Many think the Jaguars can upstage the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South this year with how well they played in 2007. Oddsmakers like their chances too, and have made Jacksonville a 12/1 long shot to win the 2009 Super Bowl.
The Jaguars were able to bring back offensive tackle Maurice Williams and Tutan Reyes. They were also able to land former Raiders’ wide receiver Jerry Porter, which should be a big boost to their receiving corps. Other moves included signing cornerback Drayton Florence (Chargers) and backup quarterback Cleo Lemon (Dolphins).
Pundits are incredibly high on the Jaguars this season, especially after adding two solid defensive line prospects in Florida’s Derrick Harvey and Auburn’s Quentin Groves. Jacksonville should once again have a solid defense and with the emerging play of quarterback David Garrard, the offense should be once again improved.
Jacksonville is considered a favorite at all of the major bookmakers. Current prices on the Jaguars’ chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl range from 12/1 at Sportsbook.com and Bodog, and 20/1 at SBG Global.
Oddsmakers have also set the Jaguars’ over/under total for wins in 2008 at 10, but clearly think Jacksonville will lose more than 10 games considering the under pays out at –120 compared to -110 for the over.
The Jaguars appear to be a great value pick this season. Not only do they have one of the best front sevens in the entire NFL, they also have an incredible ground game led by Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor. Garrard played incredibly well last year as a full-time starter and the offensive line is high underrated. The Jaguars should challenge the Colts this year in the AFC South and once again make a deep postseason run if they can stay healthy.
