Can the Packers make another deep postseason run without quarterback Brett Favre? Oddsmakers have made Green Bay a 25/1 long shot to win the 2009 Super Bowl.

The Packers didn’t need a lot, so they didn’t make a ton of noise this past offseason. They signed linebacker Brandon Chillar, formerly of the Rams, as well as re-signed restricted running back Vernand Morency. But both of those signings were mostly for depth. In the draft, the Packers had a productive second round, landing wide receiver Jordy Nelson (Kansas State), quarterback Brian Brohm (Louisville) and defensive back Patrick Lee (Auburn).

There’s no question what people are talking about regarding the Packers this season. The retirement of Brett Favre has left everyone wondering if the Pack can compete again in 2008. After coming up one win shy of reaching the Super Bowl last year, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has the daunting task of leading Green Bay back into the postseason and beyond. The Packers are chockfull of talent, but can Rodgers lead them to the promise land?

The odds for Green Bay are all over the board this season. Current prices on the Packers’ chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl range from 14/1 at SBG Global, to 22/1 Bodog, to 25/1 at Sportsbook.com.

Oddsmakers have also set the Packers’ over/under total for wins in 2008 at 8, but clearly think Green Bay will lose more than 8 games considering the under pays out at –120 compared to –110 for the over.

The Packers have an enormous amount of talent on both sides of the ball, especially in their receiving corps and along the defensive line. Bettors are probably foaming at the mouth a bit seeing Green Bay at 25/1 to win this year’s Super Bowl, especially considering they were on the brink of reaching the big game last year. Rumors persist that Rodgers has looked thus far in training camp and if he continues to develop, the Packers might not miss a beat in 2008-09 and bettors will be able to cash in at the end.
