PICK: Portland Trail Blazers
Offered at: 13.5 BoDog
REASON FOR PICK: The NBA Championship banner will be lowered tonight in San Antonio and while the Spurs will once again be a force in the league, distractions will be all over the place tonight. The Spurs are the favorites in the Western Conference again this year as their roster remains mostly intact but like all favorites, their lines are overpriced to start the season. San Antonio has owned this series, winning nine straight meetings but the gap is closing.
Greg Oden is out for the season which is a big blow for Portland but his loss is minimized with the acquisition of Channing Frye, the improvement of second-year man LaMarcus Aldridge, and the return of a healthy Joel Przybilla down low. The Blazers also feature 2005-06 Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy. Portland improved its win total by 11 games from the previous season and it finished a solid 9-7 in its final 16 games from last season, providing some great momentum heading into this year.
Prior NBA Champions are usually slow starting out of the gate the following season since their lines are over-adjusted to start the season. The last five NBA Champions (Miami, San Antonio, Detroit, San Antonio and LA Lakers) have combined for a 16-36 ATS mark (30.8 percent) through their first two weeks of the following year after their title. It does take a while to adjust and the opposition obviously wants to take out those teams to start their year off right. Remember Miami losing by 40 in its opener last season? Revenge spot for the Warriors, knocked from the playoffs last spring by the Jazz. Unfortunately for them, they don't play well enough against Utah to be laying more than a basket here, having lost 15-of-24 at home to the Jazz while going 10-14 ATS. Take Utah!

Pick 'n' roll: Today's best NBA bets

Houston at Los Angeles (+5 ½, 195)
Never underestimate Kobe Bryant.
The disgruntled Lakers star will suit up tonight against the Houston Rockets despite not practicing on Saturday.
Bryant averaged more than 37 points against the Rockets last season, and scored 53 points in each meeting against them in Los Angeles. The Lakers split their season-series 2-2 both straight-up (SU) and 2-2 against the spread (ATS) versus the Rockets last season.
Tracy McGrady, on the other hand, struggled in his two meetings with the Lakers last season. The Rockets All-Star guard averaged a meager 19 points on less than 28 percent shooting in his two outings against the Lakers.
The Lakers were 2-point home underdogs in their last meeting with the Rockets and fell 107-104 in overtime, failing to cover the spread by a point. The Rockets, meanwhile, are a meager 4-9 in their last 13 overall meetings with the Lakers.
Pick: Lakers +5 ½
Utah at Golden State (-2 ½, 214)
The last time the Utah Jazz and the Golden State Warriors played each other was in the conference semifinals last season. Utah took the series in five games, covering the spread four times.
The new-look Warriors open their season tonight against the Jazz at Oracle Arena. The Warriors will be without captain Stephen Jackson, who is serving a seven-game suspension for criminal recklessness stemming from an incident outside a strip club in Indiana last season. Golden State will also be without veteran shooting guard Jason Richardson, who was dealt to the Charlotte Bobcats for eighth-overall selection Brandon Wright on draft day.
Golden State point guard Baron Davis will have to provide most of the scoring tonight against Utah. Davis averaged more than 20.1 points and 8.1 assists for the Warriors last season.
Utah forward Carlos Boozer, on the other hand, has been virtually unstoppable against Golden State. Boozer averaged more than 20 points and 14 rebounds in the conference semifinals against the Warriors last season. Utah point guard Deron Williams also matches up well with the athletic Warriors. The third-year point guard averaged more than 16 points and nine assists per game last season.
