WNBA Picks & Analysis
By Allen Moody
Bangthebook.com

Two decent games on the schedule today, with Washington traveling cross-country to take on the Sparks and New York visiting Atlanta.

Washington at Los Angeles: The Sparks have turned things up a notch after a rather slow start to the season. Los Angeles has won its last seven straight and covered its last four. The line on the game is LA -6 and 163, while my numbers make it 83-77, so we’re pretty close to the both the spread and the total.

The Mystics are 2-6 in non-conference games and 0-4 as an underdog, as the look to be the bullies of the East, beating up on some of the weaker teams but having problems when they face another tough foe. They did lose to Minnesota by 25 and 17 points. While the Sparks aren’t quite as good as the Lynx, they are fairly close.

For Los Angeles, the Lynx are waiting in the wings and the two teams meet on Thursday. I’m sure Los Angeles is aware of that, but Washington being in first place in the East may just be enough to keep them focused for this game. Los Angeles is 6-0 at home, but just 3-3 against the number. Still, think the Sparks will be focused on this one and would worry about Los Angeles after they Minnesota a bit more than I will in this spot, so will tab LA for today’s play.

New York at Atlanta: The Liberty are coming off the ugliest game in the WNBA so far this season, as they dropped a 67-54 decision to Washington last time out. Neither team shot 33% from the field. Favorites who scored fewer than 55 points their previous game are just 1-5 ATS, but home teams who lost their last two home games and take to the road next are just 10-16-1 ATS and 5-11 ATS if they are underdogs.

New York is favored by 3 and the total is 158.5. Part of that total is being influenced by New York’s dismal showing at Washington, which has skewed the Liberty’s offensive and defensive away numbers, as I have this one being 82-82. But running the same home and away calculations that I do in the NBA gave a predicted total of 147 points. Prior to their last debacle, the prediction would have been in the mid 160s.

WNBA Prediction: Washington at Los Angeles
By Nick Lagouretos
Bangthebook.com

Two of the three best teams in the WNBA so far this season, both running extended winning streaks are clashing tonight, when the defending champions and by far the hottest team in the league so far Los Angeles Sparks (11-3), are hosting the Eastern Conference leaders Washington Mystics (10-5).

Los Angeles Sparks have a 11-3 record so far this season (8-6 ATS) and currently sit on the second place of the West and of the whole league. They are running a seven-game winning streak and in their last game they won on the road against Atlanta Dream with an 85-76 score. Nneka Ogwumike leads the team in scoring with 19.7 ppg and 6.9 rpg, followed by Candace Parker with 17 ppg and team highs both in assists, with 4.6 per game and in rebounds with 8.1 per game. Chelsea Gray adds 16.1 ppg and 4.4 assists.

Washington Mystics have a 10-5 record so far this season (8-7 ATS) and currently sit on the top of the East and in the third place of the whole league. They have three consecutive wins and in their latest matchup they won at home against New York Liberty with a 67-54 score. Elena Delle Donne leads the team in scoring with 19.4 ppg, adding team highs in rebounds with 6.9 per game, and blocks with 1.4 per game. She is followed by Tayler Hill with 15.5 ppg and 2.7 assists per game, while Kristi Toliver adds 10.4 ppg.

In their previous matchup earlier this season, Los Angeles won at home with a 99-89 score. Los Angeles are perfect at home with a 6-0 record, while Washington are 3-3 on the road. Los Angeles are better offensively, scoring a league second-best 86.5 ppg to Washington’s 84, while Washington are better defensively, allowing a second-best 78.1 ppg to Los Angeles’ 78.7 (third-best). Los Angeles shoot with a league-best 49.4% in FG’s to Washington’s 42.1% (second-worse), and with a second-best 38.2% in 3-pointers, to Washington’s 32.5%. Mystics are better in rebounding, grabbing a second-best 36.3 to Sparks’ 29.2 (second-worse). Sparks are red-hot and undefeated at home, so expect them to win with relative ease today.

Prediction: Los Angeles Sparks -6

WNBA Prediction:New York at Atlanta
By Nick Lagouretos
Bangthebook.com

Two Eastern Conference teams with similar records so far and both currently running losing streaks are clashing tonight, when the struggling Atlanta Dream (5-7), are hosting the New York Liberty (7-6), who are trending down after a good start in the season.

Atlanta Dream have a 5-7 record so far this season (4-8 ATS) and currently sit on the second to last place of the Eastern Conference. They have lost six of their last seven matches after starting the season with 4-1 record, and in their last game they lost at home against Los Angeles Sparks with a 76-85 score. Tiffany Hayes leads the team in scoring with 17.4 ppg, adding 4.5 rpg. She is followed by Bria Holmes with 11.5 ppg, while Elizabeth Williams adds 10.1 ppg and a team high 8.3 rebounds per game.

New York Liberty have a 7-6 record so far this season (6-7 ATS) and currently sit on the second place of the East. They are coming from two consecutive losses and are 1-3 in their last 4 matches. In their last game they lost on the road against Washington Mystics with a 54-67 score. Tina Charles leads the team in scoring with 19.5 ppg, adding a team high 9.1 rebounds per game. She is followed by Epiphanny Prince with 15 ppg and a team high 3.7 assists per game, while Sugar Rodgers adds 13.3 ppg and 3.9 rpg.

In their previous matchup earlier this season, New York won at home with a 76-61 score. Atlanta have a 2-3 home record so far this season, while New York are 2-3 on the road. New York are better offensively, scoring 80.1 ppg to Atlanta’s 76.5 (second-worse), while Atlanta are better defensively, allowing 80.9 ppg to New York’s 81.2. Atlanta have the worst percentages in the league both in field goals, shooting with 40.6% to New York’s 43%, and in 3-pointers, with 23.1% to New York’s 32.9%. Liberty lead the league in rebounding, grabbing 37.7 to Dream’s 34.2. Atlanta have been struggling mightily lately, so pick New York for the win tonight.

Prediction: New York Liberty -3.5
