Arizona State should challenge in the Pac 10 this year, but can the Sun Devils compete for a national title? Oddsmakers have made ASU a 60/1 long shot to win the 2009 BCS National Championship.

The Sun Devils get back a lot of firepower on offense this year. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter (3,202 passing yards), running back Keegan Herring (815 rushing yards) and receiver Chris McGaha (830 receiving yards) all return for another season. Defensive, linebacker Travis Goethel (71 tackles), defensive end Dexter Davis (10.5 sacks) and safety Troy Nolan (six interceptions) also return.

The odds are in and no matter where you look, the Sun Devils are long shots at all major online sports books. Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog and Sportsbook.com have made Arizona State a 60/1 long shot to win the BCS National Championship this season, while SBG Global lists ASU’s odds at 40/1.

The defense could push the Sun Devils over the top this year. The defensive front four is outstanding and should help the secondary out dramatically. The offensive line should be much improved as well, which in turn will help Carpenter have an even better season in 2008. ASU is going to challenge USC in the Pac 10 and therefore might be a sleeper candidate for the 2009 national title.
