Virginia Tech (12-5, 5-7 ATS) at (1) Wake Forest (16-0, 8-4 ATS)

Wake Forest returns to the court for the first time since assuming the top spot in the national rankings as it welcomes Virginia Tech to Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Demon Deacons, who are the last remaining unbeaten team in Division I, come home after back-to-back double-digit road wins at Boston College (83-63) and Clemson (78-68). They easily cashed as a three-point favorite against the Eagles and a 2½-point underdog against the Tigers to improve to 5-0 ATS in their last five lined games. In Saturday’s win at previously unbeaten Clemson, Wake Forest shot 48.2 percent from the field and held the Tigers to 33.8 percent, but it was held under 83 points for the first time in seven contests.

The Hokies have won three in a row and seven of their last eight, and they’re coming off Saturday’s 79-71 home victory over Boston College as a 3½-point chalk. Virginia Tech’s last setback came on Jan. 4 in its only previous ACC road game, a 69-44 loss at Duke as a 17-point underdog. Seth Greenberg’s squad has followed up a 1-7 ATS slump with back-to-back spread-covers.

Virginia Tech crushed the Demon Deacons 80-58 as a five-point home favorite in last year’s lone meeting between the schools. The Hokies are 4-1 SU and ATS in the last five battles, but the home team has taken the last four clashes (3-1 ATS).

Wake Forest has scored at least 82 points in 12 of 16 games and ranks in the Top 10 nationally in scoring offense (85.1 ppg, 5th), field-goal offense (51.1 percent, 3rd), field-goal defense (36.2 percent, 2nd) and three-point defense (28.3 percent, 7th), and the Deacons allow just 65.8 ppg. Wake Forest is 9-0 at home (4-1 ATS in lined games), winning by an average of 23 ppg (85-62).

Boston College averages just 70.1 ppg on 43.8 percent shooting, while giving up 64.6 ppg on 39.8 percent shooting. The Hokies are 5-4 (3-4 ATS) in road/neutral site contests.

Va-Tech is on ATS runs of 8-2 in ACC play, 11-5 after a SU victory and 10-2 after a spread-cover. Meanwhile, in addition to its current 5-0 ATS run, Wake Forest is on positive pointspread stretches of 14-6-2 at home, 4-1 in ACC action, 5-1 on Wednesday and 5-0 against teams with a winning record.

The over is 7-2 in the Hokies’ last nine overall, but the under is 8-3 in Wake’s last 11 Wednesday affairs.

ATS ADVANTAGE: WAKE FOREST

(20) Villanova (14-3, 6-7 ATS) at (3) UConn (16-1, 5-6 ATS)

The latest matchup of ranked Big East foes comes from the XL Center in Hartford, as UConn guns for its fifth straight win when it hosts Villanova.

The Huskies cruised past Seton Hall 76-61 on Sunday, but came up just short as an 18½-point home favorite, their second consecutive non-cover. During its five-game winning streak – all against Big East foes – UConn is averaging 73 ppg, shooting 49.6 percent from the floor and 42.1 percent from three-point range while giving up 58.4 ppg, 37.8 percent shooting overall and 27.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc. UConn is 2-1 in Big East home games (1-2 ATS).

Villanova has alternated SU wins and losses in its last five games, including its first four league contests. On Saturday, the Wildcats pummeled St. John’s 76-57, covering as a 14½-point home favorite to end an 0-3 ATS slide. Jay Wright’s club is 1-1 SU and 0-2 ATS in Big East road games, beating Seton Hall 89-85 in overtime as a 6½-point chalk and losing 79-72 at Marquette as a three-point underdog.

The Wildcats edged UConn 67-65 as a one-point home favorite last season, improving to 3-1 SU and ATS in the last four head-to-head meetings. The home team is 6-2 SU and 7-1 ATS in the last eight clashes, with the Huskies cashing in four of the last five as a host; the chalk is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings; and the SU winner as covered in nine of the last 10.

The Huskies have scored at least 76 points in 13 of 17 games, while holding four of their last five league foes to 61 points or less. Meanwhile, Villanova has put up at least 70 points in five of its last seven games and held five of its last eight opponents to 61 points or fewer.

Villanova is in ATS droughts of 1-4 in Big East play and 3-7 versus winning teams, while the Huskies are 2-7 ATS in their last nine home games and 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 contests against teams with a winning road record.

The over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings between these schools and 4-0 in the last four clashes at Connecticut, and the over is 4-1 in Villanova’s last five against Big East foes. However, the under is on runs of 20-7-1 for Villanova overall, 9-3-1 when Villanova takes to the road, 5-0 for Villanova on Wednesday, 5-1 for UConn overall, 4-1 for UConn at home and 4-1 for UConn in Big East games.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UCONN

(10) Clemson (16-1, 6-6 ATS) at (5) North Carolina (16-2, 7-9 ATS)

Four days after tasting defeat for the first time this season, Clemson now faces the difficult task of traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., for an ACC clash with the rejuvenated fifth-ranked Tar Heels.

The Tigers fell 78-68 to Wake Forest as a 2½-point home favorite on Saturday, just the second time this season they have given up more than 75 points in a game. During its 16-0 start to the season, Clemson posted 11 double-digit victories, and it is 6-0 SU and 3-3 ATS in road/neutral-site games. The Tigers are just 1-3 ATS in their last four contests.

North Carolina is coming off Saturday’s 82-65 rout of Miami, Fla., its second consecutive double-digit ACC victory after starting out league play 0-2. However, the Tar Heels barely fell short as a 17½-point home favorite, dropping to 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games, including 1-5 ATS inside the Dean Dome.

North Carolina is riding a nine-game winning streak in this rivalry against Clemson, but just 5-4 ATS. Last year, the Tar Heels needed overtime to beat the Tigers twice in the regular season, winning 90-85 as a 5½-point road favorite and 103-93 as an 8½-point home chalk. Then in the ACC tournament championship game, UNC edged Clemson 86-81, again barely covering as a 5½-point choice.

North Carolina ranks second in the nation in scoring at 93 ppg and 14th in field-goal shooting (49 percent). Roy Williams’ team has scored more than 80 points in 16 of its 18 games, including tallying 90 or more eight times. Defensively, the Heels yield 70.1 ppg on just 39.5 percent shooting. Meanwhile, Clemson is putting up 79.7 ppg on 47.8 percent shooting while giving up 63.4 ppg on 40.2 percent shooting, but it has failed to score 70 points in three straight contests.

Despite Saturday’s loss to Wake Forest, the Tigers are on ATS streaks of 5-1 on the road, 6-0 on the road against teams with a winning home record, 4-1-1 in ACC play, 4-1 on Wednesday and 8-2 after a double-digit home loss. North Carolina, in addition to its 3-7 ATS slump overall and 1-5 ATS rut at home, has failed to cover in six of its last seven ACC games and seven of its last eight after an outright victory. On the positive end, the Tar Heels are 5-0 ATS in their last five Wednesday contests and 28-13 ATS in their last 41 versus winning teams.

The under is on streaks of 4-0 for Clemson overall, 11-5-1 for Clemson in ACC play, 4-1 for Clemson following a non-cover and 5-2-1 for North Carolina in ACC action. Conversely, the over is on runs of 4-1 for the Tigers on the road, 4-1 for the Tigers on Wednesday, 5-2 for the Tar Heels at home and 6-2 for the Tar Heels on Wednesday. Finally, all three meetings between these schools last year went over the total.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

Nebraska (12-4, 4-4- ATS) at (6) Oklahoma (17-1, 8-5 ATS)

Oklahoma tries for its sixth straight win overall and its fourth consecutive victory to start the Big 12 season when it entertains Nebraska at the Noble Center.

The Sooners faced a stiff challenge at Texas A&M on Saturday but held on for a 69-63 victory, covering as a 3½-point favorite as they improved to 3-0 SU and ATS in conference play. Since suffering their only defeat of the season – 96-88 at Arkansas as a 5½-point road chalk – Oklahoma has won five in a row by an average of 21 ppg (80-61) while shooting 48.6 percent and holding the opposition to 34.6 percent.

Nebraska is 5-1 in its last six games, including Saturday’s 73-51 rout of Kansas State as a one-point home favorite. The Cornhuskers are 2-1 SU and ATS in Big 12 action, but the loss was a 65-53 setback at Iowa State as a one-point underdog in their first conference road game. Nebraska hasn’t allowed more than 65 points in any game this season, holding 11 of 16 foes under 60 points, and they rank second in the nation in scoring defense, yielding only 55.8 ppg.

These rivals met just once last year, with Nebraska rolling to a 63-45 victory as a 2½-point home chalk. The Huskers are 3-1 SU and ATS in the last four meetings after going 0-6 SU and ATS in the previous six. The host has won and covered the last four regular-season clashes. Finally, the SU winner has cashed in each of the last 10 head-to-head battles.

Oklahoma is 10-0 at home (3-2 ATS in lined games), outscoring visitors by more than 20 points per game (83.1-62.6) while shooting 48.4 percent and holding opponents to just 35.7 percent at the Noble Center. Meanwhile, Nebraska is 1-3 SU and ATS on the highway, managing just 55.5 ppg (37 percent) and giving up 60.8 ppg (39.1 percent).

Nebraska is 8-23 ATS in its last 31 roadies, but otherwise is on pointspread upticks of 6-1 in Big 12 play, 4-1 on Wednesday and 5-2 after an ATS win. Oklahoma is on ATS runs of 6-2 in Big 12 action, 5-2 versus winning teams and 8-1 on Wednesday.

The under is 5-2-1 in the last eight Nebraska-Oklahoma matchups, 9-1 in the Sooners’ last 10 conference games and 9-2 in the Sooners’ last 11 Wednesday contests. Also, for the Huskers, the under is on stretches of 7-1 overall, 6-0 in Big 12 play, 4-0 on Wednesday and 5-0 after a SU win.

ATS ADVANTAGE: OKLAHOMA and UNDER

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
By Judd Hall

North Carolina started out the season as the No. 1 team in the land, but a pair of early losses in the ACC knocked them down a few pegs. Now the Tar Heels are poised to regain their lofty with a solid win on Wednesday against Clemson.

Before the Heels hit the hardwood, the betting public will get a quality Big East showdown between Villanova and Connecticut. Not a bad night of action on ESPN, if you ask me.

Villanova Wildcats at Connecticut Huskies– 7:00 p.m. EST

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants have listed the Huskies as 11-point home favorites with the total coming in at 138.

--Villanova (14-3 straight up, 6-7 against the spread) was desperate to get the bad taste of its mouth after a tough 61-60 home loss at the hands of the Cardinals on Jan. 10. The Wildcats were able to rebound from that rough defeat by cruising over St. John’s as heavy 14-point home favorites last Sunday, 76-57. Dante Cunningham paced ‘Nova in the victory with 17 points in 31 minutes of play. It was the 18th time in Cunningham’s last 19 games that he scored in double-digits.

--The Huskies are on a roll right now after winning their fifth straight match by downing Seton Hall 76-61 on Jan. 18 as 19-point home favorites. A.J. Price picked up 23 points for UCONN with Hasheem Thabeet helping out with 15 points and 17 boards in a triumphant effort. While Connecticut (16-1 SU, 6-7 ATS) has improved in the standings, they’ve hurt bettors by failing to cover the spread in its last two tilts.

--The Wildcats have won three of their last four meetings against Connecticut, posting a 3-1 spread record. ‘Nova used 18-point efforts from Corey Stokes and Scottie Reynolds to upend the Huskies as a one-point home “chalk,” 67-65, last February.

--Connecticut is 8-1 SU, but just 1-4 ATS in matches they’ve played at home this season. Jim Calhoun’s Huskies have seen the ‘under’ in all five home games that were on the board.

--Villanova has gone 5-2 SU when in road/neutral site games. However, the ‘Cats have mustered a 3-4 ATS mark. They’ve seen the ‘under’ go 5-2 away from home.

Clemson Tigers at North Carolina Tar Heels – 9:00 p.m. EST

--The good folks over at LVSC have installed the Tar Heels as 15-point home favorites with the total sticking at 163.

--Clemson (16-1 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) finally fell to the ranks of the beaten after falling to the Demon Deacons as a 2 ½-point home favorite, 78-68, on Jan. 17. K.C. Rivers and Terrence Oglesby led Tiger scores with 15 points apiece. Yet it’s hard to put yourself in a position to win when you shoot 55 percent from the charity stripe, while Wake Forest is nailing 78.6 percent of its freebies.

--While that was the first outright loss for the Tigers, they’ve beat up on bettors by failing to cover the spread in three of their last four games.

--North Carolina (16-2 SU, 8-9 ATS) didn’t have such a great start to its ACC campaign by losing to the Eagles and Demon Deacons. But they’ve had no problem in bouncing back after winning two straight since that bump in the road.

--The Tar Heels are coming off of an 82-65 victory over Miami as 18-point home favorites on Jan. 17. Tyler Hansbrough had another solid outing by dropping 24 points and seven rebounds on the Hurricanes. As great as those numbers were, the one that sealed the deal for Roy Williams’ Heels is that they shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line. Miami only connected on 45.5 percent of the shots form the charity stripe.

--North Carolina has been almost automatic at the Dean Dome this season with an 8-1 SU record. Yet bettors haven’t had too much luck with them as the Heels are 2-6 ATS.

--Clemson has won all six games they played away from home this season outright. Yet the Tigers are no better than a coin flip to cover the spread as evidenced by a 3-3 ATS mark.

--This has been a decidedly one-sided matchup over the past few seasons as Carolina has won nine straight contests with the Tigers. Clemson backers should be happy to know that they’ve covered the spread in two of the last three meetings with the Tar Heels. The ‘over’ has hit in the last three games.

SEC Tip Sheet
By B Edwards

Georgia’s Dennis Felton, Alabama’s Mark Gottfried and Auburn’s Jeff Lebo are all on the hot seat in the SEC. The conference has a televised doubleheader tonight on Raycom Sports, in addition to two other games impacting a pair of the aforementioned coaches.

The Gators are looking to collect their 11th consecutive win, while Mississippi St. is also looking to stay hot. What else? Well, Tennessee destroyed Vandy last night in Music City.

And, lest we forget, there’s a coach’s wife who hasn’t been a happy camper lately. (How did he not veto her filing that lawsuit, or did she do it without telling him because she was so pissed?). Anyway, let’s get to tonight’s contests…

**Florida at South Carolina**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Florida (16-2 straight up, 4-7 against the spread) as a 1 ½-point favorite. As of early this morning, most sports books had the game at pick ‘em with a total of 150.

--Billy Donovan’s team has won 10 in a row to climb back into the AP Top 25 this week at No. 24. The Gators are astonishingly the lone SEC team in the AP rankings. They are also 24th LVSC’s Top 30 poll this week, moving up two spots thanks to wins at Auburn and vs. Arkansas.

--Nick Calathes had a monster game in Saturday’s 80-65 win over Arkansas as a 10 ½-point home ‘chalk.’ The sophomore guard from out of the Orlando area scored a game-high 28 points to go with 10 rebounds and seven assists.

--South Carolina (12-4 SU, 5-6 ATS) won its SEC home opener on Jan. 10, thumping Auburn 68-56 as a six-point favorite. Zam Fredrick II erupted for a game-high 27 points in the win over Jeff Lebo’s squad. Since then, however, USC has dropped back-to-back road games to LSU and Tennessee. The Gamecocks did cover the spread in Saturday’s 82-79 loss in Knoxville as nine-point underdogs.

--USC is second in the SEC in scoring, averaging 80.1 points per game. UF is fourth in the conference with a 78.9 PPG average.

--This game features two of the SEC’s premier point guards in USC’s Devan Downey and UF’s Calathes. Downey is the SEC’s second-leading scorer (19.6 PPG), while Calathes is sixth in scoring (17.7 PPG). Calathes leads the conference in assists (7.7 APG), while Downey has the fourth-most dimes (4.3 APG). Downey leads the SEC in steals with 3.0 per game, and he’s also 10th in free-throw percentage and fifth in minutes played. Calathes is second in the SEC in steals with 2.2 per game.

--South Carolina is 10-1 SU at home, but the ‘Cocks have a mediocre 2-4 spread record at Comcast Center in Columbia. Dating back to last season, they are 2-7 ATS in their last nine home games.

--The Gators have won five in a row over South Carolina, but the Gamecocks have taken the cash in five of the last seven head-to-head meetings.

--UF has seen the ‘under’ go 6-4 overall this year and it has cashed in each of its last four outings. On the flip side, South Carolina has watched the ‘over’ go 6-4 overall, 3-3 in its home assignments.

--The ‘under’ is on a 6-2 run in the last eight head-to-head meetings between these SEC East rivals.

--Raycom Sports will provide television coverage at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Mississippi State at LSU**

--LVSC opened LSU (14-3 SU, 5-4 ATS) as a five-point favorite. As of early this morning, most spots had the Tigers at 5 ½ with a total of 139. This is a monster game for both teams because there’s a chance that just one SEC West squad will get an NCAA Tournament bid. (Granted, it’s a little early to say that, but I’d say that scenario is better than 50-50 at this point.)

--Mississippi State (13-5 SU, 7-4 ATS) has won five consecutive games both SU and ATS, including Saturday’s 73-66 win over Vandy as a four-point home favorite. Ravern Johnson scored 18 points to pace the winners, while freshman point guard Dee Bost continued his stellar play with 16 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals compared to just one turnover.

--LSU lost its SEC opener 65-59 at Alabama. However, Trent Johnson’s team bounced back with a home win over Auburn before spanking Ole Miss by an 83-51 count Saturday as a 1 ½-point road favorite. Tasmin Mitchell had a team-high 17 points in the blowout win over the Rebels.

--MSU junior center Jarvis Varnardo leads the nation in blocked shots with 5.2 per game.

--Rick Stansbury’s team has won four of the last five against LSU both SU and ATS. The ‘under’ is 4-2 in the last six head-to-head meetings between these SEC West adversaries.

--The ‘over’ has cashed tickets in six of the Bulldogs’ last seven games. Meanwhile, LSU has seen the ‘under’ go 5-4 overall, although the ‘over’ is 3-2 in its home games.

**Ole Miss at Alabama**

--LVSC opened Alabama (11-6 SU, 6-6 ATS) as a seven-point ‘chalk’ and most books had that same number this morning.

--After Alabama disposed of LSU just 10 days ago in its SEC opener, it appeared to perhaps be the team to beat in the SEC West. Less than two weeks later, the team has lost its senior leader for the season and Mark Gottfried’s future at his alma mater looks tenuous at best. And the Crimson Tide have lost back-to-back games to extend their SEC road losing streak to 14 games.

--Ronald Steele, one of just two players in school history to score 1,000 points and dish out 400 career assists, has decided to shut it down for the season after consulting with Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday. Steele is suffering from plantar fasciitis that in his foot that doesn’t involve his gimpy knees that caused him to redshirt last season. Best of luck to Steele in his recovery, as he was one of the SEC’s best point guards over the last decade before injuries derailed his collegiate career.

--Ole Miss (10-7, 7-6 ATS) can certainly relate to dealing with injuries. In fact, the Rebels have been decimated by injuries more than any other program in the country. They are without three starters who went down with season-enders, including stud sophomore point guard Chris Warren who was off to a sizzling start before tearing his ACL in a narrow loss to Louisville.

--The ‘under’ is on an incredible 8-1 run in the last nine head-to-head meetings between these SEC West counterparts. Alabama has taken the cash in eight of the last 10 encounters.

--The ‘over’ is 8-4 overall for ‘Bama, 5-2 in its home games at Coleman Coliseum. The ‘under’ is 7-6 overall for the Rebels this year.

**Auburn at Kentucky**

--LVSC tabbed Kentucky (14-4 SU, 9-3 ATS) as a 12 ½-point home favorite for this SEC showdown at Rupp Arena.

--Billy Gillispie’s squad is out to a 3-0 start in SEC play, cruising to a trio of wins by double-digit margins. The Wildcats dropped Vandy 70-60 at home before going on the road to trounce both Tennessee and Georgia last week.

--Jodie Meeks dropped a school-record 54 points on the Vols in a performance for the ages last Tuesday. Then on Sunday at UGA, Meeks had 22 points to lead the ‘Cats to a 68-45 triumph as nine-point road favorites.

--Auburn (11-6 SU, 8-3 ATS) bounced back from a pair of SEC losses to LSU and Florida by trashing Alabama 85-71 Saturday as a six-point home ‘chalk.’ Tay Waller scored a game-high 22 points, while Korvotney Barber finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

--UK has covered the number in five straight games and eight of its last nine. The ‘Cats are 10-2 SU and 5-2 ATS at home. They are 4-1 ATS as double-digit favorites.

--Auburn owns a 3-2 spread record as an underdog this season. The Tigers cashed tickets in their lone double-digit underdog spot, an 81-74 loss at Xavier as 12 ½-point ‘dogs.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern with Raycom Sports providing the telecast.
