Mike Wynn Sports

Illinois @ Ohio St

A big game for both these schools Saturday night as Ohio St hosts the Fighting Illini of Illinois. Ohio St after two straight losses is suddenly a bubble team with a 17-7 record and a 7-6 record in the relatively weak Big10 conference. Illinois is ranked in the Top 20 this week and look like a sure bet for a bid, but this team is off an embarrassment losing 38-33 at home to Penn St. Illinois shot just 30% from the floor and had an amazing 0 free throws in the contest. Illinois is still within shouting distance of Michigan St in the Big10 standings at 9-5 and they do have a home date with the Spartans on March 1st. So let’s take a look at both these teams and we’ll start with the visitors from Illinois.

Illinois has been a bit of a surprise team this year in the Big10. Bruce Weber’s squad was not expected to contend for a Big10 title but they’ve gotten solid play out of sophomores McCamey, Tisdale, and Davis. These three guys lead the team in scoring this season led by McCamey’s 11.8 per game and Davis and Tisdale provide the muscle pulling down 11.8 boards per game between them. Illinois obviously a young team so they’re going to have nights like they did against Penn St on Wednesday and it’s yet to be seen whether they’ll hold up in post-season play. Illinois just 4-4 on the road this season and it’s probably a good bet to say that they won’t get to far.

Ohio St off back to back losses at Wisconsin and Northwestern need to get it turned around at home Saturday. Buckeyes a solid 13-2 straight up at home with the only losses against West Virginia & Michigan St, and they’re led by sophomore G/F Evan Turner’s 17.2 points per game. Turner also leads the team in rebounds at 7.3, steals at 1.9, and 3 point shooting with a 47.4% success rate. Much like Illinois, Ohio St is a young squad with no seniors on the roster, and most of their production comes from sophomores and freshmen. Much like Illinois the Buckeyes are young and tend to struggle on the road as evidenced by their 2-5 road record. Ohio St’s tournament resume could really use a quality win and they’ve got their chance here with Illinois at home Saturday night.

As far as a pick on this one Saturday night I’ll advise laying the points with Ohio St. Buckeyes are a 3 point favorite on the advance numbers here and as I’ve mentioned already both teams are like night and day at home and on the road. Ohio St is really in a must win spot here if they want to slip into the NCAA tournament and I expect they’ll get it

Vancouver Canucks at Toronto Maple Leafs
Prediction: Toronto Maple Leafs

Vancouver has been on a roll, but I expect them to stumble this evening as there is great value on the home team this evening! In fact it's interesting to note that Toronto is a great 3-1 its last 4 against Northwest division opponents! Look for Mats Sundins return to T.O. be a miserable one; play on TORONTO!

1 Unit on Kentucky -3

I like the Wildcats at home in this bounce back spot following a double digit loss to Vandy. The Wildcats handled the Vols 90-72 on the road in the first meeting and should have no problem taking down Tennessee again. Kentucky has won 9 of the last 11 at home in this matchup. The Wildcats are 11-1 ATS after failing to cover 6 or 7 of their last 8 against the spread since 1997, winning in these spots by an average score of 74.8 to 62.8. With Jodie Meeks as the difference maker, I'll take the Wildcats.

INDIANA vs. PURDUE FREE PICK
The only thing that could stop Purdue today is a letdown against the school at the bottom of the Big 10 standings. The No. 19 Boilermakers look for a fourth straight victory Saturday when they host Indiana in the teams' only regular-season meeting. Indiana has dominated the rivalry of late by winning six of the last seven, but this years young Hoosiers (6-19, 1-12) is an entirely different team. The Boilermakers (20-6, 9-4) won 72-54 over No. 6 Michigan State on Tuesday to move within one game of the Spartans. Purdue has been hot winning five in a row at Mackey Arena and faces an Indiana team today that has lost four in a row and has struggled all year. Purdue forced 22 turnovers and held Michigan State to 32.7 percent shooting and they are holding opponents to a Big Ten-low 37.1 percent shooting. That could spell trouble for Indiana today who ranks 10th in the conference in shooting (42.4 percent) and hasn't scored more than 54 points in their last four contests. Indiana will certainly have trouble with the 6 foot 10 JaJuan Johnson scored 17 points against Michigan St. while averaging 18.2 points in his last five contests. Also E'Twaun Moore had 13 and Robbie Hummel added 11 in his first start since missing three games with a lower back injury. Indiana is coming off a 68-51 home loss to Wisconsin on Thursday and this Indiana team has just one senior on its roster and is 0-8 on the road. The lack of talent, confidence and experience will make a disastrous day again for this Indiana team today. Purdue's defense will put this one away early.

Akron vs. Valparaiso
Play: Akron -4

If Akron is focused on defense, they should hold Valpo to under 60 points in this game. This is a BIG GAME for the Zips, as they are near the top of The MAC. A lost could ruin even an NIT bid. The Zips win this by 8 points.

Drew Gordon

New Orleans at UTAH -8

Good spot to back the Jazz, as this Hornets team is in a terrible situational spot, and are overmatched at this point against a Utah team playing great basketball right now.

First off, NBA schedualers didn't do New Orleans any favors, playing their 4th game in 5 nights is brutal as far as I'm concerned, especially considering they lost a tough game in OT last night at the Lakers. I don't care how much youth you have on your roster, no team is going to be fresh coming off this much action, and you best believe we'll be seeing some tired legs tonight from Paul and company in this one.

Second, the Hornets are also running into a buzz saw, because the Jazz are rockin' and rollin' in Salt Lake, winning 6 in a row SUATS, including wins vs the cream of the NBA crop - Lakers, Celtics, and a solid Mavericks team over that span! Sorry New Orleans-backers, but your team isn't playing anywhere near the level of those teams mentioned, and it'll show in a lopsided Jazz victory tonight.

Finally, forget about all the hoopla surrounding the Tyson Chandler rescinded trade, what's important is Chandler is likely not playing tonight, and that leaves a huge hole in the Hornets interior defense. Look for Millsap to really have his way tonight, as he's coming off a sub-par effort against Boston, and needs to strut his stuff before Boozer gets back. In the end, this is a terrible situational spot for the Hornets, and they couldn't have picked a worse place to play, in that, the Jazz have been excellent at home of late. Jazz keep the home wins coming with solid win and cover Saturday night!

Take Utah over New Orleans in this NBA match up.

2♦ UTAH

California -4' at OREGON STATE

Wow does California have a score to settle here, and I couldn't care less about the Beavers' meager 2-game win streak, because it won't make a difference in this one. We all remember the Oregon State's 69-65 outright shocker as a 17'-point road dog in Berkley back in late January... And now its payback time! At the time the Beavers were playing inspired basketball, but at this point, its all bad news for Oregon State.

This time around, its California that's playing much better basketball, winners of 4 in a row SUATS. It started with an impressive win over Washington and the Bears haven't looked back since! The key has been the Bears offense, which is firing on all cylinders of late, averaging 79 ppg over their current 4-game win streak! Credit the backcourt duo of Randle and Christopher, who've been lights out of late.

Herein lies the problem for the Beavers, because while the Bears offense is soaring right now, their own attack has sagged considerably, averaging just 54 ppg on 41% shooting over their last 5 games. Sure, they got two wins over relatively average offensive teams in their last two games, but keeping pace with the Bears suddenly surging offense is another question entirely.

Bottom line, its a bad day to be a Beaver, as this Bears squad is hungry and out for revenge. In the end, the Beavers own offensive issues are their undoing in this match up, as they simply cannot keep pace with a Cal team that's shredding the nets right now!

Take California over Oregon State in this college hoops match up.

(552) UTEP Miners +9

UTEP has stepped up the defensive play recently and they have some explosive scorers in Stefon Jackson and Randy Culpepper. I expect this one to be close as the Miners gave the Tigers all they wanted last year in Memphis when the Tigers were the number one team in the nation. There is also plenty of familiarity in the match up between these two teams. UTEP coach Tony Barbee played for John Calipari at UMASS and was his assistant at Memphis for several years. UTEP assistant Tony Madlock played at Memphis, and Miner's assistant Milt Wagner was director of basketball operations at Memphis. Take the points.

Tennessee +3

There were years in the SEC and especially in this rivalry when Kentucky got all the talent, and the Vols were second class. Those days are gone as Bruce pearl has grabbed talent from everywhere, even other teams rosters( Tyler Smith, and J.P Prince). Meeks had a record day vs the Vols in the first meeting, but the young Tennessee guards are improving weekly. Off a bad loss to Ole Miss , and playing with revenge and a shot at the SEC East, the most talented team on the floor today is in Orange, not Blue. Talent still wins Basketball Games. I went to Memorial Gym to watch UT vs Vandy and must say the Vandy team was the least talented I have seen in years, and they made Kentucky look bad last week without SS Inside Man Patterson. Tennessee will dominate the inside in this contest, and come up with an outright win in Lexington. Throw the trends away today, Kentucky is not a good team by any stretch. We will take the points with the more Talented Vols.

WeCoverSpreads

Louisiana Tech+9.5:

No way Murray State should be laying this many points fellas. I know Tech doesn't travel well but they have shown improvement on the road lately. They just played New Mexico St. tight, played extremely well in Utah State one of the hardest places to visit. They Beat Nevada on the road as well. We'll back them tonight against a good Murray State team. They're playing much better the past 8 games not losing by a deficit of more than 8 points. Those 8 games are against some pretty good WAC teams too.

Siena-7:

They are rolling right now and this is a team Northern Iowa didn't want to have to come face. After Northern Iowa was rolling themselves they have seemed to teeter out. Losing 3 of their last four games. Siena is 3-0-1 ATS this season in non conference home games winning all four straight up. Northern Iowa is 0-3 ATS in true non-conference road games this season. They haven't had to travel this far all season either. Asking a 20 year old kid to travel half way across the country and play against one of the hottest smaller conference teams in the nation isn't an easy task considering how Northern Iowa has been playing. Siena rolls!

George Mason+8:

Their last five road games they lost but they were against some tough teams: Old Dominion, James Madison, VCU, Northeaster, and a slip up at Delaware. These games were all decided by an average of 3.5 points though. We take in consideration the fact how well Creighton is playing. This team is no joke they're really good fellas. George Mason has proven to me not only they can play on the road but they've done well on the road non-conference. They beat a very good Vermont team who has one of the best players in the country in Markus Blakely. They beat East Carolina which isn't so impressing but they only lost by 4 to a really good Dayton team on the road. I trust Mason tonight to play Creighton very tough fellas because they need this win bad!

Loyola MD at Drexel
Prediction: Loyola MD

Ai Simulator 3* graded play on Loyola-Maryland as they travel to face Drexel slated to start at 5:00 EST. Supporting this graded play is a system that has gone 104-59 ATS for 64% winners since 1997. Play on road dogs of 10 to 19.5 points after being beaten by the spread by 30 or more points total in their last five games and is a bad team sporting a win percentage of 20% to 40% playing a team with a winning record. LM is a strong 10-1 ATS (+8.9 Units) in road games versus poor shooting teams making <=42% of their shots after 15+ games over the last 3 seasons; 8-1 ATS (+6.9 Units) in road games versus poor shooting teams making <=42% of their shots over the last 2 seasons; 8-1 ATS (+6.9 Units) in road games versus poor offensive teams scoring =16 assists/game on the season, in February games. This is the first lied game for Garner-Webb. There have been 5 games where they have shot under 40%. In the game following this embarrassing performance they are 5-1 SU. They shot just 30% in a 5 points loss to Winthrop in their last game sop it stands to reason that they will have a far stronger game tonight.
