Wednesday's Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards

With my VI cohort Brad Young handling the preview for Wednesday’s crucial ACC showdown between Wake Forest and Duke, I’ll take care of trying to prep gamblers for the rest of the card, particularly several televised tilts.

**Kansas at Nebraska**

--Unless you’re a die-hard fan of KU or Nebraska, this game is going to get minimal run on your television Wednesday night. Unless, of course, you make a large wager on this ESPN2 contest slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Kansas (15-4 straight up, 9-4 against the spread) as a five-point favorite with a total of 131.

--Nebraska (12-6 SU, 5-5 ATS) hasn’t tasted an NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998. If the Cornhuskers are hoping to go dancing this season, a win in this spot is almost mandatory. They own an 11-2 SU record and a 3-2 ATS mark at home.

--Doc Sadler’s team has lost back-to-back games and three of its last four, including Saturday’s 76-74 loss to Oklahoma St. in overtime. The ‘Huskers failed to cover the number as 2 ½-point home favorites. Sophomore guard Cookie Miller had 19 points in the losing effort.

--Since losing 75-62 at Michigan St., Bill Self’s squad has won its first four Big 12 games both SU and ATS. KU thumped Iowa St. by an 82-67 count Saturday as a seven-point road ‘chalk.’ For the 15th time in 19 games, Sherron Collins had a team-high 26 points. Collins leads the team in scoring and is third in the Big 12 with an 18.7 points per game average.

--Self is getting outstanding play from sophomore center Cole Aldrich, who leads the Big 12 in field-goal percentage (63.6%) and blocked shots (2.7 per game). Aldrich is also averaging 15.4 PPG (12th in Big 12) and 9.8 rebounds per contest (second in Big 12).

--Nebraska has only been a home underdog once this year, beating Missouri 56-51 as a three-point puppy. Meanwhile, KU is 2-0 both SU and ATS as a road favorite.

--The ‘under’ is 7-3 overall for Nebraska, 4-1 in its home assignments.

--The ‘over’ is 8-5 overall for KU.

--KU has won 11 in a row and 20 of the last 21 against Nebraska. Most importantly, the Jayhawks are 9-1 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings. The ‘over’ is 6-2-1 in the last nine Nebraska-KU encounters.

--KU is 4-0 in Big 12 play, while Nebraska has a 2-3 mark in league play.

**LSU at Tennessee**

--Has Tennessee (12-6 SU, 7-8-1 ATS) played itself onto the bubble? No, it says here, because the Volunteers played a killer non-conference schedule with a pair of games against Gonzaga, in addition to facing Georgetown, Memphis, Kansas and Marquette. They beat the Hoyas and the Golden Eagles, not to mention a quality victory over mid-major power Siena.

--LSU (15-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) is coming off its first home loss of the season to Xavier by a 70-60 count as a 2 ½-point favorite. Marcus Thornton had a game-high 30 points in defeat.

--Bruce Pearl’s team is hoping to bounce back from a 54-52 home loss to Memphis as a three-point favorite. UT junior forward Tyler Smith had 13 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.

--LVSC opened the Vols as 7 ½-point favorites. Kenny White, the Chief Operating Officer at LVSC, made the number 10. LVSC oddsmaker Mike Seba had the lowest number (6 1/2).

--UT is 7-3 SU and 3-4-1 ATS at home this season. The Vols’ losses at Thompson-Boling Arena have come to Kentucky, Gonzaga (in OT) and Memphis.

--UT leads the SEC in scoring with an 81.2 PPG average. However, the Vols are last in scoring defense, allowing 74.3 PPG.

--LSU’s Thornton, a senior combo guard who isn’t afraid to hoist a few jumpers, is fourth in the SEC in scoring with an 18.9 PPG average.

--LSU has covered the number in four straight against UT and six of the last seven.

--The ‘under’ has cashed in three straight for UT. That has resulted in an 8-8 overall record and a 4-4 home mark for UT totals.

--The ‘over’ is 6-5 overall for LSU, but the ‘under’ has hit in both of the Tigers’ SEC road games. They are 1-1 both SU and ATS in those SEC road assignments.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern. Gamblers in the southeast can catch this game on Raycom Sports, while others can watch via ESPN’s Full-Court Package.

**North Carolina at FSU**

--LVSC opened North Carolina (17-2 SU, 8-9 ATS) as an 11 ½-point favorite.

--FSU (16-4 SU, 9-4-1 ATS) hasn’t gone to the NCAA Tournament since 1998 when Steve Robinson’s first team – with Pat Kennedy’s players – made it to the second round before losing to Valpo. More than a decade later, the Seminoles appear to be in excellent position to head their name called on Selection Sunday. A win in this spot would obviously be huge.

--UNC has won won three in a row, going 2-1 ATS, since dropping its first two ACC games. The Tar Heels are off a dominant 94-70 win over Clemson last Wednesday as 13-point home favorites. Wayne Ellington was nothing short of sensational, producing 25 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Tyler Hansbrough, last season’s Wooden Award winner, had 20 points and 10 boards.

--Leonard Hamilton’s team has won eight of its 10 home games, compiling a 2-3 spread record. There was no shame in either home loss for the ‘Noles that came against Pitt and Duke.

--FSU is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six lined games. The ‘Noles are off a 73-62 win at Virginia as one-point road favorites. Senior guard Toney Douglas had 21 points and five assists for the winners.

--Both of these schools are in a three-way tie with Clemson for third place in the ACC with 3-2 records in conference play.

--UNC has won nine in a row over Florida St., winning the last five meetings by double-digit margins. However, the ‘Noles are a respectable 5-5 ATS in the last 10 encounters.

--The ‘under’ is 8-6 overall for FSU, 4-1 in its home games. Meanwhile, UNC has watched the ‘over’ go 9-8 overall.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern with television coverage provided by ESPN’s Full-Court Package.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--America was introduced to Ole Miss freshman guard Terrico White last night. The phenom from Memphis, who garnered Mr. Basketball honors in Tennessee last year, did not disappoint. In fact, he was nothing short of sensational. First of all, he was the catalyst in the Rebels’ stunning 85-80 win over Kentucky as nine-point underdogs. Bettors backing Ole Miss on the money line earned a plus-350 payout ($350 net on $100 wagers).

Back to White, who finished with 21 points, seven assists and five rebounds. He also ran the point, handling Kentucky’s pressure defense with just two turnovers. Most notably, White threw down one of the sickest dunks you’ll ever see in traffic over both Patrick Patterson and Perry Stevenson.

Back to Ole Miss – I made the mistake of saying yesterday that this was virtually a ‘throw-away season’ for the Rebels since three starters were down with season-ending injuries, including star point guard Chris Warren. I was way wrong with that. Now in terms of making the NCAA Tournament, I was right. But there’s plenty to play for in Oxford. There’s not a senior on the Ole Miss roster.

So next year, Andy Kennedy will have Warren, David Huertas (15 points last night), White, Trevor Gaskins (SEC All-Freshman selection last year) and Zach Graham rotating as the three guards/wings on the court. The five ‘bigs’ will be Murphy Holloway, Eniel Polynice (10.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG LY), Malcolm White, DeAundre Cranston (how about his energy vs. UK!) and Terrance Henry. That’s a Top 25 team for sure.

--Most common question at the lunch table in Oxford today: Think Coach Kennedy 'had fun' when he got home from last night's big win?

--LVSC opened Florida as a 17-point favorite for tonight’s home game against Georgia at the O-Dome. The Gators, who are coming off a blowout win Sunday at Vandy, are 3-4 ATS as double-digit favorites. The ‘under’ is 8-2-1 in the last 11 head-to-head meetings between these SEC rivals. The ‘under’ has cashed in three straight for UGA this year and five of UF’s last six.

--Georgia's regular-season road record under head coach Dennis Felton: 9-47

Duke at Wake Forest
By Brad Young

The last two teams to be ranked first in the Associated Press poll collide at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum when top-ranked Duke visits sixth-ranked Wake Forest. The Blue Devils have ascended to the top spot compliments of their current 10-game winning streak, while the Demon Deacons enter this contest off their first setback of the season.

Duke sits atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with an unblemished 5-0 league record, while Wake Forest is 1 ½ games behind at 3-1. The Demon Deacons are a ½-game behind Virginia Tech, but a ½-game ahead of Clemson, North Carolina and Florida State.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed Duke as a one-point road ‘chalk’ over Wake Forest, with the total set at 152. ESPN will provide coverage of this ACC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Duke (18-1 straight up, 11-7 against the spread) routed Maryland Saturday as a 15 ½-point home favorite, 85-44. The Blue Devils improved to 3-1 ATS their last four outings with that victory. The ‘under’ is 5-1-1 their last seven games.

Duke’s domination over the Terrapins was across the board. The Blue Devils outrebounded Maryland, 52-29, while shooting 43 percent (31-of-73) from the field and limiting the Terps to 28 percent (18-of-64). Guard Gerald Henderson stepped up with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Kyle Singler added 11 and seven.

The Blue Devils are 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS on the road, winning those affairs by an average score of 73-62. Duke’s lone setback of the season occurred at Michigan December 6 as a 10-point road ‘chalk,’ 81-73. The Blue Devils follow this contest with a home game against Virginia.

Wake Forest (16-1 SU, 8-5 ATS) takes the court for the first time since suffering its first setback of the season. The Demon Deacons fell to Virginia Tech last Wednesday as a decided 13-point home favorite, 78-71. That setback also snapped a five-game winning streak ATS. The combined 149 points eclipsed the 144-point closing total, ending back-to-back ‘under’ outings.

Wake Forest won the rebounding battle, 35-32, but couldn’t dig out of a 10-point halftime deficit. The Demon Deacons shot 43 percent (28-of-65) from the field, but allowed the Hokies to connect at a 50-percent clip (25-of-50). Four starters reached double digits in scoring, led by Jeff Teague’s 23 points and five rebounds.

Wake Forest is 8-1 SU at home but just 3-2 ATS, winning those affairs by an average score of 84-62. The Demon Deacons follow this matchup with a two-game road trip against Georgia Tech and Miami.

Duke and Wake Forest have split the last two meetings SU and ATS, with the home team prevailing each time. The Blue Devils triumphed two years ago as a 15 ½-point home favorite, 62-40, while the Demon Deacons prevailed last season as an 8 ½-point home ‘chalk,’ 86-73.

(1) Duke (18-1, 10-7-1 ATS) at (6) Wake Forest (16-1, 8-5 ATS)

Back on top of the national rankings for the first time since 2006, Duke faces its toughest ACC foe to date when it travels to Veterans Memorial Coliseum for a clash with sixth-ranked Wake Forest.

The Blue Devils pummeled Maryland 85-44 as a 15-point home favorite Saturday, posting their largest margin of victory ever against the Terrapins. Duke, which is the third different No. 1 team in the last three weeks, has won 10 in a row, going 5-3-1 ATS in lined contests, with eight of the victories coming by double digits. During the run, coach Mike Krzyzewski’s club has posted an average margin of victory of 22.7 points per game, including 21 ppg in ACC play.

Wake Forest has been idle since last Wednesday, when it suffered its first loss of the season, a 78-71 setback to Virginia Tech as a 13-point favorite, snapping a 5-0 ATS run. The loss came just two days after the Demon Deacons took over the top spot in the rankings. Wake Forest has scored 78 and 71 points in its last two games after notching more than 80 points in 12 of its first 15 games.

Duke is 5-0 SU and 3-2 ATS in conference play (2-0, 1-1 ATS) on the road), while the Demon Deacons are 3-1 SU and ATS in the ACC. The Blue Devils are putting up 72.4 ppg and yielding a paltry 51.6 ppg in conference, with Wake Forest averaging 81 ppg and giving up 74.5 ppg in league action.

The Demon Deacons ended a five-game SU and a six-game ATS losing skid to Duke with last year’s surprising 86-73 rout of the Blue Devils as an 8½-point underdog. The home team has won eight of the last nine clashes going back to 2003 and is 13-2 ATS in the last 15 battles.

The Blue Devils, who are coming off a three-game homestand, are 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS on the highway. They’re also 4-1 ATS in their last five games after a victory of 20 points or more. Wake Forest is 9-1 in its gym (4-2 ATS in lined games), and the Deacons are on ATS streaks of 5-1 against winning teams, 5-2 on Wednesday and 7-0 at home against teams with a winning road record.

Duke is on “under” streaks of 20-6 overall, 4-1 on the highway, 10-1 in ACC play, 5-0 on Wednesday and 10-2 after a spread-cover. On the flip side, Wake Forest has gone over the total in five of its last seven at home and seven of its last 10 against winning teams, and the over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in this rivalry and 4-1 in the last five clashes in Winston Salem.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

(3) Pitt (18-1, 8-5-1 ATS) at (21) Villanova (15-4, 8-7 ATS)

Pitt shoots for its third consecutive Big East victory and second in a row on the road when it visits the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia for a battle with inconsistent Villanova.

The Panthers have bounced back from their only loss of the season – a 69-63 setback at Louisville as a two-point underdog – with a pair of impressive wins and covers. They knocked off Syracuse 78-60 as a nine-point home favorite 11 days ago, then went to West Virginia on Sunday and punked the Mountaineers 79-67 as a one-point pup. Pitt has scored at least 70 points in all but two of 19 games and it has held its last six opponents under 70 points, giving up 63.2 ppg during this stretch.

Villanova shook off a tough 89-83 loss at then-No. 3 UConn a week ago with Saturday’s 70-61 victory at South Florida, cashing as a six-point road chalk. The Wildcats have alternated SU wins and losses in their last seven games, but they’ve followed up an 0-3 ATS slide with three straight spread-covers.

Pitt is 6-1 SU and 4-3 ATS in Big East play, including 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS on the road, and the Panthers are averaging 76.1 ppg and allowing 64.4 ppg in league play. Villanova has split its first six Big East contests both SU and ATS, putting up 75 ppg but allowing 72 ppg.

The Panthers are on a 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS roll in this rivalry, but the schools split last year’s two meetings with Villanova eking out a 64-63 victory as a three-point home favorite and Pitt taking a 69-57 decision as a seven-point home chalk. The underdog is 3-1 ATS in the last four battles.

Pitt is on ATS streaks of 6-2-1 on the road, 7-3 in Big East play and 4-1 versus winning teams, but it has failed to cash in five of its last six on Wednesday. Villanova is 4-1 ATS in its last five on Wednesday and 4-0 ATS in its last four at home against teams with a winning road record.

For Pitt, the over is on streaks of 13-4 in league action, 5-1 on Wednesday and 4-0 after a spread-cover. The Wildcats are on “over” stretches of 5-1 overall and 6-1 in Big East action, and the under is 18-6 in Villanova’s last 24 at home and 5-0 in its last five against winning teams. Also, the last five meetings in this rivalry have stayed low.

ATS ADVANTAGE: PITT

(5) North Carolina (17-2, 8-9 ATS) at Florida State (16-4, 9-4-1 ATS)

North Carolina goes after its fourth straight win overall and its 10th consecutive victory over Florida State as this ACC rivalry resumes with a matchup at the Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

Since dropping their first two conference games to Boston College and Wake Forest, the Tar Heels have regained their dominant form with three straight double-digit victories over Virginia (83-61), Miami, Fla. (82-65) and Clemson (94-70), going 2-1 ATS during the winning streak. In last Wednesday’s rout of Clemson, North Carolina shot 53 percent from the field and held the one-loss Tigers to 35.3 percent and easily cashed as a 13-point home chalk.

Florida State rolled past Virginia 73-62 as a one-point favorite, improving to 3-1 (2-1-1 ATS) in its last four games, three of which were played on the road. Like UNC, the Seminoles are 3-2 in the ACC (3-1-1 ATS), and in their two league games, they lost 66-58 to Duke but covered as a 9½-point underdog and edged Maryland 76-73 in overtime, falling short as a four-point favorite.

The Tar Heels have scored at least 90 points 10 times in their last 16 games, and they’ve eclipsed the 80-point mark in 17 of 19 contests this season, helping them rank second in the nation in scoring (93 ppg) and 10th in shooting (49.2 percent). In ACC play, Roy Williams’ squad is averaging 85.2 ppg and giving up 74.6 ppg. Meanwhile, the Seminoles are outscoring conference foes by just three ppg (71-68).

North Carolina posted three double-digit victories over Florida State last year, but went just 1-2 ATS. The Tar Heels won 84-73 in overtime as a 9½-point road chalk in their one visit to Tallahassee, then prevailed 90-77 at home and 82-70 in the ACC tournament, coming up just short as a 16-point and 13½-point favorite, respectively. UNC is 9-0 in the last nine meetings (5-4 ATS), going 3-0 SU and ATS at Florida State. Finally, the visitor is 6-2 ATS in the last eight head-to-head meetings.

North Carolina is just 4-7 ATS in its last 11, alternating spread-covers in the last eight games. The Heels are also in ATS funks of 2-6 in league play and 2-7 after a SU win, but they’re also on positive pointspread stretches of 6-0 on Wednesday, 39-18-1 after a spread-cover and 37-15 after a victory over more than 20 points. The Seminoles are on ATS runs of 4-1-1 overall, 7-1-2 in ACC action, 9-4-1 after a SU win and 11-5-2 against winning teams, but they’re 5-13-1 ATS in their last 19 home games and 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight on Wednesday.

The under is 4-1 in North Carolina’s last five on the road and 14-6 in FSU’s last 20 on Wednesday, but the Heels have topped the total in seven of their last nine on Wednesday. Finally, the under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in this rivalry.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NORTH CAROLINA

Tips and Trends

#1 Duke at #4 Wake Forest

Duke (-2, O/U 149): The Blue Devils sit atop the national rankings for the first time since the 2005-06 season - replacing their opponent - and have become the third ACC team this season to reach #1. “It’s a big deal for us because it means we’re playing really well,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “We talked about it last week that, just don’t worry about anything, let’s just play. It’s the same thing we’re going to tell them going into this next week. It’s an honor and it says you’re playing real well. You don’t get anything from it except a really big headline when you lose.”

Duke is 10-0 SU in its last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Duke's last 11 games vs. ACC.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 73

Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons barely knew what it was like to be the best team in the country, as they suffered their first loss only two days after achieving the top spot. Wake Forest may have been caught looking ahead to this game against Duke last Wednesday in a 78-71 loss at home to Virginia Tech. “We’re going to find out about our guys a little bit,” Demon Deacons head coach Dino Gaudio said. “There’s tough kids in that locker room. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ll bow their necks and go back to work.” Wake is only 4-24 all-time against the #1 team in the nation with all of the wins coming when ranked outside the Top 25.

Home team is 13-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
The OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 76 (Side Play of the Day)
