CONFIDENTIAL TIP-OFF

Saturday, *CALIFORNIA over Stanford (Day Game)...Special game for Bears’ new coach Mike Montgomery (the long-time Stanford mentor), who lost 75-69 in his return to Stanford back on Jan. 17. His Cal charges got back on track with their 86-71 rout of Washington last week, thanks in part to improved play from 5-10 jr. PG Jerome Randle and the growing confidence shown by sweet-shooting 7-0 C Jordan Wilkes (14 points Feb. 5 vs. the Huskies). The Bears, who lead the nation in 3-point shooting at 44.9%, can be expected to hit better at home than the 5 of 15 triples they converted earlier in Palo Alto.

*CALIFORNIA 76 - Stanford 63 RATING - 11

SANTA CLARA over *Loyola-Marymount...WCC sources have alerted us to play close attention to rampaging Santa Clara bunch that confirmed its recent uptick with 70-52 thrashing of Saint Mary’s Feb. 7. Recent juggling of lineup by 2nd-year HC Kerry Keating (sr. Calvin Johnson back in starting lineup) has re-energized Broncos, with impressive frosh Gs Foster & Rahon now flourishing in 3-G sets. And struggling LMU (1-23 SU, no covers last 5) again overmatched vs. SCU’s 6-10 moose Bryant, who gobbled 22 rebounds in Broncs’ 82-56 win Jan. 29.

SANTA CLARA 79 - *Loyola-Marymount 50 RATING - 10

South Carolina vs. Alabama
Play: Alabama +2

This matchup between two Southeastern Conference clubs that probably are not going to the Big Dance in March. South Carolina (17-5) has an outside shot but most likely will end up in the NIT. Alabama has beaten the Gamecocks the last five times they played at home and I expect that to continue today. Bama is 11-3 at home and can win this one OUTRIGHT! ALABAMA!

700-Unit College Money Maker - WISCONSIN

There is no way Ohio State is going into Madison and coming out with a win or a cover. The Badgers have won five straight at home and seven of the last 10 overall against the Buckeyes.

Wisconsin seems to have righted the ship with three straight victories, both SU and ATS. They were in the midst of a six-game losing streak when they scored a much-needed victory over Illinois back on Feb. 5, winning 63-50 as a four-point favorite.

On Wednesday the Badgers got a 69-52 victory over Iowa at home, cashing as 11-point favorites. They are 16-7 ATS in their last 23 games after a straight-up victory.

Ohio State has won four in a row but three of those four were at home. They are just 2-2 SU in their last four on the road and their scoring drops severly when they hit the highway. They average just 66 points a game on the road as compared to 75.2 in their last five overall and 55.3 percent shooting from the floor.

The Badgers have gotten the kinks out and seem to be back to normal, playing stingy defense and having quality offensive possessions. Lay the chalk and play Wisconsin in this one.

400♦ FLORIDA

First place is on the line, for Florida’s sake, and the fact is the Bulldogs are an absolute mess. And while the upper brass would like to believe it was Dennis Felton’s fault and that he left the program in a steaming heap, it should have let him trudge through the season and get some kind of production out of this team. Instead, we’re talking about 11 straight losses – including five at home by an average margin of 12.6 points per loss. The Bulldogs are averaging a modest 60.5 points during this losing streak, while they’re giving up 74.2 points in those games.

The betting trends are on our side, as Florida is on ATS runs of 5-1 on the road, 9-3 when playing teams that are sporting losing marks, 6-2 in conference play and 16-7 after an ATS win. On the other hand, the Dawgs are mired in losing spread streaks of 0-4 at home and 2-7 in the SEC. Delving into this series, the Gators are 5-1 ATS the last six meetings and 7-2 versus the books when playing in Athens

30-Dime Utah State

The Aggies are off to their best start in school history, they own an overall record of 23-1, and are currently tied with No. 2 Oklahoma for the most wins and best record in the nation. And while I know Taco Bell Arena is one of the toughest places to play – in America – the Broncos don’t have the kind of talent to penetrate Stew Morrill’s staunch defense that has become trademark during his tenure. Most people might not realize this, but Utah State is the only team in the nation to win at least 23 games in each of the last 10 years, and that’s because of Morrill’s tutelage.

As a team, Utah State leads the Western Athletic Conference in eight categories, including: scoring defense (59.9 points per game), scoring margin (+12.9 ppg), free throw percentage (.736), field goal percentage (.506), field goal percentage defense (.411), rebounding defense (27.4 rebounds per game), rebounding margin (+6.8 rpg), and assist/turnover ratio (1.45). And believe me, this kid Gary Wilkinson is something to watch, a vision to be amazed by, as his numbers are off the charts, while teammate Tai Wesley is dominating on defense for the Aggies.

Utah State has already knocked off Boise once this season, a 79-65 win in Logan, Utah. After the Broncos led 24-22 in the first half, USU went on a 21-9 run to close the half to lead 43-33 at intermission. To get ready for this game, the Broncos have split their last four games, against: Idaho, Houston Baptist, San Jose State and Fresno State. And with a dismal 2-7 ATS mark in their last nine against winning teams, I’ll have to side with the road team here.
