2 Star Selection
ORLANDO (-9 ½) over Philadelphia

The 76ers are a decent team, but they haven’t competed well against the league’s elite teams this season, going 2-11 ATS against the Cavaliers, Lakers, Celtics, and Magic (0-3 ATS against Orlando). I expect that trend to continue in game 1 with the Magic applying to a very good 60-15-2 ATS game 1 situation. I’m a bit concerned about the health of Magic small forward Rashard Lewis, who has a bad knee, but he says he’s ready to go and is listed as probable. My ratings favor Orlando by 10 points if they’re healthy, so the line is fair, but I’ll resist making this a 3-Star Best Bet in case Lewis isn’t ready to play at his normal level. I’ll take Orlando in a 2-Star Best Bet at -10 or less (Strong Opinion at -10 1/2).2-Stars at -10 or less.

Opinions

L.A. LAKERS (-11 ½) over Utah

Utah has allowed 50% shooting or more in 8 of their last 10 games and beating the Lakers without playing good defense is not going to happen. The Jazz have been good at home this season, but they are 0-9 ATS since January as a road underdog of 4 points or more, including two 13 point losses to the Lakers in Los Angeles. The Jazz do play better when rested, but I’d still favor the Lakers by 12 points using Utah’s road games with rest against the Lakers’ home games. I’ll consider the Lakers a Strong Opinion at -11 ½, a regular opinion at -12 and I’d take the Lakers in a 2-Star Best Bet at -11 on the basis of a very good 60-15-2 ATS game 1 situation that applies at -11 or less.

ATLANTA (-4 ½) over Miami

The Hawks won 3 of 4 games from the Heat this season (1 without Wade playing for Miami) despite making just 24% of their 3-point shots (17 for 70) in those games. The Hawks shoot a lot of 3-pointers at a decent success rate (20 per game at 37%) and they certainly should make more than normal against a Heat defense that gives up a lot of open 3-point looks (Miami allowed 39% 3-pointers). My ratings favor Atlanta by 6 points in this game and the Hawks are 16-6 ATS at home this season when not favored by 6 points or more. I’ll lean with Atlanta at -5 or less.

New Orleans (+6) over DENVER

New Orleans has been a disappointing team so far this season, but they have the pieces to be better than they’ve shown and I’ll lean with the Hornets in game 1 of this series. My ratings favor Denver by 5 ½ points, which is where the line on this game opened, so we have a little bit of line value on the Hornets at +6 and New Orleans also applies to a 15-3 ATS game 1 or round 1 angle. I’ll lean with New Orleans at +5 ½ or more.

STU FEINER

Philadelphia 76ers (+9') at Orlando Magic (190')

Two teams here that didn’t play all that well down the stretch, but I like these generous points in this spot. Orlando just hasn’t been clicking of late as both Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu continue to battle through injuries. Meanwhile, the Sixers’ Thaddeus Young has returned from injury and he provides a nice scoring complement to Iguodala and Miller. And with Jameer Nelson no longer with Orlando, Miller has a clear advantage in the backcourt and that makes a huge difference come playoff time. Just look at Derrick Rose’s performance Saturday in Boston. Big Josh Howard will get his in the paint, but Sam Dalembert and the youngster Speights will bang around on him and Howard is a sub-par free throw shooter. Magic have failed to cover in five of their last six overall and this is just too many points to cover for a team that’s not clicking. Philly plus the points is the way to go.

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS (+9') 100 Dimes

Miami Heat (+5) at Atlanta Hawks (186')

This one’s going to be a tight one and it will come down to the final possession, but win or lose, the Heat will stay inside this Game 1 number. Miami is on a 21-8 spread run against the Hawks and have covered seven of their last nine at Philips Arena. This is just too big a number for Atlanta to cover, especially with a limited bench and Marvin Williams still not 100 percent recovered by any means from his back injury. Atlanta has failed to cover in six of its last eight overall, five of six at home and four straight against team with winning records. Each of Miami’s dinged up players (Haslem, Beasley, Moon) are set to go tonight and of course Miami has the Dwyane Wade (league’s leading scorer, most likely MVP runner-up) who can erase any shortcomings the Heat might have. He’ll come large tonight and Miami will keep this one close.
