATS run in this rivalry, including 5-2-1 ATS at home.
In addition to its 4-0 ATS run overall, Purdue is on positive pointspread streaks of 27-9-1 against the Big Ten, 13-5-1 on the road, 9-4 on Tuesday and 21-9-1 after a spread-cover. ATS ADVANTAGE: OVER
Maryland (14-7, 7-6-2 ATS) at (3) North Carolina (19-2, 9-10 ATS)
North Carolina looks to continue its ascent up the national rankings when it puts a five-game winning streak on the line in an ACC showdown against Maryland at the Dean Dome.
The Tar Heels are coming off Saturday’s 93-76 rout of North Carolina State, barely cashing as a 15-point road favorite, an effort that pushed Roy Williams’ squad to No. 3 in the rankings. During their five-game winning streak, the Heels are averaging 86.4 (47 percent shooting) and allowing 69.8 ppg (38.3 ppg). However, North Carolina has alternated ATS wins and losses in its last 10 games and hasn’t cashed in back-to-back contests since early December, a stretch of 13 outings.
Maryland halted a two-game SU and a three-game ATS slide with Saturday’s 73-68 home win over Miami, Fla., covering as a 1½-point favorite. The Terps are still just 3-5 in their last eight games (3-4 ATS), including 0-3 (2-1 ATS) on the road in ACC play. Also, in its last five games, Gary Williams’ team is averaging just 68.2 ppg (40.1 percent shooting) and giving up 76.6 ppg (43.8 percent shooting), including a disastrous 85-44 loss at Duke in the team’s most recent roadie.
The Terps have stunned North Carolina the last two years, winning 89-87 as a 3½-point home favorite in 2007 and 82-80 as an 18-point road ‘dog last year. Previously, the Tar Heels had won five straight clashes against Maryland (4-1 ATS). The host has cashed in six of the last eight series meetings, the underdog has covered in four of the last five, and the SU winner is 9-1 ATS in the last 10.
Maryland is 3-7 ATS both in its last 10 ACC contests and its last 10 on Tuesday. However, despite the debacle at Duke 10 days ago, the Terps are 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 on the highway. The Tar Heels are 30-14 ATS in their last 44 contests versus teams with a winning record and 39-19-1 ATS in their last 59 after a non-cover, but otherwise they’re on pointspread dips of 5-8 overall, 3-7 in ACC action, 2-5 at home and 3-8 after a SU victory.
The over is 12-4 in the last 16 head-to-head meetings in this rivalry and 5-2 in the last seven clashes on Tobacco Road. Additionally, UNC is on “over” stretches of 5-2 overall, 6-2 at home, 4-1 after a SU win, 12-4 versus winning teams and 11-3-1 at home against teams with a losing road record. On the other hand, Maryland sports “under” streaks of 15-7-1 overall, 5-1 on the road, 4-1-1 on Tuesday and 7-1 after a SU victory.
