The Georgia Bulldogs enter the 2008 College Football season as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Georgia is one of the favorites to win the 2009 BCS Championship at 5/1 odds.
Georgia boasts some of the best offensive talent in the nation. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is a highly touted NFL prospect and running back Knowshon Moreno is already drawing comparisons to former Georgia greats Hershel Walker and Garrison Hearst. The main concern, at least offensively, is the lack of chemistry along the offensive line. Two of the four returning starters from last year are switching positions and right tackle Kiante Tripp is new altogether.
If ever Georgia was going to make a run at a national championship, it’s this season – and oddsmakers know it. Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog and Sportsbook.com have established the Bulldogs’ odds of winning the 2009 BCS Championship at 5/1, while SBG Global has set UGA’s odds at 8/1.
Stafford and Moreno are going to get most of the mention because of their Heisman Trophy candidacy. But Georgia’s offensive line and defense will be what makes the difference in whether or not this is a true national championship contender. The defense that ranked 14th nationally in 2007 returns nine starters and draws most of its inspiration from senior linebacker Darnell Ellerbe. As always, the SEC is going to be daunting. But head coach Mark Richt’s team is stacked with talent and it’s easy to see why they’re ranked No. 1 in the nation and heavily favored by oddsmakers.
